“In terms of the vaccine mandates, I acknowledge that it was a challenging time for people but they ultimately made their own choices. There was no compulsory vaccination. People made their own choices.”
This statement is sparking an amount of #outrage, mostly among those who feel they were forced to get #vaccinated, and while the outrage is understandable, the man is telling no more than the literal #truth. Virtually no one was actually compelled to get vaccinated, as we were all presented with choices. To be threatened with the loss of one’s job, the inability to play a sport, to drink in a club, or to eat in a restaurant, the cancellation of one’s college acceptance or one’s travel plans, may be unpleasant, but it is still to be presented with a choice.
Many people, most people, made bad choices. They made what in retrospect look like very suboptimal and dangerous choices that prioritized their short-term preferences over their long-term health.
So remember this next time! Remember this when the new “mandates” are put in place. The choice is still going to be yours. Learn from the mistakes that were made last time, and remember, those who are putting you in this difficult position are going to point out after the fact that you were the one who made your choice.

END OF THE LINE FOR TRUTH SOCIAL? MERGER WOES THREATEN TRUMP'S MEDIA
Truth Social might be in a bit of trouble. And when I say a bit of trouble, I mean the platform could be shutting down altogether if the stars do not align. The company, established in October 2021, is reportedly on the brink of collapse due to its troubles merging with Digital World Acquisition Corp.
The platform was meant to become a tech behemoth worth up to $1.7 billion. But with the deal in jeopardy, this might not come to fruition:
When former president Donald Trump’s media start-up announced in October 2021 that it planned to merge with a Miami-based company called Digital World Acquisition, the deal was an instant stock-market hit.
With the $300 million Digital World had already raised from investors, Trump Media & Technology Group, creator of the pro-Trump social network Truth Social, pledged then that the merger would create a tech titan worth $875 million at the start and, depending on the stock’s performance, up to $1.7 billion later.
All they needed was for the merger to close — a process that Digital World, in a July 2021 preliminary prospectus, estimated would happen within 12 to 18 months.
“Everyone asks me why doesn’t someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!” Trump said in a Trump Media statement that month.
Now, almost two years later, the deal faces what could be a catastrophic threat. With the merger stalled for months, Digital World is fast approaching a Sept. 8 deadline for the merger to close and has scheduled a shareholder meeting for Tuesday in hopes of getting enough votes to extend the deadline another year.
If the vote fails, Digital World will be required by law to liquidate and return $300 million to its shareholders, leaving Trump’s company with nothing from the transaction.
The deal has been fraught with challenges having been postponed six times. The issues include scrutiny from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), allegations that Digital World engaged in early conversations in violation of rules governing special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), and a slew of
internal problems, such as the termination of the chief executive and insider trading allegations against a former board member.
If the vote for another extension fails, Digital World will be compelled to liquidate and return $300 million to shareholders. This would leave Trump’s company with empty pockets.
SPACs, also known as “blank check companies,” are investment vehicles that allow investors to invest in private equity-type transactions.
Investors set up these entities with the purpose of pursuing deals in certain industries. The only purpose of this type of business is to raise capital through initial public offerings (IPO) to acquire existing businesses.
Digital World’s funding consists largely of small-time retail investors, which makes it difficult to get sufficient participation in critical votes. Trump Media blames the SEC for the myriad of delays, accusing it of political sabotage.

There is also the reality that Truth Social has not lived up to its ambitious goals. In July, it had about 500,000 monthly active users in the U.S. This fell far short of projections that it would reach 41 million users by the end of 2023. Indeed, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson decided to air his interview with the former
president on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, instead of Truth Social.
The future of Truth Social remains uncertain. But if it does go under, there could be a silver lining – it could prompt the former president to return to X. If he comes back to the platform, we can already imagine the hilarity and triggering that will result, right?
We already saw what happened when Trump posted his mugshot on the platform. Using X might allow him to once again dominate the headlines as it would get engagement from a wider swath of users – including those on the left.
Another disadvantage of Truth Social is that it attracted primarily those on the right. This created an echo chamber similar to other “free speech platforms” that tried to position themselves as alternatives to mainstream social media sites.
The hurdles Truth Social faces are not to be taken lightly. The clock is ticking and the companies involved have limited time to make a deal. If things fall through, then Truth Social might be no more. But, if Trump comes back to X, it might actually benefit his campaign for the presidency more.

As children, we were told that participating matters more than winning or losing. However, as an adult, one learns that there are no trophies for participating and often no silver medal for finishing second.
The recent GOP primary debate had participants who were has-beens, pretenders, or hopefuls.
President Trump leads his immediate rival Ron DeSantis by about 40 points, according to the RealClearPolitics average.
Trump rightly understood that he would have diminished himself had he stood on the crowded stage and exchanged jabs with those who either worked under him or were there due to his endorsement.
There was also the risk of an unfavorable occurrence on that stage would become silly anti-Trump meme material.
Trump saw no gains in participating in the contest.
Instead, Trump collaborated with Tucker Carlson released an interview at the time of the debate.
Both Tucker and Trump have been wronged by Fox News.
Tucker was unceremoniously sacked by Fox News. Fox News prematurely called Arizona in favor of Biden in 2020, and its coverage is seen as favorable to DeSantis.
By the end of the night, both Tucker and Trump had their revenge.
Trump's arrest in Georgia stole the remaining limelight from the debate.
Now for Governor Ron DeSantis, who desperately needed a triumph at the debate.
DeSantis needed to replicate Trump's performance during the 2015 GOP primary debates, where Trump eviscerated the then-frontrunner, Jeb Bush, and others to become the sole focus.
But DeSantis has neither the showmanship nor the wit to knock out other contenders.
Trump was blamed for the GOP's underwhelming performance during the 2022 midterms even by some sections of conservative media. They even projected Trump as the past, while DeSantis was called the future of the GOP.
But anyone who has been paying even casual attention knows that this is untrue.
Trump and his supporters know that the 2020 presidential election was an unfair contest.
There was coordinated suppression of the Hunter Biden story by the media, Big Tech, and intelligence services. The Zuckerbucks scandal resulted in Democrat "activists" infiltrating sacrosanct election infrastructure and promoting mail-in ballots. In the end, 69% of voters nationwide cast their ballot nontraditionally — i.e., by mail and/or before Election Day.
Trump did well during his tenure as president, ensuring prosperity in the U.S. and peace across the world. All of this despite the establishment's attempt to unseat and destroy him. This sinister campaign is likely to continue.
Hence, Trump-supporters feel he deserves another chance, and this time, he will be much more effective because of the lessons he learned during his first term.
The relentless witch hunts by the establishment also played a huge part in cementing the bond between Trump and his supporters.
DeSantis should have grasped this and played it smartly.
He should have announced in early 2022 that he does not intend to run but instead remain focused on Florida.
This would have created a mystery around him and allowed pundits to build "what-if" scenarios. Experts would have opined that DeSantis would have done very well had he run.
DeSantis could have reacted by smiling and reiterating that he had no presidential ambitions.
Irrespective of what he really thought, DeSantis should have spoken favorably about Trump and appeared at rallies with him. Perhaps Trump would have made him his running mate, which would have been a big boost.
DeSantis should never have breathed a syllable about his presidential ambitions to a soul.
By doing so, he would have retained the goodwill of Trump-supporters. They probably would have seen him as the only viable alternative to Trump if Trump was prevented from running.
Instead, DeSantis campaigned without officially declaring, a move that is amusing for a few days but annoying when it lasts for months. When he did launch, whatever interest existed had already diminished.
At times, an effective campaign speech at a launch can arouse interest, but that didn't happen.
In an era of audio and visuals, DeSantis opted for an audio-only Twitter spaces platform. The unstable platform crashed, and the speech was never heard. The "launch" became a subject of ridicule.
This wasn't a launch for DeSantis, but instead a crash on the runway during take-off.
DeSantis didn't get a second chance to make a first impression. His trailing in the polls has brought him the blemish of being a loser, which never helps a candidate.
His body language and hesitation during the debate and his appearance make it obvious that he is under pressure.
His usage of the term "listless vessels" to describe some MAGA-supporters appeared desperate and petty. This was the kind of attitude that contributed to the destruction of Hillary Clinton.
Does DeSantis not comprehend the fundamental principle that you cannot win over people by insulting them?
We know that President Trump is a fierce adversary with a gift for wit. But Trump has never ever mocked voters, even those who do not vote for him. Trump always strikes at those who have the means to fight back — they are counterattacks and not unprovoked attacks.
Even if DeSantis attempts to be confrontational and target Trump, it won’t work.
Currently, the U.S. political establishment is using all its might to baselessly target President Trump. At such a stage, any harsh attacks on Trump will be perceived as siding with the enemy.
What's worse for DeSantis is that Trump continues to dominate the news cycle media.
DeSantis is hence running in a contest where he cannot frontally target his chief opponent. Worse, he cannot even steal a smidgen of attention from his chief opponent.
Forget about the juggernaut of Trump; DeSantis could not even steal the limelight at the debate from candidates he has bested in the polls.
DeSantis could have skipped this contest, much like how Trump skipped the debate, since it is fraught with serious peril and victory is unlikely.
Floridians are unlikely to be pleased by their absentee governor. In time, his approval ratings in Florida are likely to plummet. This means the foundation that made him a viable candidate is beginning to weaken.
This could be the beginning of the end of a promising political career.

I think it’s safe to expect Chinese corporations to be seizing foreign-owned property in #HongKong and #Taiwan soon, and taking steps to abandon the international arbitration system given these remarks on a new law that strips #foreign #state #immunity by the Foreign Ministry.
Q:The Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress reviewed and passed the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Foreign State Immunity at a recent session. The law adjusted China’s previous stance of absolute state immunity and authorized courts in China to hear lawsuits against foreign states. What’s the reason for such an adjustment?
A: Enacting the Law on Foreign State Immunity is a normal legislative activity conducted by the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress. The law stipulates provisions related to foreign state immunity in line with international practices and aims to improve China’s foreign state immunity system. The law stipulates the rules for Chinese courts to handle civil cases involving a foreign State and its property, with a view to protecting the lawful rights and interests of the parties concerned, safeguarding the sovereign equality of States, and promoting friendly exchanges with other countries, which all in turn boost China’s higher-level opening-up.
The Law on Foreign State Immunity affirms the fundamental principle that a foreign State and its property enjoy immunity in China, at the same time stipulates exceptions relating to non-sovereign act of a foreign State, under which Chinese courts can exercise jurisdiction, such as cases involving disputes arising out of a commercial activity, relevant personal injury and property damage. The Law also states that Chinese courts can take compulsory judicial measures against a foreign State’s commercial property under strictly limited circumstances. It fully adheres to international law and it is also consistent with general state practices.
As a responsible major country, China firmly upholds the principle of sovereign equality and will faithfully implement this Law to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese nationals and legal persons and respect the immunities enjoyed by foreign States under international law.
Translation: The USA and other Western governments, including Canada, have increasingly been utilizing their courts to the detriment of Chinese corporations and individuals. China is clearly going to follow their lead by giving its courts the power to exercise jurisdiction over foreign entities and individuals who had previously been considered off-limits on the basis of foreign state immunity.
Given how little foreign investment there is in mainland China, one would tend to expect the primary application of this expanded jurisdiction will be in Hong Kong, and eventually, Taiwan.
I expect Taiwan to peacefully unify with the mainland much sooner than most people are expecting, and I strongly suspect that it will be someone like this man who will make it happen when the time comes. Despite his public statements, I would assume that he is, for all intents and purposes, the CPC’s preferred candidate for the office, because when China eventually makes its move for reunification, it will want to have a pragmatic figure in control of Taiwan’s government in order to avoid violence and bloodshed.

Gou should not be able to come anywhere close to winning in normal political circumstances. He couldn’t even win the Kuomintang nomination. But given the fact that the outcome of the NATO-Russian war should be known by the time the election takes place in 2024, combined with the increased US activity in southeast Asia, the fear of being similarly sacrificed on the altar of US geostrategic interests may be enough to move the Taiwanese electorate away from the separatist parties.
