Went to #unlock my #LinuxMint 22.1 workstation this morning only to discover I couldn't.

As soon as I turned on my #monitor, my #keyboard and #mouse lit up (they're plugged-in to my monitor) but neither of them were recognized. Couldn't even press [Caps Lock] to toggle the LED on the keyboard.

Lights were on, but nobody was home.

Ended up having to #SSH into my workstation and kill my entire #Cinnamon session just so I could #login.

Extremely frustrating because it also meant I lost any of my unsaved work. Gah!

Update on Casey Goonan’s Case


Update from the Casey Support Committee as of 4/8/25

Sentencing hearing postponed and more evidence entered into discovery

Casey’s sentencing has been rescheduled to June 10th, 1 pm, at the Oakland federal courthouse. We will be mobilizing court support again for this hearing so stay tuned for confirmation and guidelines a few weeks before that date. We hope it won’t be rescheduled yet again but know that is a possibility. Also of note is that since the plea deal the US Attorney has entered substantial new material into evidence consisting of a large amount of phone call audio and copies of correspondence between Casey and supporters obtained via the jail’s monitoring of communications. This is concerning, but let it serve as a reminder that all comms into jails and prisons are actively monitored and that it is incumbent upon everyone to maintain responsible communication habits.

Rescheduling the sentencing hearing also means there is more time to people who know Casey personally to send the lawyers letters of character to file with the judge. If you want the guidelines and details, hit us up at cscommittee@proton.me.

Health and well being

As you probably know Casey has had a very difficult year health wise, but has been doing better physically in the last month even though they have repeatedly gotten sick from their food. As a result they have been spending a lot of time in bed, and haven’t been up for doing much letter writing lately. Letters are always appreciated but correspondence is also challenging due to 2-4 week delays in receiving mail. The emotional toll of the sentencing date being moved and continuing to be in the limbo of Santa Rita is taking a toll on their sleep and mental health. But they are doing their best to stay on top of their program and keep their energy and spirits up.

so either we'll have to capitulate, drop the china tariffs, and hang our heads in shame, or most products will be more than 2x more expensive for a long time. it's hard to overstate the economic impact of this on poor people. you can't make up for this with a tax cut, because those people don't pay much tax anyway.

Il ne s’agit pas d’un coup de bluff, mais d’une politique réfléchie en amont qui vise à réduire le déficit commercial des États-Unis. L’objectif affiché est de réindustrialiser le pays en vue de créer des emplois, mais aussi de renforcer la sécurité nationale en se dotant d’un appareil industriel de défense autonome et performant.

Une telle stratégie protectionniste, bien que sensée sur le fond, devrait être menée avec mesure, prudence, et de façon bien plus coopérative. Il est toutefois possible que de nombreux accords bilatéraux soient signés, réduisant rapidement les taux élevés imposés le 2 avril, qui n’auraient donc été, pour un certain nombre de pays, qu’un brutal coup de pression temporaire pour les faire céder. Cela nécessitera cependant des concessions non seulement économiques, mais aussi politiques, que de nombreux pays ne vont pas apprécier, voire refuser. Quoiqu’il en soit, c’est une étape décisive du passage à un monde multipolaire.

En attendant, ce violent retour à une politique protectionniste est bien parti pour avoir des effets dévastateurs, aux États-Unis comme dans beaucoup de pays du monde. Leur étendue dépendra des décisions politiques de rétorsion que vont prendre les dirigeants mondiaux. Il est impossible de savoir à ce stade si Trump gagnera ou pas son pari de réindustrialisation.

La situation s’annonce particulièrement critique pour les dirigeants européens, divisés comme d’habitude : ils disposent de bien peu de cartes en main pour négocier, mais de beaucoup trop d’arrogance. Trump ayant encore de nombreuses armes à sa disposition, un conflit avec lui pourrait s’avérer encore plus dommageable pour nos économies.

The next time they want to toss the "But the polio vaccine saved many lives" let them know that from 1929 to 1952 the rate of Polio was in the decline because personal hygiene and better sewage and water safety practices were taking place in major cities. Yes there were many flair ups but they were becoming increasingly less and less each year. The vaccine only helped stabilize the populace but in reality better food and sanitation practices were being implemented which is the REAL REASON we no longer have polio in this country. Don't believe me? Afghanistan and Pakistan have been vaccinating their people for over 40 years and polio is still the #1 killer of children in these 2 countries. Why would this be? Because their health and sanitation infrastructure sucks to high heaven maybe? You can't vaccinate your way out of this problem until your people can drink clean water and human/animal poop isn't everywhere. Basically it's proof positive that the polio vaccine doesn't work but a proper diet, good hygiene and working sanitation does.

So since the polio vaccine has been proven to be a joke, I'm starting to wonder what else doesn't really work.

Mais soyons honnêtes, du strict point de vue judiciaire, l’ampleur du détournement – 4 millions d’euros – et l’attitude des prévenus qui ont nié leur responsabilité pendant toute la durée de la procédure, n’incitaient pas à la clémence. Ne pas appliquer la peine d’inéligibilité aurait tout eu du traitement de faveur qu’on refuse aux citoyens ordinaires, une sorte de privilège de noblesse lié au statut particulier de Marine Le Pen.

Talking with my Dad today about traveling to the US, he told me a story about another Canadian (two degrees of separation, a colleague of someone I know well). She works in finance in New York City. She recently went back to Canada for a short visit, and then when she tried to return, US immigration decided not to let her back in. That's it. No way to appeal. Now she has an apartment and job in NYC, but is working from Canada, and the company lawyers say there's nothing they can do.

I really cannot imagine traveling to the US at this point.

Le plan de Trump et des spéculateurs de Wall Street ne se passe pas comme prévu

En temps normal, quand il y a des turbulences sur les marchés, le dollar et l’or sont considérés comme des valeurs refuge. C’est-à-dire que les investisseurs se tournent vers eux pour se protéger de l’instabilité.

Prenons le cas du dollar : dans un contexte incertain, les investisseurs préfèrent acheter des dollars pour ne pas être exposés à des monnaies plus faibles, plus volatiles, ou plus risquées. Donc le cours du dollar monte par rapport aux autres devises.

En parallèle, quand les marchés sentent qu’une récession approche, ils anticipent que la Fed (la banque centrale américaine) va baisser ses taux d’intérêt pour relancer l’économie. Car quand les taux baissent, emprunter coûte moins cher, et cela peut stimuler l’activité.

Il faut comprendre que la Fed maîtrise complètement les taux à très court terme, mais pas les taux longs, comme ceux à 10 ou 30 ans. Ces derniers sont décidés par le marché, en fonction de l’offre et de la demande. Toutefois, quand la Fed baisse les taux courts, cela pousse souvent aussi les taux longs à baisser.

Depuis 2008, la Fed est même intervenue plus directement : elle rachète des obligations d’État américaines pour faire baisser les taux. C’est ce qu’on appelle le Quantitative Easing – un nom savant pour dire que la Fed crée d’énormes quantités de dollars pour acheter la dette publique des États-Unis.

Ce scénario (turbulence sur les marchés, baisse des taux par la Fed, achats massifs d’obligations) a été anticipé par les investisseurs, et sûrement même par Trump qui a initié ces turbulences par la guerre commerciale lancée contre les partenaires commerciaux des États-Unis.

Au début, tout s’est passé comme prévu. Mais ensuite, les taux longs américains sont remontés violemment, ce qui a contredit les paris faits par les conseillers de Trump et les spéculateurs (dont Howard Lutnick de Cantor/BGC est les 2 à la fois). Et ces paris des spéculateurs portaient sur un sujet extrêmement sensible : la dette publique des États-Unis.

Pourquoi ce retournement ? Voici quelques éléments de réponse :

Cette fois, les dirigeants américains sont perçus comme imprévisibles. Les marchés ont peur. Acheter des dollars devient moins attrayant.

Qui a envie d’acheter des obligations américaines à long terme quand on a à faire à un président orgueilleux, agressif, qui se comporte en bully vis-à-vis du reste du monde ?

Trump est tellement instable que, désormais, la probabilité qu’il annonce un jour à la Chine, au Japon ou aux pays du Golfe qu’ils ne seront pas remboursés n’est plus considérée comme nulle.

Et justement, la Chine, attaquée frontalement par Trump, a vraisemblablement commencé à vendre ses obligations américaines, comme l’a fait la Russie il y a une dizaine d’années. Or, quand un acteur vend massivement des obligations, leur prix baisse, et les taux d’emprunt à 10 ou 30 ans montent mécaniquement.

Enfin, il faut ajouter que beaucoup d’investisseurs avaient spéculé sur la dette américaine via une stratégie appelée basis trade, avec des effets de levier allant jusqu’à 200. Aujourd’hui, ils subissent des appels de marge, c’est-à-dire qu’ils sont obligés de remettre de l’argent sur la table ou de liquider leurs positions à perte.

Et surtout, un problème structurel émerge : si les taux ne baissent pas rapidement, les États-Unis sont exposés. Car le pays accumule un déficit budgétaire gigantesque, une dette publique colossale, qu’il faut sans cesse refinancer. Cela signifie emprunter à nouveau pour rembourser les échéances précédentes. Si les taux restent élevés, le coût du refinancement devient très lourd à supporter.

Conclusion : rien ne se déroule comme prévu, ni pour Trump, ni pour les spéculateurs de Wall Street.

Le monde semble moins impressionné par les États-Unis, et le dollar perd progressivement son statut de valeur refuge. Cette situation inédite introduit une incertitude profonde, et les marchés redoutent l’incertitude.

Mais au-delà de cette conjoncture, il faut comprendre une chose : dans une économie fondée sur l’usure, on peut toujours repousser les problèmes à plus tard, via la dette ou l’impression monétaire. Mais cela a un coût : rendre le système plus complexe, plus fragile, et faire en sorte que l’ajustement final, s’il arrive, soit d’autant plus brutal. Tant qu’on ne sort pas de cette logique, chaque crise risque d’être plus violente que la précédente.
