"2000 Mules" is available in its entirety for free this weekend on X.
This isn't an edited, pirated version, but the full movie.
Even if you doubt or disagree with its premise, it is worth watching, so you can form more coherent arguments against the conspiracy theorists.
Please set aside the time to watch this if you haven't seen it yet.

my bananas got up to about 8', but haven't flowered, so probably not this year. they had a hard time due to the extreme record low temps back in december, I believe. I have neighbors that didn't get any blueberries or peaches. we got blueberries, but only about half what we normally get, and they were small. sneaky late spring freeze (in April, grrr!).
maybe next year....

or just pee on them when no one is looking.
they also like a lot of "potash" (potassium)...
a 2 year old banana might still produce fruit even after die back - with the right soil and plenty of water - they are very thirsty plants.

in reply to Otto Pureblood • • •Well, yeah, I think even if they flowered now, they'd need 3 months to mature and that puts us in December. We'd need temps to stay in the 50's at night through December to make this work. so....

I posted that my neighbour's little dogs go to the bathroom on a spot of lawn, and it thrives like a jungle. The thickest, darkest grass we have. So maybe only some breeds kill grass. I mow for a living and dog waste is usually good for lawns.

@J R - they need a little extra care in the winter - you have to bury the stalk in hay or leaves so they don't freeze. In their native environment, I think they take 9 months to fruit. In colder environments, it's like 15 months (@Otto Pureblood can check me on that). The idea in colder climates with burying the stalk in leaves is so they can get a head start in spring. Once they flower, it's 90 days to fruit, so I was hoping they would flower in June or at least July. maybe next year.

the dog - well, he's a male, so if you just water where he pees, it tones it down a bit.
we had a dog growing up that had a sister up the road, and we'd let them play together. when the dogs would pee, his sister's pee would kill the grass, and his would make it green except for a brown spot in the middle (too concentrated). I think our vet said to just water the spot after he peed, and it would dilute the nitrogen and stop killing the grass. But he said some female dogs just kill the grass no matter what. so I don't know, but that's what I do if he pees on the plants.

in reply to Otto Pureblood • • •I'm in 9B but frost will kill the leaves and smaller plants. My sister lives in SC near Myrtle Beach and has banana strain that is more cold resistant.
I mainly use them to feed the chickens. Every part above ground is edible for them. We have over 100 growing... So I can cut off the weaker plants to feed to the chickens about ince a week. They grow back quick. I also have 12 papaya growing this year... Which the chickens go bonkers for. But fruit isn't usually ready until November...

No. This is how its done. I can't use 15-20 hands of bananas getting ripe all at once.
The bananas you buy at the store where picked green too.
They ripen fine in the wicker basket I have on the kitchen counter.
