"The Intercept found a gulf between how the Colquitt County Sheriffโ€™s Office presented the operation to the public and what actually happened. Rather than serving existing criminal warrants, local authorities conducted traffic stops, arrested people without licenses, and sent information about the detainees to DHS. Only then, after the men were in custody, did the federal agency issue warrants for their arrest."

Iโ€™m going to tell you a story that represents my best explanation for how America has fallen into this depressing condition. Itโ€™s a story that draws heavily on the thinking of Alasdair MacIntyre, the great moral philosopher, who died in May at age 94. Itโ€™s a story that tries to explain how Western culture evolved to the point where millions of usโ€”and not just Republicans and Trump supportersโ€”have been left unable to make basic moral judgments.

Why Do So Many People Think That Trump Is Good?

in reply to Kenny Chaffin

I think I understand you, but that's not what the essay seems to be talking about.

The author seems to be trying to suggest that the Enlightenment brought about a form of secular thinking that "thinned" morality to the point where people don't have a strong enough guiding belief system to prevent them from doing bad things.

However it seems to me the average MAGA person is a "fundamental" "Christian" of some sort. (I use quotes around those words because there are many variations and they may not all mean the same thing as traditional Christianity). They claim to have extremely strong "god"-linked morals, right down to many being "right-to-lifers" and bible pushers.

Meanwhile what seems to have actually happened in the USA is that all these "fundamental" "Christian" MAGA people have chosen to ignore each and every immoral thing (based on their own "Christian" morals!) that Trump has done and continues to do.

So I think the essay misses the mark entirely. It doesn't answer the question at all.

I don't even think that they believe "Trump is Good" -- they just like the smarmy arse, as if he is one of them.

Now part of that is probably due to what some call "celebrity culture", which may actually be a fallout of the distant past Enlightenment.

How it's all connected, I'm not sure, but the essay doesn't answer that either.

This isnโ€™t war. Itโ€™s a massacre.

Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are crammed into a fraction of their land, living with โ€œless personal space than detainees at Guantanamo,โ€ according to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor.

Fascism comes in many flavors; the German Nazi version of the 1930s is the worse.

Why would anyone expect that the American version of fascism would unfold like the German or the Italian? It is unfolding more like Austria under Orban as the Republican Party promised.

Smith makes the utilitarian argument that it's bad for social justice to call our system fascism. That may be true but it would be more beneficial to hear how whatever is happening to our country now can be reversed and defeated.

I love how smart these AI technologies are. They understand that "bigger" for cities can be ambiguous, refer to either the population or the area. It's also great that it's showing the sources in the upper corner, and displaying the basic facts.

Small minus on consistency and correctness, but other than that, really a great answer.

This is a good post. She makes a lot of good points and clarifies some important things. The part about the actual translation of the term unveiled some details that I wasn't aware of previously.

Some things were off, however. The notion that legal interpretation 'evolves' isn't quite right. It is more the case that it adapts.

Unfortunately, she does make a significant error in stating that the Shari'ah and Islam are not a threat to democracy (Liberal Democracy, Republicanism, etc.). It most assuredly is. So in this, I agree more with Islam's apparent 'detractors' or critics than I do with the presenter here.

Overall, though, she does quite an adroit job of revealing Islamic jurisprudence and its ethical framework to those who are interested in the topic.

I installed the latest postmarketOS and found it to be missing, which is why I asked in this release announcement.

I'm guessing that there has been no changes in this release to improve this?

I also really disliked not having navigation buttons on screen, so while discoverability may be forced, it seems inferior to having buttons in my experience.

On screen buttons are predictable and accessible - gesture navigation is invisible and hard to understand, given no affordances.

in reply to Guido Gรผnther

The tour is a good explainer that IMHO should be shipped in full in every distribution (e.g., IIRC @postmarketOS ship a shorter, customized one). But the accessibility issues for people with sensoric or motoric difficulties remain. IIRC, old Phosh was all taps to get to the launcher/multitasking view (swipe up) or quick actions/notifications (swipe down) and if we attach a pointing device, we still have the close buttons on apps. This old way could be all @yoasif wants. @phosh
in reply to 1peter10

@postmarketOS I've seen many people praise the early Phosh interface for everything being an obvious tap away and that there's no need for performing swipes to use it. At the same time lots of people (perhaps more) complained that they couldn't swipe ๐Ÿซฉ
Swipes solve some issues and we're in much better place now than we were without them, but I think it may be worth contemplating on how to bring back the possibility of swipeless operation, even if behind an a11y flag
in reply to 1peter10

That said, I recognize that one can't just bring the old stuff back (and come up with a visual design that makes clear what to tap for what just like that), and that an additional mode also requires extra testing on every change/release etc. Still, it's IMHO really worth considering (accessibility always is!), and it may even get some use by people who don't strictly need it (just like high contrast themes do). I don't want to put stuff on your plate or make demands though! @yoasif @phosh

I had Windows on a 4 Tb hard drive in my old Mac Pro and I could use only 2 Tb โ€” because Apple's early EFI can't boot Windows natively, only with BIOS emulation โ€” so MBR it is. Having half the space wasted is very annoying. And yes, there is GPT with protective MBR, but in practice this configuration is very frail โ€” Windows updates could ruin the partition table, they usually create a recovery partition at the end of the disk so if system in your main partition stops booting you could boot off the recovery one. And software updates update not only the system in the main partition, but the recovery one too and if that partition isn't big enough to accommodate the updateโ€ฆ A new bigger one gets created! ๐Ÿคฆ
I had to keep the partition table backed up and a few times I had to restore it by hand because the newly created recovery partition wasn't in the backed up GPT table ๐Ÿ˜ฉ
in reply to mirabilos

It's not as bad when it works. I really enjoy being able to just copy the bootloader as EFI binary โ€” as a file, instead of having to write into a specially defined sector, being able to have multiple binaries in one partition, so I can boot several operating systems without having to use a separate bootloader for it โ€” yes, booting particular operating systems requires their own extras, but it can all happily reside in the same small partition.
in reply to mirabilos

I was messing with x86 real mode assembly programming in my teens, but I've never went that far. And when it comes to MBRโ€ฆ I once wanted to change the order of partitions in the partition table โ€” most don't care what order they have, so I didn't know where to look, nowadays you can easily export the partition table with gdisk, edit the file and recreate the partition table with different order โ€” again with gdisk. But at the time partitioning software was very limited so I wrote a C program that rearranged them ๐Ÿ˜…

It's not that it's complex, but why bother? Sure, UEFI has its shortcomings, but having this higher level of abstraction โ€” at least having a concept of partitions at this boot stage, being able to work with filesโ€ฆ I think it's good!

I recently received an email that at first glance appeared to be a well-crafted phishing message, warning that my Microsoft Entra ID was going to expire in a month if I didn't make a purchase. The only piece of information in the message was my supposed Entra ID.

After checking with Microsoft it appears this automated message is legitimate, and it is in reference to a Microsoft Teams trial account I created for a day and then abandoned. But apart from the Entra ID, which isn't mentioned in any prior communications from Microsoft, there is zero context for the user.

How hard would it be for Microsoft to include just a tiny bit more information in each message? Like, "Hey, this message is about an account created 5 years ago, for Teams" or something. Otherwise these marketing messages train users to fall for phishing scams.

After years of dominance in #ESETโ€™s top #infostealer statistics, the era of #AgentTesla has come to an end. It finished H1 2025 in fourth place, its numbers having decreased by 57%. The reason? It is no longer under active development.
The threat actors behind Agent Tesla have reportedly lost access to the servers with the malwareโ€™s source code. A successor appeared almost immediately โ€“ another #MaaS threat, known as #SnakeStealer or #SnakeKeylogger, has claimed the number one spot.
Recommended as a suitable replacement directly in Agent Teslaโ€™s Telegram channel, SnakeStealer now takes up almost a fifth of all infostealer detections registered by ESET telemetry. Between H2 2024 and H1 2025, its detections more than doubled.
