I read what was published in the "Religion and Life" supplement last week (Thursday, 17 Jumada al-Ula 1429 AH - Issue No. 2531) and on some websites, including "Islam Memo" islammemo.cc/akhbar/American/2…, regarding the fatwa of Sheikh Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi – may God protect him – on the ruling on building churches in Muslim countries and the participation of Muslims in such activities. This fatwa was published on his website in response to a question posed to him. His response – may God forgive him – was that he permitted such an act, but under two conditions: First: If the Christians have a genuine need for it! Second: If the ruler permits it! He then stated that it is the right of the ruler to permit this based on Islamic political jurisprudence. In fact, Islamic political jurisprudence dictates the exact opposite. Rulers must prevent the construction of churches and businesses in Muslim lands. This is because with the future expansion of church construction and the proliferation of Christians in Muslim lands, the symbol of Islam will be obscured, and the sound of the church bell will rise above the call to monotheism. Indeed, Christians may even occupy the land when they multiply and gain control of the state, given the weakness of Muslims and the pressure exerted by Western institutions, under the pretext of self-determination. Thus, Muslim lands will shift from their hands to those of those Christians. The best evidence of this in the distant past is the land of Andalusia (now Spain). In recent years, Singapore's separation from Malaysia occurred when the infidel Chinese took control of the country's economic institutions and gained power. They turned against Malaysia and demanded independence, which was granted under the pretext of "self-determination." Dr. Al-Qaradawi: At the same time, he called on the ruler to refer to the fatwa of established scholars on this matter, “so that he does not fall into what God does not love or approve of!” Here is a strange contradiction. Dr. Al-Qaradawi permitted the construction of churches based on a statement by Abu Hanifa al-Nu’man, which permits the construction of churches in Muslim countries.
I will summarize the response in the following points:
First: The ruling on building churches in Muslim countries in general: The issue of building churches in Muslim countries is a serious matter that has not been left without clarification and elaboration by Islamic scholars. Preventing the construction of churches in Muslim countries preserves the identity and entity of Muslim society, in addition to the ideological danger, as the construction of churches constitutes an admission of disbelief in Muslim lands. The best person to explain and clarify this issue is the scholar Ibn al-Qayyim (may God have mercy on him) in his wonderful book, “Ahkam Ahl al-Dhimmah.” He elaborated on it by dividing the countries in which the people of the covenant and dhimmah were dispersed, with regard to churches, into three categories: First: Countries established by Muslims in Islam, such as Basra, Kufa, Wasit, Baghdad, and Cairo. Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, after mentioning the evidence for the prohibition, said: “This which the texts and traditions have brought is what the principles and foundations of Islamic law require. Establishing these things is a symbol of disbelief, and it is more serious than establishing bars and brothels, for those are symbols of disbelief and those are symbols of immorality. It is not permissible for the imam to reconcile with them in the land of Islam by establishing the symbols of sin and immorality, so how about establishing places of disbelief and polytheism?!” " . End quote. Second: The lands of the polytheists that Muslims conquered by force and coercion with the sword. It is impermissible to build any churches or synagogues in these lands. Third: The lands of the polytheists that were conquered by peace treaties. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim mentioned these in detail, which can be referred to in his place. What concerns us from these categories is the first. It is impermissible to build churches, synagogues, or any symbol of their unbelief in Muslim lands. This is what the scholars have unanimously agreed upon, as will be discussed later.
Second: A response to Sheikh al-Qaradawi's use of Abu Hanifa's opinion: As for Sheikh Dr. al-Qaradawi's use of Abu Hanifa's opinion, it is an opinion that contradicts the consensus. Imam al-Subki refuted the opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa al-Nu'man (may God have mercy on him), saying in his fatwa prohibiting the restoration of churches: "Perhaps Abu Hanifa only said that they should be built in villages where they live alone, according to their custom in that place. Other scholars forbid it because it is in Muslim lands and under their control, even if... They were isolated in it, and they were under their control, so they were not allowed to build churches because it was the land of Islam. Abu Hanifa did not want a village in which there were Muslims to be allowed to build a church in it. This is in the sense of "cities," so it is the subject of consensus. He said elsewhere: "Abu Hanifa's statement that it should be kept in villages is far-fetched and without any evidence. Perhaps he took it from the implication of Ibn Abbas's statement, which we will recount in "city." We say: "City" means any place, whether a city or a village." He also said about Ibn Abbas's statement: "As for Ibn Abbas's statement, it is very well-known... The scholars have taken this statement of Ibn Abbas and made it, along with the statement of Umar and the silence of the rest of the Companions, a consensus." Al-Subki also said, when recounting the consensus on the issue: "Building a church is forbidden by consensus, as is renovating it. The jurists also said: If someone bequeaths the building of a church, the bequest is invalid, because building a church is a sin, as is renovating it. There is no difference between the testator being a Muslim or a non-Muslim. Building, renovating, and renovating it is a sin—whether the one doing it is a Muslim or a non-Muslim. This is the law of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace." Al-Mardawi said in "Al-Insaf" : "His statement (and they are prohibited from building churches and selling). Sheikh Taqi al-Din, may God have mercy on him, said: "Unanimously." End quote.
Third: Building churches in the Arabian Peninsula is a more serious sin: What was previously mentioned regarding building churches and selling in Muslim lands in general, as for the Arabian Peninsula in particular, the ruling is more severe. Ibn al-Humam al-Hanafi said in Fath al-Qadir: "(His statement: and in the land of the Arabs they are prohibited from that in its cities and villages) means that no church should be built there or established, because they are not allowed to live in it, so there is no benefit in establishing it, unless it is used as a residence, and wine is not sold there, nor in any of its villages, nor in any of the waters of the Arabs. They are prohibited from making the land of the Arabs a residence and a homeland, unlike Umm

Thanks! Hadn't heard about this... The first time I heard anything negative about Wheaton, too. Sounds like nasty business and like he was judged unfairly. (Though of course I've only read his take on the situation, now.)
I'm certainly not making any excuses for anybody, not for Wheaton and not for anyone on the Fediverse...
Because all of this took place in 2018.
Since then we have learned that Wheaton has suffered a lot of trauma in his life by his parents and those close to him. (Search YouTube for "wil wheaton michael rosenbaum".)
I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't neurodivergent though I've never read or seen him speak publicly about that. But even if he's not, he does suffer from severe depression and PTSD as a result of the abuse he suffered from his parents.
So it might have been a perfect storm of things that brewed back then, I don't know.
And there are demographics here on the fediverse that certainly experience their own trauma, and for many the trauma is on-going. Certainly PTSD on them as well. They've been conditioned to mistrust any and everyone outside their own demographic because they have been hurt over and over again; and when one of them feels slighted, their entire community steps-in to defend them and support them (even if they don't have the full-story).
It was just a very sad turn of events. But any community that gangs up on another carrying their pitchforks is always going to be wrong in my book, no matter the circumstances.
Well, I suppose there's always nuance. Tolerating the intolerant can similarly lead to problems, and sometimes "pitchforks" are necessary there, I'd imagine. You need a group around you to cause change, after all.

The problem is dogpiling, brigading, and mob rule are all fueled by emotion. History is ripe with innocent people maimed or murdered because a mob sought "justice" for some slight.
(I am in no way equating what happened to Wheaton in this manner. I am just making an observation.)
One need only to look at the Jim Crow South of the United States, Israel/ Palestine, India, Pakistan, various Countries in Africa, Central America, and South America for multiple examples of a mob that was driven by pure emotion, destroying the life of someone that was innocent, because the mob refused to consider any facts that disagreed with their internal narrative.
To me that's not the paradox of tolerance, that's a collective group of people driven by emotion and not facts.
That's also not a group trying to cause change, that's a group seeking revenge for some perceived slight.
