When I bought my car, it had a cover over the steering wheel that I promptly removed (as in, pulled into the first lay-by to do so) because it slid around in an alarming and dangerous-feeling way. This revealed that the wheel coating was flaking off in places, resulting in black flecks on my hands for the first few weeks.
Today, I did the most driving I have since getting it, and now I have little lumps on the palm of my hand. They’re not (yet?) sore or itchy, but I guess I need to do something about it.

Suite à l'augmentation de la puissance de calcul les résultats doivent prendre moins de temps maintenant, mais en contrepartie les modèles sont plus précis et nécessitent plus de calculs. Pas sûr qu'au final, les temps de calcul se soient bien réduits.
Et, ensuite, les résultats étaient, jusqu'à il n'y a pas si longtemps, revus par des prévisionnistes qui, disposant de relevés plus récents (puisque 8 heures se sont écoulées...) peuvent reconnaître si les prévisions font fausse route et doivent être ajustées dans certaines zones.
C'est cette dernière tâche qui a été retirée des prévisions gratuites (i.e. la météo de monsieur et madame tout-le-monde), pour faire des économies. Et effectivement la qualité des prévisions en pâtit...

I picked up on this today after noticing ZenArmor blocking masses of attempts on my network from a mobile device trying to phone home for an app called Appsflyer. It seems it is embedded into apps for Meta (which operates Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), X, TikTok, Google Ads, Hulu, eBay, etc. It tracks and analyses user behaviour, supposedly inside those apps.
The linked video is explaining to app developers and its customers how it works, and how in 2022 there were nearly 2 billion active users. But pretty damning, at 04:14 it says it can even track users who have uninstalled the application (really, how?). No mention at all in the video about any customer rights, or rights to opt out of this tracking.
The company, Appsflyer I imagine, is a licensed partner of Apple and Google.
Now we can see why some companies get really rich off their free sites, and why decentralised open source platforms have to keep appealing for donations and cannot scale very big otherwise. The difference is those open source platforms respect their users’ privacy, and they live or die by donations and grants (whether in money or labour forms).

Life thread: I like to tinker with and fix things or make things and I plan to do a whole bunch of that once I retire. If I ever have grandchildren, I will make them some toys but my kids are already 21 and 22 and haven't produced any yet. They seem a bit slow. Anyway, a few months ago, I made a joke about replacing my digital piano with a pump organ so I could include playing as part of my workout time. My son can't be here on my birthday and he and his sister went together on my present 1/2
They got me this and gave it to me early. It needs new bellows and silks behind the fretwork, and new stop labels and new leathers on some of the stop valves. I've already ordered the material. Fixing it will be so much fun. It was made in 1885. I estimate it will take me a year to get it fully restored.
