That's this weekend's #allotment vlog done, mostly just moving our unexpected woodchip bounty... including filling a 1.2m³ compost bay with the material and making a ventilation pipe for that bay... plus worries about microplastics from cutting/modifying plastic items like the ventilation pipe.

After 24 hours you could remove the ventilation pipe to reduce microplastics. By then the wood chip heap will have stabilised and it’ll leave the aeration hole in place when you remove the pipe.
I only put the downpipes in place temporarily when I’m building a pile. If the aeration hole starts to close up later (usually from bird or worm activity) I’ll just widen it with a wood or metal pole.
Your pile will hot compost very nicely with that mix of greens and browns. Lovely stuff.

Most of my microplastic concerns come from the cutting the slits into the pipe. If it was to be used just as a former then you could just not bother with the slits at all... in fact it could even just be a wooden post I guess.
Yes any poles would be fine used as a former. With the caveat that using downpipes with air holes do help to bring a heap up to a hot composting temperature in that first crucial 24-48 hours.
Of course, fresh wood chip like yours won’t have that problem, that will get up to and maintain a hot temperature very nicely.
I have five salvaged mini downpipes. I’ll add them when I start a new pile and often when I turn a larger older pile. #Compost #Mulch
@Broadfork You guys are discussing exactly what I've been thinking about recently! I've just removed the plastic ventilation pipes from my pile. They certainly helped, but they were getting in the way of fresh material in the stage one lot, and I've been wondering about plastic pollution too, as I drilled holes in them. I'm thinking from now on I might stick with periodically aerating with stakes and just using the pipes when I start or turn a pile. 👍
@MostlyTato @Broadfork yeah, I'm not particularly comfortable with doing this to a pipe again... it generated a lot of plastic dust. But once I'd started I felt kinda committed to completing it. I was thinking of maybe poking holes through with a soldering iron but that's also potentially pretty toxic vapourising/burning PVC or ABS. Anyway, it's done now and will hopefully be an asset to our composting - as you suggest I'll use it when I fill a bay or turn material into an empty bay.
I will no doubt still need to cut plastic from time to time, but no need to proliferate it more than really necessary.

Not knowing enough about it I’d be wary of planting the wrong bamboo in case it gets out of hand. A screen of bamboo I could regularly cut for gardening uses would be quite good to have.
@alyssa @MostlyTato @Broadfork Yeah, I grew up with a few plants in Western Australia that were considered "destroy on sight" invasive and was amused to move to the UK and find people growing them ornamentally here... arum lilies being one of those, they have one on the property here and every time I see it my gut reaction is: EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE! The groundskeeper has actually sprayed that whole bed with glyphosate regularly* and it just shrugs it off... same as back home. Unkillable. But if it was back home the entire bed would be a mass of them, then the driveway, then the lawn, then the whole property... not just one tame little innocuous-seeming plant. 😂
Running bamboos can be a nightmare even here, but I suspect many aren't near as bad here as they might be in warmer wet climates.

@alyssa @Broadfork I've heard it can be invasive. I have a few stands of it growing and it doesn't seem too bad. The stuff I found is perfect for canes though, each one at 6 ft tall!
@alyssa @Broadfork Haha I have arum lilies 😂 I also have arum maculatum and arum italicum, both of which have people in certain parts of the world pulling their hair out due to their invasiveness. Mine are fine, just form distinct clumps. The two things I wish I hadn't planted are petasites and wild strawberries 😲

I don't have an issue with the national postal service running a Mastodon instance. I'd welcome it, actually. That said, I don't love the privacy laws in my country of residence and prefer my personal instance somewhere with stronger privacy laws.
My preference though would be to have the postal service run an instance AND improve our privacy laws so that using an instance here wasn't an issue.

@Evan Prodromou My national postal service isn't that good at moving post around, has a pretty bad website, and their banking service has an online platform that has dodgy behaviors even when compared to the online banking platforms of other banks. oh, and they are quite proud of their partnership with microsoft. And they are a company rather than a public service

I'm not sure anyone at Apple ever actually used Apple Music. My use case is the following: - I start a radio, mixing songs I added to my library with related songs - A song I don't have in my library plays, and I happen to like it enough to want to add the song to my library. - Too bad, the song ended and the radio moved to the next song. The previous button is greyed out, there's no playlist page for this radio, and there's no Listening History available.
I'm absolutely confused by this behavior. Is it a licensing thing where songs can be played as part of a radio for cheaper than if they are presented in an actual playlist, even if it's automatically generated?
@Hypolite Petovan Plex Media (server) with tidal and personal collection works well. Tidal doesn't have all the music I like, thus I stopped using it. YouTube music loves to bombard you with music it wants you to hear, regardless of your ratings on said song. YouTube premium does not change this. Only removes ads.

PRRI has just published a post-election study with important findings about the role religion – specifically, white Christians – have played all along in empowering Trump. PRRI CEO Robert P. Jones summarizes three key takeaways from the study:
1. "As has been the case for the last four decades, when the political parties began sorting themselves along ethno-religious lines in the wake of the Civil Rights movement, the largest voting divides among Christian voters are marked by racial and ethnic identity."
White evangelicals remain Trump's staunchest supporters, with 85% voting for him in 2024, along with some 6 in 10 white Catholics and white mainline Protestants.
The only non-white Christian voting bloc supporting Trump are Latino Protestants, almost all evangelicals. By contrast, a majority of Latino Catholics voted for Harris along with an overwhelming majority of Black Protestants.
2. "There is no evidence to support what I have identified as two 'zombie myths' (because they just won’t die despite lack of evidence) about white evangelical voters: 1) that they were reluctant Trump voters; or 2) that Trump’s strongest supporters in this group were Christians-in-name-only (CINO)."
White Christians vote ardently, not reluctantly, for Trump. The more churchgoing they are, the more ardent they are about him.
White Christians own this Trump presidency as they owned his 2016 Trump presidency. And whatever happens with this presidency, including promised massive cruelty to immigrants and LGBTQ people, they'll own every bit as much as they, a majority of them, owned (but refuse to admit) their defense of slavery, their support of Jim Crow barbarity, and their opposition to civil rights for people of color.
