Early in my career, I built a system for a customer that made it easier for their university to automate sending invitations and login instructions for new users.
I missed some key differences in some user environments that weren't covered in my testing, and I ended up sending thousands of malformed login invitations... twice.
If I'd been forced to write separate login invitations manually for each segment of the user population, I would also have been forced to do more fine grained testing and take more care to ensure it works and think through the details.
But as a starryeyed new engineer, I was too excited by the idea of automating the whole thing in one go. I made it too easy to distribute the impact of my mistake, and I wasted the time of thousands of users.
Back in the waterfall days we reckoned about 40% design, 10% coding, 50% testing. Which did on occasion result in nervous clients who observed that we were a third of the way through the timescale and hadn't written any code yet ... but we did usually deliver to spec on time and on budget.
not too long ago, elsewhere, I read a post by someone who had vibe coded an app of 60k lines of code, and was looking for a professional developer to "fix the last bugs [they] couldn't fix with genAI". They had a couple hundred bucks to put on the table. I'd be surprised if their app could not be made with less than 10k locs...
I think it's an immature attitude borne out of people resigned to working within languages and frameworks that force a lot of 'boilerplate' on them, who haven't had a chance to develop the understanding that there are better approaches (more expressive *durable* abstractions, etc)
Proponents of the tool seem to extrapolate from the relative increase in ability of these tools in the past 6 months (mostly due to more cleverly wiring them up to the ability to use external tools and edit files) that in another 6 months they'll solve significant issues of design ... and I'm not seeing evidence of it

Code is a confusing engineering object for our human brains. It is a bit like building a bridge or a kitchen utensil: itโs an object without a mind, it has a function, it can fail, people do unexpected things with it. But it can also feel a bit like a person given a task: it has behavior, it โขdecidesโข, it โขactsโข, it โขcausesโข.
(All arguably true of a bridge too, but most of us donโt think of bridges that way!)
The lay understanding of code leans heavily on the idea that programs are anthropomorphic, little homunculi with agency.
Where that understanding goes wrong is that humans have perception and experience and common sense. And yes, people are foolish and fallible โ but ultimately humans are the adaptable element of complex systems[1], and when we design processes involving humans, we always, always lean on that adaptability.
If we say โwalk out the door,โ humans generally will not just walk face first into the wall just because the door is behind it.
So much of the work we do in software is about asking not just what โขdoesโข happen when the developer runs their own code, but what โขcouldโข happen when the code is running in the wild, out from under the watchful eye of its author.
Thatโs really, really hard. Itโs a large portion of what makes development time-consuming and labor-intensive.
And itโs something you can only do if you actually understand what the code โขmeansโข โ both to the computers and to the humans.
A lot of the design work that goes into programming languages and tools is about prompting developers to โขthink about meaningโข: tests, types, scope, compile errors, runtime errors โ all about โขpreventing code from runningโข in the presence of an expectation/reality mismatch.
Iโm always on high alert for tools that promise to speed development by letting developers skip the thinking.
This AI vibe coding (โkids should not go into coding as a careerโ) era reminds me of that guidance counsellor in high school (circa 1995) warning us to stay away from the computer industry at large b/c he read an article about Moorseโs law (I assume) and figured they can only make these darn computers run so fast and then thatโs itโฆ this was before any true adoption of the Internet.
Hands on coding experience as youโre describing would dispense all the theory.

Thatโs not necessarily the only way to use machine learning to assist coding. It is, however, one of the โmagic diet pillsโ promises at the heart of the current hype bubble.
Whatever the dev tools of the future look like, until we have Lieutenant-Commander Data, difficult human thought will be at the heart of writing code.
In a saner environment, weโd be having a reasonable conversation about that: in what ways, if any, can a machine that repeats contextual patterns with no sense of meaning augment humans thinking through tricky things? In ways can it mislead? When, if ever, is it worth the tradeoffs? the resource costs? etc etc.
Right now, the off-the-charts money and hype make that reasonable conversation impossible except perhaps in hushed corners. (Please do not have that argument in my replies. I am tired.)
