To anyone still wondering if New York Times can disgrace itself even more than it already has in recent years, Dan Froomkin has an answer:
"The sad fact is that there is nothing terribly out of character about the New York Times’s decision to publish a deceptive hit piece about New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, based on hacked data supplied by a noted eugenicist to whom they granted anonymity."

"And you can trace it back to the very top: to editor Joe Kahn and his boss, publisher A.G. Sulzberger. …
Parts of the Times operation remain brilliant, most notably its investigative journalism and Cooking."

Froomkin is absolutely right. This ugly hit piece which raises major ethical questions about how NYT does journalism is exactly what I'd have expected from NYT — and why I read it only when other sources I respect cite some of its few worthwhile reports.

Think about that for a moment. The Times will protect the anonymity of a white supremacist, but will silence their own Black columnist for accurately identifying him."

in reply to William Lindsey • • •"[The Zohran Mamdani story] came to the Times due to a widespread hack into Columbia’s databases, transmitted to the paper through an intermediary who was given anonymity by the paper. That source turns out to be Jordan Lasker, who – as the Guardian has reported – is a well-known and much criticized ''eugenicist', AKA white supremacist."
