We point out some paragraphs of this letter:
“Since Saturday, June 21, I have started eating again, the hunger strike is suspended, the heat, the humidity were playing tricks on me, in fact I had moments of spinning in my head, so much so that I had to lean against the wall… At a certain point I was bleeding from my nose, the pressure was dancing in my body, and I was going through bad times. Granny did not want anyone getting her cleaned up this morning and scratched a nurse. When I got there the nurse asked me to help with Granny's afternoon ablutions because "she's always a lot nicer when you're around."
So I did. And Granny was an angel. And then I sat down and hot flashed so hard my glasses fogged up. 😂
Granny's not mean, she's frightened. Her hearing is REALLY bad (she worked in a printing department before OSHA and ear protection) and a lot of the nurses have accents, so when they come in and talk to her she generally has a hard time understanding them.
I talk to her loudly and slowly in a Harnett accent so she knows what's going on even if she doesn't know who I am anymore.
My sister is a retired nurse (psych ward, pre-natal, head trauma, to name a few). I have heard her talk about patients and similar to how you approach your situation. She worked as a patient advocate as well at one time. I think you have the heart of a nurse. Effective nursing is understanding the patient on a level they don't necessarily teach in school and staying close to family members for needed insight as well.
@Nead I don't know if I have the heart of a nurse or not but I do know that whatever she needs to get done will get done. If it's easier to have me there when she gets cleaned up, I'll be there.
I just want to make things as easy for her as possible. If I had a million dollars I would spend it all on a fleet of nurses to take care of her in her home and a dog person to bring her a different dog to visit every day

Today I visited Drum Castle, via the same bus route which took me to Crathes Castle the day before. Drum is from a Gaelic word which means ridge. I previously visited Dundrum castle in Ireland which means Fort of the Ridge from the same Gaelic derivation.
Drum castle lies within what was once a royal forest/park and the lands were granted by charter to William de Irwyn by Robert the Bruce in 1323 for long and faithful service, including some very low points for the Bruce, in which he was down to only a handful of supporters. Irwyn apparently stood watch over the sleeping Bruce one night while they hid within a thicket of holly while the English hunted for him nearby.
Clan Irvine has adopted the prickly holly leaf as it's symbol ever since and it features in their coats of arms along with the motto "SUB SOLE SUB UMBRA VIRENS" which may mean something like flourishing in both sun and shade, a possible reference to the good and bad circumstances under which they stood by Robert the Bruce.
The oldest part of Drum castle is a tower which has a decent claim to being one of the oldest tower houses in Scotland. It isn't known precisely when it was built, but it has some marks of being constructed as more of a royal hunting lodge than a place of full time in-habitation for a lord. If so, it would likely pre-date the charter of 1323.
It also has some design marks and qualities which suggests the designer may have been the Kings Master Mason, Richard Cementarius, so it could even be 13th century rather than eartly 14th century. Either way, it is very old for a tower house and is more of a small keep in many respects.
There was probably at least a Barmkin wall and other structures associated with the castle for the first three centuries of its use under the Irvines, but there are no traces of those above ground, although I understand there has been some geo-phys surveys of the ground which have found traces. The Irvines would have needed a strongly defensive structure beyond simply the tower, as they frequently feuded with another clan, the Keiths and also took an active role in other military conflicts.
Their conflicts with the Keiths resulted in the Battle of Drumoak in 1402, in which the Irvines pursued an invading Keith force back across the Dee and slew many of them in the river itself. The 3rd Lord of Drum was also very active in fighting in France. And, back in Scotland, during the Battle of Harlaw, he fought a famous duel against Red Hector of the Battles, the 2nd lord of Duart Castle (remember Duart?) in which they both died of their wounds.
The 3rd Lord Irvine of Drum's martial exploits were so famous that the next DOZEN Irvine lords were all named Alexander after him. Talk about a hard legacy to live up to, right?
By the 1600's, though, life was good and a little less conflict prone, so the Irvines of Drum built a large addition to the castle, building a range of luxurious accommodations in 1619. There were later modifications in Victorian times, so most of what you see of the castle today beyond the Old Tower is 1619 or newer.
The Irvines backed the royalists during the War of the Three Kingdoms period, which was problematic for them as the area in which their castle stood was mostly on the other side. This lead to Drum getting sacked/occupied on three occasions.
The castle doesn't appear to have been damaged too heavily during these events, or the damage is hidden under layers of harling and plaster, but the castle was looted. Two of the laird's sons who fought on the royalist side were imprisoned and one of them died in prison at either Edinburgh castle or the Tolbooth.
The castle appears to have been ransacked again, this time by royalists under the Marquis of Montrose, despite the Irvines having fought on the royalist side. Just a whole lot of looting and sacking going on in those days, I guess.
During the Jacobite period, they stood consistently with the Jacobites (on the losing side) and there is much art in the castle to that effect, including portraits of King Charles, Bonnie Prince Charlie and another one of Charlie's brother, that is mislabeled as being him. This also didn't go so well for the Irvines and their fortunes didn't improve much until after the end of this period.
The interiors are mostly of the Victorian era and remained so right up until the castle and most of it's contents were sold to the National Trust in 1975. For those counting, that means Clan Irvine were the Lairds of Drum for over 650 years, an impressive length of occupation by a single family.
The tower has three primary chambers inside it, all of which are stone vaulted. The walls are 10+ feet thick. The first floor great hall was turned into a lavish wood paneled library with coats of arms on the ceiling in Jacobean times. There is a chamber behind the book cases located within the stone wall thickness that contains a privy and a small room, in which it is believed the Laird was hidden off and on for some three years after the Battle of Culloden before heading to exile in France.
The secret chambers were rediscovered behind blocked up windows, during conservation work. It was decided to break down these windows a bit to see what was inside and then stick camera inside. You can read about this here:
There is a storage area beneath the library and an even larger hall above it, but the access for both is via an intramural spiral stair to which there is no longer access to inside the castle. The later day Irvines didn't seem to need convenient access to theses spaces. Only the library is accessible directly from the Jacobean wing.
To access the other spaces, there is a external stair connected to the tower which leads to a doorway into some sort of space which provides access to the spiral stair.
There are apparently protected bats now nesting in the upper hall and they're not allowed by law to eject them and reclaim the space. So, all you get is this picture from an info panel.
The upper hall is strongly peaked, like the Brig o' Balgownie, designed by Richard Cementarius, which is one of the reasons they think he designed Drum's old tower as well.
His design is not without it's faults. All the tower's windows are extremely narrow and don't let in much light, while there is also only one long slit window at ground height which would have been useful for arrow defense. The battlements have minimal drainage, which has been extremely problematic, as water tends to pool on the roof and find it's way inside through the least crack or flaw. Most tower houses have a ton of weeps/drains to keep this from happening.
Also, the guy provided a privy on the battlements level without providing a chute, so you poop up there and it just drips down the side of the castle. Ew! I guess if you're up there with your bow and arrows to fight off an army, you've got bigger worries.
The White Tower of the Tower of London had similar issues and solved them in similar fashion, just put your poop smears on the side of the tower your guests won't see. So yeah, coming up the River Thames you would see the white washed enormous tower and not the brown streaks on the far side.
They did get around to fixing that problem with the White Tower eventually, but not so with the Old Tower of Drum.
What is kinda amazing about Drum is that the tower has remained so unaltered. Outside of the entrance passage they cut into the tower from the Jacobean wing and the big window they put into the library (which really shows off the thickness of the walls), the Old Tower of Drum is structurally pretty much the same as it has been for how long? 700+ years? Nobody knows for sure.
Random castle bits time. Here is the chapel right outside the Jacobean wing. It's on the site of a still earlier church. Remember, Irvings have been getting buried here for seven centuries.
There is a burial yard behind the chapel. I think this is the most recent Laird of Drum to pass away, the 26th.
One interesting thing, is Afaik, you can only be a baron so long as you still hold some of the land that is in your original grant. There is still a Laird of Drum, but the land has been sold to the National Trust. So, how does that work, then?
I just had to ask the guide and he said the NT gave back a patch of the land to the Irvings so that they can still claim their title.
There is a copy of the grant from Robert the Bruce along with a modern English translation which can be found in the entrance hall off the courtyard where you buy your tickets.
Before I get too off track from the graveyard, did I mention they have a pet cemetary? They have a pet cemetary! Torty the Tortoise was 149 years young when it died. I wonder how many Lairds it outlived.
Back to random castle bits. So, the Victorians added onto the Jacobean wing a bit, giving it a more modern face, a grand staircase and some outer hallways. This means that some of the outer faces of the Jacobean wing are inside the hall of the modern castle.
There is this Yett, which would have been the original servant's entrance, now inside the Victorian lobby where you buy your tickets. There would have been a wooden door in front of it, now absent, but you can still see the hinge pins for the door, painted white.
These windows would have been on the outside of the Jacobean castle, now they're inside a hall, along with the stairway. I don't know about you, but iron bars are kind of weird for interior decor, don't you think?

I find it funny how in fiction hubris is a high-brow way of saying “you scienced way too hard and now the universe is going to punish you for Defying The Natural Order™” with the implication that hubris is some kind of character flaw: the character flaw of trying to make things better with science
but in actual Greek myths hubris basically just means “you proved you were better than a god at something and all of the gods are massive raging narcissists so now they’re going to curse you about it”
