Location data firm helps US police find out when suspects visited their doctor

The image shows a detailed aerial view of a city at night, possibly in a suburban or residential area. The foreground is dominated by a detailed map, showcasing the intricate network of streets, buildings, and even small parks or green spaces. The background is dark, emphasizing the nighttime setting and highlighting the illuminated buildings as small points of light, creating a sense of depth and scale. Five white markers are placed on the map, drawing the viewer’s attention to specific locations within the city. The markers seem evenly distributed, suggesting a planned or strategic placement.
A location-tracking company that sells its services to police departments is apparently using addresses and coordinates of doctors’ and lawyers’ offices and other types of locations to help cops compile lists of places visited by suspects, according to a 404 Media report published today.

Fog Data Science, which says it “harness[es] the power of data to safeguard national security and provide law enforcement with actionable intelligence,” has a “Project Intake Form” that asks police for locations where potential suspects and their mobile devices might be found.

Who needs a surveillance state when the data can just be purchased by the government?

This all comes down to the power of aggregating lots of metadata. If one takes just a single app like WhatsApp where the T&C’s allow for a full range of metadata to be collected by the app and passed upstream to Meta, who leaks data to 3rd parties, it is very easy to see how all this is possible. WhatsApp (just as an example as it is not known whether WhatsApp is the source of this data) knows who you talk to, when you talk to them, where you are exactly, where you live, how often you use your phone, what roads you travel on, where you visit, and lost more. It may not be able to read your E2EE messages, but it knows everything else, and its users have given consent for the data to be passed to 3rd parties.

I really have no idea how such information can be allowed to be traded and sold to interested parties. Many countries only allow such data to be collected and provided to law enforcement after a court order is obtained by law enforcement. As TikTok is still Chinese owned, I’m doubting if this data is being provided by TikTok to US data brokers. It is more likely US owned social networks providing this data themselves (purely my guess, though).

I can see why more and more users are distrusting these companies which provide free services, and then sell their data. The thing is, if law enforcement and governments are buying the data to get around their own legal restrictions, I just don’t see this situation really changing.

As users, we need to shun the use of such services (which is why I deleted my WhatsApp account when the T&C’s changed). It is also worth trying to rather use social networks that fall under the legislation of more privacy-friendly countries. Which also makes me a bit suspicious of why the US wants to maybe force the sale of TikTok to a US company… If that happens, I’ll be deleting my TikTok account too.

It seems more and more to me that social networks are the ideal way to find out who goes where and who they are communicating with… There is certainly lots of economic value in this, otherwise data brokers would not be doing such a roaring trade. They should just be aware though that they are very likely breaking the privacy laws of many non-US countries (not just the EU) if those citizens data is being sold in the USA. It’s time these other countries woke up and took note of what is going on.

“To the Feds, I'll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn't working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, a lot of patience. The spiral notebook, if present, has some straggling notes and To Do lists that illuminate the gist of it. My tech is pretty locked down because I work in engineering so probably not much info there. I do apologize for any strife of traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming. A reminder: the US has the #1 most expensive healthcare system in the world, yet we rank roughly #42 in life expectancy. United is the [indecipherable] largest company in the US by market cap, behind only Apple, Google, and Walmart. It has grown and grown, but as our life expectancy? No the reality is, these [indecipherable] have simply gotten too powerful, and they continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allowed them to get away with it. Obviously the problem is more complex, but I do not have space, and frankly I do not pretend to be the most qualified person to lay out the full argument. But many have illuminated the corruption and greed (e.g.: Rosenthal, Moore), decades ago and the problems simply remain. It is not an issue of awareness at this point, but clearly power games at play. Evidently I am the first to face it with such brutal honesty.”

I'm seeing "sus" used a lot these days but I' m not sure if it means the same way it means in #Filipino .

In Filipino, it's an expression that has existed since the 20th C. It can mean, "dismiss" (an idea/object), "meh", or "frustration". We pronounce it literally as /sus/ (/숫/) (/ᜐᜓᜐ᜔/). It originated from the expression "susmaryosep" which is the shortened form of "Hesus Marya Yosep" (Jesus Mary Joseph).

in reply to royal

@royal It's amazing. I mean, the concept of Among Us, if I understood it correctly (I haven't played it 😅), was similar to classic offline games and board games, like Cluedo, yet we didn't shorten it to "sus". 😅 I mean, we din't say "you're sus, I think you're the murderer", yet we did say something like, "bbl, I'll buy a drink" or "gtg, bye".

Among Us really did leave an imprint in cultures and languages.

Tik Tokers are telling each other they are "seen and valid" for having a sexual fetish for a murderer.

They're gonna need another flag.

Hybristophilia: a paraphilia involving sexual interest in and attraction to those who commit crimes. The term is derived from the Greek word hubrizein (ὑβρίζειν), meaning "to commit an outrage against someone" (ultimately derived from hubris ὕβρις, "hubris"), and philo, meaning "having a strong affinity/preference for."

“To be a dictator (benevolent or otherwise) is to exist without the _consequences_ that prevent you from giving in to those impulses. Worse: if you are the dictator — again, benevolent or otherwise — of a big, structurally important company or nonprofit that millions of people rely on, the _consequences_ of these lapses are extremely consequential.”

I've been anticipating something about BDFLs from @pluralistic. It was definitely worth the wait.

It deserves emphasis that the writer of the manifesto was raised in a wealthy family whose Italian immigrant founder (his grandfather) made his fortune off of managed care facilities, then real estate, country clubs, & conservative radio. His sister is a doctor. Their family has an obstetrics wing in a Baltimore hospital named after them, because they've given so much $. He volunteered at his family's nursing home. He's familiar with this business. His cousin headed Trump's MD election fund.
in reply to Erin Conroy

From NYT piece this morning: "The family also owned the radio station WCBM, which airs politically conservative programs…cousin, Nino Mangione, is a [GOP politician & chaired Trump election fund]…

“It is just such a… prominent family within Baltimore County,”

…high school at the prestigious Gilman School in Baltimore…valedictorian of his graduating class…

particularly smart — perhaps the smartest [at Gilman] social, friendly & never particularly political"

in reply to Erin Conroy

The other thing that deserves emphasis - though I don't know whether the manifesto writer was aware or not - is that the #UnitedHealth CEO was being investigated by the FBI both for UHC monopoly/antitrust violations, & his own apparent stock market fraud/insider trading in response to that FBI probe. Personal profit.

$102m in offloaded stock by UHC c-suite when such trades ought to have been frozen.

DOJ probe was "reviewing whether #UnitedHealth’s acquisitions have consolidated its position in some markets in a way that violates antitrust laws…[DOJ] has reportedly been looking at potential monopolies in the managed-care industry since at least mid-2023."

"Typically a company’s general counsel would declare a blackout period barring trading in light of a sensitive investigation, according to John C. Coffee Jr., a corporate governance expert at Columbia Law School.

UHC didn't do that.

But I guess none of these multi-millionaire FBI suspects were Black children wearing hoodies or carrying Skittles, so even though they actually deserve to have their potentially criminal activities scrutinized in the public eye for months on end, we will probably instead be treated to endlessly empathetic media junk-food treatments by wealthy white pundits who focus on the suffering of their family members.

This moment is interesting to me.

It's a little like a scan that uses contrast dye to help clarify internal function of body systems. Some people are willing to show their immoral beliefs that help our sick system function: i.e., that some of us (most!) are marked for violence, & in their eyes, our deaths are pre-approved, unremarkable.

But a few big men are special, set aside as privileged from violence. Their deaths are un-acceptable, to be noisily declared unfair. Worthy of social insurance

in reply to Erin Conroy

For some people, literally anything is accepted to justify or excuse their murder, & offer a helping hand to their killer: a hoodie is suspicious, Skittles could have looked like a gun to the right-wing murderer.

For others, literally nothing is accepted to excuse their murder: e.g., profiting personally from a position of power & responsibility which the CEO used to intentionally cause his company's paying customers to die.

OK.

It's useful to have diagnostic tests.

in reply to Erin Conroy

And, one thing that you & I can do, right now, is to really look at the people who are making excuses for the vast majority of the killing. In this case, any fair reading of reality demonstrates that the United CEO, and his collaborators are killing way more of us. They make choices to kill their own paying customers, so that they make themselves & their families into multimillionaires.

We are responsible for the media diet we’re consuming. Imo this dye test shows who’s clogging our arteries.

I do not condone murder.

However, murder sanctioned by the profit motive remains morally, still murder.

The C E O does not personally wield the weapon, he leads the army following his orders to use the system to maximize profits.

Nowhere above is any mention of obligations to those whom health insurance would putatively serve.

Instead, people are the grass trampled under their feet, a meal for the worms

Nothing more than a pathway to more money.

You've probably seen a clip of Donald Trump say very inappropriate things about his own daughter, I think everyone knows the “if Ivanka wasn't my daughter, perhaps I'd be dating her” clip.

While it's easy and almost expected to poke fun of such statements for political gain, as they directly insinuate incest and hence Trump as disgusting, I believe reality is far worse.

Trump and the horde of grifters following him simply do not view women as anything but objects. They're so dehumanizing and sexist, that the biggest compliment for a woman they could think of, even if they are their own daughters, is that they find them attractive, or “fuckable”. That's the horrid reality behind those already worrying statements.

The “good” news is that a doctor can diagnose high blood pressure (also called hypertension) in just a few minutes. All too typically, the doctor will then prescribe an antihypertensive ...

Before Replacing Your Phone Battery Watch This — Scams Abound

The image shows a pile of counterfeit iPhone batteries in the foreground, with more batteries visible in the background. A person's hand is peeling back the label of one battery to reveal inconsistencies. The most striking detail is the discrepancy between the labeling on the batteries. While some batteries have labels claiming to be authentic Apple products, a close examination reveals inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the labeling.
Bottom line is, you really cannot trust ad hoc online or flea market sellers (and neither Facebook Marketplace sellers). As shown in this video, even 500+ “positive” reviews really mean nothing at all. That online “bargain” may not just cost you a fake battery, but could even damage your device.
