I don't feel anything good will be coming our way for years and when it does come the internet will be that last place it is found.
It seems obvious there will not be any other programs or companies or groups coming along that will be allowed to do anything but create nothing or steal what we already have. AI will see to that.

New idea: Want to contribute to a Fediverse-sourced #AOTY list, that includes your top album (or 3) of the year, where "top" is however you define it - favorite, most listened to, most personally important, etc. - and "of the year" does not necessarily mean the album was released in 2024, just was key in your 2024 listening, and you think others might dig it? If so, drop album name(s) below! If people like this idea, I might make it a special-edition post/sub-list for the #1001OtherAlbums blog.

An ecofriendly, high performance, organic battery from UNSW.
This is just one of a series of alternatives to lithium batteries now in the late-stages of contemporary research.

โ€œA team of scientists at UNSW Chemistry are developing an eco-friendly, high-performance organic battery that utilises protons.

By leveraging hydrogen ions โ€“ protons โ€“ instead of traditional lithium, these batteries hold promise for addressing some of the critical challenges in modern energy storage, including resource scarcity, environmental impact, safety and cost.

The material โ€“ tetraamino-benzoquinone (TABQ) โ€“ developed by PhD candidate Sicheng Wu and Professor Chuan Zhao, in collaboration with UNSW Engineering and ANSTO, has the ability to store energy quickly, last longer, and perform well under sub-zero conditions. โ€œ

Basically, this IG video asks: young white men felt lost so they listened to podcasts telling them that women ruined their lives & they voted for a man that looks like their father's boss. Young black men felt the same alienation but instead of crying about it, they put on berets, picked up shotguns & made the government feed starving kids. Why the difference?

Young black men didn't have the luxury of whining about their alienation.

in reply to ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ทGรถtterdรคmmerung

Fed kids. Built clinics. Became the thing the system feared most: organized. And the system responded like it always does: calling them terrorists, killing them in their sleep & burying stories of what they actually did.

Whereas young white men sat in basement full of privilege they don't recognize & resentment they cannot name. Angry at the world for not handing them purpose like their grandads got.

in reply to ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ทGรถtterdรคmmerung

Angry at women for not mothering them. Angry at black & brown people for just existing, for not being the scapegoat they need to feel powerful again. The Panthers built community. Those guys built Reddit threads.

The Panthers forced the system to feed kids cuz their free breakfast made it look weak. They forced it to respond. Alienated kids today? They're not forcing anything but the rest of us to suffer their temper tantrums.

Professionally speaking, Iโ€™ve made a decision so bold it borders on absurd: Iโ€™ve built a career where I talk to absolutely no one.

No meetings, no clients, no small talk about last nightโ€™s gameโ€”just me, some data, a pile of math, and the questionable judgment to fund it all myself.

No safety net, no coworkers to cover my blunders, and definitely no LinkedIn-worthy titles like โ€œCEOโ€ or โ€œVisionary Disruptorโ€ to stroke my ego. My job is so solitary, Iโ€™m practically a ghost.

The only thing that matters? Whether my process works.

When it does, Iโ€™m gold. When it doesnโ€™t, Iโ€™m just a weirdo staring at spreadsheets in sweatpants.

This year? Iโ€™m on a good path โ€“ exceeding even my best-case projections.

But the thing is, Iโ€™ve sustained myself for a year. And thereโ€™s no signs I will be unable to sustain myself next year.

Even if thereโ€™s famineโ€”and there will beโ€”I understand thereโ€™s such a thing called equilibrium, and data shows clear long-term trends.

Truth is, Iโ€™ve already dealt with famine and come out the other side stronger.

Affordable Web Design: Building a Strong Online Presence

Ever wondered how some websites achieve a premium look without a hefty price tag? As an expert who has guided countless small businesses in their online journey, Iโ€™m eager to divulge insider secrets on securing outstanding websites without overspending. Letโ€™s explore how to identify cheap web design services that prioritize quality.

Visualize web design as constructing a masterpiece with building blocksโ€”you donโ€™t need the priciest set to create something remarkable. Itโ€™s all about strategic planning and efficient use of resources.

Focusing on Core Requirements

Just as you wouldnโ€™t wear your entire wardrobe at once, your website doesnโ€™t require every flashy feature from the start. When searching for cheap web design services, concentrate on the core functionalities. A sleek, responsive website that performs seamlessly across devices serves as a robust foundationโ€”everything else can be layered on top.

Assessing DIY Possibilities

Imagine baking a birthday cake. While itโ€™s enjoyable to bake it yourself, sometimes itโ€™s wiser to seek assistance from a skilled baker. Similarly, while DIY website builders are available, professional cheap web design services can save you time and avoid costly errors.

Implementing Cost-Saving Measures

Utilizing pre-designed templates is akin to coloring within the lines of a coloring bookโ€”the structure is provided, and you simply infuse your unique style. Many cheap web design services offer these templates, allowing you to save money while maintaining a polished appearance.

Begin with the most critical pages, such as an About Us and Contact section. You can always expand later, much like adding more blocks to your structure. Remember, even minimalist designs can exude charm if complemented with high-quality visuals and engaging content.

Enhancing Collaboration with Designers

When engaging with cheap web design services, clear communication is vital. Think of it as placing a pizza orderโ€”you need to specify your preferences! Share examples of websites you admire, your preferred color schemes, and the functionalities you envision. Be transparent about your budget constraints.

Uncovering Hidden Talents

Sometimes, the most affordable web design services emerge from unexpected sources. Aspiring web designers, often students, bring fresh perspectives and competitive rates. Local designers may offer more personalized service compared to large firms. Some providers bundle services, akin to purchasing a complete meal instead of individual dishes.

Navigating Potential Traps

Just as you wouldnโ€™t purchase a bike without brakes, be cautious of designers who lack a portfolio, make unrealistic promises, or struggle to articulate their processes.

Ensuring Continuous Support

Obtaining a website is just the first step! When selecting cheap web design services, inquire about ongoing support to keep your site secure and updated. Itโ€™s akin to pet careโ€”regular attention ensures longevity and health.

Personalizing Your Online Space

The best cheap web design services will help you craft a website that feels uniquely yours. Itโ€™s like decorating your homeโ€”visitors should immediately sense your personal touch! Incorporate your favorite colors, tell your story through images, and use conversational language.

Envisioning Future Growth

Remember, affordability doesnโ€™t equate to inferiority! Numerous cost-effective web design services deliver professional, functional websites. The secret lies in finding a designer who aligns with your vision and helps you achieve it within your budget.

Consider future enhancements, such as e-commerce capabilities, video integration, or user comments. A forward-thinking website builder will assist you in planning for these additions, even if theyโ€™re not immediate priorities.

Whether youโ€™re a blogger, a small business owner, or an individual sharing your ideas, there are cheap web design services available to turn your online aspirations into reality. Just like building with blocks, the key is starting with a solid plan and progressively adding elements.

I'm terrible at coming up with #Volume names for drives.

Under #Windows I literally had my #drives labeled "DRIVE_D", "DRIVE_E", "DRIVE_F", etc. Which did help in the event the drive #letters got jumbled about (which happened about once every six months or so, usually when I'd attach a removable drive.)

But #Linux has no concept of "drive letters".

Am I crazy for using the drive's serial number as its Volume Label?
It is at least allowing me to keep track as to which drives I've re-formatted as #ext4+#Luks and which are still formatted as #NTFS though.

Thoughts?

in reply to George E. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธโ™ฅ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€โšง๏ธ

It makes sense in that you end up with a label that's physically on the disk as well as permanently in the queryable device info/firmware, so that's neat, though I prefer to label removable volumes according to their "purpose" if they have one, or if it's too general I won't bother with a label. The file manager will usually fall back to the filesystem UUID in that case though, so from that perspective the serial number really does seem like a better option for visually "mapping" it to the associated physical device.

But for uniquely identifying volumes programmatically (or in fstab for example) I'll always use the filesystem UUID or PARTUUID rather than relying on a label, so I never bother with labels for internal disks or removable disks that have a specific mountpoint
