I don’t quite get the critic about the 'MacBook'-like trackpad (which every PC maker has these days, apart from Lenovo). When you are using physical trackpad keys, you have to first navigate your cursor to the right position and then reposition your finger to the physical key. Instead, you can just tap right there with 1-3 fingers (tap, don’t press!). Better touchpads like those by Apple also don’t have a 'click zone' but allow you to physically press everywhere.

I know there is a lot of #military and patriotic #propaganda out there and the military industrial complex is on the rise because everyone wants to arm themselves because of the Russian #threat.
Let's pause for a moment and think about the reasons why #war is still being waged today:
1) The number one reason is still #religion. Religion serves to unite one's own #community, but is also always a demarcation against others. In Europe and Russia, religion only plays a subordinate role and the churches are struggling with insignificance.
2) The second important reason is natural #resources. Western Europe has long since used up its natural resources and is therefore plundering other countries, mainly in #Africa. Russia has enough natural resources of its own.
3) Population growth so that new living spaces are needed. In #Europe and #Russia, the #population is declining. As a result, many families only have one child and they don't want to lose it to the war.
4) Important geostrategic positions. Europe is losing importance. Russia's most important trading partners are in #Asia. Europe is strategically insignificant.
Europe is increasingly losing importance and therefore wants to feel important militarily. For Russia, an attack would bring no advantage and only high losses. Russia can infiltrate the weakened political system in Europe much more easily by manipulating elections and causing social unrest with propaganda. This hybrid warfare is much more successful than an open war.
I know Ukraine is not (yet) part of the EU, but is it not part of Europe?

During Soviet days, Russia dominated eastern Europe: Poland, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, etc., often by putting down revolutions (e.g., Hungary, 1956 and Czechoslovakia, 1968). Is Putin not thinking to restore Russian influence over eastern Europe?
And who exactly is this "we"? Russia wanted peace through conquering and making their enemies surrende and maybe there are people who want the Soviet Union back, so they approve it. And that does not even mean that Russia is inherently bad, it's mostly their boomers who are in power and still thinking in terms of a Soviet Union or the Cold War and violently repressing all opposition, sending their men to war despite the decline in population, changing policies on nuclear warfare, speeding up the production of arms and gathering allies(North Korea) for the current and coming wars. So until there is a regime change, they are enemies to western countries and to any Russian citizens opposed to the war and to Putin. IMHO any block-free states will be taken apart in the future just like Ukraine which only amplifies the importance of alliances like NATO or their counter-part BRICS. If you ever watched interviews with Putin on the topic, he did not even bother to hide that his goal is to restore the borders of the former Soviet Union which basically means a great part of today's EU. So if the EU cannot keep up and ensure a balance of power with or without the US, they will most likely be subject of invasion as insignificant as they may be.
I used to work with a guy who immigrated to the US from Russia. He said he thought Putin's popularity is a result of the fact that Russians see him as a strong leader, a tough guy. If his career depends on being seen as tough, then being snubbed by Ukraine is intolerable.
In other words, I'm suggesting that the invasion of Ukraine was a political necessity for Putin, not a military necessity for Russia.

The same holds for other resources, whatever the Ukraine has, Russia has still more of it. Population growth? There is so much space in Russia that their population could grow nearly endlessly. Important geostrategic positions? Russia has reached the opposite, it gets more isolated and less important, going the "North Korean" way.
So, since this all does not hinder them to invade into the Ukraine, what should hinder them to invade in the rest of Europe? Or elsewhere? The only thing that I can can see is military strength, indeed.
You are based on an EU server so I had assumed that you were from Europe so you and I are we. The actions of the Soviet Union do not make Russia bad any more than the actions of the Nazis make Germany bad. We do not judge Germany by Hitler but you wish to judge Russia by the USSR. Illogical. After we completely needed the USSR in 1941 - 1945 and they saw us as friends we have spat in their faces and held a cold war against them. I have heard him say the exact opposite. The reason why BRICS is outstripping our alliances is because it is far more liberal and about trade rather than war. Russia does not in any way "rule" BRICS in the way that the US rules NATO so countries want to join. No bribery required. Canada is now threatened with invasion if they do not do what Trump says. Now you are ruled by the new USSR (the EU) and Russia is free to trade with a much larger market they are doing much better than during that time when they were ruled by the USSR and we had free trade etc. They learnt from us but for some inexplicable reason we became like they had been.

Maybe EU is not that important anymore, but NATO is and has been Russia's adversary since its' founding, which basically means that EU will not be the only target. Russia may be NATO's adversary but NATO is not Russia's adversary. Russia has always wanted peace and even asked to join NATO when it was a peace organisation rather than a war organisation. The US has been at war with Russia since Russia did not take orders from them after WWII. Russia has never cared that much about our wars. I see the change for the sake of change / growth at any cost mindset in places where I really shouldn't, thought. Mastodon, for example. It seems like each new release has some new Growth Hack inspired assault. Eugen isn't doing it for exactly the same reasons, but the root is still a mindset that values Growth over every other metric.
We are in an abusive relationship with technology.
So, yes, give it a name. Explain it. Notice it. Be outraged by it.
But also, at every opportunity we have, we have to reject it. (I noted, as I read the original article that I was accosted and asked for my email address twice, the second time while reading a section about how invasive and useless that is)
There are places that the Rot has not yet reached. We must identify them, share them, and embrace them.

When The Rot comes to places that should have been safe, we have to destroy them. Starve them of the users that power them or actually burn them to the ground. If you don't sanitize the area, the Rot will spread.
That means Ubuntu. That means bluesky. That means, in many ways, mastodon as a software platform.
This kind of vigilance is exhausting, and thats the point. Canonical knows that abandoning Ubuntu for Debian will come with a cost, and they're angling that the cost of abandoning Ubuntu is higher than the annoyance youll experience from the advertisements they've shoved in to Apt, or the fact that they partner with Amazon out of the box.
Eugen knows that migrating an instance (or even a single user) off mastodon and on to something else is a big, fragile task. (Hometown exists, and is significantly less GrowthHacky than mastodon, but is a direct migration and mastodon derivative. OTOH, as a mastodon derivative, most of the dev effort has to go in to either improving or undoing what's been done to mainline mastodon.
Account migration exists and works, even to other platforms, but you lose post history (which is a bigger deal for some people than others.)
I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just Effort.)
But there's a beacon of real hope in what I said above, and I'm not sure if you caught it.
When we embrace the free software world, if The Rot does come, we can fight it.
When The Rot comes on Windows, or on Spotify, or on Facebook, we have to either accept that rot or abandon that platform.
When The Rot came for Ubuntu, I had a clear, direct, simple migration path to a platform that was not covered in Rot. The majority of my tools and skills transfer directly. I did not have to make any major changes to my workflow. I had a couple of minor annoyances, I dealt with them, I moved on.
I can (and have planned to for a while, though I haven't actually done it yet) move this fedicerse instance to Hometown without losing anything but a few hours of my day.
There will come a time when the same is true of other platforms and, until then, you can at least preserve your contacts and keep an archive of your posts.
When Plex started tightening the screws, I took my library and left.
Free software is not a silver bullet. It doesn't protect us from The Rot, but it does give us the tools to fight back.
I just woke up so don't have the brain power to respond to this fully other than to say it puts into words what I've been thinking and more.
Funny you should mention Ubuntu, I had made a decision to not use it for years but started using Ubuntu Studio about a month ago. I've been slowly remembering why I stopped using it, and am going to take the opportunity over the holidays to migrate back to something less... that. I saw it as an opportunity to stop distro hopping on the machines I use for work, but it's just been like using an alternate universe Windows.

I don't disagree - with either of you - but I do think that by posing free software as the solution we're saying that commerce can't possibly work in the digital world & that's not great. Commerce is really practical & has served humanity well in myriad ways; just as we must take the physical world back from capitalism to save it, so it must also be with the digital one.
We don't have to take trade out, but we do have to put human beings back in & insist on human-first systems.

But the present is uncomfortable for people because it's where we feel things and come to know them and ourselves for what we are, for both better and worse.
even mundane things are affected. I fill up my car late at night at a 24 hour garage. It has "cloud connected" petrol pumps; which back up to the cloud around 02:00-03:00. Whole lot locks out (including the big pumps for lorries), resets during this process and no fuel can be dispensed.
If you arrive at this time, you end up waiting around (often in the cold and pissing rain) for this process to complete.
I didn't drive in the 90s, but I'm sure this didn't happen back then..

Vous pourriez me dire personne n’est obligé de se coltiner ces supposés nouvelles insipides. Peut-être ? Mais une mauvaise habitude prise de longue date ? Un manque de discernement ? Firearms training for children here in the states would have good results. If we're going to have the second amendment and have firearms available, I think it should be mandatory to educate kids on the when, where, and why to use them -- in addition to what they're used for -- to curb gun violence. Not having a passing grade in high school should limit a lot of things imo
The training is the same for both, so that doesn't matter.
As far as "a lot of armed, dissatisfied young people who will express their anger by taking up arms in the future." It would happen anyway if you have a country that provides no opportunities for youth and lots of guns available, the question will be whether they are untrained idiots with guns or well trained people instead. But lack of proper training has never stopped anyone getting or using a firearm. In fact proper training might make them think twice.
I have had years of firearms training and ran ranges on everything from pistols, rifles, automatic rifles, machine guns, grenades and antitank weapons and qualified marksman on most of those (well not grenades...), but as a result I personally own no firearms at all.
We have the same training issue with gangs here. I would advocate for mandatory firearms training for gang members here. Right now I am appalled at how poor a shot most of them are. We have had incidents where some person in a rival gang is targeted and they fire 50 shots at him and miss him, instead they hit houses, dogs, passers by, cars, kids, garbage cans and so on. Everyone else would be much safer if the gang members spent more time at the range being taught proper handing and shooting skills.

I did firearms training in the air cadets are age 15 on .22 cal rifles. It is a useful skill. I tend to side with Kenny and headrift, better ti train people in safe handling and shooting than let any untrained idiot buy a gun.

I would even support no private gun ownership, as that would make the country much safer, but even so, having firearms training in school is still a good idea, even if only to demystify it.
There are countries like Switzerland and Sweden where much of the population has military training and they have very low gun violence rates. Firearms training does not cause gun violence, in fact I think there is good evidence that it reduces it.
In this case I would guess that it is due to two things: the lack of requirement to demonstrate competency before owning firearms and really bad culture. A good comparison is Switzerland where a large percentage of the population is in the army reserves and keep their military rifles at home. But the number of times people use these for illegal purposes or to settle cores is nearly zero, because it just is not done. They are trained and disciplined. Keep in mind to that the Swiss have centuries of history as mercenaries all over Europe. It is not like they don't know how to apply violence, but unlike in the US the Swiss would never shoot someone for cutting them off in traffic. They don't do school shootings, either. Not part of the culture.

They wanted us to be fit to serve as soldiers.
As a kid, my father gave me both a 16-gague shotgun and a bolt-action .30-30 rifle. He wanted to make a big game hunter of me. I have no idea what happened to those firearms. I haven't had a firearm since I graduated from high school. In my six years in the US Navy, I never so much as touched an actual firearm. That's not to say we didn't have weapons. We had Poseidon missiles and torpedoes, but those belonged to the Weapons Division. We were Engineering. We had a nuclear reactor.
I would be happier, I think, if the US had firearms laws and regulations more like those of the UK.
It would take a lot of time. A lot of people would have to die. I'm using "would" instead of "will" or even "could" because I have basically no hope for our country as it is. My best hope is that we'll die trying... and that the survivors will pull it back together right. @shibao reminds me of a time back when i used to take my car in to a mechanic, i was talking to one who was standing under a lift, and the lift suddenly dropped about 5 inches right over his head. almost got squished cause something was wrong with the hydraulics. he noted the look on my face at the time.
decent lifts have some kind of ratcheting mechanism or mechanical stops that engage in case the hydraulics fail, which does happen sometimes. you never want to get under a hydraulic lift without a backup mechanism because when seals fail, it loses pressure suddenly and drops the load
@shibao btw, with retainer pins, rods etc it's generally not possible to bump something and release it. they're all designed that you can't accidentally knock pins out by bumping them.
i always give the vehicle a good shake and lean and push on it before getting under it to be sure it's secure

I am of the opinion that the manufacturer is suffering from a case of bruised ego. Not only did MiM fix the device when he was told he wouldn't be able to, he also revealed that the design was essentially pedestrian. On a piece that expensive, its a huge blow.
@Whiskeyomega I don't know much about high-end audio equipment, but I've built a fair number of kits and repaired my own stuff, and the components inside that pre-amp seemed like off-the-shelf stuff. The construction quality seemed about what I would expect from a consumer-grade kit from someone like Dayton Audio. Just my opinion. YMMV.

Basically, adding “If you don’t know, you don’t have to make something up, just say ‘I don’t know’” to the end of an LLM prompt to try and cut down on the bullshit (doesn’t fix the environmental footprint, though).
Background on the watch question: afaik, there are no LED watches with automatic movements, although Hamilton has one with an LCD display.
