The timing is deliberate. There have been aircraft in our skies on a consistent basis since forever. There have been commercial and consumer drones (which are being used to generate blurry footage to fuel that which is not obviously simply aircraft in the sky) for years and years. The internet has been around for quite a while as has YouTube, etc. What is happening now is not mere hysteria, it is an affirmative choice to do something.
We are about 5 weeks away from Trump's inauguration. In about ten days, we will enter the peak distraction time that runs from Christmas Eve through New Year's Day.
I am making the presumption that those still in power are doing everything that they possibly can stuff into these few weeks to line their pockets, cover their asses, and stick it to Trump.
The Biden administration's moves to auction off unused border wall sections are emblematic of this sort of thing. They will do everything fro the grand (more billions to Ukraine) to the petty (the wall section auction), etc., in the brief time they have left.
About all we can do at this point is try to avoid distraction, pay attention to whatever else we can see happening (and point it out!), and pray for Trump's safety until and beyond the inauguration.
There are over 160,000 professional (ATP rated) pilots in the USA. Exactly none of them would fly an aircraft worth many tens of millions of dollars, with many souls (including their own) on board, into airspace where there were drones of various sizes flitting about here and there at various altitudes.
Were these drones a reality, we would have dozens, perhaps hundreds, of aircraft on the ground with flight crews refusing to take off until the hazards in their area and in that of their intended landing were resolved.
Ignore the "look here not there" stuff and decide for yourself where your attention will be invested.

It is just so hugely overt. Both in terms of obvious misidentification of planes, etc., and in terms of drones with big giant "look at me" lights in the cases where it appears they are in fact drones.
Quiet, unlit, and well equipped drones are widely available and if something fishy (other than a 'look here, not there" operation) were going on, I'd expect that they'd use these such that they would pretty much never be seen.
on a second note. These drones really do pose a problem for our aircraft. We have a small airport nearby as well as emergency helicopters. My daughter works in one. Also if they we weaponized, how do we as civilians protect ourselves? So we need some sort of metal umbrella to hide under? It’s something we all need to be aware of and involved in. @bob you mean android? yeah, thats going to be the last thing to go, unfortunately. its probably the most important thing to go, but its the hardest to tackle. people with far more tech expertise than myself dont seem to be too confident in a linux phone being their daily driver and/or its insanely cost prohibitive.
I use a cheap track phone and am thinking it's time for a new one then nuke this one... Maybe if it works, nuke the new one but I'd like a backup just in case it doesn't work.
Same things I did when I first started using Linux on desktops. My first time, double boot with MicroShit but years of fucking MicroShit, I just got fed up and went full Linux. Phones on the other hand, is a new ballgame.
@bob my foray into linux was that i completely lost my shit with how much i hated windows. so i didnt even double boot. thankfully the two pieces of software i needed for school at the time, were both linux compatible AND the student version install discs had the linux version available. even then, i eventually replaced those with foss analogs lol. the phone i think will be a similar thing. i f'ing hate the smart phone. when i go linux, im going head first, and if people cant get a hold of me for a few days while i figure out... im not gonna be heartbroken about it ;)

Climate change is making geopolitics less stable, which harms climate action. This will worsen climate change, meaning more geopolitical instability, and so on. The risk is that this “doom loop” runs faster and faster and ultimately derails our ability to phase out fossil fuels fast enough to avoid the worst climate consequences.

Mich würde es keineswegs überraschen wenn da irgendwas schief läuft. Briefwahl Unterlagen zu spät verschickt, Stimmzettel fehlerhaft bedruckt oder nicht ausreichend Papier vorhanden, Wahlhelfer krank, irgendsowas. Oder irgendwas passiert bei der Auszählung so das dann die Wahl wiederholt werden muss.

The goal of Workbench has always been to be fully sandboxed to reduce the risk of running code that would harm the user or the system.
Over time and as the Library covered more and more desktop integration examples, we made exceptions for --share=network (for HTTP/WebSocket) and --socket=pulseaudio (for audio playback).
A new Library entry “Gamepad” by GSoC 2023 student José Hunter would have required us to add --device=all. This would have been too risky; in particular for beginners.
I took the time to remove the problematic permissions and add a dialog that request user action when sandbox permissions are required
If you are tempted to do this in your apps, please don't. This is a temporary measure until we get the appropriate Flatpak permissions or portals to handle these safely.
While imperfect, in the case of Workbench which targets beginners and can be used to execute any code; it is better than opening sandbox holes by default.

An experimental port of Firefox Iceweasel is now available on HaikuDepot! So far, most sites are working fine. YouTube video playback is fine and Discord just works, however the web browser does occasionally take itself down. Still rather usable, though! If @ActionRetro thought that Haiku was ready for daily driving with Falkon (see first screenshot), then rebranded Firefox surely has to make it even more viable by those standards!
It should be noted though that just like with Falkon, some crash dialogs can be ignored (drag them to another workspace) and the web browser can still be used.
