Adobe is now processing all your PDFs in the cloud, by default. The setting to “Enable generative AI features in Acrobat” was on, and I didn’t know it until I opened a document and Adobe asked me if I wanted a document summary. It’s annoying to have to click “No,” so I opened settings to disable the prompt.

THE PROBLEM
I sign Non-Disclosure Agreements for many of my clients. Adobe is a potential leak of protected information. I don’t know what Adobe does with this information. I don’t know what they store, or for how long. I don’t know what country (or countries) the data is stored in. I don’t know what LLMs are trained with this data. And I don’t need to know. What I need to know is that they won’t use default opt-in as a legal excuse to wiretap my information.

I recommend that you check your Adobe settings on all devices, for all Adobe accounts.

Amid Trump’s immigration crackdown, travel bans & sweeping global tariffs (& his threats, detaining tourists, alignment with the RW parties: around the world, Putin...), the US is expected to be the only one out of 184 countries to see foreign visitor spending fall in 2025.

The study suggests that the US economy is on track🚨to lose $12.5B in INTL spending this year alone -actual shortfall might be much greater.

Qatar could mediate, but it couldn't make decisions for Hamas. Its influence was real only when it served as the organization's main ATM, funding its activities and civilian institutions, paying salaries to officers and fighters, and helping to rebuild Gaza after every Israeli military operation. And all that was done with the permission of the Israeli government.

Similarly, Egypt could put pressure on Hamas only as long as it controlled the economic pipeline that fed Gaza and Hamas – the Rafah border crossing. But this lever disappeared after the Israel Defense Forces took control of both the crossing and the Philadelphi corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border.
As a result, in an unprecedented development, the

Americans are now directly negotiating with Hamas, but nobody is complaining about them violating the principle of not negotiating with a terror group. Moreover, Trump can no longer threaten to open the gates of hell on Gaza if Hamas doesn't accept the proposed deal. Hell has already been achieved.

These quotes are not representative of the whole article, which is long, and covers many different themes, but jumped out at me as being observations I've not seen articulated a lot.

Filiu [one of the only historians studying the Gaza Strip] accuses Israel of turning a blind eye for years to what has been going on in Gaza: "For 20 years now, Israel has been unable to nurture networks of collaborators inside Gaza. [The Israelis] tried every tool in the book, and they failed. Because they don't know Gaza's society. And because they operate either from a tank or from a drone, which is not the most efficient way to operate."

To bolster his views, Filiu cites a surprising example: the Israeli television series "Fauda." "The first two seasons, which were set in the West Bank, were quite impressive," he says. The third season, which takes place in Gaza, however, was out of touch with reality. The people who created it, he adds, "don't know what they're talking about. They're speaking about Mosul, they're speaking about the Taliban, they're not talking about Gaza. They don't know Gaza."

One of the tragic consequences of this blindness, Filiu observes, is the mortal blow being dealt to everyone in the Strip who opposes Hamas. "There were thriving universities, intellectual circles and artists. There were so many rap groups in Gaza, and you can imagine that their members weren't exactly sympathetic to Hamas.
"There was a civil society that didn't want to be part of Hamas' Islamist scheme," he continues, "but all that has been destroyed now by the Israeli invasion.

Another thing occurs to me, a propos of this piece:
Filiu managed to get official permission for entry into the Gaza Strip from Israel, without being part of a humanitarian mission. Which proves that it is not the case that “international journalists are not getting in because no-one is getting in except humanitarians". Whatever security hoopla they made a history professor jump through they could make a CNN correspondent jump through. Israel is choosing to ban international journalists from Gaza, and journalists specifically.

EDIT: In another interview (Le Monde) he clarifies: "I was integrated into the local team of Doctors Without Borders, which is doing extraordinary work in Gaza and which I assisted thanks to my intimate knowledge of the enclave". It's unclear whether that was just for logistics or whether that means he was officially allowed in •as• "humanitarian assistance".

The defense establishment, and following its lead, most Israelis, expect one thing from the Palestinian: surrender. Voluntarily and quietly. It's expected that the Palestinian won't defend himself, won't resist, won't fight the occupation imposed by Israel. If she dares defend herself, she will immediately become a target. If he appeals to the United Nations, he will be accused of "political terrorism." This system is designed to see the Palestinian as the ultimate and immediate suspect, even when she's the victim.

According to this system, a Palestinian who picks up a stone is a terrorist, but a settler who burns down a village is "frustrated.”…
This isn't security or self-defense. It's apartheid, it's ethnic supremacy, and it won't last forever.
...
Israel claims that Palestinian resistance of any kind is violent and illegitimate, but the question is: What does legitimate resistance look like in a situation of ongoing occupation? Is the Israeli justification of self-defense an exclusive right, or does this right also belong to the Palestinians?
...
we've never heard a Western leader talk about the right of the Palestinian people to self-defense. In the eyes of the world, the Palestinian should simply die in silence.

Al-Qassam Targets Occupiers, Vehicles in Top-Tier Op. in Khan Younis, Yemen Continues Missile Attacks

The al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced Saturday the execution of a top-tier operation against Zionist occupation forces in Khan Younis, in the southern Gaza Strip.

According to details released by the Brigades, the operation took place on Friday morning near the Directorate of Education in the al-Mahatta area, in central Khan Younis. Resistance fighters stormed a gathering of Zionist soldiers and their military vehicles, the statement added.

As part of the operation, al-Qassam fighters targeted two Merkava tanks using two Shawaz explosive devices, resulting in its crew members being either killed or injured.

In addition to the tanks, the Resistance fighters also struck an armored personnel carrier with a Yassin 105 shell.

When Zionist rescue forces arrived at the scene, they were attacked with light and medium machine gun fire, the Brigades pointed out.

During the operation, al-Qassam fighters observed the landing of helicopters conducting an evacuation that lasted several hours.

The Brigades also reported a second operation on Friday, in which its fighters targeted another Zionist armored personnel carrier using a Yassin 105 shell on al-Bi’ah Street in central Khan Younis.

Al-Quds Brigades documents complex, top-tier operation in al-Shuja’iyya

Meanwhile, the al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) Movement, released footage on Friday documenting a complex and top-tier operation its Resistance fighters conducted on Wednesday in the eastern al-Shuja’iyya neighborhood of Gaza City.

The al-Quds Brigades operation targeted Zionist military vehicles and soldiers, as well as homes where occupation forces had taken cover, engaging in direct confrontations at close range.

The commander of the operation reported that the Zionist soldiers showed no initiative or response, resorting only to screaming and fleeing without returning significant fire toward the Resistance fighters.

He added that the fighters encountered charred bodies of officers and soldiers, confirming that 40 Zionist soldiers were either killed or wounded, and stated that the occupation continues to lie and conceal its losses as it always does.

Yemen launches ballistic missile in solidarity

Zionist air defenses scrambled to intercept a ballistic missile launched from Yemen over occupied Palestine early Sunday.

At 2:45 am (local time), the Zionist military command warned that a missile was launched from Yemen, later announcing that its air defenses successfully intercepted it. Sirens sounded in settlements in the southern occupied West Bank as well as some settlements near the Dead Sea.

The strike comes as Yemen reiterates its military support for Gaza, vowing continued operations until the aggression ends.

Yemenis affirm their continued support for Palestine

On Friday, the Yemeni governorates of Saadah, Raymah, and Marib witnessed massive rallies in support of the Palestinian people and their Resistance and in solidarity with the Gaza Strip under the slogan: “Steadfast with Gaza, prepared and mobilized in the face of aggression.”

Participants raised slogans affirming Yemen’s unwavering support for Palestine, in light of the ongoing Zionist aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Earlier, the leader of the Ansar Allah movement, Sayyed Abdul-Malik al-Houthi, emphasized the continuation of the Yemeni ban on Zionist shipping, affirming its success and praising Yemen’s ability to continue the battle.

Israeli outlet Haaretz has published an article titled “Now I Understand Why Israel Is Denying Journalists Access to the Appalling Scene in Gaza” by French historian Jean-Pierre Filiu, who spent a month in Gaza after entering with a busload of French physicians.
#israel has banned journalists from #gaza in order to hide its war crimes, making doctors the de facto western reporters on the ground. And they’re all reporting the same thing about what they are seeing.

FreeOffice isn't open source. It's available as a deb or an RPM, or a basic archive. No Flatpak, Snap or Appimage, though.

FreeOffice does word processing, creating spreadsheets, and presentations. FreeOffice aims to be as compatible with MS Office as can be. FreeOffice gives you a choice between the classic menubar + toolbar combo, and the ribbon interface that MS office uses.

In terms of Office compatibility, I tried a few complex templates, and there seem to be a few issues on word documents, with header images not being in the right place, and elements being moved where they don't belong.

FreeOffice is free of charge to download, but the free version does lack a few features.

You probably all know about Libreoffice. It has a word processor, a spreadsheet module, a presentation app, but also a flowchart /diagram editor that also doubles as a PDF editor, and a database module comparable to Microsoft Access.

It's completely open source, doesn't cost a dime, and is installable in virtually every way you'd ever want: deb, rpm, flatpak, snap, appimage, you name it.

LibreOffice is compatible with the opendocument format, but also with MS office formats. The compatibility with openXML formats, like docx, xlsx or pptx isn't 100% perfect though.

In terms of interface, LibreOffice is super customizable: not only can it pick up your GTK or Qt theme, but you can also change its icons in the settings, and change how the interface looks and feels. By default, it uses the older menubar + toolbar layout, but you can change that into a ribbon interface, a simplified ribbon, a grouped bar, a sidebar, basically you can do whatever you want, and customize each toolbar to add or remove what you want.

There's another open source office suite for Linux, and that's OnlyOffice. It only offers the 3 basic modules: word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. It's free to download and open source, and comes as a deb, an RPM, a flatpak, an appimage, or a snap package, so anyone can get it.

OnlyOffice supports the Microsoft OpenXML document format, as well as the opendocument format that Libreoffice defaults to, and the older proprietary office formats as well. Compatibility seems better than FreeOffice, and LibreOffice, at least with my test templates. It actually seems pretty much identical to how MS office renders the same document.

In terms of interface, Onlyoffice isn't as customizable as LibreOffice: you only get a ribbon interface, and you can't change what's displayed in each toolbar. The ribbon will use a dedicated color for each program, if you use the light theme, so they're still easy to differentiate. Onlyoffice also supports interface scaling, with factors ranging from 100% to 200% with 25% increments.

Now we come to another non open source office suite, WPS Office. You get a word processor, a spreadsheet module, and a presentation module, and you also get a PDF viewer. It offers deb and RPM packages, and it's also available on flathub, and as a snap.

In terms of compatibility, WPS opens older office docs, newer office docs, as well as their own format. Compatibility seems good, at least with openXML formats, although a little bit less perfect than OnlyOffice. It should be good enough for most people.
