Today in #Luxembourg, a union of municipal employees comes out against free public services.

At least, that is what their fancy headline says, they seem in fact to be complaining that municipalities' budgets are not sufficient to finance free public services. Which is a totally different thing.

Still, they use the rhetoric of "nothing free is actually free". Do these municipal employees not understand what public services are?

It's that kind of a feed today I was motivated to just take resistance garden pics on morning chores.

Caught a lemon flower in a beam of sun.

One of the greenhouses getting wildly green.

Had raspberry overtake the latest raised bed of a previous years asparagus seed starts. Already ate from an established bed. Exposed these guys to find they were delayed by competition but healthy as!

Humble and hardy radish sprouts. Be mighty like radish!

I went to the USPS early yesterday morning to use the self-service kiosk, but the printer was out of order.

I went back today, with a literal wagon full of boxes. Let everyone else go ahead of me. Settled in, and printed a ton of shipping labels.

Then some little old lady asked for help. Got her settled into the best box, and someone else asked for help. Then people started asking me where their packages were and when stuff would arrive.

I don't work at the post office!

A protein called YTHDF2 activates genes that provide a stable energy source for cancer cell growth and spread.

It also helps cancer cells hide from the immune system by reducing antigen biomarkers that would otherwise signal the immune system to attack.

researchers developed a drug compound called CCI-38 that specifically targets and inhibits this protein. The treatment is expected to increase the chances of successful treatment and long-term survival.

Dear Government,

Since November 5th, all the way through December 16th, for more than a month, you told everyone you did NOT know what was going on. Now, you claim it was all harmless private drones this whole time.

I work for Meta, I see thousands upon thousands of posts every hour, and let tell you, no one believe you.

Good afternoon everyone. There has been a lot of confusion about "subscriptions" to FA. I hope this doesn't add to the confusion, but I have to say that we are committed to being a not-for-profit, voluntarily funded site. We need about another $110 per month in pledges and then we can exist forever, but if we cannot reach this extremely modest goal by January 20th, then we have no choice but to close down the site. Subscriptions are gratefully accepted at givesendgo.com/FreeAtlantis. Thank You!

A great conversation in the supporter Discord/Matrix reminded me that it's about time to share this fantastic item by @heydon.

Anyway, yes HTML is a programming language and folks who argue with this statement in my comments will be muted, blocked, defederated, or all three.

WATCH: House Ethics Committee Chairman Michael Guest Refuses to Answer TGP’s Questions on Gaetz Report, Democrat Ethics Committee Leaker – Won’t Even Say What Ethics Means

thegatewaypundit.com/2024/12/w…

Kyle Becker

Speaker Johnson's 1,547-page spending monstrosity has a little gift to Pelosi's Partisan J6 Committee.

Buried way down in section 605 is a passage that would shield House members from independent investigators.
"MOTIONS TO QUASH OR MODIFY—Upon a motion made promptly by a House office or provider for a House office, a court of competent jurisdiction shall quash or modify any legal process directed to the provider for a House office if compliance with the legal process would require the disclosure of House data of the House office."

What does this mean in plain English?

If someone (like a House office or a service provider working for a House office) believes a legal request for information (such as a subpoena) would force them to disclose sensitive House data, they can quickly file a motion with a court to stop or change the request.

The court must agree to block or change the request if it would result in the disclosure of the House’s sensitive data.

In essence, this ensures House offices' data remains protected, and provides a way to challenge legal requests for that data.

This could be used to shield J6 committee members accused of deleting records and may be criminally prosecuted under the Trump administration. #cr @kylenabecker minds.com/newsfeed/17161974207…

some reply-guys who want to prove you wrong will still reply without making an attempt. instead, they'll tell you to explain your reasoning in more detail, and that's it. they don't present any actual counterarguments, they just kind of demand that you explain yourself in greater depth.

and it's always for the same reason. they want to prove you wrong—but they can't. there's no angle, because you're actually making perfect sense. so they need you to talk a lot more, and then maybe you'll eventually give them something by accident that they can attack.

and if you do, then they'll argue against that thing and act like your whole point is false, even if that point is absolutely inconsequential in reality.

out of all the kinds of reply-guys, I think these ones are among the most embarrassing.

It reminds me of the "Press" action in the Ace Attorney series. Which is to say "I have no actual idea of what you're wrong about but I've decided you're wrong so please keep talking until I can point something out"

It's weird to think of seeing interactions with others as being adversarial like that. Going into a conversation with the preconceived notion that there's a hidden flaw you should exploit.

in reply to evacide

when I explain to SWEs various release engineering best practices, there are always one or two who interpret my statements, which are not hypotheses, as if I was presenting a challenge for them to come up with a solution that successfully violates best practices. Or, they react by questioning them and asking for proofs.

I am sure the same is true in the infosec space.

I am also sure that Mastodon has a higher proportion of these individuals than does most social media.

tl'dr, I agree
