“They are associated with multiple capital projects across the whole of government that were delayed, completed under budget, or abandoned, which led to interest earnings on the cash that accumulated,” Republican Treasurer Brad Briner said.
“Through our review, we found $170 million of cash that has been sitting idle in the state’s accounts for years,” Briner said in a statement. “That money can be put to good use, and we intend to do exactly that – reducing our outstanding debt to improve the fiscal health of the state.”
The funds were not assigned to any particular agency of state government, Briner told The Center Square.

Also, please consider enabling moderated signups if you don’t already have them. I get it - signups dropped by >90% when I did it, but there’s very little capability for dealing with bad actors proactively once they have an account. I know it’s not a foolproof way to keep the scammers out, but it is an improvement.
I saw a comment or two out in the ether that made me realize that these scams are going to get more problematic as people assume the “verification” that is required is from the UK Safety Act, the Mississippi disaster law, or some other government requirement.

very little abuse comes my way on this server, Jerry. I'm constantly in awe of how quickly spammy accounts get reported and binned here. Half the time by the time I've finished flagging an account that has *just* spammed me I find they're already gone. And that always makes me smile.
This is also a good opportunity to explain to newcomers why it's a good idea for them to add a line or two to their profiles about their interests and what they do. I know there are folks who will not approve blank profile requests, and are generally suspicious of them
