How did “imported antisemitism”, a far-right anti-immigrant buzz phrase, make it into the political mainstream? After all, Germans didn’t exactly need to import antisemitism. But this is the way we see it in Germany: if you haven’t committed genocide you can’t properly claim to be against it. I’m not making this up. You couldn’t make it up. Indeed, the political scientist Esra Özyürek discusses the belief in her excellent 2023 book Subcontractors of Guilt.
The thinking behind it is that because of our history, we teach the next generation to make sure it will never happen again. At school we studied the Holocaust every year. We didn’t learn to analyse antisemitism, but we learned to be very wary of it – or as the writer Max Czollek put it: “Today Germans know mainly one thing about Jews: that they killed them.”
Immigrants to Germany need to know a bit more than that if they want to become German citizens. They need to know when the state of Israel was founded, and who is allowed to become a member of one of the 40 Maccabi sports clubs. If you’re not born in Germany you have to prove you’re not antisemitic by learning facts about Jewish people.
But even if you were born here, like me, the statistics still refer to you as an immigrant if one of your parents comes from a different country. And as such, you are viewed with suspicion when it comes to the antisemitism you may have “imported”. During the last election, Merz suggested revoking German citizenship from dual nationals if they committed a crime. When asked if that meant, for example, getting on a bus without a ticket, he made it clear it related to antisemitism.
However, antisemitism is not a criminal offence in German law, so we see it everywhere. Jews have been arrested for holding up signs reading “Jews against genocide”. An Irish protester was arrested in Berlin for speaking Irish at a demonstration for Palestine because the authorities did not have an Irish translator present to check if they were “importing antisemitism” too. This has gone so far that the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner has reprimanded Germany for criminalising protest against the war in Gaza – including curtailing the use of Arabic at protests. In the end Merz didn’t get his way, but he drove the message home: Germans like me with foreign heritage are Germans on trial.

i usually have a little burst of computer productivity in the morning then it drops off a cliff, so that by the evening, i'll sit there and stare at the screen and take 1/2 hour do something that i could do in 2 minutes the next morning
shop work is a bit more consistent. if i'm actively doing something in the shop, i'm actually doing it, not sitting and staring at it aimlessly. then when i get tired i just stop

AI isn't taking jobs. That is some weird thing people say but that facts don't back it up. Jobs are up, not down. Most employment in the United States isn't in large companies. It's small business.

AI has taken over most phone support systems these days, it's almost impossible to speak to a human anymore, because they've downsized the staff and have AI do practically everything.

Yes, voice systems have been around for quite a while. But there was almost always an easy way to bypass all that and talk to a human. It was just as simple as dialing 0, and there wasn't hardly much wait time, they tended to have more actual people operating the phones back then.
And you don't go to the Dollar Store to socialize with people, you go to save money when buying toilet paper and cat food or whatever the hell. But hey, you do you, if you got enough money to piss away just to avoid low income people, then by all means piss away and live in your little bubble. The rest of us tend to look for ways to save money when we can.

It seems to me that the ability to read source code will become more and more important over time. This skill is rarely taught, as far as I can tell. The learning situation resembles that for natural language: knowing how to produce/generate text does not immediately translate into the ability to read it, let alone read it well.

I wouldn't be able to teach you how to read source code on Mastodon any more than I could teach you how to read Greek. It's a skill that takes sustained effort and practice.
From what you've said it sounds like it'd help to diagram the code. Sequence diagrams can be helpful in understanding the logic; I like to start with those. Start with some simple flow and build up from there. I don't know how long you've been working with that codebase but I wouldn't rely on memory alone till you're quite familiar with it.

the RSX body is ok now, in that it's not going to rust apart, and the door closes and everything seals properly. i just don't like all the dents and crap making it look trashy.

I used it with pleasure for a while. It was the only RPM based distribution I used. My heart is always on the Debian side. FreeBSD and OpenBSD operating systems have also won my heart in the meantime.
I used Mandrake 8.0 for a while, but the next release I tried, 8.2 was the buggiest Linux distribution release I've ever encountered. So I started looking for alternatives, and switched to Slackware.
I used Mandrake/Mandriva as the first Linux distribution beyond pure experimentation starting from 2004. The producer's problems led me to install Ubuntu on the desktop I bought in 2010, but I have some nice memories of Mandrake/Mandriva.
Mandrake: I really REALLY wanted to use this distro but I never got it to work on my old Siemens Amilo A notebook. So frustrating. My redemption came unexpectedly in a brown form in 2004, when Ubuntu finally enabled me to switch for good.
I have worked for 6 years (2000-2006) at MandrakeSoft/Mandriva in Paris, and my very first task was switching from LPD (Line Printer Daemon, line printers are kind of high-speed electric typewriters) to #CUPS and so Mandrake was the first distro with CUPS and easy printing.
So whatever Mandrake version was released in fall of 2000 was the first ever Linux distro on the world which used CUPS.
