“Trump Is Unlikely To Pull All US Troops Out Of Central Europe Or Abandon NATO’s Article 5”, but he’s definitely “Pivoting (back) to Asia” in order to more muscularly contain China, which will have consequences for European security. Although Russia has no intent to attack NATO countries, many of these same countries sincerely fear that it does, which leads to them formulating policy appropriately. This (false) threat perception heightens their concerns about the US’ gradual disengagement from NATO.

To make matters worse, Reuters cited five unnamed sources to report that the US chided the EU for its military-industrial plans, particularly those which relate to production and procurement within the bloc. They’re presumably connected to European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen’s “ReArm Europe Plan” that calls for members to boost defense spending by 1.5% on average for a collective €650 billion more in the next four years and provide €150 billion worth of loans for defense investments.

This bold program will strengthen the EU’s strategic autonomy but will likely come at the cost of accelerating the US’ disengagement from NATO. EU-produced equipment might not be interoperable with American equipment, which could complicate contingency planning. The bloc wants the US to intervene in the event of a military crisis with Russia, yet the US might think twice if its commanders can’t easily take control of European forces in that event.

The US might also be less likely to do so if the EU reduces its reliance on American equipment like the F-35s that are rumored to have “kill-switches”. These could hypothetically be activated if the EU tried provoking a conflict with Russia that the US didn’t approve of for whatever reason. If the EU becomes emboldened to do precisely that and thus becomes a major strategic liability for the US, then the odds of the US intervening in its support would dwindle, thus leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy.

At the same time, some countries like the Baltic States, Poland, and Romania – which occupy NATO’s strategic eastern flank with Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine and are much more pro-American than their Western European counterparts – will likely remain within the US’ military-industrial ecosystem. This could therefore serve to retain American influence along the EU’s periphery, keep those countries out of the bloc’s military-industrial ecosystem, and thus hamstring plans for a “European Army”.

Nevertheless, the US would also do well to share some defense technology with Poland and agree to at least partial domestic production of its large-scale purchases, which could transplant a portion of the American military-industrial ecosystem to Europe for easier export to other countries. That could in turn keep Poland from pivoting to France or at least relying more on it to balance the US like the ruling liberal-globalist coalition might do if its candidate wins the presidency during the next elections in May.

Apple's encryption row with UK should not be secret, court rules

A judge has sided with a coalition of civil liberties groups and news organisations - including the BBC - and ruled a legal row between the UK government and Apple over data privacy cannot be held in secret.

The Home Office wants the right to be able access information secured by Apple's Advanced Data Protection (ADP) system, citing powers given to it under the Investigatory Powers Act.

A Call Issued by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine

We call for the broadest participation tomorrow, Monday, in the Day of Rage and Civil Disobedience against Genocide and Zionist Crimes.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine urgently appeals to our people in the West Bank, Al-Quds, the occupied interior, the diaspora camps, and Palestinian and Arab communities abroad, as well as to our Arab brothers and the free people of the world, to join tomorrow, Monday, in the Global Day of Popular Anger and Comprehensive Civil Disobedience. This day should mark the beginning of a worldwide popular movement across all arenas to press for an end to the zionist genocide against our people in Gaza, which is escalating day by day in partnership with American support and international collusion.

The mass participation on this global day will send a resounding message: that the widespread collective popular action will not cease until the aggression is halted, the crossings are opened, and the siege on Gaza is lifted, in rejection of the systematic starvation policy that has affected children, women, and the elderly.

It is time for immediate action to show that the Palestinian people, our fellow members of the nation, and the free people of the world will not accept this reality, and that collusion and complacency cannot be tolerated.

We stress the need for Palestinian and Arab communities abroad to be at the forefront of this movement by organizing protest events in front of the zionist and American embassies, as well as the headquarters of the United Nations and the European Union. This is to deliver our message to the entire world: the Palestinian people will not be left alone in facing genocide.

We also call for demonstrations in the streets and public squares, and for universities and trade unions to be activated as platforms of solidarity with Gaza. We must pressure international powers and institutions to stop the massacres and deliver justice for our people. This comprehensive civil disobedience is a clear collective step to show the occupation and the Americans that we will not remain silent in the face of continued genocide, starvation, and siege, and that we will persist in our struggle until the genocide stops.

We send our greetings to the steadfast sons and daughters of our people in Gaza, and we affirm that our people, wherever they may be, are partners in this battle. We also extend our deep appreciation to all the groups and organizations that initiated and contributed to the preparation for this Global Day of Popular Rage. Their efforts represent an important starting point for a continuous popular surge that reflects the unity of the Palestinian people and their solidarity with Gaza, while exerting effective pressure on the occupation and the international community to achieve justice and halt the massacre.

We emphasize the necessity of raising and hanging Palestinian flags everywhere, alongside the names of the martyrs of genocide—children, women, and the elderly—so that they serve as a testimony to the crimes of the occupation, strengthen the voice of resistance, and make the entire world witness to the atrocities of the zionist occupation.

"So, maybe the real question is not how I fell for the love-bombing, but why it felt so natural. And what does that feeling of normality say about me, a young millennial pushing 30, and the world I inhabit – that such behaviour no longer feels like the exception, but the rule?"

This is exactly the same in Europe. We'll soon only have a generation of morons who can't read, can't write, can't compute, and can't think. That's how civilisations end.

Most of our students are functionally illiterate. This is not a joke. By “functionally illiterate” I mean “unable to read and comprehend adult novels by people like Barbara Kingsolver, Colson Whitehead, and Richard Powers.” I picked those three authors because they are all recent Pulitzer Prize winners, an objective standard of “serious adult novel.”

Their writing skills are at the 8th-grade level. Spelling is atrocious, grammar is random, and the correct use of apostrophes is cause for celebration. Worse is the resistance to original thought. What I mean is the reflexive submission of the cheapest cliché as novel insight.

I can’t assign papers any more because I’ll just get AI back, and there’s nothing I can do to make it stop. Sadly, not writing exacerbates their illiteracy; writing is a muscle and dedicated writing is a workout for the mind as well as the pen.

I’m less informed to speak out on this one, but my math prof friends tell me that their students are increasingly less capable and less willing to put in the effort. As a result they have had to make their tests easier with fewer hard problems. When I was a first semester freshman (at a private SLAC, yes, but it wasn’t CalTech) I took Calculus 1. Second semester I took Calculus 2. I don’t think pre-calculus was even a thing back then. Now apparently pre-calc counts as an advanced content course. My psych prof friends who teach statistics have similarly lamented having to water down the content over time.

Things have changed. Ted Gioia describes modern students as checked-out, phone-addicted zombies. Troy Jollimore writes, “I once believed my students and I were in this together, engaged in a shared intellectual pursuit. That faith has been obliterated over the past few semesters.” Faculty have seen a stunning level of disconnection.

It’s the phones, stupid. They are absolutely addicted to their phones. When I go work out at the Campus Rec Center, easily half of the students there are just sitting on the machines scrolling on their phones. I was talking with a retired faculty member at the Rec this morning who works out all the time. He said he has done six sets waiting for a student to put down their phone and get off the machine he wanted. The students can’t get off their phones for an hour to do a voluntary activity they chose for fun. Sometimes I’m amazed they ever leave their goon caves at all.

There are lots of #plugins/services that allow you to sync your #browser saved website #credentials across multiple devices; even #sync between ecosystems (chrome/google account <--> Microsoft acc).

But - leaving aside "password sharing is Baaaad" and "probably violates a TOS somewhere" issues - does anyone know of a plugin/service that allows you to share a saved login with a trusted other?

e.g. share an newspaper #subscription account with a partner _without_ a shared google account.

in reply to Third spruce tree on the left

Bitwarden has a credential sharing feature. Can't remember if it requires the $10/ year subscription though.

1Password has the feature too (but 1Password is closed source).

KeePassXC allows you to share credentials.

keepassxc.org/docs/KeePassXC_U…

in reply to Third spruce tree on the left

Like what I would like to do is share that newspaper subscription login w/ a partner (we pay for it) - so easy, just email txt it to them. But if one of us changes the pwd, it falls out of sync and the other has to change the saved pwd in THEIR browsers/devices. Again, easy enough to remedy, but a pain.

Again, only suggesting this for individual p2p sharing amongst trusted peoples and not for any circumvention of anything.

My chocolate TERFfle making experiments continue. I tried a different, much more expensive freeze-dried raspberry powder and WOW is it a game-changer. The stuff I used before was inadequate, I had to combine it with fresh-frozen raspberries I juiced myself. But the Koyah can be used all by itself, which makes everything much easier. 2x more expensive but 10x more delicious, so totally worth it. (No I am not being paid for product reviews, I just don't have a lot going on in my life so exceptional cooking toys and products excite me.)

@stephagainWhat are pralin chocolates? You mean a hazelnut ganache? Sometimes praline in the US means a kind of pecan caramel. regardless, I am making neither.

My TERFfles come in the following flavors:

Saffron (in white chocolate ganache, dark chocolate coating)
C3 (Cardamom, Cinnamon and Cayenne in dark chocolate ganache, milk chocolate coating)
Raspberry (in white chocolate ganache, dark chocolate coating)

And I just made a batch like raspberry but with passionfruit, for my sister who is visiting soon. She is fond of passionfruit.

You cannot create a corruption free government. All of history has proven this thoroughly and repeatedly.

The problem is actually rooted in legitimizing the state as the collectivized, monopoly provider of justice and security. That power is not--and never will--be used as intended. Instead it is sold to the highest bidder to write the legislation to favor them.

Expect greed and corruption. They are immutable facts of life. They will never be eliminated. They will never be effectively banned. They are inherent to human nature. Some of us are better at containing them than others, but they are always there. Those who become the most wealthy or powerful likely got there by being more greedy and/or by being better at being corrupt. That points directly at _both_ the Fortune 500 _and_ at politicians.

Well....

Dear Elon,

Can't speak of others, but I hate you because you're a narcissistic evil man-child that would rather use your money to cause harm than to use it for good.

That, and you completely disowned your trans daughter. What kind of parent *does that?*

Also, you're a fucking Nazi.
