You just right click a tab and add it to a group, or create a new one with spcific name and color code. Fine, that doesn't appear unreasonable and remains optional for the use to configure. Now mozilla is coming out with automatic grouping of tabs, based on what criteria, Ai?

Heading out shortly to see a castle. Today's castle is small, but interesting, and I expect to be taking lots of pictures for comparison of features to some other castles I've visited or plan to visit. The way certain features are implemented as well as mason's marks can tell you a lot about who designed and built a castle and "Keeping up with the Joneses" applies to castle owners as well. This one probably made a lot of neighbors jealous. I'll leave you with that teaser. Pics this evening.
I've visited two castles today and am waiting for a bus, so have a little time to start my writeup. The first castle I visited today is Tolquhon castle. It was built by William Forbes, the 7th Laird of those lands over a little more than five years. We actually have the specific dates because he was so proud of his fine new castle that he affixed an plaque to the side of the building.
It's a little hard to read but reads "AL THIS WARKE EXCEP THE AULD TOWR WAS BEGUN BE WILLIAM FORBES 15 APRIL 1584 AND ENDIT BE HIM 20 OCTOBER 1589." People have been taking boastful pride in their building projects forever and you see this all over significant Roman structures.
The old tower he references is called Preston's tower and was probably built around 1420. It's the ruinous rectangular tower on the left hand side of the castle. Most of the upper stories are gone, but a little bit up to the corbels remains. It has a partially intact vaulted basement and a number of slit type arrow loops still survive.
Everything else is new and oriented around gun powder weapons. The structure isn't very thick walled, and so wouldn't have held up to cannons, but the ornate shot holes are well positioned to cover critical areas and are functional. Lower windows are small and couldn't be crawled into and upper windows all have iron bars. There was an outer courtyard with the remains of square towers at the corners and an iron gate in the center.
The gatehouse has a number of armorial panels as well as some sculptures. This would have made for a very fancy frontage for the castle's visitors back in the day.
Inside is equally fancy, with ranges of guest lodgings, a well equipped kitchen and wine cellar (each with their own servants staircases), a bake house, brew house, a long grand gallery and a great hall with the lord's bed chambers just off it.
The upstairs/downstairs effect was in full force at this castle, with a grand staircase reserved for the Laird and guests with servants beneath scuttling in and out through their own stairs so as not to get in the way. We're not quite to the era of bell pulls here, but things are headed in that direction.
The great hall has an enormous fireplace with a side niche which might have been used for keeping food warm, and the flooring is very interesting and fancy as well.
The floor is constructed of flat flagstones in a pattern which tesselates to cover the hall in about as flat a stone floor as you could get in that era.
There are a bunch of bread ovens scattered around the castle. The main bank of them, in the bakehouse are very well preserved (except for the swallows using them for nests. The back of the ovens is next to the pit prison, which you were lowered into from above through a hole in what was probably the Stewart's bed chamber. I imagine a prisoner might get uncomfortably warm when the ovens were going.
William Forbes and his wife Elizabeth Gordon didn't get to enjoy the castle long. He would die in 1596 after being Laird for some fifty years. He put some thought into his he wanted to be remembered and endowed a hospital in Tarves, nearby and also designed an ornate tomb for him and his wife, which is largely intact today. I had just enough time to see it. It has both of their coats of arms and mottos.
I'm not sure if there was ever an effigy in the niche of the tomb or if there was ever intended to be. The date under William's arms is 1589, well before this death. Maybe his descendants didn't decide to spring for one. William and Elizabeth are both there on the monument, though. It can be a bit difficult to see them as you have to shoot at a bad angle through dirty glass, but these are them, the first people to live in the castle they built.
Their descendants continued to live there until the early 1700's, when the family had to move out after losing their shirts, like much of the Scottish nobility, in the Darien Scheme, an attempt to establish a colony of what is now Panama. Over 20% of the money in Scotland was lost to this venture.
@rjohnston Yup, this would qualify as an Oubliette, I think, as the only entry/exit is the trap door in the ceiling. I've seen a number this trip.
Cawdor Castle has one which wasn't even known about in modern times until they started to repoint the stonework and hit a void with a crowbar. The entrance is in a very well appointed living room next to a window which used to be the tower's main door.
@rjohnston The one in the great hall is definitely a niche, so keeping things warm and dry makes sense to me. It isn't a bread oven, which you sometimes see in the sides of large kitchen fireplaces. The castle has one of those too.

I would like to learn more about castle drains, slops, weeps and water catchment. I do notice these things and take pictures, but rarely talk about them in my castle writeups.

Verify identity using another method of communication before providing sensitive data, codes, money, etc.
If they call, you can chat, email, DM -- any other method of communication to verify that person is who they say they are FIRST.

I was talking to my friend TC, and he said something that I want to share with you:
"Sometimes people only need the slightest of uplifts. In a way, it's very similar to a paddling concept using traditional Greenland paddles. There's a guy in BC, Paulo Ouelet, who teaches traditional paddling. He talks about how the buoyancy of a Greenland paddle can give you the support you need. The way he demonstrates how *little* you need to be stable is this:
Stand on one foot, on your toes. It's not easy. You wobble around, and maybe even have to put your other foot down to stabilize yourself. Now... have a friend hold out the index finger of *one* hand, and put your index finger on theirs. Suddenly, you can stand almost perfectly still on the toes of one foot.
I like to think life can be much the same. Sometimes all we need is just one *teeeeeeny* bit of help to regain ourselves and be okay."
A friend's help can be as simple as a few words of support, but it can be enough to see you through. Remember this the next time you see someone struggling, and remember: you can be a stabilizing force for them, just by being there.
