All of this is true, but I'd guess that most of those making that complaint have a small enough number of subscribers that they're "free" on the substack plan. To move from $0 to even a $50/month Ghost Pro entry level plan for the same number of users is a prohibitive jump in out-of-pocket costs.

As an academic, there are several users on Bluesky I would like to follow. Sadly very few are bridged for now. Hopefully all Bluesky accounts will be open for bridging at some point.
Another advantage is that thanks to Bridgy I can convince my partner to join Mastodon instead of Bluesky to promote her work, as the reach is the same on either platform.
Somewhat selfishly, I'd suggest she try Mbin instead. It allows her to interact with both the microblog side of the fediverse (including bridges) and the thread side, from the same interface.
She's not interested in using any social media at all, she just wants a place to toot about her publications because it's part of the job. So some Mastodon instance specific to her field is pretty much as good as it gets for her usecase. As an academic the domain-specific Mastodon instances are pretty great.
THIS is what I keep telling people. The fediverse will win in the end as long as it bridges out to everyone. Because eventually the centralized services will die, or lose popularity. Myspace is dead. HotOrNot is dead. Digg is dead. Friendster is dead. Facebook is dying. YahooIM is dead. AOLIM/AIM is dead. ICQ is dead. MSN Messanger is dead.
All these communication services died because they were centrally supported. But if MissKey dies, the fediverse doesn't die. The MissKey users just migrate to a new service.
Now if twitter, and threads, and facebook, and reddit, and instagram, and all these other services integrate with the fediverse, the fediverse benefits. And if meta dies in 2042, that's fine. Threads will go away, and facebook, and whatsapp, and instagram will all go away. But the users will say "Now, I heard about pixelfed. Instagram is gone, lets just go to pixelfed."
Whereas HotOrNot users didn't have a fediverse they COULD federate with. So back then, the website just died, and nobody's heard of that concept for a website. There was no replacement. The userbase just ceased to exist.
The pillars for centralized services will fall in time with or without the fediverse. But WITH the fediverse connected before they fall, you implant the suggestion that there IS more out there to an audience that otherwise had no idea the fediverse existed.
Only reason I know of Lemmy/the fediverse is because I got autobanned from reddit. I went out of my way to search for a reddit replacement. Prior to that, I had no idea the fediverse existed. I think I vaguely heard of mastodon......but had no idea it was connected to a bigger network.
Blocking an instance is a powerful tool if it is what you have in mind. Blocking or defederating with such activitypub bridge may have unwanted side effects. It has been discussed before, when meta moved closer to the fediverse. Some kind of fediverse split may happen : those who connect with wallet garden platforms vs the others living in the fediverse as we know it today.
Doesn't make threads itself any more open. If the only thing that matters to be "open" is the individual's ability to block content from them why not "federate" with twitter?
I mean that's not the only thing, I can follow this MBin account that I'm using to talk with you from Threads, and I can interact with Threads posts as well, I've even gotten likes from there

Because let's face it, 95% of the profiles ARE on twitter. Not everybody who uses social media gives one shit about open source. I'd say most on mastodon DO, but I'd say the vast majority on bluesky DON'T.
This will help you understand why bluesky has 24.5 active million users, and mastodon has 1.5 million active users.
Twitters new reputation is a rightwing hellhole. THAT'S why they're bleeding users. Bluesky is exactly like twitter in functionality, but left wing leaning.
Mastodon isn't political by nature, but functions very differently. The people who care about open source, and decentralized, and all these other things, those people signed up for mastodon. Everybody else who didn't care, didn't.
Now to be fair, mastodon has 10 million registered users, but only 1.5 active users. Compare that to blueskys 25 million users, with 24.5 active users.
Given mastodon's older age compared to bluesky, it suggests to me that at some point in the past, people signed up for mastodon as an alternative to twitter.....and by large have left the platform.
My speculation is that it probably happened when must bought twitter 2 years ago. Before bluesky became popular. Then they left when they realized mastodon works differently than twitter.
Threads is a great example of a company acknowledging that the open web exists and bringing content people want to places where they want to be. I'd like to be able to interact with everyone through one or two accounts, not have to maintain a Meta account, an Mbin account, a Google account, and all the rest.
You may not like it, but I believe the open web is about things like Threads being federated - individual platforms interacting freely, no matter who built them.
Threads acknowledges the fediverse like Microsoft acknowledged IRC. Their goal is to drain out the voices of all instances, since that is the only way to defeat a product not owned by a single entity. Will they accomplish it? Most likely not, but that doesn't make them any more appealing.
I don't remember MSN Messenger being able to handle IRC chats. If it had, I wouldn't have needed an IRC client. But Threads won't drown out other voices, they'll just add voices to the conversation. There's content on Threads that's worth following, and I don't think it's valuable to lose that because of a few engagement farms that you can either personally block or defederate.
Most social media has a leftward bias. Avoiding politics in any form of social media now is like trying to avoid plankton in ocean water - you might be able to do it, but you'll need a really tight filter.

Here we show, based on our analysis of a newly identified genus, Anadoluvius, from the 8.7 Ma site of Çorakyerler in central Anatolia, that Mediterranean fossil apes are diverse, and are part of the first known radiation of early members of the hominines. The members of this radiation are currently only identified in Europe and Anatolia; generally accepted hominins are only found in Africa from the late Miocene until the Pleistocene. Hominines may have originated in Eurasia during the late Miocene, or they may have dispersed into Eurasia from an unknown African ancestor. The diversity of hominines in Eurasia suggests an in situ origin but does not exclude a dispersal hypothesis.

#Palestine / Israel’s Supreme Court orders demolition of illegal settlement construction on Palestinian land near Nabi Aner, 7 years after the case was filed
The case, filed in December 2017 by the head of Ras Karkar village council, two residents of Deir Amar village, and the human rights organizations Yesh Din and Emek Shaveh, challenged the illegal construction and takeover of the Nabi Aner archaeological site.
The site, partially located on Palestinian-owned land near Ramallah, contains significant cultural heritage including springs, a mosque, and ruins of historical structures. Since the early 2000s, Palestinian landowners have experienced severe violence from Israeli settlers, hindering access to the site. Israeli settlers subsequently transformed the area into a recreational site, illegally constructing pools, pathways, and other structures, even boasting about displacing Palestinians.
Despite repeated appeals to authorities, the illegal construction continued. The Israeli government attempted to delay enforcement by citing the “Regularization Law,” but the Supreme Court rejected this argument in 2020. Finally, on December 17, 2024, the court ruled in favor of the petitioners, ordering the demolition of illegal structures within six months and the restoration of the site to its pre-occupation state.
The court emphasized the state's obligation to protect Palestinian property rights and ensure access to heritage sites. The ruling also criticized the government and prosecution for their handling of the case.

The general Nordid type probably evolved through the blending of gracilized northern European Cro-Magnoids (robust broad-faced Upper Paleolithic types) with various types, including tall leptomorphs associated with the Battle-Axe and Boat-Axe peoples, who entered Europe from the Eurasian steppes (carrying the Corded type with them), penetrating the various Nordid-formative territories in several consecutive waves. The resulting blends were subsequently stabilized, and the resultant types further specialized, to yield the present Nordid varieties. The ancestral Corded type (named after its association with the Corded Ware culture), with its high vault and long head, was skeletally "nordiform" (approaching a Nordid), or perhaps Mediterranid (of a larger, more robust variety).

Estos días he estado haciendo cosas típicas de poblado medieval típico. Por ejemplo, el típico pozo. También, y como no podía ser de otra forma, una taberna donde nuestros héroes se reúnen frente a una pinta de cerveza tras una aventura.
Otra cosa que me he fijado es que todo el mundo hace poblados medievales con sus puentes, fuentes, casas, posadas, castillos, iglesias, etc. Pero casi nadie (bueno, no he visto a nadie aún) repara en dos edificaciones típicas de los poblados medievales; el lavadero público (donde se lavaba la ropa a mano, aprovechando el rio) y el horno comunal (un horno de piedra a disposición de la gente del pueblo para hacer pan, por ejemplo).
No os penséis que he abandonado el #TinyGlade, yo sigo haciendo cosas. Por ejemplo últimamente he estado refinando este pueblo para incorporar su iglesia con cementerio y campana, una fuente de agua e incluso un hórreo:

This time by Jean-Daniel #Ruch 👇, who was Switzerland's ambassador to Türkiye at the time.
He confirms other accounts that it is the West - specifically "the Americans with their British allies" - that "pulled the plug on the negotiations" when they were "on the edge" of succeeding. He says they did so because they thought it was too early and they wanted to "first weaken Russia".
As he describes it, he found the decision "deeply immoral" because "it was clear at that time that if the war continued there would be an escalation and the dead would be at least in the tens of thousands, more likely in the hundreds of thousands".
He asks, rhetorically: "why did all these people die?" because now "they may have weakened Russia but they weakened the whole West at the same time, maybe not the Americans but certainly Europe." Also, if a peace deal was done today, it would still "pretty much be based on what was negotiated in Istanbul", assuming the Russians are still willing, a tall order given he's "not so sure that the Russians are prepared to compromise today."

Jean-Daniel #Ruch, qui était à l'époque ambassadeur de #Suisse en #Turquie, confirme d'autres témoignages selon lesquels ce sont les Occidentaux, et notamment «les Américains et leurs alliés britanniques», qui ont «interrompu les négociations» alors qu'elles étaient «sur le point» de réussir. Selon lui, ils l'ont fait parce qu'ils pensaient qu'il était trop tôt et qu'ils voulaient «d'abord affaiblir la Russie».
Selon lui, cette décision était «profondément immorale» car «il était clair à l'époque que si la guerre continuait, il y aurait une escalade et les morts se compteraient au moins en dizaines de milliers, voire en centaines de milliers».
Il demande, de manière rhétorique : «Pourquoi tous ces gens sont-ils morts ?» car «ils ont peut-être affaibli la Russie, mais ils ont affaibli en même temps tout l’Occident, peut-être pas les #USA, mais certainement l’Europe.» De plus, si un accord de paix était conclu aujourd’hui, il «serait toujours basé en grande partie sur ce qui a été négocié à Istanbul», en supposant que les Russes soient toujours disposés, une tâche difficile étant donné qu’il n’est «pas si sûr que les Russes soient prêts à faire des compromis aujourd’hui.»

I just read that the Democrats declined to give AOC an important committee role and decided to stick with a guy who's 74 and has cancer. And this right here is an excellent example of why the Democrats annoy the shit out of me. I'm not ageist, I'm getting old, but do think the old guard needs to make room for younger people who are more appealing to voters.
