In 1975 in #Detroit, the Hackney brothers recorded an album for their band… called DEATH. Despite being punk before the likes of the Ramones or Sex Pistols, no record label would sign them unless they changed their name. They refused, the recordings went to a box in the attic, and the band eventually broke up after self-releasing one single.

Decades later, the sons of Bobby Hackney heard that single and started asking questions… which eventually led to the release of that album on Drag City Records in 2009. To honor their late brother David’s vision, they named the album “For the Whole World to See” and embarked on a tour that hit several of the world’s continents… but not Africa.

Slovenly Recordings is ecstatic — and honored — to announce that in November 2025, on the 50th anniversary of the recording of their album, and 25 years after David Hackney’s passing, DEATH will perform in #Africa for the first time! …at We’re Loud Fest in #Nairobi, #Kenya.

Astronomers using the European Space Agency’s Cheops mission have caught an exoplanet that seems to be triggering flares of radiation from the star it orbits. These tremendous explosions are blasting away the planet’s wispy atmosphere, causing it to shrink every year.

This is the first-ever evidence for a ‘planet with a death wish’. Though it was theorised to be possible since the nineties, the flares seen in this research are around 100 times more energetic than expected.

Nuclear bombs are incredibly expensive. Fissile materials have to be mined and then enriched. Delivery technology must be invented, improved, built, and maintained. States can do this because they can steal your money through taxation or print it (and enrich themselves and their cronies in the process due to the Cantillon Effect).

In a condition of market anarchism, a private person must acquire this wealth through providing goods and services. He would have to be a successful businessman—offering things that people want, things that people feel would make their lives better—BEFORE he can get the wealth necessary to build even a small number of missiles/bombs.

So does our nuclear-mad psychopath intentionally seek success in business just so he can acquire the wealth needed to develop even a small arsenal? Maybe.

But then we must ask—what are his incentives to do so? Bloodlust? Lunacy? Again, maybe, but certainly not a common scenario.

Meanwhile, we know the perverse incentives of the state. We know that “War is the heath of the state.” War makes the state more powerful. War allows centralizers to centralize. War allows some to become fabulously wealthy making weapons. “Democracy” allows all of these costs to be passed on to the people. And the nationalism of the modern state allows authorities to convince people in their own lands that people in far-off lands are their bitter enemies. To sacrifice their wealth and treasure, to sacrifice themselves and their children to fight this far-off enemy. And if you are unwilling to fight, they can draft you and kill you if you refuse.

The private psychopath in a condition of market anarchism has none of these incentives and none of these abilities. The state, by contrast, has all of them. The state has a record of using nuclear weapons. The state can build and maintain a world-destroying number of them. The Japanese were suing for peace when “we” dropped Fat Man and Little Boy, just to show the USSR we meant business.

I am not saying that psychos will not exist in a condition of market anarchism, or that such a condition will be perfect. But when we compare that possibility to the current reality, how can we possibly prefer the current reality?

Today in Labor History July 2, 1929: Augusto Sandino left for México to seek aid for his Nicaraguan rebels, fighting the U.S. occupation of his country. The rebellion lasted from 1927-1933. In 1934, he was assassinated by General Anastasio Somoza, who seized power in a 1936 coup d’etat, and who, along with his sons, ran the country as dictators until the Sandinista Revolution of 1979 ended their reign of terror. While in México, during early 1920s, Sandino participated in strikes led by the IWW. Inspired by the Wobblies, he returned to foment revolution in Nicaragua, adopting the IWW's black and red syndicalist colors in their Revolutionary Flag.

I don't like patents, nor copyrights, because ownership is ethically justified SOLELY and EXCLUSIVELY by the fact that what is claimed as "property" is subject to rivalrous consumption:

Unlike physical goods, which are scarce and rivalrous (e.g., if I take your apple, you no longer have it), ideas can be shared infinitely without diminishing their availability. In der sommerlichen Hitzewelle wird an einem Kölner Gymnasium noch zusätzlich eingeheizt: In mehreren Räumen lässt sich die Heizung nicht abschalten und läuft auch jetzt auf vollen Touren. Insgesamt 64 Thermostate und Heizkörperventile in rund 30 Klassenräumen seien defekt und müssten ausgetauscht werden, teilte die Stadt Köln auf Anfrage mit. Zuvor hatte die „Kölnische Rundschau“ berichtet.

Von der Stadt heißt es, der Defekt sei festgestellt worden, nachdem bei der städtischen Gebäudewirtschaft vor zwei Wochen eine Störmeldung über zu hohe Temperaturen in Klassenräumen eingegangen sei. Der Austausch der Teile sei inzwischen beauftragt und solle kurzfristig erfolgen.

Nach Angaben der Stadt handelt es sich bei den Heizkörpern in den Klassenräumen um sogenannte Behördenmodelle, die über eine definierte Voreinstellung verfügen und nicht manuell bedient werden können. Dies sei Standard, damit die Schülerinnen und Schüler nicht selbstständig Einstellungen an den Heizungen vornehmen könnten.

„Es ist natürlich absurd, dass wir hitzefrei geben und selbst mitheizen“, sagte Siegfried Feldmar, Schulleiter des Hölderlin-Gymnasiums, der „Kölnischen Rundschau“. „Wir können es uns gar nicht erlauben, auf die Räume zu verzichten.“ Er hoffe, dass die Verwaltung das Problem in den Griff bekomme
