We are integrating a few things into the new TROMjaro release:

Our Trade-Free Library of apps. We are adding it as a webapp.

It is pinned to the apps-panel by default. Browse through some 650 trade-free apps. We have screenshots from TROMjaro, description, and an install button. Click it and install. As easy as that!

VideoNeat - fast access to hundreds and hundreds of quality documentaries and courses.

Click any magnet link and it opens by default with WebTorrent so you can stream everything directly from p2p. This one is also pinned to the apps-panel.

On top of this we are adding to the Documents folder a PDF about our Trade-Free initiative.

This is very important because TROMjaro is not just another distro, it is fueled by a "movement", an idea, that trade is the origin of most problems and we want to push it aside by providing trade-free goods and services. TROMjaro is one of these goods/services that we provide. If you are curious see the PDF here - files.trom.tf/s/pYnjyxGCKKPyaH…

Behavior is Environment

There is this massive myth on a global scale, almost like a huge conspiracy, that humans are predisposed to being like this or like that. Predisposed to becoming depressed, ADHD is an illness, sexual orientation is inborn, violence can be detected in one's brain, and so forth.

This notion that humans have a certain biology and their behavior is based on that.

False.

From sexuality to mental disorders, violence or anything else. There are no genes, no chemicals, nothing biological that can predict any such behaviors. None.

We should start to abolish this mentality. This approach is succulently pushed by companies who sell the "miracle" drugs, and everyone is hypnotized by the cattle-society practice: treat humans like they are on a conveyor belt. Feel angry, sad, and all that? Well probably you have a "disease". Take this pill! Bye!

Anyway. Here is a recent publication by Joanna Moncrieff that debunks the myth of the "chemical imbalance" of depression. And here a more general overview of how depression cannot be linked to any bio-chemical marker.

Some very important quotes from this group of proper scientists that have the dignity and courage to remain scientists:

I have shown that family, twin, adoption, and molecular genetic studies have failed to provide scientifically valid evidence that genes play a role in causing depression. Combined with the recent findings by Moncrieff and colleagues that serotonin is not associated with depression, the idea of MD as a medical condition is in serious trouble.

To understand the true causes of depression, we must focus on family (including abuse and trauma), social, and political environments, including racial, gender, class, and other types of oppression/discrimination. We must address people’s increasing social isolation and disconnection from each other, lack of meaning and purpose, consumerism, and fears of present or future calamities such as pandemics, climate change, and nuclear war. The idea of depression as a medical/genetic condition must be reevaluated, and non-medical prevention and intervention strategies should be promoted.

And

“suffering as being rooted in individual rather than social causes, leading individuals to think that it is them rather than the economic and social system in which they live that is at fault and in need of reform.

It is this trade-based society that makes humans sad, depressed, angry, demotivated and so forth. FIX SOCIETY!

Very well made video. Highly recommend. It is missing something tho.....to understand that the structure of this system, globally, is based on trade. As simple and as idiotic as that. The new religion: trade. This is where TROM brings something new to the table, and very important. #tromlive

We are in a much better financial situation than we've been in the past years, thanks to some big donations these past months and our ability to work (trade ourselves) to make some money. However, this is just to buy us time to focus on TROM and its so many projects. And things may change the next months, we may have to move to a new hosting provider that could be twice as expensive. We will have to pay the yearly backups for borgbase.com and megasync, and so forth.

Therefore any donation that we will get, will go towards such things and "buying" us more time for these projects.

Thank you to those who have always supported TROM via donations. We do not sell anything, or treat anyone differently. TROM is what it is. With its plenty-of-services available as trade-free for everyone.

We are removing bag.trom.tf (wallabag) from our services. We do not use it much at all, and recently no one could register - the registration confirmation email cannot be sent (see).

We do not have the time to fix or maintain this. It was one of the few services that we were unsure of from the get-go. It will still be around for months to come, but no new registrations are possible and we removed it from the front page. #tromlive

Removal of https://bird.trom.tf/BancoPacificoEC

Our first example of forced takedown has to do with our Nitter instance. Nitter is a front end for Twitter, a proxy service. All it does is requesting a page from Twittter on your (the visitor) behalf. It will only display the Twitter content, without trackers and using its own (more humane theme). It is not storing any data on the server.

Our instance: bird.trom.tf/

No page on bird.trom.tf/ exists unless you visit it to generate it. Remember this.

On 11/8/22, 17:35 we have received this from our hosting provider:

Dear ******,

We have received complaints about your VPS XL SSD, specifically about the following IP address(es):

*******

Please see the forwarded e-mail below for more details. Apparently, your VPS XL SSD is used for phishing which is strictly forbidden by our ToS.

Abuse is a serious threat in the Internet and can cause a huge amount of damage; thus, we ask for your understanding that once an ABUSE case is reported to us, we must handle abuse strictly and with no tolerance.

Please take immediate action to stop the ongoing server misuse. It is required that you solve the problem within the next 12 hours, and that we receive your reply within this period, too. Your reply must contain all information which enable us to understand exactly which measures you took to stop the abuse and prevent such or similar incidents in the future.

We will suspend access to your VPS XL SSD if we do not receive your reply within the given time frame, and if the problem is not solved in due time; both is essential - the solution and your response. The reactivation of a VPS XL SSD always demands a reactivation fee of at least €36.30. Please respond in due time to save these expenses.

We would appreciate your immediate attention to this matter.

Original complaint from tfp.report.ctac@appgate.com
Subject: Unauthorized Use of Trademark

The original complaint that was sent to our hosting provider was this:

Greetings,
This is an official message from AppGate, on behalf of our Banco del Pacifico G.F.
We need your cooperation in the removal of the content located in the site:
bird.trom.tf/BancoPacificoEC
The target site is the following URL(s):
twitter.com/BancoPacificoEC
We kindly ask you to shut down this content as soon as possible. We expect a prompt and affirmative response.

Thanks for helping make the Internet safer.

Sincerely,

DTP Team - Appgate

We replied:

Dear Contabo,

For one bird.trom.tf/BancoPacificoEC is a front-end access to the twitter page twitter.com/BancoPacificoEC. It is not a content that is available on our server. We are using Nitter a Twitter front-end github.com/zedeus/nitter . Like thousands do. How can we be responsible for the Twitter content now? This is not something we can ever remove since it is not on our server. Please understand.

Second, did you check to see if this bank account is phishing? bancodelpacifico.com/ - they have a verified Twitter account and all that. They seem like any other bank...

Please get back to me on this or put me in contact with the ones who filled the complain.

Cheers!

I thought for sure that they accuse us of mirroring a real Twitter phishing account.

But well, we were worried that they will shut down our entire server that hosts 20+ Open Source services that thousands of people use, so the same day we sent another email because no one would reply:

So this is a proxy service, mind you. If the ones contacting you are the owners of that Twitter account please make them aware that it is legal to host proxies and we do not host any materials from this proxy on our server. Here is a discussion about Nitter and DMCA github.com/zedeus/nitter/issue…

Sent one more because we were stressed by the 12 hour deadline they gave us:

Hello,

bird.trom.tf hosts Nitter, a private Twitter front-end, meaning it is simply a proxy to access Twitter assets and user generated content without tracking from Twitter. Thus, all content is proxied from Twitter and is not stored on our servers and if Twitter chooses to remove an asset, it will no longer appear on our site.

Our bird.trom.tf is hosted in the European Union, so the European Union's laws apply. Under the directive 2001/29/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 May 2001 on the harmonization of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society, "temporary acts of reproduction referred to in Article 2, which are transient or incidental [and] an integral and essential part of a technological process and whose sole purpose is to enable: a transmission in a network between third parties by an intermediary" is allowed, and legal.

As such, all takedown requests must be sent to Twitter, as we don't have any control on the data that they have on their servers.

Thank you,

After several hours of no reply we sent one more:

So please be mindful and do not remove our server. The link bird.trom.tf/BancoPacificoEC is not phishing. You gave me 12h to fix the problem and since you have not replied for the past hours I am concerned about that short deadline. I may not be available for the next 10 hours from now on, simply because I may be asleep, so please do not remove our server as it has not breached any of your ToS.

We got no reply until 22/8/22 10:46. 11 days later! We got this:

Dear ****,

So, where is the final solution? We will give 12 hours to finally close this case.

If you have any questions or need help, please do not hesitate to contact us.

And we replied:

Hello,

bird.trom.tf hosts Nitter, a private Twitter front-end, meaning it is simply a proxy to access Twitter assets and user generated content without tracking from Twitter. Thus, all content is proxied from Twitter and is not stored on our servers and if Twitter chooses to remove an asset, it will no longer appear on our site.

I am waiting for your response.

Cheers!

An hour later, no reply. We emailed again:

Please reply today so we can settle this. If you want you can even call me. My phone number is in my account details. I would be illegal under the EU law to remove my server because of a legal service. A proxy one that does not store any data on your servers.

I am waiting for your reply!

2 hours later, no reply, we emailed them again:

I could also seek the advice and involvement of the Electronic Frontier Foundation about this case, because if you decide to remove our server for something that is legally protected, then the precedent is dangerous and needs to be addressed.

I have contacted you a few hours ago and you did not reply, yet you gave me 12h to solve this issue and/or to contact you, which I have done.

So please reply to me and please do not remove the server.

Two more hours later, no reply. Being concerned that they will remove our entire server we decided to make that Nitter link not accessible via Nginx. That's the best we could do. We were forced to do that because no one at Contabo would even engage with us over this. We had no options. It was a mafia style "non-discussion", "do as I told you" approach by the Contabo company.

We emailed:

The URL bird.trom.tf/BancoPacificoEC is now gone. This is an illegal request and I felt bullied into removing a link that did not host anything phishing related and no content at all. This is not ok and I will contact several organizations to help me with this abuse.

You should understand that what the complaint requested was an illegal request, but since I was threatened with the closure of my entire server in less than 12h, and thus over 20 websites hosted there, I was forced to remove that URL.

Now that the URL is gone, you can close this case. I will contact you soon in regards to this decission.

And emailed again:

Tomorrow I will not be home for most of the day, and now that the link has be removed (unfairly) you have no reason to delete our server. I hope you are reasonable people and act the same. And not forget that I've been forced to remove a link that was neither phishing, nor did it store any content. It was a proxy link from a very popular proxy service called Nitter.

They replied:

Dear ****,

Thank you very much for your response.

The complaint seems to be solved; thus, we have closed this case and no further steps are requested from your side at the moment. If we should receive further complaints about your used services, we will contact you again.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Fuck them! "thank you for your cooperation"....motherfuckers. There was no cooperation. It was them forcing me to remove a URL that was not a phishing URL as it was claimed to be, nor did it store any content.

I replied:

Dear Contabo,

This was far from "cooperation", I was forced by you to remove a link that was not phishing, nor did it contain any content. You refused to reply to any of my arguments or look into this.

I am terribly disappointed in you, and I will stop recommending Contabo to anyone.

I will do my best to forward this case to different organizations that could help me pierce through your silence, because you have been bullied by whatever company contacted you, to remove a legal link, and thus abuse people like me who are paying for your service.

Do you have any comments in regards to your decision to force me to remove that URL?

And now I will try to contact EFF or other similar organizations about this issue. If anyone can help, please let me know. If this becomes the norm, then any link from any of our website, can be subject to removal.

This is unacceptable.

UPDATE.

25.08.22

The company:

Thank you for your response.

There are new changes in Germany regarding copyright violations that forced us to remove all domains from our network that are providing protected contents.

Either you provide for us and every visitor the declaration of consent of the right holder to each individual product or its confirmation that you are the right holder. Otherwise, we will be forced to remove this website. This comes also in action for redirections, quotes and shared posts.

We know that this is strict, but we are bound by the law and hope for your understanding.

Us:

Would would be kind to tell me what set of laws we are talking about? This is extremely strict. Sounds like you are not allowed to host anything but your own personal photos for example.

Second, are these laws only applying for the servers hosted in Germany by Contabo? Would it be better to migrate to a different region?

Them:

Thank you for your e-mail.

Yes, the German copyright law is really very strict, and affects all companies based in Germany, including in our case our data centers in other countries.

The copyright law states that content may only be uploaded if its creator or owner has explicitly confirmed this.

Us:

Hi,

I felt like I was given no chance to defend myself when you contacted me. And I contacted others for legal advice and I was given some, but you had ignored it. You did not address it at all. I showed you that proxy services are legal in all of the EU "Under the directive 2001/29/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 May 2001". So how am I going to know if what you did was legal or not if I am not provided any details about your decision?

Do you understand my frustration?

Right now, based on my experience with Contabo, you guys can any day ask me to remove any link at your will, and I cannot do a thing about it. This is truly disturbing to me.

Now can you please take your time and explain to me under what exact law does it say it is illegal in Germany to host a proxy service that uses the official API of Twitter, which allows exactly for what we are doing with bird.trom.tf (Nitter).

Please take your time and explain to me. I think it is fair towards me to have an explanation of this.

Thanks

Them:

we don't have to have a legal debate, because I don't think there's a lawyer sitting on either side right now. It is also completely irrelevant: We don't want our network to be affected, by repeated complaints. We are allowed to protect our reputation, and that is what we are doing here. Besides, it's perfectly clear that you can't use someone else's copyright.

It is clear by now that they just bend to whoever contacts them with an abuse report. They do not want or have the resources to do anything more than bully their "clients" into taking down whatever it is requested. Not surprised...

How is TROMjaro different from Manjaro?

Here are several changes that are unique to TROMjaro:

- We have built a Layout Switcher for XFCE, that allows anyone to quickly switch between 6 different layouts.

- We have built our own Theme Switcher for XFCE: 10 accent colors, light/dark variants. Unlike any theme switcher that we are aware of, this one is able to apply our TROMjaro themes to pretty much all of the Linux apps out there (QT, GTK, GTK + LIbadwaita, Flatpaks). And work properly with them.

- We ship with a lot of hand-picked Wallpapers that are more or less unique to our distro.
- We co-create the default TROMjaro icon pack, and therefore we make hundreds of custom icons for TROMjaro.

- We have enabled Global Menus and HUD

- We added a lot more options for the Settings Manager, such as the ability to configure touchpad/mouse gestures, RGB lights, system and files backup, webcam, added a system cleaner and a lot more. Therefore a more complete set of Settings.

- We added gestures for mouse, touchpad and touchscreen.

- We test TROMjaro on touchscreen devices too, and optimize for that. For example we ship with a customized Virtual Keyboard.

- We enabled Flatpaks and AUR, plus we have our own small repository. Thus, users have full access to pretty much all apps that are available in Linux, from the get-go.

- We added support for Appimages.

- TROMjaro creates a system backup automatically every time there are important updates.

- We made sure that pretty much all common files (video, audio, documents, images) are opened with properly tested apps from the get-go. Meaning, you do nor have to worry about your files. Double click them and they simply work. We also added support for .torrents files.

- We ship with a heavily tweaked Firefox. We have removed most annoyances and trackers from Firefox, plus added a handful of addons and set them up, so that users will be protected from the online trades (ads and trackers are removed, alongside promotional content from youtube videos). Users can also save webpages or media files from Firefox directly.

- We’ve added a few unique and useful apps to TROMjaro, like a trade-free VPN, a simple file sharing app, messenger, and so forth.

- Lastly, we have our own web app library – we test thousands of apps and add only the trade-free ones to our library. TROMjaro users can directly install any of them from the website itself.

We have removed out Bilbiogram instance from our TROM.tf suite of services. It is being discontinued teddit.net/r/privacy/comments/… plus it never really worked. Instagram is a devil-child of Facebook/Meta, and Facebook trades human minds (content, attention, time, etc.). Thus, Instagram is not happy to let such frontends like bibliogram run. It runs against their trading business. A battle Instagram will always win.

"The Atlantykron Project is a living experiment of education in nature. The academy brings together world leading experts, the latest learning tools and technologies, and youth from many countries. This combination of teaching, learning and living in a natural and wild environment creates an educational and life experience like no other. "

Unfortunately the presentation is only in the Romanian language. We have added subtitles in different languages but they are auto-translated so they are likely not that great. In any case, the important thing is that Alexio did the presentation. We need more Alexio's!

The risks are like with any other online password manager: our server can be compromised or not working properly and such, and you may lose all of your passwords. That's the reason we are skeptical about providing such a service. But since it has many advantages like the ease of use across devices, we are thinking of providing such a service.

As far as we understand BancoPacificoEC contacted them to complain that they noticed their "twitter" page accessed via our Nitter instance. But Nitter (bird.trom.tf) does not host any files, it is a proxy (twitter front-end). We have explained it all to the hosting provider. Hopefully they are smart enough to understand this. One of my arguments is that one of Elon Musk’s contributions to transportation over the past decade or so is really to try to stifle alternatives, things that would try to get people out of cars. Because he is this automaker, he has this desire for people to take cars instead of taking transit.

Is anyone surprised that Musk's incentive is to sell more cars? The same situation, over and over again, for centuries now. "business" humans trying to trade their shit, one way or another, by all means.

The ruining of "free" and "donation".

Here's another example of how people are entirely confused about what is free and what is not, and why our trade-free approach makes so much sense.

We have added this peer to peer file sharing app to TROMjaro's Library: SoulSeek. This app is great. It allows you to connect with others directly, and share files with them. No server involved. We wanted to share our VideoNeat library on the network. However if you look closely they limit your experience. And if you donate currency to them you get this:

While they call themselves entirely free:

So, it is free, but you have to pay to unlock certain features....makes so much sense indeed!

Actually they call those trades, donations. And the word and concept of "donation" got ruined alongside that of "free". Donations should be voluntary and not used for the purpose of trade. If you "donate" currency to me in return for some features, then that is a trade. You are buying from me. As simple as that.

Therefore our concept of trade free is so simple and destroys all of these nonsensicalities: What Am I Trading? Ask that. And if you do, then you realize that you need to trade currency for Soulseek to give you more features. Therefore this app is not trade-free.

The reason it was added to our TROMjaro library is that either we could not detect this trade since they are charlatan enough to hide them well, or it was not present when the app was added. Needless to say it was immediately removed.

We need more than ever this "trade as the original of most problems" approach and the "trade-free" antidote. Without them we are going into a deep and ugly confusion. A black hole of that! #tromlive

Libadwaita still sucks and they have no reason to implement it

Reading this article about libadwaita and how pity the arguments are in favor of using it. I was expecting more.

Basically they argue that they use libadwaita since custom themes were not always perfect and people were reporting issues with apps because of that, and the devs were annoyed because these were issues with the themes and not the app itself. That’s the main idea. Such a weak argument. Let me explain.

1. Linux is variety and it will continue to be. Get used to it, Gnome!

We are talking about Linux here. Multiple kernels, multiple distros, multiple desktop environments. This is a world of variety so of course there will be some sort of inconsistency in some regards. If I use theme A and 1 out of 10 apps doesn’t look that good, then I think that’s acceptable considering this huge variety in the Linux world. So Gnome seems to not understand that this is the nature of Linux. And they won’t change it. What now, make the Gnome apps not run on XFCE, Mate, Arch, kernel 5.4 just because they are not the official Gnome + whatever kernel they use, and they may not be 100% looking and behaving like on the original gnomiverse?!

Friends, the gnome extensions also break the gnome desktop here and there, from theme to functionality. I’ve used it. We all know that. You wanna bet their next move is to not officially support any extensions?

Soon Gnome won’t support anything but Gnome. Just so that 100% of their few apps look as they want them to look. Good luck with that!

2. They create more complaints than before.

It is ridiculous to argue that users were seeing apps that look broken and they reported that to the devs, while not realizing that now they create an even bigger issue: gnome is a small part of the linux world, and if gnome enforces certain themes for their gnome apps, then users will see that these apps do not respect the system’s themes and…guess what…report that to the devs! You ain’t solving anything, you create more problems.

3. The problem is not as huge as they make it look like.

With some tweaks you can make the GTK and QT apps sync in terms of theming, plus force flatpaks to respect the system’s theme too, at least for some of them. In this way most apps look as they should. I have tested thousands of apps so far for our TROMjaro Linux, and we have implemented a robust theming system, granted hacky when it comes to, you guessed it, libadwaita.

image

There, some 700 apps are published (I test more than I publish). I’d say 98% look great. With a custom theme. You can find screenshots for all apps posted there, from TROMjaro.

As an example, they showcase how PoP OS and Ubuntu fail with the theming. They say look at Ubuntu how badly it deals with the default Gnome Fonts app:

image
image1920×1080 246 KB

Bad contrast, black font preview with a dark theme. Guess how the same app looks on TROMjaro?

image
image1832×990 75.1 KB

See? Theming done right. On Ubuntu is not that bad either, but how come TROMjaro, a 1.5 men team, does it better than Ubuntu!? Because we care about theming! It is not that difficult.

Here it is with a light theme in TROMjaro:

image
image1839×969 76.2 KB

Looks Perfect!

Another example they show us: look at the Characters Gnome app in PoP OS, again poor contrast and they said misplaced characters - I suppose they are referring to the dividing lines and how characters overlap:

image
image852×660 42.1 KB

I agree. Poor contrast. Not in TROMjaro:

image
image1594×998 70.5 KB

You could say characters misplaced too…but then I installed the “pure” Gnome Characters with Libadwaira and guess what? Yeah…characters misplaced:

image
image1491×994 67 KB

Speaking of that, if I see this app in libadwaita form on my System, not respecting the theme (buttons, top bar, dark mode, font) then I will send a message to the devs. Just saying!

Lastly they show us the app Contrast in PoP OS, and they say " White background in Contrast":

image

What do they want to say, that the color pick boxes are white on a Dark theme? If so, not in TROMjaro:

image
image1630×751 64.8 KB

They exaggerate the issue by showcasing some PoPular OSes that do a bad job at implementing a proper theme. But I bet they do a bad job ALSO because Gnome or others, are very unfriendly at letting others theme their apps. So you have to kinda find hacky solutions like we did. The irony…if they made it easier for developers to theme their apps, then there will be less inconsistencies…

4. Gnome could still fix this nonsense.

So they show us OBS as an example of how some QT apps are also an issue when it comes to custom theming. And this gives birth to two main issues with Gnome. First, they say look at OBS it looks like so on any system regardless of the theme:

image
image2050×1166 99.8 KB

image
image1111×885 82.2 KB

And I agree. It looks like that. That’s because OBS enforces their own theme, but in settings one can choose the system theme. And they say if you do that in KDE it still doesn’t look that good:

image
image2050×1166 106 KB

image
image1111×885 81.3 KB

Poor contrast: dark button icons on a dark theme. And TROMjaro suffers from this too:

image
image1460×903 53.6 KB

image
image1550×921 96.9 KB

But let’s be honest, it is not that fuckin’ bad. I’ll put up with this for a very very few apps, and have a consistent desktop experience overall, rather than having 100 apps with 100 different themes. Any-day! On top of this I’d report this to the theme dev and icon dev, so they can fix these. Am sure they can. If not, it is ok. Relax Gnome!

But the core point here is that some apps respect the users and give them this option. If I dislike this “baaad” contrast in OBS I will select one of their built-in themes. They allow it. So why not is Gnome doing the same? Be friendly with the theme developers and make libadwaita easily themable, and also add an option to let users select a system’s theme. This way you can have your favorite libadwaita theme for any Gnome apps, plus a “broken” (as you think) system theme that the users can choose. See? Solution!

Second point about their QT example: is the Gnome team realizing the irony here? You show me a QT app that looks a little bit bad, a little bit, when themed in KDE with the system’s theme. But if OBS was GTK + Libadwaita it would not respect the theme at all! And no way to even let you select the system’s theme. Which one is better? Are these people blind, or am I going crazy?

Final thoughts:

Gnome sees itself as an isolated thing. Like a cult almost. As if you use Gnome only with the Gnome apps, preferably with Debian and only install the Gnome Apps from flatpak. This way you get the “pure” Gnome experience. But people on Arch + XFCE also wanna use the Gnome Apps, They have no freakin’ Gnome control center to change the theme to dark/light mode or select a highlight color. Gnome does not think about anyone but the devoted gnome users it seems.

They removed the top bar from the GTK apps, disabling a plethora of features for many systems, such as minimizing to the top bar a window, better integration with whatever desktop you are using, right click options in some cases, top panel integration, and more. Now the top bar in gnome apps looks huge and has no functionality other than saving a tiny bit of vertical space, as if that was important. They also killed the global menus…and now they wanna kill the theming.

But the thing is that they kill themselves. They might be cocky as to how big Gnome is, but Linux is far bigger. TROMjaro still have a proper theming, even for the libadwaita apps via a hack, and still has a top pannel integration with the windows, and global menus. There are only a few apps, the Gnome ones, that ruin a bit the user experience: no global menus for them and no proper integration with the top bar.

Gnome does not care about the users if they remove features that are useful and necessary. They fantasize to become the Mac of Linux. And they may achieve their dream. And we should not care. Linux is much bigger.

Think about this:

If you use Debian + Pure Gnome + apps from their official repos, then at best your experience is limited. Gnome has a few apps compared to the vast universe of the Linux apps. And any other app that you install on this config, and is not a GTK LIbadwaita app, will look different on your desktop. No light/dark mode will work via the Gnome Control center…no highlight color…the window buttons will be different, the font may be different, the icon set for these other apps may be different. IN-CON-SIS-TEN-CY. So Gnome is a failure if they wanna be so purists. It only makes it a bit more annoying for some Linux users, and is breaking things on the desktop.

Our TROMnews Illustrations is back tromnews.com/illustrations/ !! We gave up trying to pull an RSS from instagram accounts, and we do so from Twitter now. Luckily these accounts have twitter. This section is perhaps the most TROM relevant of all of the TROMnews section, as it represents important ideas and criticisms of this society, via illustrations. Very very powerful.

If you know more such artists let us know so we can add them to the mix!

What if we treated everyone like they were babies?

Here's a post Kostas, an old friend of TROM, sent to us for reshare:

What if we treated everyone like they were babies?

When someone suggests that the goal of our society should be to offer everything to everyone for free, no matter if they work or if they offer something to society, no matter if they are "good" persons or not, usually the reaction by other people is strongly against this opinion and that's probably "normal".

Because, you see, in our lives we are used to something a bit different: a few things are earned without effort. So, it's probably "normal" to view such ideas at first as "extreme" and reject them as something "utopian", "unachievable" or "very distant from our times".

Nevertheless, how many of you have thought about the following?

There's truly a certain period in the lives of all of us (at least in what we call the "Western world"), which is very similar to such an "utopia".

When we are fetuses in the womb of our mother, we get our food literally without doing anything. Just because we exist. Noone has anything to expect from us and we have no responsibilities whatsoever. And when we are born, all people around us care for us, so that we live as comfortably as possible.

Usually, the first years of our lives are the best, happiest and the most carefree. We haven't been, yet, inside the awful trade game, so everyone is trying to make our lives as pleasant as possible, without the need to offer something in order to earn this privilege. Food, clothing, education, entertainment are all offered abundantly by our caregivers.

I already hear some voices complaining: "Yes, but babies and children are unable to offer anything, that's why we offer them all they need! They can't go to work!"

Yes, that's correct! If babies could work we would send them to make some profits for the privileged, super-rich people... And maybe they could keep something for themselves: A small glass of milk per day perhaps?? 😀

The truth is that we care for them because, indeed, they can't help themselves yet. And of course, it's the right thing to do.

In contrast, of course, to what happens later in our lives, where, even to be able to eat, we are forced to work, or have income from somewhere. With adulthood, we suddenly lose the privilege of being cared for and we need to "earn our living", so that we fulfill our assigned role as a well-tuned cog in the trade system.

But why would it be "bad"? What would we have to lose if we continued to care for all the people of the Earth, of all ages, as if they were incapable of providing something in return? Like they were babies for all their lives?

Honestly, I cannot think of a convincing answer. Every argument against it, sounds in my ears like the old, outdated opinion some "kid-experts" expressed in the past: "Don't give too many hugs to the child because you will spoil it!"

A real civilized society should generously offer everything to all its people, without asking for anything in return. With our material needs covered, we would contribute to society out of selfless love for our fellow man and out of optimism for the evolution of our species, but also of ourselves.

We know that it can happen if we really want to make it true. Humankind is capable of miracles if we work all together and we've proven that in the past.

Our tromnews.com/illustrations/ does not work because, well, Instagram...you see most people use Instagram and that's where we can find these "artists" making interesting illustrations. Now to pull that content from Instagram you have to "hack" it. And so we use Bibliogram, which is a front-end for Instagram that also allows you to see people's profiles without having to have an Instagram account (the sane way). Plus, it provides an RSS feed for accounts.

Anyway, Instagram is blocking such front-ends so these days it seems all Bibliogram instances are not working, or not working properly.

So you know...

People should use Pixelfed instead. Federated, trade-free. However most of them won't, for two main reasons that are entangled with each-other:

1. Fame
2. Money

In other words, in this trade based society one can and will convert views and followers into products, currency, access. Trade those. And so human immediately associate quantity (of likes, shares, followers, comments, etc) with "value", simply because the more of those, the better and more trades you can do with them. And so the concept of fame is reinforced and maximized.

Even those who may not use their "reach" to trade for something, they (because of the trade value of those) still see the quantity as "value". And so, even the ones bashing facebook, youtube, instagram and the like, do so on those platforms. The irony cannot be greater.

At least TROM walks that talk, and we have gave up on those ad-platforms. Now we use our own that connect with tens of millions of humans from all around the world. Pixelfed, Friendica, Mastodon, Peertube, and so many other platforms, are amazing alternatives to those ad-platforms like youtube, facebook, twitter, instagram and the like.

Anyway, it happened before that insta-ad has blocked Bibliogram, but then Bibliogram hacked it again. So our Illustrations stream may work again these days. We shall see....

TROM

That was meant for media that would be trade-free an anyone can use. However for one we didn't find a good software to host that...and second it takes a lot of time and resources to do such a website...maybe in the future we will...for now we can't.

TROM

It is still a project that we think about and we have not filly abandoned...but too many things under the TROM umbrella. It is quite a challenge to maintain everything at this point. Maybe after the TROM II documentary is released we can look again into this. I'd love to see such a website.
