I thought that this story could not get crazier and I am here to tell you that I was wrong:
My doctor’s office just asked me if I consented to an AI scribe taking session notes. (Obviously I said absolutely not and over my dead body).
I am physically incapable of minding my own business so I asked for details. They confirmed that means the rooms are capable of recording now, but assured me that it is “completely deleted” in a “timely fashion”.
I’m with One Medical. So that means the steward of that data is AMAZON.
I am utterly horrified.

Having his bombers taken off the chessboard is one thing, but the sheer humiliation Putin must be feeling right now must be sobering. Because if Zelenskyy’s drones can wipe out 40 of his strategic bombers, he’s probably not sleeping very soundly tonight in the Kremlin.

AI, bot farms and innocent indie victims: how music streaming became a hotbed of fraud and fakery | Music streaming | The Guardian
Robots listening to slop made by other robots...
Fraudsters are flooding Spotify, Apple Music and the rest with AI-generated tracks, to try and hoover up the royalties generated by people listening to them. These tracks are cheap, quick and easy to make, with Deezer estimating in April that over 20,000 fully AI-created tracks – that’s 18% of new tracks – were being ingested into its platform daily, almost double the number in January. The fraudsters often then use bots, AI or humans to endlessly listen to these fake songs and generate revenue, while others are exploiting upload services to get fake songs put on real artists’ pages and siphon off royalties that way.

Decolonize Means Attack: A Third-Worldist Anarchist Perspective on “Adventurism” and Settler Colonialism
When Luigi Mangione gunned down Brian Thompson in the streets of New York, the act was met with an outpour of praise and popular support. Leftists, anarchists, and liberals of all stripes joined hands in celebration, recognizing the moment as a powerful and symbolic direct action targeting the profiteers of death within the so called United States. When Elias Rodriguez then shot and killed two Israeli settlers in Washington DC, (one of whom volunteered and served in the IOF to go to Palestine and commit genocidal war crimes), suddenly we’re bombarded with statements of condemnation from so many who lauded the bravery of Luigi. Party building orgs like PSL and DSA go out of their way to condemn this man as “adventurist” and populist-leftist politicians such as Zohran Mamdani go as far as to praise the “victims” of the shooting. What truly seperates Luigi and Elias? What makes one act a deeply moving act of bravery and another a dangerous and cowardly exercise in adventurism? We believe it to be the colonial character of american leftism, and the settler in the head of Americans.
We are no strangers to claims of adventurism. The white marxists call us this any time we take direct action, any time we criticize their endless stream of parades and recruitment parties. When we heed the calls of the Palestinian resistance to actually blockade and disrupt the imperial core instead of waving branded signs and telling people to vote for their millionaire-funded political party. It is well established that the PSL actively worked against the formation of Palestine Action US)(1), calling the direct actions they took “adventurism” and refusing to support the Merrimack Four when they were subsequently arrested and imprisoned shutting down a weapons facility. Yet people still took action. Although heavy repression came down on Palestine Action US)(2) in November 2023, other autonomous actors still took direct action in the form of escalated demos, clandestine night actions and lock-ons to prevent the building from being accessed. These escalated tactics worked in tandem with a weekly picket run by BDS Boston (who not only refused to condemn but actively upheld and lauded the direct actions) which, with the implicit threat of the aforementioned direct actions, succeeded in disrupting work at the facility to such an extent that the office was vacated and Elbit was forced out. When the Merrimack NH factory was occupieds, this directly resulted in resignations of Elbit employees and a drop in their stock. When the DNC came to Chicago we saw this again. Vest-clad peace police, assaulted and threw autonomous protestors to the police for attempting to actually direct the so-called protest to where the DNC was being held, rather than the state-approved marching path. Marxist keyboard warriors quickly took to twitter to call anyone critical of the peace policing ‘adventurists’, constantly echoing the age old fed question “but what have you done?”. Well, what has PSL done? DSA? SAlt? Mobilized a couple votes for their political party, taken a couple big walks around various statehouses (but only on weekends, when nobody’s there), and condemned every single successful act of insurrection they can. It’s all a fucking racket. This obsession with party-building, recruitment, voting, all serves the settler idea that we need to (or can) build some sort of first-world socialism in good old Amerikkka. We can’t take action, we can’t stop the war machine, we can’t destroy western civilization; we just need to build, passively, we need to recruit more members and build out the mailing list until one day, in some utopian future, we have enough people and then maybe we’ll do a revolution. A revolution where the proletarian settlers of europe still dominate indigenous lands, only this time “for the people”, or maybe even “centering BIPOC voices!”. Setting aside the fact that this simply would not work, the fact that these groups are incredibly easy to infiltrate and disrupt (see CPUSA), the fact that their lists of members would be extremely easy to target; and suppress, and the fact that they are controlled by our millionaire class enemies who have far more to gain from the political clout they get by running their spouses for president than from doing anything material; the urge to not go all out for Palestine, to materially defend the institutions of capitalist imperialism by suppressing and condemning insurrection as adventurism, is fundamentally a racist one.
When these party-building marxists talk to us about how we aren’t in a stage where violence can be done, how they’re “building the conditions” to fight for a better world by recruiting to their party, what they’re really saying is that their ‘better world’ is only better for the settlers of the west. They don’t believe violence is necessary because the conditions they are experiencing are not so dire, are not so intense that it would yet be necessary. But it is extremely dire for the people of Palestine, of Lebanon, of the Congo, of all third-world nations, right fucking now. The very existence of the American empire and western imperialism means death and suffering for so many worldwide. Do the children of Palestine have time to wait for your party to recruit for another hundred years while the bombs keep dropping? It’s not a question of “do you believe we can win liberation”, it’s a question of “do you think the liberation of settlers on stolen land is more important than the liberation of brown people in the third world”. These settler communists will tell you the two go hand in hand, but they fundamentally do not. Even if their far away settler revolution were to succeed, millions upon millions of third world citizens will have been razed by the western death cult by then. What we need instead is action. If the thousands of settler communists who preach their revolution and sell their newspapers instead took part in waves and waves of a massified direct action campaign, the empire would be incapable of stopping it (we’ve seen with Palestine Action in the UK that even a tiny fraction of this number is capable of permanently shutting down multiple Elbit weapons factories). If all those who chant “resistance is justified’ at those silly parades actually resisted, if we could simply, truly, bring the war home as Elias Rodriguez did, it would send terror down the spine of any politician or diplomat who even thinks about supporting the genocide. If the army of liberals who glorify Assata and George Jackson, who treat Malcolm X and the Black Panthers as heroes actually lived by the ideals they preached, America might fall in a day. But they’re all pacified, by fear, by voting, by the promise of a revolution they’ll never see. If they were active today, we can say with absolute certainty that Assata Shakur and the Black Liberation Army would be condemned and labeled adventurists by the settler marxists of America.
In the tradition of the Black Liberation Army, American Indian Movement, and others who understood America to be the great satan of the world, we also recognize the fight on our own turf. Our priority will always be third world liberation, but that fight can never be divorced from decolonization right here on Turtle Island. The same settlers that colonize the global south turn inward, encroaching on poor neighborhoods and colonizing what little land black and brown people have been allowed. Indigenous peoples who have stewarded these lands for millenia are relegated to tiny reservations and forcefully assimilated into an empire that will destroy the land on a whim. Every prison, every pipeline, is an act of genocide against Black and Indigenous people in so called America. Every white anarchist that shows up to an indigenous land defense and is unwilling to take action, to risk their own privileged safety to defend the land that they themselves have colonized, is no better than these settler marxists or even the bloodthirsty american middle class which funds the destruction. Every student of a prestigious university like Columbia and Brown must reckon with the fact that they themselves are displacing and killing the poor people who used to live where the universities gentrified, and must rage against the university, not just for divestment, but for total abolition and the return of colonized lands to colonized peoples, It is no wonder these party building pyramid schemes recruit so heavily from universities; they are cut of the same colonial cloth. Make no mistake, the gentrifiers, the students, the white middle class suburbanites are no different than the pilgrims or the Israeli settlers. If you are of this class you have one choice: fight. Do not despair hopelessly or wallow in this guilt. Destroy the systems which have created and propogate you. Betray your race, your class, bring total annihilation to the American dream. The prisons must be burned and the pipelines must be sabotaged. Every single act of insurrection, every delay to construction of the colonial machines, every factory shuttered and shipment sabotaged is infinitely more valuable than the emptynpromises of the party builders and so called “revolutionaries”.
Ultimately, we as third-worldist anarchists seek not to bring about some internal settler revolution but the end of the western world order. As descendants of colonized peoples we have seen the trauma and death forced upon our ancestors, and we have seen the inaction of the various so called leftists, anarchists and communist parties of the west in the face of these atrocities. Our ancestors paid the price for the cowardly inaction of those who thought they could liberate themselves at our expense. We will not make the same mistake for the people of Palestine and beyond. We know that this insurrectionary rhetoric isn’t going to lead us to an anarchist or communist utopia in America, but neither is theirs. Look at the state of fascism in America and look at the state of the broad “left”. Let’s be real, it’s not happening. What we can do is build positive programs to survive the collapse, and do as much material damage to the genocidal war machine as we possible until then. If these are our two options, it would be better that America collapse altogether than continue to wage genocide on the global south. The hardships we might face surviving the fall of the empire are absolutely nothing in comparison to the weight that would be lifted off of the entire third world if America simply ceased to exist. You might not see it, but every comfort we have, from our sweatshop-made clothes to the gas in our cars is a result of destructive imperialism and to not take action against it is to be complicit. We reject all attempts at slowly building a far away settler revolution as colonizer bullshit, and instead join with our comrades of all stripes to uphold the tradition (and understand the imperfections) of the BLA, RAF, AIM, The Rotisken’rakéhte, United Freedom Front, Weather Underground, George Jackson Brigade, Brigate Rosse, The Angry Brigade, Action Directe, and all other militants who sought to destroy western imperialism from within the belly of the beast. We stand with decolonial marxists and all indigenous resistance to settler colonialism both here and abroad. Doing material damage to the war machine will always take priority over building a bullshit party. The resistance in Palestine is asking for our support. Will you answer the call?
1) We are not trying to glorify Pal Action US or act like it was amazing. We hold a number of critiques, primarily around multi-millionaire (and former PSL sponsor) Fergie Chambers, who we think is a total piece of shit and has since fucked off to Tunisia. That said, the actions taken by various people and crews, some affiliated and some not, were objectively significant in the shutting down of Elbit in Cambridge, and we think many of the actions are praise worthy even if one of the groups involved was flawed.
2) Centralized and heirarchical groups are easier to repress than decentralized, autonomous and nameless organizing. Even with the cell model, putting a name to your actions creates a much bigger target, and once the repression hits, it can demobilize parts of the group/cadre/whatever that that share the name. That said, we understand fully that sometimes creating a front group is helpful for inspiring others and creating a throughline with yours and others’ actions. The ELF was extremely successful at massifying eco-direct action, but also faced unprecedented repression for it, leading to a
number of heavy sentences. Do what seems best for your context.
3) Although the action was incredibly brave and arguably pretty successful, the actionists intentionally stayed at the scene to be arrested which resulted in 4 young people serving 2 months (inintially facing up to 37 years). We believe that even those who took part might agree that getting away would have been preferable, though wewill never condemn the action/actionists and understand tactics to be largely situational.
4) Diversity of Tactics Means Don’t Throw People to the Cops — Birds of a Feather Distro.
5) The German Communist Party learned this lesson early in to Nazi rule. Their aversion to action and obsession with electoralist politics & “building the conditions” led them to be wholly unprepared when the Nazis sought out and imprisoned or killed them all. Had they taken up arms and been prepared to fight, history might look very different.

Offshore Web Design: The Costly Risks of Cutting Corners
Outsourcing web design to an overseas team can seem like a quick way to save money. You pay lower rates and hope for a website that delivers. Sometimes, it works out. But often, it leads to unexpected costs and frustration.
Communication barriers and hidden expenses can turn a “budget” project into a pricey, stressful mess. If you’re choosing between offshore and a cheap web designer or a cheap web design agency, here’s what you need to consider.
Communication Challenges Run Deep
Offshore teams may speak fluent English, but design projects need more than words. Terms like “modern look” or “seamless navigation” can be interpreted differently across cultures.
You ask for a feature, they deliver something off-target, and you’re stuck revising and clarifying. Time zone gaps make it worse—your feedback might wait hours for a reply, dragging out timelines.
A cheap web designer or cheap web design agency shares your time zone and context. They align with your vision faster, communicate clearly, and keep the project moving smoothly.
The Hidden Price of Low Rates
Offshore quotes are often low, but they rarely cover the full cost. Unexpected expenses can include:
- Debugging sloppy or unstable code
- Redoing sections that don’t meet standards
- Extra fees for additional revisions
- Adding features missed due to miscommunication
- Hiring a local team to fix the outcome
Your time has value, too. Managing offshore teams means more emails, calls, and follow-ups—effort you could skip with a local cheap web design agency.
Design Needs a Local Perspective
Good design speaks to its audience. What’s “professional” or “engaging” varies by region. Offshore designers might create a site that feels out of place for Singapore users, with visuals or layouts that don’t resonate.
A cheap web designer knows local preferences. They understand what colors, fonts, and flows work for Singaporeans, ensuring your site feels trustworthy. Offshore teams often lack this insight.
Quality Can Be Hard to Judge
A sleek portfolio doesn’t guarantee quality. Some offshore teams use templates passed off as custom work, leading to sites that look good but lack durability or scalability.
With a local cheap web designer, you can meet them, review their projects, and verify their skills. Offshore teams are tougher to assess upfront.
Support Is Crucial Post-Launch
Websites need ongoing care—bug fixes, updates, or new features. If your offshore team disappears or shifts priorities, you’re left with a broken site or the cost of hiring someone new.
A local cheap web design agency is more accessible. They’re invested in long-term support and can address issues quickly, keeping your site functional.
Local Talent Can Be Affordable
Singapore has plenty of skilled, budget-friendly designers. A Singapore cheap website designer may not have the overhead of a large firm but still delivers quality, local expertise, and clear communication.
Check their portfolio and ask questions, but you’re starting with fewer risks than offshore outsourcing.
When Offshore Works—and When It Fails
Offshore design can suit basic projects or teams with in-house tech support. But it’s risky for:
- Custom or complex websites
- Businesses targeting Singapore customers
- Projects with tight schedules
- Sites needing ongoing maintenance
If you’re building a brand or a competitive site, communication and quality are too critical to compromise.
Wrapping Up
Offshore web design might look cheap, but communication gaps, cultural disconnects, and hidden costs can make it more expensive than expected. A cheap web designer or cheap web design agency offers clarity, speed, and a site tailored to your audience. The slightly higher upfront cost saves you time, stress, and money in the long run.
You’re not just buying a website—you’re choosing a partner. Pick one that delivers lasting value.

The Mind-Body Connection in Autoimmune Disorders: Stress, Inflammation, and Holistic Health
Living with an autoimmune disorder presents unique challenges. Your own immune system, designed to protect you from harm, mistakenly attacks your body’s healthy tissues. This can be a bewildering and frustrating experience. While medical treatments are crucial, we’re increasingly recognising the powerful link between our minds, our bodies, and the progression of these conditions. This is what we call the mind-body connection, and it plays a significant role in how you experience autoimmune disorders like Myasthenia Gravis.
What is the Mind-Body Connection?
The mind-body connection isn't just a concept; it’s a tangible network of communication between your thoughts, emotions, and physical health. Your brain, immune system, endocrine system (which produces hormones), and nervous system are constantly interacting. What affects one, affects the others. For example, when you feel stressed, your brain sends signals that trigger a cascade of hormonal and chemical changes throughout your body, directly influencing your immune system.
Stress: A Trigger for Inflammation
We all experience stress, but for someone with an autoimmune disorder, chronic stress can be particularly problematic. When you’re under stress, your body releases hormones like cortisol. While cortisol is essential for many bodily functions, sustained high levels can disrupt your immune system’s balance. This disruption can lead to increased inflammation.
Inflammation is your body's natural response to injury or infection. It’s a vital part of the healing process.1 However, in autoimmune disorders, inflammation becomes a persistent problem. Your immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, causing ongoing inflammation that contributes to symptoms like pain, fatigue, and organ damage. Chronic stress can fuel this inflammatory cycle, potentially worsening your symptoms and even influencing the disease's activity. Imagine your immune system as a finely tuned orchestra. Stress can throw the conductor off, causing the instruments (your immune cells) to play out of tune and create disharmony in your body.
How Stress Impacts Autoimmune Conditions
Consider Myasthenia Gravis (MG), a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles, responsible for breathing and movement.2 In MG, your immune system produces antibodies that attack healthy communication points between your nerves and muscles, leading to muscle weakness. When you experience significant stress, whether it’s from work, relationships, or even illness, you might notice your MG symptoms worsening. Your eyelids might droop more, your speech might become slurred, or your breathing might feel more strained. This isn’t a coincidence; it's a direct reflection of how stress can impact your immune system and, consequently, your MG.
Stress doesn't cause autoimmune disorders, but it can act as a significant trigger for flare-ups or an exacerbation of symptoms. It can alter the delicate balance of your immune system, making it more prone to attacking your own tissues. Think of it like this: your autoimmune condition is a simmering fire. Stress is like pouring fuel onto that fire, making it burn hotter and brighter.
The Role of Holistic Health
Holistic health approaches focus on treating the whole person – mind, body, and spirit – rather than just addressing isolated symptoms. This perspective is incredibly valuable when managing autoimmune disorders. It acknowledges that your physical health is intricately linked to your emotional and mental well-being. By adopting holistic practices, you can create a supportive environment for your body to heal and manage the impact of stress and inflammation.
Strategies for Nurturing Your Mind-Body Connection
You have the power to influence your mind-body connection. Here are some practical strategies you can incorporate into your daily life to help manage stress, reduce inflammation, and promote overall well-being:
• Stress Reduction Techniques: These are vital for calming your nervous system and reducing the release of stress hormones.
o Mindfulness and Meditation: Practising mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment without judgment. Meditation, a formal practice of mindfulness, can significantly reduce stress and improve emotional regulation. Even just 10-15 minutes a day can make a difference. You can find guided meditations online or through apps.
o Deep Breathing Exercises: Simple deep breathing can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for "rest and digest" functions. Try breathing in slowly through your nose, feeling your abdomen rise, holding for a few seconds, and then exhaling slowly through your mouth.
o Yoga and Tai Chi: These practices combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation. They are gentle yet powerful ways to reduce stress, improve flexibility, and enhance your sense of calm.
o Spending Time in Nature: Research shows that exposure to natural environments can lower stress hormones, reduce blood pressure, and improve mood. Even a short walk in a park can be beneficial.
o Creative Expression: Engaging in hobbies like painting, writing, playing music, or gardening can be incredibly therapeutic. They provide an outlet for your emotions and a sense of purpose, helping to reduce stress.
• Dietary Considerations: What you eat profoundly impacts your body’s inflammatory response.
o Anti-Inflammatory Diet: Focus on whole, unprocessed foods. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
Fruits and Vegetables: Aim for a wide variety of colourful fruits and vegetables. They are packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Found in fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), flaxseeds, and chia seeds, omega-3s are known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
Limit Processed Foods, Sugar, and Unhealthy Fats: These can all promote inflammation in your body. Read food labels carefully and reduce your intake of highly processed items, sugary drinks, and foods high in saturated and trans fats.
o Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Dehydration can exacerbate fatigue and other symptoms.
• Regular Physical Activity: While it might seem counterintuitive when you're fatigued, regular, gentle exercise can significantly improve your energy levels and reduce inflammation.
o Listen to Your Body: This is crucial, especially with conditions like Myasthenia Gravis. Don't push yourself too hard. Start with short walks, gentle stretching, or water exercises.
o Consistency is Key: Aim for regular, moderate activity rather than sporadic intense workouts. Even 20-30 minutes of walking most days of the week can make a difference.
o Consult Your Doctor: Always discuss your exercise plans with your doctor or physiotherapist, especially if you have an autoimmune condition, to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your current health status.
• Quality Sleep: Sleep is a restorative process for your body. Lack of sleep can increase inflammation and stress.
o Create a Sleep Routine: Go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time each day, even on weekends.
o Optimise Your Sleep Environment: Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet, and cool.
o Avoid Screens Before Bed: The blue light emitted from phones, tablets, and computers can interfere with melatonin production, a hormone that regulates sleep.3
o Limit Caffeine and Alcohol: Especially in the hours leading up to bedtime.
• Building a Strong Support System: You don't have to face your autoimmune disorder alone.
o Connect with Others: Join support groups, either online or in person, where you can share experiences and gain insights from others living with similar conditions. Knowing you're not alone can significantly reduce feelings of isolation and stress.
o Communicate with Loved Ones: Talk openly with your family and friends about what you're going through. Educate them about your condition so they can better understand and support you.
o Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling with stress, anxiety, or depression, consider speaking to a therapist or counsellor. They can provide coping strategies and emotional support.
Myasthenia Gravis and Holistic Support
For individuals with Myasthenia Gravis, integrating holistic health practices can be particularly empowering. While medication remains the cornerstone of MG treatment, these complementary approaches can significantly improve your quality of life. For instance, managing stress can lead to fewer muscle weakness exacerbations. Gentle exercise can help maintain muscle strength and flexibility without overtaxing your system. A nutritious diet can support your overall energy levels and reduce inflammation. If you are interested in exploring other complementary approaches, you can read more about Natural Remedies For Myasthenia Gravis in our other content.
Remember, these holistic strategies are not a replacement for your prescribed medical treatments. Always continue to follow your doctor’s advice and take your medications as directed. However, by embracing a holistic approach, you actively participate in your own well-being. You become an active partner in managing your condition, rather than simply a passive recipient of treatment.
The Path Forward
Recognising and actively addressing the mind-body connection in autoimmune disorders can be a transformative step in your health journey. It’s about empowering yourself with knowledge and practical tools to live a fuller, more balanced life, even with an autoimmune condition. You have a profound capacity to influence your health and well-being. By focusing on stress reduction, nourishing your body through diet and movement, prioritising sleep, and building a strong support system, you actively contribute to calming inflammation and supporting your immune system. Take small, consistent steps, celebrate your progress, and remember that every positive choice you make contributes to your overall health and resilience.
Why Bell Labs worked so well, and could innovate so much, while today’s innovation, in spite of the huge private funding, goes in hype-and-fizzle cycles that leave relatively little behind, is a question I’ve been asking myself a lot in the past years.
And I think that the author of this article has hit the nail on its head on most of the reasons - but he didn’t take the last step in identifying the root cause.
What Bell Labs achieved within a few decades is probably unprecedented in human history:
- They employed folks like Nyquist and Shannon, who laid the foundations of modern information theory and electronic engineering while they were employees at Bell.
- They discovered the first evidence of the black hole at the center of our galaxy in the 1930s while analyzing static noise on shortwave transmissions.
- They developed in 1937 the first speech codec and the first speech synthesizer.
- They developed the photovoltaic cell in the 1940, and the first solar cell in the 1950s.
- They built the first transistor in 1947.
- They built the first large-scale electronic computers (from Model I in 1939 to Model VI in 1949).
- They employed Karnaugh in the 1950s, who worked on the Karnaugh maps that we still study in engineering while he was an employee at Bell.
- They contributed in 1956 (together with AT&T and the British and Canadian telephone companies) to the first transatlantic communications cable.
- They developed the first electronic musics program in 1957.
- They employed Kernighan, Thompson and Ritchie, who created UNIX and the C programming language while they were Bell employees.
And then their rate of innovation suddenly fizzled out after the 1980s.
I often hear that Bell could do what they did because they had plenty of funding. But I don’t think that’s the main reason. The author rightly points out that Google, Microsoft and Apple have already made much more profit than Bell has ever seen in its entire history. Yet, despite being awash with money, none of them has been as impactful as Bell. Nowadays those companies don’t even innovate much besides providing you with a new version of Android, of Windows or the iPhone every now and then. And they jump on the next hype wagon (social media, AR/VR, Blockchain, AI…) just to deliver half-baked products that (especially in Google’s case) are abandoned as soon as the hype bubble bursts.
Let alone singlehandedly spear innovation that can revolutionize an entire industry, let alone make groundbreaking discoveries that engineers will still study a century later.
So what was Bell’s recipe that Google and Apple, despite having much more money and talented people, can’t replicate? And what killed that magic?
Well, first of all Bell and Kelly had an innate talent in spotting the “geekiest” among us. They would often recruit from pools of enthusiasts that had built their own home-made radio transmitters for fun, rather than recruiting from the top business schools, or among those who can solve some very abstract and very standardized HackerRank problems.
And they knew how to manage those people. According to Kelly’s golden rule:
How do you manage genius? You don’t
Bell specifically recruited people that had that strange urge of tinkering and solving big problems, they were given their lab and all the funding that they needed, and they could work in peace. Often it took years before Kelly asked them how their work was progressing.
Compare it to a Ph.D today who needs to struggle for funding, needs to produce papers that get accepted in conferences, regardless of their level of quality, and must spend much more time on paperwork than on actual research.
Or to an engineer in a big tech company that has to provide daily updates about their progress, has to survive the next round of layoffs, has to go through endless loops of compliance, permissions and corporate bureaucracy in order to get anything done, has his/her performance evaluated every 3 months, and doesn’t even have control on what gets shipped - that control has been taken away from engineers and given to PMs and MBA folks.
Compare that way of working with today’s backlogs, metrics, micromanaging and struggle for a dignified salary or a stable job.
We can’t have the new Nyquist, Shannon or Ritchie today simply because, in science and engineering, we’ve moved all the controls away from the passionate technical folks that care about the long-term impact of their work, and handed them to greedy business folks who only care about short-term returns for their investors.
So we ended up with a culture that feels like talent must be managed, even micromanaged, otherwise talented people will start slacking off and spending their days on TikTok.
But, as Kelly eloquently put it:
“What stops a gifted mind from just slacking off?” is the wrong question to ask. The right question is, “Why would you expect information theory from someone who needs a babysitter?”
Or, as Peter Higgs (the Higgs boson guy) put it:
It’s difficult to imagine how I would ever have enough peace and quiet in the present sort of climate to do what I did in 1964… Today I wouldn’t get an academic job. It’s as simple as that. I don’t think I would be regarded as productive enough.
Or, as Shannon himself put it:
I’ve always pursued my interests without much regard for final value or value to the world. I’ve spent lots of time on totally useless things.
So basically the most brilliant minds of the 20th century would be considered lazy slackers today and be put on a PIP because they don’t deliver enough code or write enough papers.
So the article is spot on in identifying why Bell could invent, within a few years, all it did, while Apple, despite having much more money, hasn’t really done anything new in the past decade. MBAs, deadlines, pseudo-objective metrics and short-termism killed scientific inquiry and engineering ingenuity.
But the author doesn’t go one step further and identify the root cause.
It correctly spots the business and organizational issues that exist in managing talent today, but it doesn’t go deeper into their economic roots.
You see, MBA graduates and CEOs didn’t destroy the spirit of scientific and engineering ingenuity spurred by the Industrial Revolution just because they’re evil. I mean, there’s a higher chance for someone who has climbed the whole corporate ladder to be a sociopath than there is for someone you randomly picked from the street, but not to the point where they would willingly tame and screw the most talented minds of their generation, and squeeze them into a Jira board or a metric that looks at the number of commits, out of pure sadism.
They did so because the financial incentives have drastically changed from the times of Bells Labs.
The Bells Labs were basically publicly funded. AT&T operated the telephone lines in the US, paid by everyone who used telephones, and they reinvested a 1% tax into R&D (the Bells Labs). And nobody expected a single dime of profits to come out from the Bells Labs.
And btw, R&D was real R&D with no strings attached at the time. In theory also my employer does R&D today - but we just ended up treating whatever narrow iterative feature requested by whatever random PM as “research and development”. It’s not like scientists have much freedom in what to research or engineers have much freedom in what to develop. R&D programs have mostly just become a way for large businesses to squeeze more money out of taxpayers, put it in their pockets, and not feel any moral obligation of contributing to anything other than their shareholders’ accounts.
And at the time the idea of people paying taxes, so talented people in their country could focus on inventing the computer, the Internet or putting someone on the moon, without the pressure of VCs asking for their dividends, or PMs asking them to migrate everything to another cloud infrastructure by next week, or to a new shiny framework that they’ve just heard in a conference, wasn’t seen as a socialist dystopia. It was before the neoliberal sociopaths of the Chicago school screwed up everything.
The America that invested into the Bell Labs and into the Apollo project was very different from today’s America. It knew that it was the government’s job to foster innovation and to create an environment where genuinely smart people could do great things without external pressure. That America hadn’t yet been infected by the perverse idea that the government should always be small, that it’s not the government’s job to make people’s lives better, and that it was the job of privately funded ventures seeking short-term returns to fund moonshots.
And, since nobody was expecting a dime back from Bell, nobody would put deadlines on talented people, nobody hired unqualified and arrogant business specialists to micromanage them, nobody would put them on a performance improvement plan if they were often late at their daily standups or didn’t commit enough lines of code in the previous quarter. So they had time to focus on how to solve some of the most complex problems that humans ever faced.
So they could invent the transistor, the programming infrastructure still used to this day, and lay the foundations of what engineers study today.
The most brilliant minds of our age don’t have this luxury. So they can’t revolutionarize our world like those in the 20th century did.
Somebody else sets their priorities and their deadlines.
They can’t think of moonshots because they’re forced to work on the next mobile app riding the next wave of hype that their investors want to release to market so they can get even richer.
They have to worry about companies trying to replace them with AI bots and business managers wanting to release products themselves by “vibe coding”, just to ask those smart people to clean up the mess they’ve done, just like babies who are incapable of cleaning up the food they’ve spilled on the floor.
They are seen as a cost, not as a resource. Kelly used to call himself a “patron” rather than a “manager”, and he trusted his employees, while today’s managers and investors mostly see their engineering resources as squishy blobs of flesh standing between their ambitious ideas and their money, and they can’t wait to replace them with robots that just fullfill all of their wishes.
Tech has become all about monetization nowadays and nothing about ingenuity.
As a result, there are way more brilliant minds (and way more money) in our age going towards solving the “convince people to click on this link” problem rather than solving the climate problem, for example.
Then of course they can’t invent the next transistor, or bring the next breakthrough in information theory.
Then of course all you get, after one year of the most brilliant minds of our generation working at the richest company that has ever existed, is just a new iPhone.

Naja...
