LLMs are just good prediction machines. They might be fine for small simple requirements, and I've seen people argue you can carefully stack those really simple requirements and not get garbage.
I no longer have a Github CoPilot license from work, but the local models I run with Ollama honestly aren't that much worse. Both are pretty limited and get a lot of things wrong all the time.
If you're not actually a good developer, AI is just going to give you stuff that might poorly work if you're lucky. It's not intelligent. If anything it proves how simple most human beings are, and how they'll believe anything phrased to sound correct so long as it comes from their gods.
the key to using LLMs productively for coding is knowing their limitations. i delegate small tasks to them. write me a function for such and such, or find the error in this code, etc. they're not ready to manage complex projects ("vibe coding") yet. i think you'll get back a bunch of junk that you may spend more time debugging than if you just managed the project yourseif in the first place
however that is rapidly changing. people are actually starting to do stuff like "make me a game that does xyz"
it really comes down to input and output token context limits and how much they can actively keep in memory at any given time. i expect within about 2 years LLMs will become viable to perform at the level of lead developers. i would say they're at junior dev level now. enough knowledge and reasoning ability to be productve but still need a lot of guidance.

They literally cannot reason. There is no goal settings. An LLM is nothing but a massive matrix of weights for tokens (parts of words) to every other token in a multidimensional space. 3Blue1Blue does a good basic video about this:

These machines have some emergent properties, but reasoning is definitely not one of them. They simply predict things that look right and select the next word base on percentages. If it looks like it can reason, that's kinda accidental.

i think you should look up the definition of reason because it doesn't require goal setting.
i've seen the 3b1b video on neural networks. you should probably check out the original "attention is all you need" paper that introduced the transformer architecture. they're not simply spitting out the next most likely word for their own output like a stochastic parrot- they look at words in context.
all these arguments about how neural networks aren't intelligent could be made about your own brain. i think they're intelligent, and they reason, which is why all these LLM services offer their "reasoning" models and make bold claims about reasoning. they understand what reasoning is
but again, just keep in mind the limitations. having a rudimentary ability to reason doesn't mean they can reason at a human level (yet, but soon they will...)
...also, distinguish "goal settings" in the context of neural networks (i gather this is what you're referring to- goal oriented back propagation), from the context of reasoning (employing logic)
