The journalists could have kept this quiet… although… on the other hand, this is also an excellent, low-risk way to inform the group they have been compromised. Had the person taking screenshots sent them exclusively to the university instead, they would have known they were compromised only when the university responded (possibly with police). This way they instead have an opportunity to evaluate their group and actions, particularly as no one is identified in the article.

I've often wondered if i would enjoy the result from singing into a ribbon microphone. Unfortunately I know so little about the ones currently available (or vintage models that actually have an XLR out).
What are your thoughts? Better off using a plug-in to emulate? What models have you tried?
the former cascade microphones were bang on top of bang for buck. the fathead or fathead II will do you good. i pretty much never see a reason not to use a ribbon. i sold off all but 1 of my condenser mics a few years ago bc i wasn't reaching for anything that wasn't a ribbon. they have great detail. historically, they have low output but I don't know if that's a problem with newer ribbon mics bc I have never had a problem getting enough gain. some would say they're tonally dark, but i think they gently roll off the end of high spectrum you don't need anyways.
finally, i think "pinnacle" is the name of the brand that is still producing the fat head and some other of the best cascade models (brother of the late cascade mic dude).
ah yeah i think there's something funny about the tonal qualities of the AT series. granted, i had a much cheaper model (the 2035 if i recall correctly). could never find a good use for it, at least not in my bedroom applications. Even as a room mic, it seems to have attenuate and augment all frequencies all over the place. i really think any decent ribbon mic is the best of all worlds. you'll get detail and texture thats very close to a condenser without all the unflattering detail that you don't need if you're not recording in a professional studio.

Fortunately, from what I've learned in the studio and elsewhere is that a good recording seems to be 85% performance, 8% instruments, 5% placement, and 2% gear.
Haven't tried yet but I, too, am curious. Admittedly, it's partly from an aesthetic angle. Just not quite curious enough to invest yet, because I actually like the very detailed response of my condensor.
I guess you could use a plugin to get a ballpark idea, to test the waters before investing. OTOH, there are cheap off-brand options that get good reviews.
ribbon microphones are great on vocals in my experience. The Royer stuff is modern and handles very high SPL.. but it's quite expensive. The Mojave brand is by the same folks but is more affordable. The ribbon element itself is generally very sensitive to plosives though, so definitely use a pop filter/screen in front of it.
You need a preamp with a lot of clean gain on tap, or you can use a line booster like the Cloudlifter. Ribbons tend to need a lot more juice.
@benda I'm sort of thinking of ditching my AT-4033. It's good for some things, but it's too merciless for my voice. I like it on my acoustic, but that same precision records about 10x the string noise that my ears hear.
The only thing holding me back is that it's surprisingly good on stage, especially with an ensemble.
I did pick up a PZM I'm looking forward to trying out in the studio in place of the AT.
I have a Cascade Microphone fathead ribbon mic. (Cascade appears to be out of business now). I like to use this mic on my accordion as it tames some of the harsher treble overtones. I have used it on vocals in the past and it sounds pretty good but I think works better with a stronger voice than a softer one. It lacks some of the high end clarity that large diaphragm condensers have. I had a pair of MXL R144 ribbons but they had a lot of noise so I sold them.
Every studio needs at least one ribbon mic. Fortunately, it’s such old, simple tech that even very inexpensive ones can sound really nice. MXL makes a very affordable one. I own a Royer R10. I’ve also owned the sE VR1 and an old Cascade Victor (now the Pinnacle Vinnie in it’s current iteration) which are also great.

Sometimes (like now) the login succeeds after several minutes. I've had more luck logging in from an app (Relatica). Any ideas what's happening? Thank you.
Update: It seems I can log in to view contacts or local conversations. But viewing the timeline or my own conversations is where the problem is. Sometimes it works, but sometimes several minutes of trying to load gives me 'bad gateway' or 'timed out'.
Same thing here on venera.social, some pages work smoothly enough, some timeout. “Latest posts” feed usually opens OK, but “Latest activity” has troubles, and it's close to impossible to see profile of someone who posts often.
Knowing nothing about inner working of the system, I'd make a long shot for database indexing problems — at least this is what I usually encounter, when similar queries over same dataset complete in wildly different time, depending on conditions specified.
Update: for about two days I'm unable to see my network feed. Every time it's “gateway timeout”. Before it was hit-and-miss, now — 100% failure rate.
Everything else works, quite decently: local and global community feed, contacts, settings, single contacts (some, at least, haven't checked all), threads and single posts (reached from notifications).
Is it something endemic to a few profiles, mine included? By look of local community feed, others don't seem to have problems…

i feel like not a lot of people even bother to do seperate mixes these days they just send out the theater mix to streaming and assume everyone has a good home theater setup where they aren't limited by how loud they can be
