Are you right wing? Wait - conservative? Or are you a liberal? Are you a "leftist" - or is that a liberal? Are centrists liberals? Or are they right wing? Or conservative?
Your answer may determine what other people assume you want, based on their *own* biases, no matter what else you tell them explicitly.
This is a huge frustration for me: I find myself having to deny the "liberal" beliefs that people attribute to me one-by-one, when I try to have a conversation about something

The combination of fuzzy definitions + strong biases makes political conversations fraught for basically *anyone* on the real left.
And that's because "left" and "right" are the most inane and meaningless words for one of the most important and complex aspects of human society that anyone could have picked.
*Any time* language has been manipulated to the point where it ceases to have clarity of meaning, you can find powerful people behind the manipulation.
That's because *they* hold the reigns of our media establishment, and can define and redefine words as they choose - especially if those words have already been shaken loose from any common meaning.
This is most obvious in the "liberal" or "left" debacle that routinely bamboozles otherwise smart people, but has been used for decades to conflate "conservative" and "far right" as well.
Other examples include things like "terrorist" and "criminal", which are so flagrantly used as to have no real meaning beyond "bad because we said so".
You can see it with the political class' selective use of "protester" and "rioter", as though these two words have no substantive difference in meaning.

Eles contam com outras pessoas para suporte técnico, e os ambientes desktop livres não mudam esse fato. A maior diferença é que oferecem mais opções e liberdades, dando a impressão de uma escolha mais difícil. Contudo, independentemente da categoria de software envolvida, quando solicitados a instalar ou dar manutenção em uma máquina dessas, faz parte do trabalho de profissionais de TI levantar o que seus clientes precisam no computador, conhecer as opções disponíveis ou pesquisá-las, para satisfazer essas necessidades. Não precisa ser tratado como uma religião que tenha algum dogma inquestionável para todas as situações, mesmo que isso infelizmente pareça ser o caso com frequência. Ao contrário, a idéia, aqui, é empoderar os usuários para que consigam exercer sua liberdade tecnológica e mantê-la sustentável.
Meu pai (com mais de 70 anos) que, felizmente, é saudável, embora nunca tivesse usado um computador antes, acabou se tornando um usuário final de Xfce e Firefox praticamente sem treinamento. Ele sabe como ligar, colocar sua senha, iniciar o navegador por um ícone na tela, abrir alguns sites que deixei na Barra de Favoritos, como de notícias, correio eletrônico, instituições financeiras etc. Eventualmente, aprendeu como digitar outros endereços simples, fazer buscas, e até a iniciar uma sessão de assistência remota e me chamar quando precisa. Isso teve início antes de ter começado a usar celulares inteligentes. É como o usuário idoso médio de outros sistemas, ou melhor. Há alguns docentes pós-doutores que, mesmo utilizando o sistema operacional dominante, chegam a ter dificuldade para fazer isso tudo, talvez por falta da vontade necessária. Ele, na realidade, até chegou a experimentar, sem minha interferência, o sistema privativo que veio instalado em um então novo laptop, já há vários anos. Não demorou até me pedir para “consertá-lo”, para que deixasse como já estava acostumado. De vez em quando, atualizo para ele o GNU que, então, permanece estável, eficiente em uso de recursos, seguro, possuindo o que ele precisa, sendo que, com outro sistema, provavelmente a máquina já estaria obsoleta. Então, como poderia ele não estar feliz com isso? Reclama quando um site não faz o que ele quer, o provedor de Internet cai ou a impressora trava, como qualquer outro usuário. Por tudo que é tão elogiado naquele típico sistema operacional privativo, dito intuitivo, era para ser bem fácil para todas as pessoas se acostumarem a ele, certo?
A lição é que qualquer mudança de hábito é muito difícil para a maioria das pessoas, que costumam ser teimosas. Se tivessem sido ensinadas desde o princípio a usar algum ambiente desktop, ferramentas e aplicativos livres, mesmo que diferentes de seus equivalentes privativos com funcionalidades semelhantes, elas estariam acostumadas e provavelmente evitariam a situação oposta. Assim como as massas têm sofrido lavagem cerebral para acreditarem que existe apenas uma maneira de usar o computador. É por isso que elas mantêm tudo na mesma, ainda que estejam sujeitas a obsolescência programada, aprisionamento tecnológico, práticas monopolistas, comprometimento de privacidade e segurança, ou algum outro tipo de dependência pesada das maiores corporações de tecnologia, preferindo isso a aprender qualquer coisa que pudesse torná-las capazes de exercer mais liberdade perante o software.
Se alguém disser que "Linux é apenas para servidores", isso é uma mentira.
O Linux hoje não tem nenhuma limitação técnica para uso em computadores pessoais, e é inclusive muito eficiente para este propósito.
Linux não é um sistema "só para servidores", e sim um sistema de propósito de uso geral.
As "limitações" são mais na parte de suporte para programas e drivers proprietários, e também tem o fato de que você geralmente não está pagando pra ter suporte técnico profissional.
Explicando sobre o nome do sistema operacional: a questão é que "Linux" propriamente dito é impossível de ser utilizado em qualquer tipo de máquina. É um projeto de desenvolvimento focado no chamado kernel, algo que simplesmente não funciona sozinho. O que a gente usa e recomenda é o :gnu: sistema operacional GNU, projeto criado em 1983 para desenvolver um sistema operacional completo. Ele passou a ser utilizado com o kernel Linux após este ser lançado — ou, atualmente, melhor ainda com :linuxLibre: Linux-libre. Cada projeto tem seu próprio nome, então não precisamos mais confundi-los ao conhecermos o que é o quê.
Linux, aliás, é um kernel que pode ser componente de outros sistemas operacionais além do GNU: Android, por exemplo. Mais? OpenWrt ou, melhor ainda, #LibreCMC. Se não chamamos nenhum desses de "Linux", por que deixamos o GNU ser chamado assim?
Para quem quer lembrar sempre o kernel, que, de fato, é parte elementar para o funcionamento de um sistema operacional e que fez com que o GNU ficasse completo o suficiente para que, enfim, surgissem suas distribuições para uso final, como as que persistem até hoje, ambas em 1993, Slackware e principalmente :debian: Debian — esta contando com financiamento inicial da própria FSF — é recomendado o termo "GNU/Linux" para designar o conjunto.

O Alpine Linux, sem carregar 1 componente do GNU, é muito parecido com os sistemas operacionais construídos com bibliotecas e pacotes do GNU como conhecemos, e não deixa de ser feito em grande parte por software livre.
Sim, BSD e seguintes, posteriormente, após tornados livres, idem, muito antes de Alpine. Não invalida o argumento sobre "GNU/Linux" e, inclusive, digo que será triste quando corporações como #Canonical também deixem de distribuir GNU em prol sabe-se lá de que tipo de software mesclando o que seria livre com o que lamentavelmente já faz tempo que não é.
@daltux @rony é importante considerar que no fim das contas, é tudo Unix, só que o Unix proprietário da AT&T foi obrigado a ficar para a história, graças principalmente ao Linux e ao projeto GNU.
A mesma AT&T que tentou impedir a continuidade do BSD, já não tem mais este poder.
GNU Não é Unix, nem no nome desde 1983. Além de ter sido escrito do zero, ao contrário de BSD que é herdeiro de Unix, nem tenta ser: tem suas semelhanças com Unix de outrora, como todos que implementam POSIX, livres ou não. O que seria interessante de sempre reforçar, diferentemente do que nos convencem há uns 25 anos, seria a preferência ao que quer que tenha o propósito de ser totalmente livre em vez daquilo que não tem (ou nunca nem teve) esse compromisso e até criou toda uma dissidência que hoje é mainstream, dominada pelo maior Capital da história, mesmo que acabe sendo às vezes livre ou, geralmente, parcialmente. Alpine Linux não deixou de ter a forma geral do GNU, embora tenha usado componentes reduzidos pra disfarçar sua origem e mostrar que é possível. não são componentes GNU nem derivados do GNU, mas são inspirados no GNU, da mesma forma que o GNU e o Linux se inspirou no Unix. Alpine é a exceção que confirma a regra. ou seja, seu suposto problema é sintoma de algo mais profundo: a pergunta interessante que continua sem resposta.

Android pode ser usado como desktop. De qualquer maneira, Linux é um kernel. Diferentemente, p.ex., de FreeBSD, que não é apenas isso.

O Alpine Linux ainda tem a vantagem de ser muito eficiente, consome pouca memória, mas pode ter limitações de compatibilidade por não usar as funções da biblioteca GLIBC.

o caminho é promover a consciência de que, enquanto usuários (e, por que não, enquanto pagantes), merecemos controlar o que fazem os dispositivos que compramos e usamos para nossa computação, em vez de confiar cegamente em fornecedores que mais e mais se mostram hostis e abusivos
sem essa consciência, o pessoal fica dando preferência ao Linux com blobs; com a consciência no lugar certo, a gente insiste pros fornecedores respeitarem nossa autonomia, vai usando dispositivos que nos respeitem pra não alimentar o monstro, e informando e trazendo mais e mais usuários pra essa preferência. quanto mais usuários fizerem questão de liberdade, mais fornecedores darão importância a esse mercado, viabilizando que ainda mais usuários vivam em liberdade mesmo sem ter (ainda) a consciência.
assim é que se fecha o ciclo virtuoso que transforma uma indústria abusiva em uma que nos respeite. e é para desenvolver essa consciência que precisa chamar o GNU de GNU, porque ele é o símbolo de liberdade; Linux nem livre é, infelizmente.
É horrível termos, consumidores, que fazer o trabalho que era pra ser do fornecedor, de providenciar que, no mínimo, pudéssemos usar, estudar, adaptar e eventualmente redistribuir o produto que compramos como bem quiséssemos. É necessário resolver o problema da falta de suporte para dispositivos dependentes de firmwares fechados, e se isso é necessário pra ter um sistema operacional livre nos termos da FSF, então este é um caminho que pode ser considerado.

Yeah, you would at least have to negotiate with a friend inside of the university to be able to join in the context of a specific project. Maybe make a donation to the univ that pays for the materials for the project or something. But then again, those are materials you were going to buy anyway.
