Balikatan 2025 turns Philippines into launchpad for US warâNDFP
April 21, 2025
The National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) denounced this yearâs Balikatan military exercises as a dangerous escalation of US military intervention in the country, warning that the drills are transforming the Philippines into a staging ground for regional war.
With more than 14,000 US and Philippine troops participating in operations spanning Luzon, Palawan, and areas near Taiwan, the NDFP said Balikatan 2025 goes far beyond routine training. At the center of this yearâs exercises is the US Marine Corpsâ Marine Littoral Regiment (MLR), a rapid deployment force designed for island-hopping warfare aimed at confronting China in the South China Sea.
âThis is no longer a joint training exerciseâit is full-spectrum preparation for war,â the NDFP said in a statement. âContrary to US claims, this war machine does not defendâit consumes. And it is using the Filipino people as its fuel.â
The group warned that new weapons systems being field-tested in the countryâsuch as the NMESIS coastal missile platformâsignal a shift toward a âfirst-strike postureâ that threatens to draw the Philippines into a conflict between major powers. The presence of these weapons, the NDFP said, turns the archipelago into a launchpad for US military provocations, increasing the risk of retaliatory strikes from China.
âThe cost of these war games will not be paid by Washington, but by Filipino communities who may find themselves in the crossfire,â the statement said.
The NDFP also criticized the use of Humanitarian Civic Assistance (HCA) programs, saying these are being used to normalize the US military presence while enabling the construction of infrastructure and the prepositioning of supplies within Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites. These same areas, the group noted, are also experiencing intensified militarization and operations targeting peasant and indigenous communities.
âUnder the guise of development, the US is embedding itself deeper into our territory and aiding in counterinsurgency operations against the Filipino people,â the NDFP said.
The group condemned the Marcos Jr. administration for expanding US military access to Philippine territory, likening his actions to those of his father, who allowed the presence of US military bases during his fascist dictatorship.
âBy opening more EDCA sites and giving the US military broader access, Marcos Jr. has surrendered more of our land and seas to foreign control,â the statement read.
âThe peopleâs armed resistance remains the most effective means to assert national sovereignty and genuine democracy in the face of imperialist aggression and local tyranny,â the NDFP concluded.
This yearâs iteration of the Balikatan however has morphed into a full-blown machinery of war staging, with the Philippines increasingly shackled to the gears of US-led aggression against its imperialist rival China.

When I learned about the holocaust as teenager in Germany, many people from the Nazi era were still alive and lived all around me. Being the curious person I always was, I asked them about what happened and their role in it.
"I didn't know" was the boilerplate answer. And as they were relatives and friends, I believed them at first.
Then in 1981 we got a new teacher for history and he exposed the lie. Or more precise: he got us exposing those lies.
We started out in school by analysing the murder of Friedrich Schumm on April 1st 1933. He was a jewish lawyer born in #Kiel and where his parents still lived. On the day of a visit at home due to the marriage of his little sister, the SS was enforcing a boycott of the shop his father was operating.
He wanted to the enter the shop of his father but was hindered by the SS picket. A short fight ensued, a shot rang out and a man from the SS was seriously injured. Schumm fled, presented himself at a police station and was arrested.
Later that day, a lynch mob compromised of members of the SA/SS formed. The ransacked the shop of his father and with the help of Nazi politicians they entered the prison and his cell. They shot him 30 times.
This didn't happen in secret. We went to the archive of the local newspaper and got articles about the event from back then. And it was all in there. The newspaper (which still exists today) stumbled over his own feet in order to justify the lynching. I couldn't believe what I was reading: "We strongly condemn any lynching but this case was clearly justified". The newspaper argued against any prosecution of the lynch mob. They said that "gesundes Volksempfinden" (healthy popular sentiment) made the event inevitable.
It was a huge story back then that dominated the news for quite so time. It was not hidden on the second page, but the top news of the month. There were quotes from local Nazi politicians who claimed to be proud of the deed. All was there in broad daylight. The SS wasn't even attempting to hide it.
There was a game named Detention (and later film adoption) with background in the white terror period in Taiwan (when Kuomintang declared marcial law and limited freedom of speech of citizens with the army). There was this one line I have never been able to forgot: "Did you forgot, or are you too terrified to remember?"

when I was a kid, my mother had photos of male relatives in German uniforms, and all the stories ended with "and that was before the war". Absolutely zilch on during or immediately after. It just didn't exist. What did they do during the war? No idea. Why? No idea. They were just men who got photos taken in these outfits and that was it. It was odd to me, to remember these people in uniform but have no rememberance of what happened while they wore them.
From what I learned, the Death Camp in Weimar got a rail connections quite late. So the people arrived at the main station, which must have been impossible to be ignorant about.

Thank you for sharing this! I wish we would have had a teacher like this. I don't think this lie was actually questioned at my school. If a teacher says this in school and some people say this in a documentary, it must be somewhat true, at least that was my belief at the time. And it's not like this was talked about in my family a lot. WW2 in general? Of course. But personal involvement? My grandfather had a war injury, that wasn't really a thing one could hide, but by the time I was at an age where we talked about this stuff at school, many of my grandparents were dead or we weren't seeing them often anymore due to a divorce.
Of course by now I know it was a lie and more and more historians mention it, articles are being published etc. but there aren't really many people you can ask anymore nowadays, unlike when I was young. @Martin Seeger way back in the early 80s when i learned about the nazis at school i asked my grandmother about the concentration camps. her reply to such questions was that nobody had known anything. these camps were a secret and nobody could know about it. then some time later i asked her that everybody should have seen how their neighbours were deported, noticed who vanished and who was dragged away in public. why didn't anybody object? her answer to this was, that opposing this had been far too dangerous, you could have been sent to a concentration camp for interfering. she strictly refused to admit this contradiction. and i didn't insist. i loved her very much, she was a compassionate woman, very helpful but also very tough. she wouldn't change her answer. since then the problem was clear to me: everbody had known and everybody had chosen not to know.
Human history is littered with variations on that, also: "I was only obeying orders" "If I didn't do it I/a relative would have been killed" "Better them than me" amongst other mendacious excuses for cowardice.
The truly courageous, who were so radical they merely distributed leaflets, perished on the Fallbeilen*, used so often they had to redesign the things for rapid killing, even having back of a truck versions.
Those who did act usually ended up hanged with piano wire, often in the same death rooms as the fallbeil.
In either case, they spent some time with the Geheime Staatspolizei.
The "useful" Nazis escaped the rope / blade / bullet and got new identities in the west, usually the USA.
"Wir haben es nicht gewuĂt" was a common joking statement made about the Germans from WWII here in the neighbouring country (the Netherlands) in my childhood. So it was a well known fact that the Germans were in denial about what happened. Partly probably because denazification in the west was so mild and people didn't want everyone to be held accountable for their actions. We need a reckoning with people who follow actively or meekly these ideologies, not some kind of media spectacle, but true recompense and reconciliation, lest we tread in their footsteps again (like with Gaza).

Here in Germany, about 15% of people nowadays say they would have done something against it if they had lived in the 3rd Reich. Me, too, but even as a non-dev, non-coder it still causes complications. Searching for things, using a bunch of FOSS stuff that sometimes hasn't been coded to tip-top "always fail gracefully" level, doing data analysis with R... spaces in filenames usually work out fine, but when they don't it's quite frustrating.
While can't say I prefer space in filename, I'm practical about it: - Are these files will be programatically processed in the future with a bash/batch file? - Yes: No spaces whatsoever. - No: Anything goes. Okay maybe not emojis...
it's just not worth tempting fate. sure, there are a lot of contexts today where spaces in filenames work just fine, but how sure are we, really, that we'll never want to use those files in a way that's inconvenient for?
@ojensen This boomer is also disinclined to put spaces in file names, Does camel case for multi-word names. That's an improvement. He used to use underscores or dashes between words.
I became tolerant with spaces once I put filenames in quotes... Then I encountered a folder that had a trailing space, and Windows didn't know how to handle that.
I've come to accept that they're allowed and work. But I still find them highly irritating and immediately "fix" any such files with underscores when and where they occur.

Had to fix a computer where some programs wouldnât launch (but others would), some programs could be installed but others couldnât, notably MSI installers. The reason? The owner had typed a backtick instead of an apostrophe in their username.
And then there's me over here putting : and ? in my folder names and then wondering why it fails when copying over MTP to my phone or to a windows partition. (and the MTP copying failed inelegantly, without explanation, so it took a while to figure it out)
@petitevieille I don't put spaces in filenames only because I'm too lazy to make sure I always use double quotes [1] or to escape spaces, in interactive shells but spaces and accented characters work just fine.
1. I keep that efforts for scripts because scripts should just work without expecting filenames to not contains spaces.
But doing it each time I ever use an interactive shell to work with my own files is PITA đ Fuck it. It's so much easier to use snake_case or PascalCase namingâŠ
I don't trust any kind of whitespace or non ASCII character in filenames. Got burned too many times. They may have been fine for a while now, but there is no way to know if there won't be some kind of side effect on some other system, today or in the furure. Nothing to do with age, just common sense.
To be fair, we're still bad at file names. In 2025 I can't install Rancher (a Docker tool my dayjob recommends) because my name is too long to make a pathname.
Well it's still a problem in many systems. Industrial applications that come with individual training, custom applications from makers who don't care to produce quality, embedded systems with a very minimal OS, old software that's evolved only on top of now very outdated kernel, ⊠I don't expect anything outside of 7 bit US ASCII to work when I don't know what I'm working with. OK, I'm old, too. But I insist that's not the only cause for my caution.
