Harvard University has rejected various demands of a presidential commission on anti-Semitism.

The task force wants to persuade Harvard to ensure Jewish students on its campus are no longer harassed, or else lose its federal funding.

Harvard retorts that it won’t be bullied by Washington.

Among its other requirements, the Trump administration also warned Harvard to cease using race as a criterion in its admissions, hiring, and promotion, contrary to law.

And it also directed the campus to ban the use of masks that, in the post-COVID era of protests, have emboldened violent demonstrators with anonymity.

The administration’s order to stop race-based bias was in accordance with civil rights statutes, and a recent Supreme Court decision specifically banning affirmative action at Harvard and elsewhere.

No matter. Harvard claimed that the Trump administration infringed upon its First Amendment rights.

So, it has temporarily rejected the administration’s orders. At least for now, Harvard has lost its annual $2.2 billion grant of federal funds.

...also debugged my first C++ program today. Turns out the code block encoded all of the ampersands with "ampersand encoding" (&), so all of those needed to be fixed before it'd compile.

gcc/g++ has spoiled me because visual studio is so fucking obtuse for compiling the fucking code.

@gme I know with my VMs I have a cron.weekly task that runs export DEBIAN_FRONTEND=noninteractive; apt-get update; apt-get-y dist-upgrade uses logger to write to the logs when the updates are done, then reboots, but that's because I like to keep my boxes up to date.

Wired: Teachers using tools to figure out how many of their new students are bots who are just there to submit enough AI-completed assignments that they can claim financial aid in someone else's name.

This story from the Voice of San Diego is worth a read:

"When the spring semester began, Southwestern College professor Elizabeth Smith felt good. Two of her online classes were completely full, boasting 32 students each. Even the classes’ waitlists, which fit 20 students, were maxed out. That had never happened before. "

"By the end of the first two weeks of the semester, Smith had whittled down the 104 students enrolled in her classes, including those on the waitlist, to just 15. The rest, she’d concluded, were fake students, often referred to as bots."

"The bots’ goal is to bilk state and federal financial aid money by enrolling in classes, and remaining enrolled in them, long enough for aid disbursements to go out. They often accomplish this by submitting AI-generated work. And because community colleges accept all applicants, they’ve been almost exclusively impacted by the fraud."

"That has put teachers on the front lines of an ever-evolving war on fraud, muddied the teaching experience and thrown up significant barriers to students’ ability to access courses. Le #NYT avait déjà enquêté par le passé sur le rôle secret des #USA, de la #CIA en particulier, en Ukraine, lors de la guerre du #Donbass, c'est-à-dire avant l'invasion russe.
J'avais donné ici même un résumé en français de cette enquête. Fin mars, le journal américain a sorti une nouvelle enquête. Elle porte cette fois sur le rôle secret des USA depuis l'invasion russe de 2022 (ou, du moins, une partie de ce rôle secret). J'en donne ci-dessous, à nouveau, une brève synthèse en français.

Peu après l'invasion russe de février 2022, Washington décide de coordonner la guerre en Ukraine depuis ses bases en #Europe, dans le cadre de l' #OTAN. C'est ainsi que des généraux ukrainiens sont conviés à #Wiesbaden, en #Allemagne. C'est le quartier général américain pour les opérations militaires en Europe et en Afrique. Un partenariat est scellé.

Pour coordonner cette alliance : un général ukrainien, #Zabrodskyi (photo de droite), et un général américain, #Donahue (photo de gauche). Sous Donahue s'organise un état-major de l'OTAN, avec un général polonais comme adjoint, un général britannique affecté à la logistique et un général canadien commis à la formation des unités ukrainiennes. Les différents services de renseignement américains intègrent ce commandement. De leur côté, les Ukrainiens implantent à Wiesbaden près d'une vingtaine d'officiers d'état-major. La guerre sera donc dirigée depuis l'Allemagne par un quartier général conjoint.

Le mode de fonctionnement est le suivant. Les Américains recueillent du renseignement sur les Russes, par leurs espions, par leurs satellites, par leurs écoutes des communications... Ce renseignement leur permet de désigner des cibles à frapper sur le terrain. Ils livrent aux Ukrainiens des armements aptes à cette mission : des drones navals, de l'artillerie, des lance-roquettes à longue portée... Et les Ukrainiens détruisent les cibles russes désignées par les Américains.

Quelques exemples. Le navire amiral de la flotte russe de la mer Noire, le #Moskva, coulé en pleine mer ; le commandement de la redoutable 58e armée russe décapité par une frappe sur l'état-major ; la base navale de Sébastopol ciblée, grâce au travail de la CIA, par des drones qui endommagent plusieurs navires et contraignent les Russes à se replier sur un port plus éloigné (les USA avaient fourni à cet effet à l'Ukraine le prototype d'un drone destiné à s'opposer, dans le futur, à une invasion chinoise à Taïwan).

Le 'New York Times' conclut que l'action américaine dans la guerre en Ukraine s'inscrit dans la longue suite de confrontations avec Moscou par pays interposés, comme les conflits du Vietnam et d'Afghanistan ; et que cette guerre est d'un grand intérêt pour les USA car elle leur permet de valider, ou pas, les tactiques et les armements en usage, et de tirer d'utiles leçons en vue des conflits du futur. En cela, le journal new-yorkais apporte de l'eau au moulin de Moscou qui considère que le conflit n'est pas une guerre entre la Russie et l'Ukraine mais entre la #Russie et l' #OTAN, l'Ukraine faisant office de ce qu'on appelle aujourd'hui un proxy, c'est-à-dire un intermédiaire au service des USA.

Since we're speaking of #llm I will be forever mad about the fact that they became the widespread answer to some issues with no proper/accessible/known alternatives.

When I was looking for more diverse illustrations for npcs in my campaign, I was frustrated to notice that a lot of some archetypes were ai-gen. Fat *human* women*? Black *human* characters in fantasy settings? Fat AND black character? Ugly characters? Without having them sexualised or made monstrous? It is so much harder to find when you remove ai-gen...
