1. Regularly flags payments to subscription services as potential fraud even though I've used them for years, paying with the same debit card, and in spite of the fact that I've indicated many times that I trust these services; and 2. Has never identified a real instance of fraud
Whatever they're doing to detect potential fraud, it has a large false positive rate and does not seem adaptive (at least in my case). It's especially odd to me that this bank asks if I've authorized transactions it flagged as potentially fraudulent, I indicate no, this is not fraud, and yet the system continues to flag transactions with the same vendor as potentially fraudulent. I'm giving it a reinforcement signal that couldn't be more clear!
Edit: this post is not a request for banking or financial advice, nor an invitation to critique my choices. I'm venting about what seems to be a poor algorithm and if you have any comments or insights into that particular topic I'm happy to hear them.
Stop using your debit card for purchases. Debit is for bank drafts only. If a fraudulent charge is issued, it might take your bank the full two-weeks grace period to restore your funds and you might miss an important payment.
Use credit cards for all payments always. If a fraudulent charge is issued on your credit card, it is the bank's money, not yours, that is stolen. They've got a fraud department to protect their assets and aid in prosecuting fraud. During that time your credited money for that fraudulent charge is restored.
I only ever use my debit card at the bank for cash withdrawals.
Edit: I have several cards that I pick through based on the purchase. Costco for fuel, a travel card for all restaurants and travel, and a cash back card for online shit. And I use cash for local businesses now because their cc fees are high and I appreciate having a local economy that isn't just national chains.

I don't know where you live, but in the US the relevant consumer protection laws for credit vs debit vary pretty dramatically. You're far more protected using a credit card than a debit card for purchases. With debit card fraud, they can drain your account of money you actually have; with credit, they're just borrowing money in your name - you haven't lost anything until you actually make a credit card payment. Furthermore, the maximum liability for credit fraud is $50; the maximum for debit fraud can be the total amount stolen, depending on when you report it.
I suspect your bank has their fraud settings tuned so high because debit card fraud can be catastrophic. If someone fraudulently uses your debit card fraudulently and drains your account, you may start bouncing checks, lose your ability to buy food or pay rent/mortgage, etc. Those things carry fees, fines, and long-lasting consequences that, even after the fraudulent money is returned (which can take a long time), you'll still have to deal with. It's especially risky for people who have limited funds - a few bounced check or late fees can be the difference between staying afloat and sinking into an inescapable debt cycle.
Additionally, if you fail to notice a fraudulent transaction for more than 60 days on a debit card, you lose any legal protection; that money is gone unless your bank decides out of the goodness of its heart to reimburse you. I don't know any banks that would do that.
I highly doubt they have per-customer tuning of their system-wide fraud monitoring software. Furthermore, the new hotness (as of a few years ago anyway) in scams is subscription services, where you make a purchase but the vendor signs you up for recurring subscription, and makes impossible to cancel. I don't pretend to know the inner workings of fraud detection algorithms, but it seems reasonable that recurring subscriptions to niche things could trigger this. Without knowing your details, it's hard to guess why they're flagging, and it'd all be speculation anyway, but it's possible that the vendor you're subscribing to has been flagged as fraudulent by other customers - maybe they used dark patterns and tricked people into subscriptions, like many US Republican organizations were doing in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Maybe they make it difficult to unsubscribe, so customers report it as fraud to get the charges to stop. Maybe the payment processor has actually been fraudulently charging customers (it's not uncommon for small businesses to get compromised and have their systems used for fraud-adjacent activities like validating stolen card numbers).
At the end of the day it seems like being moderately annoyed by false positives is a better outcome than being financially ruined by a false negative; your bank is probably tuning their software with that in mind. Even if you're in a financial situation where fraud won't affect you, they likely have customers who aren't so lucky.
If it's a source of that much frustration for you, you always have the option of switching banks, or switching your subscriptions to a different payment method. I highly doubt you'll have much luck getting them to re-tune their entire system just to avoid the inconvenience of a fraud alert, especially in the context of debit card transactions.
You are now the second person who has 'splained at me how banking and credit works, without knowing a single thing about my circumstances or the nature of the account I'm using. You didn't ask any clarifying questions, nor inquire into whether I was seeking advice (which I'm not), before writing all that--including a suggestion to switch banks, which is absurd. What is going on out there that people think this is a good thing to do at someone on the internet?
I was commenting on the lousy nature of their fraud detection algorithm and how it fails to respond appropriately to clear feedback. Regardless of the level of risk involved, a vendor that the customer has stated is safe over a dozen times should not be flagged as potentially fraudulent. Doing so is wasting everyone's time, attention, and resources, and detracts from the purpose of a fraud alert. Alerts don't tend to function when there are too many false positives. If you work at a bank and have insights into why this algorithm might exhibit such poor behavior, I'm all ears. If you want to vent along with me, great. Otherwise what are you doing?

The rail systems in China and Western Europe rely on high population densities but simply don't exist throughout most of the United States. In order to justify such rail systems in the United states, the population density of the country would have to rise by a factor of nearly 10. Actually doing that would bring about a huge ecological disaster, because much of the north American continent is already straining in a number of different critical resources such as water, and the amount of food production we could expect to see from the United States would drop catastrophically which would be a humanitarian disaster for huge swaths of the world.

Mich macht das auch wirklich wütend. In den Nachrichten wird das noch als Erfolg vermerkt. Dank der Grenzkontrollen habe es in den letzten Wochen weniger Geflüchtete gegeben 😡 Die Einheit Europas ist für mich von so einem hohen Wert, ich könnte wirklich heulen, was die Populisten daraus machen.
Gleiche Erfahrung neulich bei der Heimfahrt aus dem Frankreich-Urlaub. Nach Mulhouse 30 min Stau, deutsche Polizisten an der Grenze, und rausgezogen wurde ein Auto mit bulgarischem Kennzeichen (wussten die Sheriffs nicht, dass Bulgarien EU-Mitglied ist?). Absolut bescheuerter Flashback in die 80er Jahre.
Ich bin auch an einer Grenze aufgewachsen - mit dem tiefen Glauben an ein vereintes Europa. Ich bin nicht nur wütend und maßlos enttäuscht - was ich aus meinem Umfeld auch wahrnehme, ist die Rückkehr der Angstzustände bei ehemals Geflüchteten. Diese Menschen, die Jahre oder Jahrzehnte traumatisiert waren, haben feine Antennen für das drohende Unheil.

According to Maan, last night IDF forces arrested him at his home in the village of al-Doha in the Bethlehem area, and during the arrest the forces caused destruction in his house. It was also reported that al-Laham is expected to be brought to the Ofer court this coming Thursday for a hearing on extending his detention. The IDF has not yet provided a response on the matter.

It is worth noting that this is technically illegal in Massachusetts, but basically never enforced. (You get five minutes of idling, less if you're a big truck or someone complains or you're near an air intake.)

In summary: DellaPergola utterly embarrasses himself with this clown-level "critique" of the Gaza Mortality Survey. The arguments presented are without exception mumbo-jumbo, scientifically speaking. In essence, apart from a number of points where he is just flat out methodologically incorrect and fails to spot high school-level errors in his argument (such as plain failing to understand what the Guillot et al. study he tries to cite in his support actually did), he just points to potential sources of *uncertainty* and then assumes, with absolute zero evidence or compelling argument whatsoever, pulling numbers straight out of his arse, that all of these uncertainties must necessarily work in the direction of an overestimate of deaths, while systematically neglecting to discuss any of the sources of sampling bias that do, in fact, *necessarily* contribute to an *under*estimation (chiefly that completely destroyed households can no longer be sampled).
This piece is science-free, embarrassingly illiterate (both statistically and literally in terms of reading comprehension applied to other studies) piece of garbage. DellaPergola outs himself as someone utterly incapable of letting facts get in the way of his racist biases.

FALSE. Again, DellaPergola embarrassingly doesn't even understand how the study proceeded. Respondents were in fact *required* to respond in terms of their original household composition, rendering his whole line of critique moot.
Claim: A stopping rule of 10 households in each sampling unit creates a distortion.
FALSE. Stopping after a given number of interviews WITHIN in a random sampling unit does not by itself undermine “the principle of randomness" at all, nor does selecting an arbitrary adult household member, *because any one of them would be responding with respect to the same household*. DellaPergola does not seem to understand how survey sampling works. The claim that households more likely to have been present and willing to respond are more likely to have experienced a violent death is pulled completely out of thin air, without even pretending to offer an empirical or a priori argument. One could just as easily argue that households with fewer adults (because some have been killed) are more likely to have the surviving adults away from home at a given time.

FALSE. DellaPergola is illiterate, or perhaps more likely, didn't bother to even read as much as the *abstract* of the Guillot et al. paper. What they actually said is that of the 45,936 reported total number of fatalities at the time, they found 64.4% on the refugee register, which, given that the share of refugees in the total population is 65.7%, CONFIRMS THE 45,936 as the refugee+non-refugee total. DellaPergola tries to claim that Guillot reduced the estimate down to the number of fatalities who were *also* refugees. This is a horrendously embarrassing mistake on his part.
"Of these, 75,200 were killed directly by wartime operations, while between 8,000 and 9,000 died from circumstances that aren't directly connected to the army's operations (and all this is on top of the 6,000 to 7,000 who die in an ordinary year)."
FALSE. The 8k-9k are about deaths not from fighting, but from not receiving medical aid for disease etc. The notion that such deaths e.g., from starvation, or because Israel systematically destroyed dialysis centres, “aren't directly connected to the [Israeli] army's operations" is obvious nonsense.
"In other words, the division and redefinition of households as a result of the state of emergency in Gaza may cause the same death to be reported two or three times.”
FALSE. This is *at best* sloppy wording. For the same death to ACTUALLY be double-counted, two people from the same pre-Oct 7 household would have to be among the survey respondents in different households in the current sample. What he probably *meant* was that those deaths have a higher probability of being reported in the sample. This requires a lot of assumptions, such as that households with a death are more likely to have been split apart. Which under normal circumstances might sound like commonsense, because conditional on a violent death in the household, it was certainly exposed to violence that may have caused a split. But since in Gaza *all* households have been displaced, that argument doesn't work very well. Also, all else being equal, having lost an adult household member reduces the remaining size of the household and therefore the possibility for it to split.
The vastly more obvious source of NEGATIVE bias stemming from household structure is that the large number of households where *all* adult members have been killed are systematically excluded from the sample. But of course, DellaPergola doesn't want to talk about *that*.

This represents the number of prisoners from Gaza at a single point in time (Source: jpost.com/israel-news/article-…). DellaPergola seems to miss that what is at stake for comparison with the survey finding is the number imprisoned *at any time* during the survey fieldwork period. Moreover, the number he quotes refers only to ‘unlawful combatants' not *all* prisoners from Gaza, or detainees from Gaza who are held in military camps under conditions of enforced disappearance - unlike the survey question.

FALSE. There is absolute no reason why the factor by which the number of prisoners is misestimated - never mind that he is completely wrong in quantifying that factor, see above - ‘must' be the same as for deaths. For someone criticising the rigour of another study's methodology, “I'm going to take one of their numbers and multiply it with a fudge factor" is one hell of a suggestion for how to "improve" the study…
PCATI's criticism suggested that shutting down IDF detention facilities may have been temporary and they may have returned to heavy use once the military started a new campaign in Gaza in October.
To put the point about the Guillot paper in plain language:
DellaPergola central argument is: The one study (Guillot et al. 2025) that checked the Ministry of Health list of 46k fatalities (at the time) name by name could only confirm 34k of them, so I want to use that number as an anchor for the 'true' number that Spagat et al. failed to correctly replicate.
What Guillot et al. ACTUALLY found was: Roughly two-thirds of Gazans are UNRWA-registered refugees, and we could find around two-thirds of the official deaths, namely 34k, on the refugee register, which matches the population total and confirms that the total number of 46k is approximately correct.
Note that this is not buried deep inside the Guillot et al. paper. It's right there literally in the abstract, proving that DellaPergola is either blinded by bias, incompetent, or wilfully misrepresenting that study.
I saw that but to be fair DellaPegola sort of indicates it's a number verified against UNRWA's data ("including lists of refugees entitled to UN assistance"). This also BTW seem to support Hamas' own data..., contracting his claims their numbers can't be trusted.
But regardless, it's clear that DellaPergola doesn't engage with evidence in the Lancet studies documenting systematic under-reporting.
He draws the exact opposite conclusion from what Guillot et al. actually said, so we don't really have to be "fair" and give points for vaguely mentioning UNRWA data in an act of obfuscation.
@bifouba I would also comment on his reliance on #IDF evacuation warnings as a factor in reducing casualties (FFS, this is pure propaganda at this stage) is contradicted by the fact that we saw time and again that evacuated concentrated populations moved to targeted areas created higher casualty rates rather than lower ones, even before the GHF aid distribution death traps.

in reply to Anthony • • •Stop using your debit card for purchases. Debit is for bank drafts only. If a fraudulent charge is issued, it might take your bank the full two-weeks grace period to restore your funds and you might miss an important payment.
Use credit cards for all payments always. If a fraudulent charge is issued on your credit card, it is the bank's money, not yours, that is stolen. They've got a fraud department to protect their assets and aid in prosecuting fraud. During that time your credited money for that fraudulent charge is restored.
I only ever use my debit card at the bank for cash withdrawals.
Edit: I have several cards that I pick through based on the purchase. Costco for fuel, a travel card for all restaurants and travel, and a cash back card for online shit. And I use cash for local businesses now because their cc fees are high and I appreciate having a local economy that isn't just national chains.

in reply to Anthony • • •I don't know where you live, but in the US the relevant consumer protection laws for credit vs debit vary pretty dramatically. You're far more protected using a credit card than a debit card for purchases. With debit card fraud, they can drain your account of money you actually have; with credit, they're just borrowing money in your name - you haven't lost anything until you actually make a credit card payment. Furthermore, the maximum liability for credit fraud is $50; the maximum for debit fraud can be the total amount stolen, depending on when you report it.
I suspect your bank has their fraud settings tuned so high because debit card fraud can be catastrophic. If someone fraudulently uses your debit card fraudulently and drains your account, you may start bouncing checks, lose your ability to buy food or pay rent/mortgage, etc. Those things carry fees, fines, and long-lasting consequences that, even after the fraudulent money is returned (which can take a long time), you'll still have to deal with. It's especially risky for people who have limited funds - a few bounced check or late fees can be the difference between staying afloat and sinking into an inescapable debt cycle.
Additionally, if you fail to notice a fraudulent transaction for more than 60 days on a debit card, you lose any legal protection; that money is gone unless your bank decides out of the goodness of its heart to reimburse you. I don't know any banks that would do that.
I highly doubt they have per-customer tuning of their system-wide fraud monitoring software. Furthermore, the new hotness (as of a few years ago anyway) in scams is subscription services, where you make a purchase but the vendor signs you up for recurring subscription, and makes impossible to cancel. I don't pretend to know the inner workings of fraud detection algorithms, but it seems reasonable that recurring subscriptions to niche things could trigger this. Without knowing your details, it's hard to guess why they're flagging, and it'd all be speculation anyway, but it's possible that the vendor you're subscribing to has been flagged as fraudulent by other customers - maybe they used dark patterns and tricked people into subscriptions, like many US Republican organizations were doing in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Maybe they make it difficult to unsubscribe, so customers report it as fraud to get the charges to stop. Maybe the payment processor has actually been fraudulently charging customers (it's not uncommon for small businesses to get compromised and have their systems used for fraud-adjacent activities like validating stolen card numbers).
At the end of the day it seems like being moderately annoyed by false positives is a better outcome than being financially ruined by a false negative; your bank is probably tuning their software with that in mind. Even if you're in a financial situation where fraud won't affect you, they likely have customers who aren't so lucky.
If it's a source of that much frustration for you, you always have the option of switching banks, or switching your subscriptions to a different payment method. I highly doubt you'll have much luck getting them to re-tune their entire system just to avoid the inconvenience of a fraud alert, especially in the context of debit card transactions.

I was commenting on the lousy nature of their fraud detection algorithm and how it fails to respond appropriately to clear feedback. Regardless of the level of risk involved, a vendor that the customer has stated is safe over a dozen times should not be flagged as potentially fraudulent. Doing so is wasting everyone's time, attention, and resources, and detracts from the purpose of a fraud alert. Alerts don't tend to function when there are too many false positives. If you work at a bank and have insights into why this algorithm might exhibit such poor behavior, I'm all ears. If you want to vent along with me, great. Otherwise what are you doing?
