Today I am migrating a Windows 7 installation from a slow hard drive to a faster SSD and then adding a Linux Mint (Debian Edition) dual boot.
Used Samsung Migration Tool to go from the slow hard drive to Samsung SSD, then will use CloneZilla to copy that to a larger SSD, then will install the Linux dual-boot.
This is on a Dell Studio XPS 435mt - an interesting machine with LGA1366 socket. This one has a first gen Intel i7 and 12GB memory.

I ended up having to use a CloneZilla image of a previous Windows XP Pro installation that I had, as I couldn't get the burned CD to work or the USB installer (well, I sort of got the USB installer to work but ended up with a Windows installation on drive "E:" instead of the familiar and default "C:").
The clonezilla image was of an XP Pro install on an Optiplex 760 that I had done for a customer earlier. Saved the image in case they needed it or I needed it.
Cloning to the Optiplex 3010 ended up with Windows XP booting and not blue screening, which surprised me as that often happens when putting an XP install on different hardware.
But it took about ten minutes of sitting there and a reboot or two before the keyboard and mouse were recognized. After that, I ran Snappy Driver Installer to get all the other drivers for the Optiplex 3010 in XP.

Trump is an Originalist, I believe. He aims to bring the USA back to the ideals of its Revolution and free us all to fulfil our moral obligations as free but responsible individuals who are all working towards the success of ourselves, our families, our communities and our nation.
To accomplish this goal, he must boldly undertake a revolutionary approach to his second administration. We have seen radical proposals (tantalisingly foreshadowed in Argentina) that include the elimination of bureaucracy and income tax, etc.
I expect to see further revolutionary moves in terms of state's rights. It is not enough for Trump to destroy the federal administrative/deep state. He must also reinvigorate the individual states such that they step up and take back their proper role within the Constitutional framework.
The destruction of the Swamp is boggling enough. But take a big step forward from that and imagine and even more radical shift across the nation, with 50 different but equally radical advancements by each state as it manifests its own version of Originalist freedom and responsibility.
This may seem possible in 'red' states. But imagine California, New York, Illinois, etc., also finding their feet and marching towards this goal, this destiny, this re-manifestation of Revolution.
I suspect that Trump has a goal, an ambition, to bring all 50 states back into the fold of Constitutional governance and operation. I suspect that not only is there a federal swamp to be drained by Trump (and then Vance since this will be a long process), there are 50 swamps to be drained, one in each state capitol city.

Les risques s’accumulent pour le projet AUKUS. A la place, l’Australie devrait se préparer à construire des SSN français

L’Australie devrait commencer à planifier l’acquisition d’au moins 12 sous-marins de conception française Suffren. Le plan actuel AUKUS pour huit sous-marins d’attaque à propulsion nucléaire (SSN) a toujours été médiocre, et maintenant les risques s’accumulent. Nous pouvons aller de l’avant avec les aspects opérationnels navals du plan SSN d’AUKUS, tels que le soutien des sous-marins américains et britanniques lorsqu’ils arrivent en Australie. Mais pour l’effort d’acquisition, nous devrions être prêts à abandonner le projet d’acheter huit SSN dans le cadre d’AUKUS ; trois aux États-Unis qu’il est de plus en plus improbable que Washington fournisse, et cinq qui sont censés être construits selon un design britannique surdimensionné et ne seront probablement pas livrés dans les temps.
Au lieu de cela, nous devrions lancer un programme conjoint de construction franco-australien pour un plus grand nombre de sous-marins de la classe Suffren, une conception déjà en service dans la marine nationale.

Les conceptions des sous-marins seraient un mélange de deux blocs de sous-marins de classe Virginia, séparés par plus de 14 ans de conception, et de SSN-AUKUS, encore à concevoir, utilisant le réacteur PWR3 britannique, encore à tester. De plus, les SSN-AUKUS seraient en partie construit par l’entreprise sous-marine britannique sous-performante qui subit parallèlement une forte pression pour livrer la prochaine classe de sous-marins lance-missiles balistiques de la Royal Navy.
Déplaçant plus de 10 000 tonnes, les sous-marins SSN-AUKUS seront trop gros pour les besoins de l’Australie. Leur taille augmentera leur détectabilité, leur coût et leurs équipages. (La grande taille semble être dû aux dimensions du réacteur.)
La Royal Australian Navy est déjà incapable d’équiper ses navires et de se développer pour répondre aux demandes futures. Elle aura beaucoup de difficulté à équiper des Virginias, qui ont besoin de 132 personnes chacune, et des bateaux SSN-AUKUS, également, si leurs équipages égalent les quelque 100 nécessaires pour la classe Astute britannique actuelle.
Nous n’avons pas encore vu de calendrier pour le processus de conception britannique, et une équipe de conception commune ne semble pas avoir été établie. En l’absence de nouvelles indiquant que des jalons ont été atteints ou même fixés, il est fort probable que le programme SSN-AUKUS, comme le programme Astute, sera en retard et livrera un bateau de première classe avec de nombreux problèmes. Savoir que l’Examen de la défense stratégique de la Grande-Bretagne est aux prises avec de graves déficits de financement n’inspire guère confiance.
De plus, huit SSN sont nécessaires pour maintenir le déploiement d’un ou deux seulement à tout moment, ce qui n’est pas suffisant pour une dissuasion efficace. La difficulté de former les équipages et d’acquérir de l’expérience dans trois conceptions de sous-marins ajouterait aux défis évidents de la chaîne d’approvisionnement pour atteindre une force opérationnelle.
Même atteindre cette capacité inadéquate est de moins en moins probable. Des rapports faits lors du récent symposium de la US Navy Submarine League révèlent que les États-Unis continuent de ne pas augmenter leurs rythme de construction de sous-marins. À ce jour, un sous-marin supplémentaire aurait dû être commandé pour couvrir le transfert d’un bloc IV Virginia existant vers l’Australie dans huit ans, mais aucun contrat n’a été passé. Pire encore, la production de Virginia chez les deux constructeurs de sous-marins américains ralentit en raison de retards dans la chaîne d’approvisionnement. Le programme de construction navale prioritaire des États-Unis, pour les sous-marins lance-missiles balistiques de la classe Columbia, continue de subir des retards. Fin novembre, la Maison Blanche a demandé un financement d’urgence au Congrès pour les programmes du Virginia et du Colombia.
Cette situation signale une probabilité croissante que, malgré tous ses efforts, la marine américaine sera incapable de mettre de côté les Virginias à vendre à l’Australie. Le président du jour sera probablement incapable, comme l’exige la législation, de certifier 270 jours avant le transfert que cela ne dégradera pas les capacités sous-marines américaines.
Pendant ce temps, l’establishment britannique de soutien aux sous-marins a des difficultés à acheminer les SSN vers la mer. Un récent incendie affectant la livraison du dernier SSN de classe Astute ne peut qu’ajouter à ces malheurs.
La classe de SSN Suffren française était la conception de référence pour la classe d’attaque diesel que l’Australie avait l’intention d’acheter avant de passer aux SSN de l’AUKUS. Il offre la solution à nos problèmes d’AUKUS. Il est en production par Naval Group, avec trois des six sous-marins prévus mis en service dans la marine française.
À 5300 tonnes et avec une autonomie de 70 jours, une capacité de 24 torpilles ou missiles, quatre tubes lance-torpilles et un équipage de 60 personnes, il serait moins coûteux à construire, à posséder et à équiper que les sous-marins AUKUS. La conception est flexible ; optimisée pour la guerre anti-sous-marine mais avec une bonne capacité anti-surface grâce aux torpilles à double usage et aux missiles de croisière anti-navires. Il peut également transporter des missiles de croisière d’attaque terrestre, des mines et des forces spéciales.
Le Suffren utilise du combustible à uranium faiblement enrichi et doit être ravitaillée tous les 10 ans, alors que les modèles américains et britanniques, avec de l’uranium hautement enrichi, sont destinés à ne jamais être ravitaillés. Mais le réacteur du Suffren est conçu pour simplifier le ravitaillement, qui pourrait être achevé lors d’un radoub programmé en Australie. Le combustible irradié peut être retraité, ce qui simplifie le déclassement en fin de vie.
Certes, la conception du Suffren n’a pas la charge d’arme, les tubes de missiles à lancement vertical ou l’endurance de 90 jours du Virginia et, vraisemblablement, du SSN-AUKUS. Cependant, en tant que parent à propulsion nucléaire de la classe d’attaque, il est beaucoup plus proche de l’exigence australienne initiale de remplacement de la classe Collins que les SSN-AUKUS. La conception offre une capacité adéquate pour les besoins de l’Australie dans un ensemble que nous pouvons nous permettre de posséder. Nous pourrions exploiter 12 Suffrens et avoir encore besoin de moins de membres d’équipage que nous le ferions dans le cadre du plan AUKUS.
Si nous sommes passés à la conception du Suffren, nous devrions néanmoins nous en tenir aux programmes de formation SSN que nous avons organisés avec l’US Navy et la Royal Navy. Nous devrions également aller de l’avant avec la création d’une installation de réparation intermédiaire qui soutiendrait leurs SSN ainsi que les nôtres, avec leur rotation à travers l’Australie occidentale.
En ce qui concerne le plan d’acquisition d’AUKUS, nous devons commencer dès maintenant les préparatifs pour construire conjointement des Suffrens avec la France. L’Australie a hâte que les États-Unis avouent enfin que les Virginias ne seront pas disponible. Dans la mesure où la conception doit être modifiée, nous pouvons revenir au travail effectué pour la classe d’attaque, en particulier l’incorporation d’un système de combat américain et des normes australiennes. Difficile, stimulant et politiquement courageux ? Sûrement. Mais pas aussi improbable que d’obtenir les SSN d’AUKUS à temps.
