Entre 1974 et aujourdโhui, la part de lโindustrie dans le PIB est tombรฉe de 28,7 % ร 10 % โ un niveau comparable ร celui de ces grands pays industriels que sont le Luxembourg ou Malte โ, quand elle est encore de 23 % en Allemagne, de 18 % en Italie. There's probably a thread in what I want to achieve with the changelog/release notes, but the short version is I think it's hard because it requires altering your perspective from developer to user (or occasionally packager).
For example I just removed an entry that says "The HTML-based configuration UI now uses Alpine.js instead of AngularJS" because this should be invisible to users and packagers, and it is not actionable.
The Rust port is a high-priority entry, not because it has any impact on day-to-day use of fish, but because it has major implications on packagers -- including the dropping of at least one platform.
Anyway, this is probably the biggest blocker of releases: I spend a lot of time polishing the release notes. It is not clear to me whether the cost is worth it.
It's not cutting the actual release, which is about fifteen minutes of copy-pasting from the checklist and waiting for various processes. Communicating the release also takes a lot longer than actually making it.

most CHANGELOG/release notes don't really seem to have any impact on the adoption of the program. Every Android app just says "Bug fixes and improvements", autogenerated texts like Homebrew's are impenetrable, and they're doing way better than we are at getting releases out the door.

So, if youโre a dedicated PC gamer, you're not content to just collect games through Steam. Nah. Youโre probably getting your games through other stores as well!
And if youโve got an Amazon Prime account, you can get a bunch of free games each month across the most popular stores, too! For instance, I just got BioShock through GOG because of my Amazon Prime subscription. But how do you actually PLAY GOG Games on your Steam Deck? Thatโs exactly what this video is going to cover.
Keep in mind that for this video Iโm using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected to my Steam Deck, but all of this is possible to do with just the built-in controls. If you get to point where the right trackpad is no longer controlling your mouse cursor, you can hold the Steam button and it will put the right trackpad into mouse mode. You can also hold the Steam button and press X to bring up the virtual keyboard.
Now, there are two ways to do this and weโll cover them both. Then weโll review the pros and cons of each method, so stick around to the end of the video for that!
Heroic Game Launcher
The first option is Heroic Games Launcher. Heroic is a separate application from Steam, but it also offers greater flexibility and control over the games you have installed, how theyโre launched, and their Proton configuration. If you like having control and you donโt mind a few minor inconveniences, Heroic is an excellent option.
The first step to getting set up is to switch over to Desktop mode. Hit the STEAM button, then go to Power โ Switch to Desktop Mode.
Now, letโs open up Discover store. If itโs not down here on your task bar, you can click on the Deck logo and search for Discover.
Next, letโs apply any updates that are pending. This can take a few minutes.
Finally, in the search field type in โHeroic Gamesโ and it should be the first result. Once itโs done installing, Iโd recommend going into the Start menu, search for โHeroic Games,โ and then right-click (left trigger if youโre using the Deckโs controls), then select โAdd to Steam.โ This will enable you to launch Heroic from game mode.
Now, letโs launch Heroic and click on โManage Accounts.โ This will allow you to sign in to your GOG Account as well as your Epic Games and Amazon Prime accounts.
Go ahead and get logged in here and then letโs head to the Library page. Iโm gonna install BioShock as well as SimCity 2000. Iโm gonna try SC2K first. It will ask about which version of Proton you want to use. You can just select OK here. After a few moments, the game should launch. And thereโs SimCity 2000.
Letโs see about BioShock. Again, we have the usual installation process and then the game launches. Excellent.
I want to point out that if you find Heroic Game Launcher worth your while, you can support them on Patreon or Ko-fi. Theyโre a truly awesome utility and Linux gaming would be worse off without them.
At any point, we can head back into game mode, navigate to Library โ Non-Steam Games โ Heroic Games Launcher. Once youโve got it started, you can launch any game. To get back to Heroic while your game is running, you can hit the STEAM button. Youโll see Heroic Games Launcher at the top of the options on the left. Go into this menu and then, at the bottom of the list youโll see Heroic Games Launcher. This will let you switch window has focus.
Junk-Store
At the top of this video, I mentioned that there are two ways to set up GOG games on your Deck. The first way (Heroic) is simpler to get started with. The other?
The other is a little more involved. Itโs also not free. But I does provide a way to get your GOG games feeling a little more โat homeโ on your Deck.
To get started, youโll need to set up DeckyLoader. Iโve made a video about that here. This step is crucial so make sure you check that out. When youโve got DeckyLoader set up, come back here.
The next step, letโs go into Game Mode, push the Quick Access Menu button and then go to the plugins tab. Here, youโll see the store icon in the top right. Open that up and then search for Junk-Store.
Go ahead and install it. This plugin initially only gives you access to Epic Games which you are free to take advantage of. But if you want GOG, there are a few more steps we need to take.
Letโs drop into Desktop mode. Hit the STEAM button, then go to Power โ Switch to Desktop Mode.
Open up your favorite web browser and head to one of the two links in the description; choose between JunkStoreโs Patreon and Ko-fi pages. You can either become a Patron of their campaign and contribute monthly, or you can buy the GOG extension for a one time payment of $6.
Once youโve made your purchase, download the latest version of the GOG extension and then open the zip file. Now, open up Dolphin (the file manager) and go to your home folder. Next, find Homebrew โ data โ Junk-Store. Finally, extract these files here.
Now, click Start and log out. Once youโre back in game mode, letโs hit the Quick Access Button and then navigate to Plugins โ JunkStore โ โAboutโ. Finally, go to the dependencies tab and hit โInstall Dependenciesโ
Once this is complete, weโre ready to install games from our GOG Library. Go back into the Junk-Store plugin. Then select Games. At the top of the screen you should see supported stores including GOG and EPIC. On the GOG tab, you should see a โLoginโ button. Letโs hit that and then fill in our credentials. After a few moments, you should see your GOG library appear.
Go ahead and install your favorite games and launch them!
Once your games are installed, you can launch them from this screen or from the Non-Steam Games section of your Library.

Pros and Cons
Aside from the obvious differences of UI and ease of installation, why would you want one over the other?
The way I see it, there are two big things to consider.
JunkStore offers a simply and easy way to get a game installed into your Steam library where Heroic does not. Why is that important? And itโs because games installed through JunkStore can have their own individual Steam Input profiles set.
There are ways to do this with Heroic, but itโs much more of a manual process.
JunkStore also uses the native Steam Play support afforded by Steam. This means that managing which version of Proton the game runs through is a breeze. But it also is limited.
Heroic, on the other hand, gives you many more options when it comes to setup. If you need finer control, Heroic is the way to go.
So thatโs the video. No matter which option you decide to go with, youโve now got access to your GOG Library on Steam Deck. Even better: both of these options should work on other Linux gaming distros, as well.

Today's story features interviews with two recent cryptocurrency heist victims (one who lost > $4.5M) who were hit by the same scammers. The fraudsters used:
-Google Assistant to automate outgoing calls to victims warning of a security incident with their account, and to press 1 to speak to a rep;
-An email from google.com warning about an email hacking incident, including the name and phone number of the Google rep who will be calling. The alerts were sent via Google Forms, which makes them come from google.com.
-Victims were convinced someone had taken over their accounts when they received an alert pop up on their mobile from Google, asking if they were trying to recover access to their account. By this time, the victims were convinced they were talking with Google, and clicked "yes, it's me" trying to recover access:

This is not a post about people being dumb, on the contrary. It's too easy to put trust into the wrong apps/web sites - and that's where the real issue lies.
The lesson should be: Your data is not safe in the cloud. Stop putting pictures, codes and security backups there.

All of this is true, but I'd guess that most of those making that complaint have a small enough number of subscribers that they're "free" on the substack plan. To move from $0 to even a $50/month Ghost Pro entry level plan for the same number of users is a prohibitive jump in out-of-pocket costs.

As an academic, there are several users on Bluesky I would like to follow. Sadly very few are bridged for now. Hopefully all Bluesky accounts will be open for bridging at some point.
Another advantage is that thanks to Bridgy I can convince my partner to join Mastodon instead of Bluesky to promote her work, as the reach is the same on either platform.
Somewhat selfishly, I'd suggest she try Mbin instead. It allows her to interact with both the microblog side of the fediverse (including bridges) and the thread side, from the same interface.
She's not interested in using any social media at all, she just wants a place to toot about her publications because it's part of the job. So some Mastodon instance specific to her field is pretty much as good as it gets for her usecase. As an academic the domain-specific Mastodon instances are pretty great.
THIS is what I keep telling people. The fediverse will win in the end as long as it bridges out to everyone. Because eventually the centralized services will die, or lose popularity. Myspace is dead. HotOrNot is dead. Digg is dead. Friendster is dead. Facebook is dying. YahooIM is dead. AOLIM/AIM is dead. ICQ is dead. MSN Messanger is dead.
All these communication services died because they were centrally supported. But if MissKey dies, the fediverse doesn't die. The MissKey users just migrate to a new service.
Now if twitter, and threads, and facebook, and reddit, and instagram, and all these other services integrate with the fediverse, the fediverse benefits. And if meta dies in 2042, that's fine. Threads will go away, and facebook, and whatsapp, and instagram will all go away. But the users will say "Now, I heard about pixelfed. Instagram is gone, lets just go to pixelfed."
Whereas HotOrNot users didn't have a fediverse they COULD federate with. So back then, the website just died, and nobody's heard of that concept for a website. There was no replacement. The userbase just ceased to exist.
The pillars for centralized services will fall in time with or without the fediverse. But WITH the fediverse connected before they fall, you implant the suggestion that there IS more out there to an audience that otherwise had no idea the fediverse existed.
Only reason I know of Lemmy/the fediverse is because I got autobanned from reddit. I went out of my way to search for a reddit replacement. Prior to that, I had no idea the fediverse existed. I think I vaguely heard of mastodon......but had no idea it was connected to a bigger network.
Blocking an instance is a powerful tool if it is what you have in mind. Blocking or defederating with such activitypub bridge may have unwanted side effects. It has been discussed before, when meta moved closer to the fediverse. Some kind of fediverse split may happen : those who connect with wallet garden platforms vs the others living in the fediverse as we know it today.
Doesn't make threads itself any more open. If the only thing that matters to be "open" is the individual's ability to block content from them why not "federate" with twitter?

Because let's face it, 95% of the profiles ARE on twitter. Not everybody who uses social media gives one shit about open source. I'd say most on mastodon DO, but I'd say the vast majority on bluesky DON'T.
This will help you understand why bluesky has 24.5 active million users, and mastodon has 1.5 million active users.
Twitters new reputation is a rightwing hellhole. THAT'S why they're bleeding users. Bluesky is exactly like twitter in functionality, but left wing leaning.
Mastodon isn't political by nature, but functions very differently. The people who care about open source, and decentralized, and all these other things, those people signed up for mastodon. Everybody else who didn't care, didn't.
Now to be fair, mastodon has 10 million registered users, but only 1.5 active users. Compare that to blueskys 25 million users, with 24.5 active users.
Given mastodon's older age compared to bluesky, it suggests to me that at some point in the past, people signed up for mastodon as an alternative to twitter.....and by large have left the platform.
My speculation is that it probably happened when must bought twitter 2 years ago. Before bluesky became popular. Then they left when they realized mastodon works differently than twitter.
Threads is a great example of a company acknowledging that the open web exists and bringing content people want to places where they want to be. I'd like to be able to interact with everyone through one or two accounts, not have to maintain a Meta account, an Mbin account, a Google account, and all the rest.
You may not like it, but I believe the open web is about things like Threads being federated - individual platforms interacting freely, no matter who built them.
Threads acknowledges the fediverse like Microsoft acknowledged IRC. Their goal is to drain out the voices of all instances, since that is the only way to defeat a product not owned by a single entity. Will they accomplish it? Most likely not, but that doesn't make them any more appealing.
I don't remember MSN Messenger being able to handle IRC chats. If it had, I wouldn't have needed an IRC client. But Threads won't drown out other voices, they'll just add voices to the conversation. There's content on Threads that's worth following, and I don't think it's valuable to lose that because of a few engagement farms that you can either personally block or defederate.
