Today it is an important day and TROM wishes you happy....happy launch-day! Instead of people celebrating the "birth of Jesus", a crazy man walking around telling lies and jokes to those around him about the origin of ourselves, instead of people pretending to actually celebrate that and instead buy more and more shit, we should celebrate the launch of the new James Webb Space Telescope !

A telescope that is built to see the first stars that were formed after the big bang. How amazing can this be!?

So instead of this:

Humans should celebrate this:

The fact that most people, the vast majority, will celebrate christmas today and not this launch that happens the same exact day, says a lot about our primitive society. For those who are curious about our existence and reality, here's the link to follow link.trom.tf/avoDce69 - watch it live there! In only 1-2 hours it will launch.

And watch this video to know a little bit more about this telescope and why it is so important ytb.trom.tf/watch?v=F9v6ykzQqZ…

TROMjaro 2021.12.24

We are getting TROMjaro out of Beta. Not that it means much, but just so that people understand that it is stable enough. So this is the first non-beta release that comes with a few changes and explanations.

No more Classic and Modern

Our TROMjaro distribution had a particular layout since we started it in 2019. A left side panel with the apps and the apps-menu, and the top bar with the indicators. I think this makes a lot of sense since most, if not all screens have a “landscape” (rectangular) shape.

image
image1777×997 67.8 KB

So having the apps on the left side creates more workspace for your screen, than having it at the bottom. Anyway, since then we moved from Gnome to XFCE and I tried to replicate the same layout. In some regards it was better, in some maybe not. Compared to Gnome, we managed to implement global menus that are now integrated with the top bar, and the amazing HUD letting you search through the menus of apps.

The downside was that the nature of global menus makes them so that they do not work with all apps, but with (say) 70% of them. That means you’ll find the top global menus only for some 70% of all apps.

Like so:

image
image1770×997 70.8 KB

The 20-25% of the rest have a burger menu and you’ll always gonna find the menu there and not on the top bar.

Here:

image
image1779×1001 102 KB

And the tiny rest, have a normal menu but won’t export it to the top bar.

This situation may be confusing at times, but not as much as you may think. I use this configuration and I do not find it confusing. But it is an inconsistency and any distribution that ships with global menus will face this inconsistency.

Speaking of global menus, as we mentioned in a previous release, some apps (perhaps some 10% of all) have duplicated window buttons when maximized…it is just a minor visual inconvenience…but it is there.

image
image1775×998 161 KB

Now if you look at pretty much all distributions (Linux, Windows, MacOS) they are all inconsistent…Windows 11 ports old menus and “control panels” from the Vista days…MacOs can’t handle global menus properly either, and many popular Linux distros have themes that only apply to half of all apps, or they use flatpaks as default and they don’t respect the theme so you end up with wildly different looking apps, including the postilion of all window buttons and such. If you put the microscope on any operating system, you’ll find lots of such inconsistencies.

TROMjaro is a small distro made by a handful of people. So we can’t push ourselves too much. We fixed the themes situation and now you only have to change the theme from one place to apply to 95% or so of all apps…much better than Pop OS, Ubuntu, Elementary, Budgie and most Linux distros. We fixed the zombie apps icons, something even XFCE did not fix…and we did more to make it very consistent.

The Classic version would have removed the inconsistencies of the global menu and create a different TROMjaro layout. But I personally find the layout we use now as very efficient and sane. So recognizing the value in both, I decided to make 2 ISOs for TROMjaro. But to make this short, I am overwhelmed by the work so I have to choose one or the other. I choose to stick to the default TROMjaro look. It is what I love and what I test since it is my main layout. Anyone is free to fork TROMjaro and provide a different, more consistent, look. I am sorry but it is what it is.

For now I am ok with those few inconsistencies. All distros have them. And they are not that bad. If I will have the time I will improve this somehow or release 2 ISOs again.

The menu is back

The APPS menu should be a proper menu. We used Whisker at first, the default XFCE menu, then changed to Application Launcher, and now we are back to Whisker. Whisker is faster, and requires no hack to make it close and open via the same button/key. Now they introduced horizontal categories and so it makes it very customizable. Here it is:

/uploads/default/original/1X/265bbeab6e16a47a26049f812de4b04e49ac2aea.mp4

Looks great, works great! To add it, right click the Panel, then Panel Preferences. Remove the “app launcher” launcher from Items, and add Whisker menu instead of it. As for settings, do these:

/uploads/default/original/1X/585232ef044ec6e04999348e74ca10eeb72b4660.mp4

You can also remove the top bar right lock and shut down buttons. Since now they are located in the menu itself.

Custom menu searches are awesome

If you type in the same APPS Menu: “web” and then something say “web how many people are on earth?” and press enter, it will open our trade-free search engine and it will search for “how many people are on earth?”. We added a few such custom searches that can be very useful. See this demo:

/uploads/default/original/1X/20360dda2ce31fc6423b66ad5f434ea4fba5209d.mp4

Go to Whisker’s menu properties and in the tab “Search Actions” add new entries.

WebAPPS

It is now very easy to make a webapp out of any website via our webapp…app :slight_smile:

The package is called webapp-manager . Here is a demo of creating a webapp for videoneat.com so you can watch trad-free courses and documentaries. And save your favorites inside of the app:

TROMjaro Beta 2021.12.17

Another release, a quick one for that matter, to bring you the latest Manjaro Updates + some awesome fixes.

Making dealing with themes, awesome!

  • We are happy to let you know that the way we handle the themes in TROMjaro has been improved. And it is better than Pop OS, Ubuntu, Budgie, KDE Plasma, and for that matter most such distros. You only have to change the theme from Appearance and that’s it. Read more about why this is so awesome, here: Dealing with themes (change them, understand them).

Ok, so for the current TROMjaro users you have to do a few things to make your TROMjaro awesome when it comes to dealing with the themes.

  • Delete two packages that are not needed anymore: kvantum-qt5 and kvantum-theme-vimix-git .
  • Go to your home folder and edit the file .profile. Remove the line export QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE="kvantum-dark"
  • Go to your System Files and in the folder etc you’ll find a file called environment. Remove the following lines from it by editing it as ROOT - right click for that option:

<pre><code class="lang-auto">QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME="gnome"

QT_STYLE_OVERRIDE="kvantum"
</code></pre>

  • Reboot your computer.
  • Open the QT Settings. See the video bellow and make the changes similarly (pause the video if needed):

/uploads/default/original/1X/7ff4438bb0ffe044b91b086a4a25da3b62dd90b4.mp4

That’s all! Now installing and dealing with themes is a breeze! Read the above article I linked to!

SMPlayer improved a bit!

Our default “Play” player got some tweaks, such as hardware acceleration and such. This can make a huge difference. Again, see the bellow video and try to make your player have similar settings, especially for the Performance tab:

/uploads/default/original/1X/b5df689f115db573e53ec68eaf95660eaaa590af.mp4

Update the zombie-apps script:

Last time we pushed a release we did not update this script. It was a mistake…so we are fixing it now. This is a script that removes the zombie app icons - the icons of apps that were edited manually (renamed and such) and then uninstalled. Go to .local/bin and edit the file fix-tweaked-desktop-files - replace all of what is there with:
<pre><code class="lang-auto">#!/bin/bash
pidof -sq -o %PPID -x "$(basename "$0")" && exit
data="$HOME"/.local/share/applications/tweaked-desktop-files

# Directories where desktop files are stored
user="$HOME"/.local/share/applications
flatpak_local="$HOME"/.local/share/flatpak/exports/share/applications
flatpak_global=/var/lib/flatpak/exports/share/applications
pacman_local=/usr/local/share/applications
pacman_global=/usr/share/applications
snap=/var/lib/snapd/desktop/applications

detectfiles() {
for file in "$user"/*.desktop; do
name=$(basename "$file") || continue
[ -d "$file" ] || grep -xq "\(flatpak-local\|flatpak-global\|pacman-local\|pacman-global\|snap\)/$name" "$data" && continue
if [ -f "$flatpak_local/$name" ]; then
echo "flatpak-local/$name" >> "$data"
elif [ -f "$flatpak_global/$name" ]; then
echo "flatpak-global/$name" >> "$data"
elif [ -f "$pacman_local/$name" ]; then
echo "pacman-local/$name" >> "$data"
elif [ -f "$pacman_global/$name" ]; then
echo "pacman-global/$name" >> "$data"
elif [ -f "$snap/$name" ]; then
echo "snap/$name" >> "$data"
fi
done
}

fixfiles() {
lastmod=$(stat -c "%Y" "$data")
tmp="$(mktemp)"
trap 'rm $tmp' EXIT
[ -f "$data" ] && cp "$data" "$tmp" && copied='true'
lineno=0
[ "$copied" = 'true' ] && while IFS= read -r line; do
((lineno++))
name=${line#*/}

[ -f "$flatpak_local/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$flatpak_global/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$pacman_local/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$pacman_global/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$snap/$name" ] ||
mv "$file" "$file.bak"
done < "$data"

[ -f "$flatpak_global/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$pacman_local/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$pacman_global/$name" ] ||
[ -f "$snap/$name" ] &&

done
}

[ "$flatpak_local_new" != "$flatpak_local_old" ] ||
[ "$flatpak_global_new" != "$flatpak_global_old" ] ||

flatpak_local_old=$flatpak_local_new
flatpak_global_old=$flatpak_global_new
pacman_local_old=$pacman_local_new
pacman_global_old=$pacman_global_new
snap_old=$snap_new
sleep 5
done
</code></pre>
We also did a few minor changes such as muting the mic by default, unhide several tray icons that are important to be visible such as the VPN or the updates icon.

That’s all.

This month we plan to get TROMjaro our of Beta, since it is stable and awesome enough! :slight_smile:

TROMjaro Beta 2021.12.04 (two flavours)

With this release we are moving closer to getting TROMjaro XFCE out of Beta. And for that reason we are releasing two versions. Let me explain the “them” and the “why”.

TROMjaro Modern.

TROMjaro Modern is similar to our original TROMjaro Gnome. We wanted a left side apps panel, and a top bar for activities. With XFCE we managed to include global menus so the transformation was complete.

image
image1775×996 59.5 KB

Beautiful global menus, very nice and compact UI that allows windows to expand to the top panel.

/uploads/default/original/1X/d1793c6dda6ad59c0983d94a78e057ca4f7430c2.mp4

However this didn’t work 100% of the time. There were a few inconsistencies:

  • Several new apps are using CSD (Client Side Decorations) and that means they do not have a traditional top bar anymore, making it impossible to “expand” into the top bar. And so you end up with two sets of window buttons as such:

image
image1777×998 51.3 KB

This can be very confusing. We reported the issue here, but so far no sing that it will be fixed.

  • The top global menus only worked for some 70% of all apps from our tests. The same CSD windows are also bad at exporting the menus so they usually cannot have a global menu. And rarely some apps had a proper top menu but it was not being exported to the top panel. Overall I’d say some 70% of all apps worked with the global menu, some 25% kept their own hamburger menu and did not export any, and the rest had a traditional menu but it was not exported as a global menu. We think this may create confusion. This issue with apps not exporting the menus is debated for years now and it seems there is no fix to this since more and more developers choose to not properly export the menus of their apps. They seem to not care about this, despite the fact that it can be very useful, even for people with disabilities that can use all kinds of software to read through such menus. But well, it is something we cannot do anything about…
  • The fact that menus are on the top bar, even when windows are not maximized, can be confusing for some.
  • Maybe there are more reasons that I do not remember now.

Overall this Modern layout is as good as such a layout gets on Linux. I use it personally and I love it. It is geared for people who do video/photo editing and need more screen space.

TROMjaro Classic.

TROMjaro Classic is meant to fix the above inconsistencies so we are able to provide a TROMjaro ISO that is a lot more stable and consistent. Mind you, the changes are only design wise and a package less.

image
image1775×996 55.5 KB

Because there is one single panel, and it is located at the bottom like in most Operating Systems, it is more familiar to newcomers. We’ve also removed the global menus so apps look a lot more consistent, regardless if their are CSD or non-CSD.

image
image1774×1000 111 KB

We’ve also moved the window buttons to the right. They make sense to the left when used in the Modern version.

So why two?

Simply because one is based on our original intent to provide a more unique looking distro (Modern) with global menus, but if users want more consistency they can choose the Classic version. This way we keep an original approach and a more consistent one too, at the same time.

One can create any of those layouts very very easily. And we will add tips about how to do that, very soon, to our Tips category.

Changes:

Here are the changes that we’ve done for this release:

  • We obviously changed some stuff for the panels. Mainly we changed this little human menu from the right corner
    image
    with the Action Buttons plugin. So right click that little human (can be black now, hence the reason we are changing this) and then remove. The right click on the top panel and add a new item (Action Buttons). Drag it to the same position and make sure you have these selected:

    image
    image1090×885 110 KB

Now to improve the icons situation. Copy these icons to the .local/share/icons/Zafiro/actions/48/ folder. Now refresh the desktop if you can’t see the changes: Ctrl+Alt+Del.

  • We replaced the default lock screen app (light-locker) with XFCE’s default called xfce4-screensaver. Install it via Add/Remove Software and then open the Screensaver app and do these changes:

    image
    image589×640 41.8 KB

    image
    image593×643 55.5 KB

You may have to reboot your computer for this new Lock Screen to take effect.

  • We remove the terminal transparency simply because it was fully transparent on some systems after the OS was installed, But you can make it transparent manually via the terminal’s preferences.
  • We fixed a bug with the Archive Manager. Go to /.local/share/applications/ and remove a desktop file that has FileRoller in the name.
  • On desktop the mouse pointer will disappear when there is no movement. This can be confusing. We did this for touchscreen devices that are only used without a mouse. To remove this annoyance go to .config/autostart/ and remove the file Unclutter.desktop. Reboot your system.
  • We have removed the Whisker menu from our panels and replaced it with AppFinder. We wanted 1 single app finder/menu, not two. Simply right click the APPS button and remove. Then add a new item (a launcher) for AppFinder. As such:

    /uploads/default/original/1X/a9fb534818813feb4717583c7bbb1c73271c5c3a.mp4

It is easy. If you want to use a similar icon search for view-list-icons in the icons.

image

Oh and the wallpaper you see is probably going to be the default TROMjaro wallpaper. If you want it, grab it from here.

That’s all I guess! Grab the ISOs from here.

COVID Concerns

If you don't read this post on Friendica (why!?) then make sure you read it in full here. So you see the images, links, and all that.

This is a chart with COVID vaccines vs mortality due to COVID per million people. Left side is how much of the population is fully vaccinated. Right side the mortality rate.

(source)

It is quite clear that the more people are vaccinated, the less are dying of COVID. Now there is a new variant of concern - read the WHO statement about it news.un.org/en/story/2021/11/1…

Of course, it comes from Africa where the vaccination rate is very low. What are the tribes of the world thinking? This was very predictable. Delta came from India from the same reasons, and now Omicron is thought to be even more dangerous. If we have global problems but we only act locally, this is going to always happen.

When people doubt the institutions and companies, and in many cases for good reasons, then trust is eroded. The trade game that we play creates this situation, since companies and governments seek profits that are induced by the game of trade itself, so they cut corners, lie, are corrupted, and overall care more about profiting than they do about humans and the planet.

So the trust is eroded, and people are skeptical about the vaccines, and thus the vaccination rate will be lower even when there are vaccines available. This is why, even the new variant, is discovered mostly among unvaccinated people (source). Also the mortality rate that is seen in the world, due to COVID, is mostly among those who are not vaccinated. Therefore, even where the vaccine is available, people's mistrust in this society, couple with the bullshit of social (ad) platforms like facebook, twitter, youtube and the like that spread any nonsense that gets clicks, creates a disastrous situation.

SECOND.
Poor tribes do not get access to vaccines, so they become a breeding ground for new mutations of the virus. The vaccines should be open source and free for all. There are 0 excuses for this!

The moral of the story is that we are a global society that has global problems, from crime to climate change, from pandemics to starvation or waste and pollution. And yet humans act as if the imaginary borders they built, are going to protect them from such global threats.

Unless we wake up, and also give up to this primitive idea of trade that creates so many barriers, nothing will ever ever change.

Such a situation would be so different in a sane society:
- most people would have at least their basic needs met as trade-free, so they will have time to be more informed, relaxed, and cooperative in case of such an emergency
- more people could focus on solving the issue (doctors, researchers, citizen scientists)
- once a solution is found, will be distributed to those in most need, not in most rich tribes, thus preventing deaths and future mutations of such a virus

We act like retarded children. But this behavior comes from the environment that we are exposed to. Never forger that.

Fedilab is currently trying to rewrite some of their code to improve UI and stuff - toot.fedilab.app/@apps/1073283…

I'll just ping @apps here so maybe they would look into fixing these issues. Fedilab is actually the only app I could find on fdroid that explicitly said it supports friendica. But the friendica support on it is pretty bad right now, and there's definitely room for improvement.

Friendica is so underrated right now, and part of the reason is that it don't have a good mobile app

in reply to Rokosun

Yes, we have an issue where fixes will be brought to the new app.

The 200 Euros a year campaign to back all of our stuff to the cloud. Help here if you can tromsite.com/donations/trombkp…

The story:
We have around 7TB of this data. Some 40 websites – like tromsite.com, trom.tf with some 20 services (video hosting, social network, file sharing, etc.); tromjaro.com and the ISOs, all of our videos that we made, books, and so on. On top of this there is the next TROM II documentary we work on, that’s around 2TB in size (we filmed in 4k and have over 20h of recorded footage).

We have a ton of files and one shoe box where they are backed-up. Locally at the place I (Tio) live. On cheap Hard Drives.

But if the house burns down then we lose not only our backups, but most of our files. And we won’t be able to recover them, ever.

Our budget is very low, so we decided to make this campaign to pay for 1 year of cloud backup storage to make sure that all of our files are in a different location, not only locally.

If we get the funds, we will sleep very relaxed at night knowing that our files are in at least 2 different locations. Safe.

200 Euros to backup everything without extensive file versioning, and also no VideoNeat.com and its wonderful materials.

300 Euros to backup everything, plus extensive file versioning, plus VideoNeat.com and its wonderful materials.

I did try that via Syncthing. But now I do not have "another building" available. The only solution is to ask a friend to store some 8TB of data for me, which is a lot. We need very good speeds, I have to encrypt all data so whatever it reaches my friend's computer is encrypted so even he cannot access it. We need 20h uptime. It is too complicated and I did try.

Chewing the same gum

All of these official meetings to address climate change have no meaning, unless they look at what makes human beings consume that much and pollute so much. Unless they understand that it is the structure of our society (trade) that creates these bad behaviors, which in turn create such problems, nothing has any chance of getting better.

With all of these talks and chewing the same gum, no one looks at the human animal in a scientific way, and no one looks at our society from a scientific way. They are trapped in keeping the same religion of trade (economy) alive by any means.

Here's how you have some real chances to change these problems. Ready?

1. Understand the problem. Trade pushes people to chase...trades. And that's pretty much it. As simple and as dumb as that. Makes us all robotic merchants and consumers. So it is not the rich people's fault, not companies, not governments, not individuals. It is the environment. You can't simply punish anyone, you have to change this environment.

2. Now that you know what the problem is, tackle it. Trade is the problem, so lets move away from it. We have more stuff and food on this planet that it has become a problem we call waste. Lets start by giving trade-free access to all humans, for at least their basic needs as a first aid. This way you will decouple humans from this robotic state of trading, of being merchants and consumers. Humans will then have more free time to volunteer and create more trade-free goods and services.

This all has real chances to phase out the damaging practices that we see today, since no one will be incentivized to (for example) use coal over renewable energies, to lie about what they offer, to produce bad quality products and so forth. Because we won't try to save the "economy" in such a scenario, but to save us and the environment, and create a better life for ourselves.

In short, if you want to fix climate change alongside the billions of problems we see in the world today, a sane start is to move away from this trade-based society and one way you can do that is to first provide the needs of all humans as trade-free. Technology exist, stuff exist for the job. DO IT!

52 minutes done for TROM II:

Well there might be slight improvements but the bulk of it is done. Notice in the photo how massive the work is, and on the other side how well TROMjaro XFCE copes with it. Maximized window + global menus + HUD, makes it so much better and easier to edit videos.

Kdenlive had a few major bugs but using the Appimage seems to be fine, considering TROM II is such a massive project.

Maybe we will finish the first part in a month or so. That will be a total of some 1h 20 minutes. Then we have to work a lot more for the next parts that are even more important. It will take many months to finish the documentary, maybe more than a year who knows.

We have a new cool tool thanks to @Alexio ! status.trom.tf/

This page shows in almost real time the status of all of our websites. And it is hosted and managed by Alexio so that if our servers are down, this page won't be affected.

Big thanks to Alexio for this!

Such a page is important especially for trom.tf services, so that you can see what services are more reliable. And for us to keep track of what websites may not work properly, so that we can fix them. #tromimg

Romania and COVID, a case of mistrust perhaps.

Romania and COVID, a case of mistrust perhaps.

Romania has a small population, at some 20 or so million humans. Some 30% are fully vaccinated against COVID 19. Today they reported 574 deaths. 528 of them were unvaccinated. 46 vaccinated but 43 of them were already very sick with other diseases. (source)

At this moment Romania has the second mortality rate in the world. (source)

Romania was one of the first tribes to start the vaccination campaign, and has more than enough vaccines for all of its population. Also, the vaccines are free for everyone.

Romania is also one of the most corrupted tribes in Europe, despite being one of the most religious tribes in Europe.

All of this may tell us two important facts:

1. Religion clearly doesn't make you a better or a smarter human.
2. Despite having access to free solutions (like a free vaccine), and a lot of information (data) to showcase that vaccines are safe, the mistrust in companies and governments is going to trump over there.

We cannot simply create a better society by enforcing rules and laws, and force people to do this or that. We cannot rely on laws the same way we cannot rely on religion to make a population more trustworthy and honest. And we can't simply explain to people how safe vaccines are (for example) when we know very well that companies and governments lie all the time.

Romanians are not less educated than Spaniards. At least we cannot say that when it comes to how vaccines work and how safe they are. And yet in Spain the vaccination rate is at about 80% and deaths at about 20 per day, with a population 2-3 times the one of Romania. In other words we can clearly see that the death rate is in direct relation to vaccines administration. "Fake news" works the best with a population of people who mistrust official sources of information such as governments.

It is a sad truth, but comes from a fucked up society. It is easy to accuse these people and call them primitive and uneducated, but very likely their hesitancy comes from mistrust not miseducation. #tromimg

On 14th at 21:00 Madrid time we will have a very interesting live:

In this TROM-Cast we will discuss The Internet. What is the Internet and what does it do to our lives? Is it just merely a reflection of our trade-based society, but this time we trade more with our data and attention rather than our currencies?

We are thrilled to have Cory Doctorow. From his Wikipedia page: Cory is a "blogger, journalist, and science fiction author who served as co-editor of the blog Boing Boing. He is an activist in favour of liberalising copyright laws and a proponent of the Creative Commons organization, using some of their licences for his books. Some common themes of his work include digital rights management, file sharing, and post-scarcity economics."
