What is the retro computer you once had, and wish you could get back?
1: GRiDCASE 1520. It had a lovely red plasma display, amazing keyboard, and the thing was made out of thick magnesium which seemed almost indestructable. Later model became the first laptop to go into space. 286/10, 1MB.
2: NeXTstation/Turbo. I picked up a working complete system with monitor and all accessories for $100 at a local swap-meet in the late '90s. It was quite fun, but at that point it could no longer compete with the cheap x86 hardware flooding the market.

I was listening to the latest episode of The Climate Pod the other day (really good climate change podcast) and they had a guest on who was talking about how to deal with climate anxiety in a productive way, one of the ways being, rolling up one's sleeves and working to help prepare your community for whatever climate change brings your way. And it got me thinking about how we really should be investing in establishing more community gardens, buying up even small plots of land to re-wild, setting up seed banks, things like that. Because only through community do we have a chance of weathering the coming storm. We're going to need each other. What sorts of things are your communities doing to be more resilient?

You know, thinking about it, the only reason why drug companies can charge exorbitant amounts for cheaply-produced medications is with the connivance of insurers.
If everyone had to pay the retail price, many people wouldn't be able to pay for those drugs at all - so, by the "law of supply and demand" that people keep going on about, the pharmaceutical producer would have to lower those prices to be able to sell the drug.
But insurance companies negotiate "discounts" for their members, so the actual sales remain high - and almost nobody is paying the retail price.
This is pretty clear collusion to defraud the consumer, on the one hand, and also to create incentives for people to buy insurance - which is pretty coercive.
It also vastly distorts the profitability of the companies in question, which misleads investors - so kind of securities fraud, if you look at it in the right light.

Hi #Fediverse, I've got myself into a bit of a bind 😊
I have been working with a local primary school to try to get them to adopt the fediverse either through Pixelfed or Bookwyrm.
However it's become clear that this exposes the users to too much risk if I use an existing instance.
So....if you were to be setting up a fediverse instance for a class in a primary school, what would you choose (Pixelfed, Bookwyrm, Mastodon etc) and has anybody done this before?
For instance - if I went with a small Mastodon instance and didn't federate with anybody, presumably that would work? Same for other platforms? And then (potentially) could federate with other classes in the same or different schools?
I think a mastodon server may be your best bet because it is compatible with Pixelfed feeds but is more maintained.
You probably want to unfederate from everyone for privacy concerns.
I will be doing a similar setup soon and am thinking to run it on a raspberry pi at work but I am looking at using a service called syncloud for easy set up.
