in reply to georgia

@georgia this sounds totally weird and makes no sense. where does the blood go if you put a bunch of salt on it? right into the pan. it doesn't make the blood disappear. unless you're covering the meat in salt then throwing away the salt. this would make a steak really dry and tough.

also i doubt the size of salt grains makes much difference regarding how much moisture it draws out of the meat. if anything it would draw out less moisture

Nobody say โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine.โ€ Saying โ€œFuck #Israel, Free #Palestineโ€ is very offensive to people who think #genocide is good.

When you say โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine,โ€ you are hurting the feelings of the people who believe itโ€™s fine to bomb every hospital in Gaza. So you must never, ever say โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine.โ€
Who do you think you are, saying โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestineโ€? Donโ€™t you know that by saying โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestineโ€ you are causing the people who applaud the deliberate starvation of an entire civilian population to become emotionally upset?

Instead of saying โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine,โ€ you should try putting yourself in the shoes of the tender-hearted individuals who support the complete ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people. Theyโ€™re just minding their own business, merrily celebrating the carpet bombing of a giant concentration camp full of children, and then you come along and ruin their day by saying โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestineโ€? What a cruel and hateful thing that would be.

I mean, all they are doing is cheerleading the mutilation, evisceration and incineration of children, and the assassination of journalists and medical workers, and the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure, and the complete flattening of an entire region whose population they are methodically exterminating via bullets, bombs, starvation and disease. Itโ€™s not like theyโ€™re doing anything nasty or disgusting like saying offensive words. Offensive words like โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine.โ€

So donโ€™t say โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine.โ€ Under no circumstances should anyone ever say โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestine.โ€ And they must certainly never say โ€œFuck Israel, Free Palestineโ€ as many times as they possibly can, every single day until Palestine is free, and get everyone else to say it constantly as well.
Again, the phrase you must avoid saying at all cost is Fuck Israel, Free Palestine.
Fuck Israel, Free Palestine.

Fuck Israel, Free Palestine.

All The Worst Evils Are Happening Right Out In The Open
C. #Johnstone

Trump is committing #genocide for #Israel after publicly admitting to being bought and owned by the #Adelsons.

All the worst shit happens right out in the open. You donโ€™t need to come up with any elaborate conspiracy theories to see it. Itโ€™s right there, completely unhidden.

Itโ€™s not hidden, itโ€™s just spun. Disguised by the propaganda of the mass media who frame this holocaust as a war of defense in response to a terrorist attack while constantly diverting our attention to other far less significant issues.

It says so much about the power of the imperial propaganda machine that #Trump could openly admit to having been fully controlled by #Adelson cash on the campaign trail, get elected, and then facilitate a blatant extermination campaign in #Gaza while aggressively stomping out free speech that is critical of Israel throughout the United States โ€” and somehow not have this be the main thing that everyone talks about all the time. It is only because our minds are being forcefully manipulated by the powerful at mass scale that this has been the case.

The narrative spin is greatly aided by the fact that Trump isnโ€™t doing much different from the previous president here. A public which has been indoctrinated from childhood into seeing everything in Democrat-vs-Republican binaries is conditioned to focus far more on the differences between the two parties than the similarities. But you can learn a whole lot more about real power and whatโ€™s actually going on in the world by paying less attention to how US presidents differ from each other, and more attention to the ways in which they are the same.

The mass-scale psychological manipulation is so pervasive and ubiquitous that only a small minority are reacting to historyโ€™s first live-streamed genocide with an appropriate level of horror. If Americans could see what their government is doing in their name with fresh eyes and uncallused hearts, the nationโ€™s capitol would be burnt to the ground within days. But because their vision is clouded by propaganda indoctrination they canโ€™t see it, so they overlook whatโ€™s right in front of them while awaiting a gigantic Epstein bombshell or UFO disclosure or some other Big Reveal that never comes.

Consider the possibility that the Big Reveal has already happened. That itโ€™s been right here staring you in the face this entire time, but you havenโ€™t noticed its significance because it has been constantly normalized for you throughout your life since you were small. That the truth behind all your most sparkly conspiracy theories could be published online tomorrow, and it still wouldnโ€™t tell you as much about what your rulers are doing and how evil they are as whatโ€™s already happening in plain sight.

This is the dystopia we were warned about. Itโ€™s not some ominous threat looming on the horizon. Itโ€™s here. We are being psychologically manipulated at mass scale into consenting to the most nightmarish atrocities imaginable. Childrenโ€™s bodies are being shredded to bits right in front of us. And when you turn on the TV you see famous people laughing and making jokes with fake plastic grins, babbling about vapid nonsense. This is the dystopia. It isnโ€™t on its way. Itโ€™s here.

We donโ€™t need a Big Reveal. If the Big Reveal happened next week, the public would be indoctrinated into overlooking and dismissing it by the imperial spin machine by the weekend. We donโ€™t need new information, we need people to truly see the information thatโ€™s already here. To see it with eyes that are free from the cataracts of propaganda conditioning, with hearts that are free from the calluses of desensitization. Waking the public up is less about whistleblowers, FOIA requests and investigative journalism at this point than it is about finding creative and artistic ways to get people noticing the information thatโ€™s already public.

And the good news is that we can all help do this. We can all help our fellow members of the public to see whatโ€™s really happening with fresh eyes. Using our creativity, our humor, our insight and our compassion, we can find new ways every day to open a new pair of eyelids to the truth of our present circumstances.

Our rulers do not have creativity. They do not have humor, insight or compassion. These are not tools that they have in their toolbox, and they have no weapons to counter them. All they have is manipulation, and manipulation only works if you donโ€™t know itโ€™s happening to you. Our task is to keep finding new and creative ways to help more people see and understand the ways in which they have been manipulated.

1915 Ermeni soykฤฑrฤฑmฤฑnda kรถtรผler ve iyiler

ฤฐttihat ve Terakki Cemiyeti, tehcir ve imhayฤฑ gerรงekleลŸtirirken, Kรผrt, Tรผrk, ร‡erkes, Gรผrcรผ, Ermeni, Alevi, Sรผnni, Hฤฑristiyan, Ezidi toplumlarฤฑ arasฤฑndaki gerilimleri ustaca kullandฤฑ.

24 Nisan 1915โ€™te bir grup Ermeni entelektรผelinin ร‡ankฤฑrฤฑ ve AyaลŸโ€™a sรผrgรผnรผ ile sembolik olarak, 27 Mayฤฑs 1915 tarihli โ€˜SavaลŸ Zamanฤฑnda Hรผkรผmet Uygulamalarฤฑna KarลŸฤฑ Gelenler ฤฐรงin Asker Tarafฤฑndan Uygulanacak ร–nlemler Hakkฤฑnda Geรงici Kanunโ€™la resmen baลŸlayan 1915 Ermeni soykฤฑrฤฑmฤฑ (niye bรถyle adlandฤฑrdฤฑฤŸฤฑmฤฑ bir baลŸka yazฤฑda anlatacaฤŸฤฑm), esas olarak ฤฐttihat ve Terakki Cemiyetiโ€™nde (ฤฐTC) รถrgรผtlenmiลŸ olan Tรผrk milliyetรงiliฤŸinin, daฤŸฤฑlmakta olan Osmanlฤฑ ฤฐmparatorluฤŸuโ€™nun yerine Tรผrk ulus devletini kurmanฤฑn ilk adฤฑmฤฑ olarak รผlkeyi gayrimรผslim unsurlardan temizleme ve sermayenin MรผslรผmanlaลŸtฤฑrฤฑlmasฤฑ/TรผrkleลŸtirilmesi harekรขtฤฑydฤฑ.

Nitelikli suรง ortaklฤฑฤŸฤฑ

Bรถylesi bรผyรผk bir suรงun iลŸlenmesi elbette imparatorluk tebaasฤฑnฤฑn รถnemli bir kesiminin iลŸbirliฤŸi ile mรผmkรผn oldu. ฤฐTC, tehcir ve imhayฤฑ gerรงekleลŸtirirken, gerek Kรผrt, Tรผrk, ร‡erkes, Gรผrcรผ, Ermeni toplumlarฤฑ arasฤฑndaki, gerek Alevi, Sรผnni, Hฤฑristiyan, Ezidi toplumlarฤฑ arasฤฑndaki gerekse bรถlgeler, ลŸehirler, kรถyler, aลŸiretler ve hatta kiลŸiler arasฤฑndaki gerilimleri ustaca kullandฤฑ.

Bรถylece Ermenilere (ve elbette Rumlara, Sรผryanilere) yรถnelik kaรงฤฑrtma ve imha hareketlerinde ฤฐTCโ€™nin yeraltฤฑ รถrgรผtรผ TeลŸkilat-ฤฑ Mahsusaโ€™ya ve ordu birliklerine destek veren, birรงok yerde bu iลŸleri bizzat รถrgรผtleyen ve yรผrรผten Tรผrk, Kรผrt, ร‡erkes, ร‡eรงen, Gรผrcรผ gibi deฤŸiลŸik etnisitelerden Mรผslรผman gruplar arasฤฑnda โ€˜nitelikliโ€™ suรง ortaklฤฑฤŸฤฑ oluลŸturuldu. Geride kalan Ermeni mallarฤฑnฤฑ talan eden, Ermenilerin รงocuklarฤฑnฤฑ besleme veya evlatlฤฑk alan, kฤฑzlarฤฑnฤฑ haremlerine katan yerel eลŸraf ya da halk kesimleri, Ermenilerin el konulan zenginliklerini kendine sermaye yapan ticaret burjuvazisi, Ermenilerin boลŸalttฤฑฤŸฤฑ alanlarda kendine iลŸ alanฤฑ yaratan zanaatkรขrlar da bu bรผyรผk suรงun aรงฤฑk ya da zฤฑmni ortaklarฤฑ oldular.

Kรถtรผler

Tehcirin eylemci ekibinde, 3. Ordu Komutanฤฑ General Mahmud Kรขmil PaลŸa, Genelkurmay ฤฐstihbarat Dairesiโ€™nden Albay Seyfi, Harbiye Nazฤฑrฤฑ Enver PaลŸaโ€™nฤฑn amcasฤฑ Halil PaลŸa ve รผvey kardeลŸi Nuri (Kฤฑllฤฑgil) PaลŸa, Musulโ€™daki 6. Ordu Komutanฤฑ Ali ฤฐhsan Sabis PaลŸa, teลŸkilatฤฑn tetikรงisi Yakup Cemil ve โ€˜Deliโ€™ Halit (Karsฤฑalan) gibi Harbiye mezunlarฤฑ, ฤฐTC Merkez Komitesi รผyeleri Bahaeddin ลžakir, Nazฤฑm ya da Diyarbakฤฑr Valisi Mehmet ReลŸit gibi doktorlar, โ€˜Sopalฤฑ Mutasarrฤฑfโ€˜ lakaplฤฑ Trabzon Valisi Cemal Azmi, รถnce Erzincan Bรถlge Valisi, daha sonra Bitlis, BaฤŸdat ve Musul vilayetlerinin genel valisi olan Mehmet Memduh, Maarif Nazฤฑrฤฑ Ahmet ลžรผkrรผ, Emniyet Mรผdรผrรผ ฤฐsmail Canbolat gibi yรผksek bรผrokratlar, Giresunlu Topal Osman AฤŸa ve Trabzonlu Yahya Kahya gibi eลŸraftan olanlar, Malatya Mรผftรผsรผ Sagirzade gibi din adamlarฤฑ vardฤฑ.

Elbette, en korkunรง suรงlarฤฑ iลŸleyenler tehcir konvoylarฤฑna, Osmanlฤฑ tarihinde o gรผne dek eลŸine rastlanmadฤฑk bir barbarlฤฑk iรงinde saldฤฑran, konvoylarฤฑ yaฤŸmalayan deฤŸiลŸik toplumlardan gelen รงete reisleri ve รงete รผyeleriydi. Bu barbarlฤฑฤŸฤฑn temel nedeni, bu รงeteleri oluลŸturan kadrolarฤฑn bรผyรผk bir bรถlรผmรผnรผn ฤฐTC Merkez Komitesi รผyeleri Dr. Bahaeddin ลžakir ve Dr. Nazฤฑm tarafฤฑndan kana susamฤฑลŸ caniler arasฤฑndan รถzenle seรงilmiลŸ olmalarฤฑydฤฑ. Bunlar, sรถzรผ edilen korkunรง gรถrevleri yerine getirmeleri kaydฤฑyla, รถzel emirlerle hapishanelerden salฤฑverilmiลŸlerdi.

ฤฐyiler

Buna karลŸฤฑlฤฑk Ermenilerin รถldรผrรผlmesine karลŸฤฑ รงฤฑktฤฑฤŸฤฑ iรงin รถldรผrรผlen, Ermenileri evlerinde saklayan, Ermenileri korumak iรงin hayatฤฑnฤฑ tehlikeye atan yรถneticiler ve halk kesimleri de vardฤฑ. ร–rneฤŸin 1914โ€™ten itibaren sฤฑrasฤฑyla Halep ve Konya ValiliฤŸinde bulunan Celal Bey, vilayetindeki Ermenilerin tehcirine izin vermemiลŸti. Kendisine bu kanlฤฑ yolculuฤŸun โ€˜milli mefkรปreโ€™ olduฤŸunu sรถyleyen ฤฐTC Merkez Komitesiโ€™nin adamฤฑna โ€œHangi milli mefkรปre? Tรผrkler ve Mรผslรผmanlar, bu cinayetlerden dolayฤฑ kan aฤŸlฤฑyor, fakat engellemek iรงin รงare bulamฤฑyorlardฤฑ. Bรถyle zulรผmlere milli mefkรปre demek, millet iรงin en bรผyรผk iftira ve hakarettirโ€ diye cevap vermiลŸti ve 1915 Ekiminde gรถrevden alฤฑnฤฑncaya kadar รงevre illerden de pek รงok kiลŸinin de Der Zorโ€™a gรถnderilmesini engellemiลŸti. Ankara Valisi Mazhar Bey, vilayetindeki Ermenilerin gรถnderilmesine karลŸฤฑ รงฤฑktฤฑฤŸฤฑ iรงin 1915 AฤŸustosunda gรถrevinden alฤฑnmฤฑลŸtฤฑ. Mazhar Bey tehcire neden karลŸฤฑ รงฤฑktฤฑฤŸฤฑnฤฑ ลŸรถyle aรงฤฑklamฤฑลŸtฤฑ: โ€œBen valiyim, eลŸkฤฑya deฤŸilim.โ€

Ermeni รงocuklarฤฑnฤฑn eฤŸitimden yoksun kalmamasฤฑ iรงin bir okul aรงtฤฑrdฤฑ ve baลŸฤฑna bir Ermeni'yi mรผdรผr olarak atadฤฑ.

Kastamonu Valisi ReลŸat Bey, Yozgat Mutasarrฤฑfฤฑ Cemal Bey ve Erzurum Valisi Tahsin Bey de imha emirlerini uygulamadฤฑlar. Bir ฤฐTC รผyesinin oฤŸlu tarafฤฑndan โ€œgavurlarฤฑ koruduฤŸuโ€ iรงin รถldรผrรผldรผ.

Tehcir emirlerini uygulamayฤฑ reddeden Lice Kaymakamฤฑ Hรผseyin Nesimi Bey, BeลŸiri Kaymakam Muavini Sabit Bey, Basra Valisi Ferit Bey, Mรผntefek Mutasarrฤฑfฤฑ Bedii Nuri Bey ve gazeteci ฤฐsmail Mestan, ฤฐTCโ€™nin ileri gelenlerinden Diyarbakฤฑr Valisi Dr. ReลŸit Beyโ€™in emirleriyle รถldรผrรผldรผler. Mardin Mutasarrฤฑfฤฑ Hilmi Bey ise, son anda รถlรผmden kurtuldu.

Urfaโ€™da BinbaลŸฤฑ Sฤฑtkฤฑ Bey Sรผryani cemaatinin ve Ermeni Katoliklerinin liderlerini รถlรผmden kurtarmฤฑลŸtฤฑ. Urfalฤฑ Hacฤฑ Halil, aynฤฑ aileden yedi kiลŸiyi katliamdan kurtarmak iรงin evinin tavan arasฤฑnda saklamฤฑลŸtฤฑ.

Ayrฤฑca Trabzon bรถlgesinin ve Kastamonuโ€™nun bir kฤฑsฤฑm Sรผnni Tรผrk halkฤฑ, Konyalฤฑ Mevleviler, Mardinli Sรผryaniler, Sincarlฤฑ Yezidiler ve Dersimli KฤฑzฤฑlbaลŸ aลŸiretlerinin bรผyรผk รงoฤŸunluฤŸu Ermenileri korumuลŸtu. Dersimโ€™in dฤฑลŸ รงeperlerini oluลŸturan Arapkir, EฤŸin, Gรผrรผn, Kemah, Erzincan, Tercan, KiฤŸฤฑ ve Paluโ€™da ise Ermenilere yรถnelik talan saldฤฑrฤฑlarฤฑ yanฤฑnda ciddi katliamlar olmuลŸtu.

Konya Valisi Celal Beyโ€™in anฤฑlarฤฑ

Yazฤฑmฤฑzฤฑ โ€˜iyi Tรผrklerโ€™den Konya Valisi Celal Beyโ€™in 1919โ€™da Vakit gazetesinde yayฤฑmlanan โ€œErmeni Vakayiโ€™i, Esbรขb ve Tesiratฤฑโ€ (Ermeni Olayฤฑ, Sebepleri ve Etkileri) baลŸlฤฑklฤฑ anฤฑlarฤฑndan bir bรถlรผm ile bitirelim:

ร‡รผnkรผ รงetecidir. Hรผkรผmet ise sadece kabahat sahibi olanlarฤฑ takip eder. DoฤŸru yanlฤฑลŸ, vatanฤฑn selameti iรงin Ermenilerin bulunduklarฤฑ yerlerden รงฤฑkarฤฑlmalarฤฑ lazฤฑm addedilmiลŸse, iลŸbu tarzda mฤฑ tatbik edilir? Ermenileri Zorโ€™a sevk edin diye emir veren hรผkรผmet, bu bรฎรงarelerin oralarda Arap gรถรงebe kabileleri arasฤฑnda meskensiz, gฤฑdasฤฑz nasฤฑl barฤฑnabileceklerini dรผลŸรผndรผ mรผ? DรผลŸรผndรผ ise soruyorum: Oralara ne kadar gฤฑda maddesi gรถnderdi ve gรถรงmenlerin iskรขnฤฑ iรงin kaรง hane yaptฤฑrdฤฑ? Ve Ermeniler gibi asฤฑrlardan beri yerleลŸmiลŸ bir hayat sรผren bir kavmi, aฤŸaรงtan, sudan ve her tรผrlรผ inลŸaat malzemesinden mahrum olan Zor รงรถllerine sevk etmekte maksat neydi? Maalesef, meseleyi inkรขr ve รงarpฤฑtmaya imkรขn yok.

ฤฐTC Merkez-i Umumisi, Balkan Harbiโ€™nden evvel Makedonya meselesinin de kolayca halline giriลŸti. Azalarฤฑndan birinin fikrince, Makedonya meselesi bir nรผfus meselesi imiลŸ. EฤŸer ฤฐslam nรผfus รงoฤŸalฤฑrsa mesele kendiliฤŸinden halledilirmiลŸ. (โ€ฆ) ฤฐki rakam arasฤฑndaki nispeti tayin iรงin ya rakamlardan birini bรผyรผtmek veya diฤŸerini kรผรงรผltmek lazฤฑm gelir!.. Rumeliโ€™deki nรผfus arasฤฑndaki farkฤฑ deฤŸiลŸtirmek iรงin Bulgarlarฤฑ, Rumlarฤฑ, Sฤฑrplarฤฑ mahva imkรขn yoktu. Onun iรงin Basraโ€™dan ฤฐslam muhacirleri getirmeye teลŸebbรผs ettiler.

Ermenilerin mahvฤฑnฤฑ tanzim ettiler. Bunu sฤฑrf Merkez-i Umumi deฤŸil, o zamanki hรผkรผmet de tatbik etti. Bรถyle olmasaydฤฑ, katliama iลŸtirak etmeyen kaymakamlar รถldรผrรผldรผฤŸรผ, mutasarrฤฑflar ve valiler azledildiฤŸi halde, iลŸtirak edenler terfi etmezdi. Ve tehcir iลŸleri, ฤฐttihat ve Terakki mensuplarฤฑnฤฑn denetimi altฤฑnda cereyan etmezdi.

ฤฐmdi, bence meselenin en mรผhim noktasฤฑna geliyorum.

Ben Osmanlฤฑ memleketinin bugรผnkรผ halini Erzurum vilayetinin yukarฤฑda tasvir ettiฤŸim haline benzetiyorum. Yani bรผtรผn memlekette iki sฤฑnฤฑf halk var. Biri hukuka tecavรผzle menfaat elde eden zorbalar, diฤŸeri, bu zorbalarฤฑn tecavรผzรผyle ezilmiลŸ olan Tรผrkler, Araplar, Ermeniler...

Hepimiz iรงin felaketin doฤŸuลŸ sebepleri bir!.. Vatanฤฑndan ayrฤฑlarak yollarda รถlen veya รถldรผrรผlen Ermenilerle, Cezire ve Suriye รงรถllerinde, Erzurum daฤŸlarฤฑnda aรงlฤฑktan, hastalฤฑktan, sฤฑcaktan telef olan veya telef edilen Tรผrkler ve Suriyeโ€™de aรงlฤฑktan sokaklarda inleye inleye รถlen Araplarฤฑn ve Cemal PaลŸaโ€™nฤฑn kanunuyla ipe รงekilen ve sรผrgรผn yerlerinde sefalet iรงinde kalan uฤŸursuz kuvvet aynฤฑ kuvvettir. Birbirimizi suรงlamaktansa, el ele verip medeni dรผnyadan adalet dilemek ve asฤฑrlardan beri kardeลŸรงe yaลŸamฤฑลŸ olan Araplarฤฑ, Tรผrkleri ve Ermenileri bu hale getirenlerin cezasฤฑnฤฑ istemek ve henรผz vakit geรงmemiลŸ ise, bundan bรถyle yine kardeลŸรงe yaลŸamaya รงalฤฑลŸmak pek uygun olur.โ€

Reverse Geocoding is Hard

shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/04/reverโ€ฆ

My wife and I run OpenBenches - a crowd-sourced database of nearly 40,000 memorial benches. Every bench is geo-tagged with a latitude and longitude. But how do you go from a string of digits to something human readable?

How do I turn -33.755780,150.603769 into "42 Wallaby Way, Sydney, Australia"?

Luckily, that's a (somewhat) solved problem. Services like OpenCage, StadiaMaps, OpenStreetMap, and Geocode.Earth all provide APIs which transform co-ordinates into addresses. Done! Let's go home.

Exceptโ€ฆ Not everywhere has an address. Some benches are in parks. They typically don't have a street number, but might have an interesting feature nearby to help with location. For example a statue or prominent landmark.

Andโ€ฆ Not every address is relevant. Some benches are on streets. But we probably don't want to imply that the bench is inside or belongs to a specific nearby house.

Let's step back a bit. Why do we want to display a human-readable address?

We have two use-cases.

"As a visitor to the site, I want to:"

  1. Read a (rough) textual representation of where the bench is.
  2. Click on a component of the address to see all benches within that area.

The first is easy to explain:

Map. Under it is an address of "Middlewich, Cheshire East, England, United Kingdom".

The second is harder. Suppose a bench is in Wellington, New Zealand. We want to create a URl like openbenches.org/location/New Zealand/Wellington/. That way, users can click on the word "Wellington" and find all the benches nearby. A user can also manually edit that URl to increase or decrease precision.

Both of these are problems of precision.

Let's take a look at how one of the reverse geocoding services deals with transforming 51.476845,-0.295296 into an address:

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Sandycombe Road, Kew, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, London, Greater London, England, TW9 2EN, United Kingdom

That is too much address!

Yes, it is technically accurate. But it contains far too much detail for humans, the postcode is irrelevant, and the weird-subdivisions are nothing that a local person would use.

Looking at the full API response, we can see:
JSON{ "place_id": 258770727, "licence": "Data ยฉ OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0. osm.org/copyright "name": "Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew", "display_name": "Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Elizabeth Cottages, Kew, London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, London, Greater London, England, TW9 3NJ, United Kingdom", "address": { "leisure": "Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew", "road": "Elizabeth Cottages", "suburb": "Kew", "city_district": "London Borough of Richmond upon Thames", "ISO3166-2-lvl8": "GB-RIC", "city": "London", "state_district": "Greater London", "state": "England", "ISO3166-2-lvl4": "GB-ENG", "postcode": "TW9 3NJ", "country": "United Kingdom", "country_code": "gb" }}
Aha! Perhaps I can build a better address using just those components!

Exceptโ€ฆ Not every country has states. And not all states are used when giving addresses. Not every location is in a city. Some places have villages, prefectures, municipalities, and hamlets.

New York, New York is a valid address, but Berlin, Berlin is not!

There's an address formatter by OpenCage which is pretty sensible about stripping off irrelevant details. But, to go back to my first point, not every map location on OpenBenches is a street address and - even if it is on a street - it probably shouldn't have a house number.

Well, there's kind of a solution to that! Most mapping provider have a POI function - we can find nearby things of interest and use them as a location.

Here's a bench in Cook County, Illinois, USA. The POI address is:
JSON{โ€ฆ "name": "Central Park", "coarse_location": "Des Plaines, IL, USA",โ€ฆ}
I assume there's only one Central Park in Des Plaines. Do people know that "Il" is Illinois? Would "Cook County" be useful?

On the subject of localisation, not everywhere speaks English. Do I want to display addresses like "ๅŽŸ็ˆ†ใฎๅญใฎๅƒ, ๅบƒๅณถ, ๆ—ฅๆœฌ"? How about "ๅŽŸ็ˆ†ใฎๅญใฎๅƒ, Hiroshima, Japan"?

We're an international site, but most benches are in Anglophone countries.

Of course, just because something is physically near a POI, that doesn't mean it is logically close to it.

Consider a bench situated at the edge of this parkA map, with a marker situated just across a river.

The nearest POI is "Gay's Creamery" - across the river. Is that what you'd expect? Is there any way to easily say "if a point is inside an amenity* then use that as the address?

I don't want the users of our site to have to select from a list of POIs or addresses, this should be as automated as possible.

The Plan

For each bench:

  1. Use StadiaMaps to get the nearest POI.
  2. Get the data in English.
  3. Concatenate the name and coarse location.
  4. Save the "address".
  5. Wait for complaints?

Thoughts?

I don't entirely understand what alternative is to be used instead of carbon/coal, but I know that wind turbine energy is killing a lot of birds that crash with the turbine wings and II have also read that solar panels are also killing birds and other animals too. Apparently there are other energy systems that are much better for the environment, but they are not being made public at the moment, so I can't share the information. One is related to splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen and both sea water and other sources of water could be used. There are other methods that were mentioned by Nikola Tesla but have been censored for a very long time, because they don't cost any money and that is the only thing that is of interest to most people!!

HPG: One Soldier Killed, Two Others Injured as Turkish Attacks Against Guerrilla Areas Continue

The Press Office of the Peopleโ€™s Defense Forces (HPG) reported that the Turkish army carried out 691 attacks on the guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) between April 21 and 23. Legitimate self-defense by the guerrillas left one soldier dead and two others injured.

According to the HPG statement on Thursday, details of the latest attacks by the Turkish army and interventions by the guerrillas are as follows:

Attacks by warplanes

On April 22, Turkish warplanes bombed the GirgaลŸรช and Girรช Kun areas in Garรช region three times, the Girรช Bahar Resistance Area in ลžehรฎd Delรฎl Western Zap region once and the Sipรฎndarรช area in Garรช region twice.

On April 23, warplanes bombed the Sipรฎndarรช and GirgaลŸรช areas in Garรช region four times, and the Girรช Bahar Resistance Area in ลžehรฎd Delรฎl Western Zap region once.

Attacks with heavy weapons, artillery and howitzers

On April 21, 22, 23 and 24, the Turkish army carried out 680 attacks with heavy weapons, artillery and howitzers, targeting the areas of ลžehรฎd Kawa and Berรช Zรฎnรช in Xakurkรช region three times; the areas of Mijรช, DรชreลŸรช, Sipรฎndarรช, GirgaลŸรช and Girรช Kun in Garรช region 102 times; the areas of ลžรชlazรช and BรชลŸรฎlรฎ in Metรฎna region 160 times; the areas of Girรช Amediyรช and Girรช Bahar in ลžehรฎd Delรฎl Western Zap region 415 times.

Interventions by our forces

On April 19, guerrillas struck a container belonging to the invaders who were in an attack position in Girรช Bahar Resistance Area in ลžehรฎd Delรฎl Batฤฑ Zap region.

On April 22, a surveillance camera system used by the invading Turkish army to spy on our war tunnels in Girรช Amediyรช Resistance Area in ลžehรฎd Delรฎl Western Zap region was hit and destroyed by our YJA Star (Free Womenโ€™s Troops) forces.

On April 22, the positions of the invaders who were in an attack position in the Girรช ร‡arรงel area in Metรฎna region were struck by our ลžehรฎd Axรฎn MรปลŸ Unit with a kamikaze drone. One soldier was confirmed killed and two others injured.

On April 22, a position of the invaders in the Girรช Bahar Resistance Area in ลžehรฎd Delรฎl Western Zap region was hit and damaged by our forces.

Warning to the people

HPG said they received information that money was being demanded in the name of their organization in the regions of Botan, Batman, and ร‡iyayรชmazรฎ and Derik in Mardin, particularly from businesspeople and some community circles. HPG made it clear that none of their units was tasked with such a mission, saying: โ€œCollecting money from the people in this way is prohibited by our movement. Those who demand money in these places are likely to be rent-seeking gangs or agents organized by the enemy. Our people and patriotic-democratic organizations should pay attention to this matter and be sensitive to such agents-gangs and should not give money under the name of aid.โ€

Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was a few meters from the finish line, but got confused by the signals and stopped, thinking he had finished the race.

The Spanish runner, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was happening in front of him, began shouting for the Kenyan to keep running.

Motai did not know Spanish and did not understand.

Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory.
One reporter asked Evan, "Why did you do this?" Evan replied, "My dream is that one day we can have the kind of community life that pushes ourselves and others to win as well."
"But why did you let the Kenyan win?" the reporter insisted. Evan replied, "I didn't let him win, he would win. It was his race."

The reporter insisted and asked again: "But you could have won!"

Evan looked at him and replied, "But what is the merit of my victory? What is the honor of this medal? What will my mother think?"

Influence of Wood Moisture on Charcoal Production

The process of transforming wood into charcoal is a highly complex thermochemical procedure known as pyrolysis. One of the most critical factors influencing the efficiency and quality of this process is the moisture content of the wood being used. Wood moisture not only affects the energy consumption of the pyrolysis reaction but also has a direct impact on the properties of the resulting charcoal. Understanding how varying moisture levels influence the conversion process can help optimize the production of high-quality charcoal while minimizing energy waste.

Role of Moisture in the Pyrolysis Process

Wood naturally contains moisture, which varies depending on the type of wood, its age, and environmental factors. This moisture must be evaporated before the actual pyrolysis can begin. In the pyrolysis process, as heat is applied to the wood, the moisture inside the wood needs to be expelled as water vapor. This phase consumes significant energy, which delays the onset of pyrolysis.

The presence of moisture essentially reduces the available heat for the wood charcoal machine, as a considerable portion of the energy goes into evaporating the water. As a result, the temperature inside the reactor may take longer to reach the required levels for effective carbonization. This can lead to extended processing times and lower yields of charcoal.

Impact on Energy Efficiency

The moisture content of wood has a direct bearing on the energy efficiency of the pyrolysis process. Higher moisture content means that more energy is spent on evaporating water, which decreases the efficiency of the conversion. For every unit of moisture present, energy that could have been used for pyrolysis is instead consumed in the water vaporization process. This is particularly relevant when using a wood charcoal machine that operates continuously, as the wood feedstock must be adequately dried before entering the reactor to avoid energy inefficiencies.

Low moisture content, on the other hand, improves energy efficiency. When wood with low moisture is used, the heat applied during pyrolysis is directed more effectively toward breaking down the woodโ€™s cellulose and lignin components rather than evaporating water. This results in a quicker onset of pyrolysis and a more efficient conversion of wood into charcoal, reducing the overall energy consumption in the process.

Effect on Charcoal Yield and Quality

The moisture level in wood directly influences both the yield and the quality of the charcoal produced. When wood with a high moisture content is pyrolyzed, the overall charcoal yield is often lower. This is because a significant portion of the wood's mass is lost as water vapor before the process of carbonization can occur. Moreover, the resulting charcoal tends to have lower carbon content and higher ash content due to the incomplete breakdown of the wood structure.

In contrast, wood with lower moisture content undergoes more efficient carbonization. The result is a higher yield of charcoal that has a better structure and composition. Additionally, the charcoal produced from low-moisture wood typically has better combustion properties, such as higher energy density and a slower burn rate. This makes it more suitable for applications like grilling or industrial heating, where high-quality and long-lasting fuel is required.

Wood Moisture and Charcoal Properties

The moisture content not only affects the quantity of the charcoal but also influences its chemical composition. Wood with a high moisture content tends to release more volatile gases during pyrolysis, which can affect the stability and consistency of the final charcoal product. The presence of moisture also leads to an increase in the amount of organic compounds remaining in the charcoal, which can cause it to burn less efficiently. Furthermore, the increased volatility can result in higher emissions during pyrolysis, which may require additional filtration or purification measures.

By ensuring that the wood is sufficiently dried before the pyrolysis process, producers can mitigate these issues and ensure the production of a more stable, efficient fuel. Wood with optimal moisture content results in a well-structured, high-carbon charcoal that is both more effective in its energy release and more durable in use.

Drying Techniques for Optimal Wood Moisture

To achieve the desired moisture content in the feedstock, proper drying techniques are essential. Air drying and kiln drying are common methods used to reduce the moisture content of wood before it is processed in a wood charcoal machine. Air drying is the more natural method, relying on ambient environmental conditions to slowly reduce moisture over time. While this method is cost-effective, it is also time-consuming and subject to weather variability.

Kiln drying, on the other hand, involves controlled heating to accelerate the drying process, making it more efficient but also more energy-intensive. Kiln drying can produce wood with a precise moisture content, ensuring a more consistent pyrolysis process. However, this comes at the cost of additional equipment and energy expenses.

Moisture Content and the Choice of Wood Charcoal Machine

Different wood charcoal machines may be designed with varying capacities and efficiencies, depending on the moisture content of the feedstock. Some machines are equipped with advanced heating systems capable of dealing with higher moisture wood, while others are optimized for low-moisture materials. Therefore, selecting the appropriate machine for the wood type being processed is crucial for ensuring optimal performance.

Machines that are specifically designed to handle higher moisture levels typically feature longer drying phases, which can affect the overall processing time. In contrast, machines optimized for dry wood can achieve faster processing times and higher charcoal yields. Manufacturers of wood charcoal machines often provide specifications on the acceptable moisture range for different types of wood, which should be carefully considered when preparing the feedstock.

Lโ€™aide active ร  mourir : un choix budgรฉtaire ?

En clair : vos souvenirs sur disque dur nโ€™auront pas dโ€™รฉtats dโ€™รขme, ni mรชme dโ€™รฉtat tout court.

Peut-รชtre.

Re this post from @Nonilex:

Zeynep Turkic said in 2017 that were building the machinery of an authoritarian dystopia to get more people to click on ads.

Hereโ€™s that talk. Show me the lie.

โThese [machine learning systems] only work if thereโ€™s an enormous amount of data, so they also encourage deep surveillance on all of us so that the machine learning algorithms can work. That's why Facebook wants to collect all the data it can about you.โž

This is deeply pernicious. Her example: researchers found that social media posts can predict when a bipolar person is entering a manic phase. Casinos have always aimed generic ads at such people โ€” but now they can individually pinpoint them, at their moment of maximum vulnerability.

in reply to Paul Cantrell

โHere's the tragedy: we're building this infrastructure of surveillance authoritarianism merely to get people to click on ads. And this won't be Orwell's authoritarianism. This isn't โ€œ1984.โ€ Now, if authoritarianism is using overt fear to terrorize us, weโ€™ll all be scared, but weโ€™ll know it, weโ€™ll hate it and weโ€™ll resist it.โž

โ€œHa!โ€ you cry, โ€œthat moment has arrived, and half the country isnโ€™t resisting โ€” they โ€ขlikeโ€ข it!โ€

Indeed. Read on:

in reply to Paul Cantrell

โBut if the people in power are using these algorithms to quietly watch us, to judge us and to nudge us, to predict and identify the troublemakers and the rebels, to deploy persuasion architectures at scale and to manipulate individuals one by one using their personal, individual weaknesses and vulnerabilities, and if they're doing it at scale through our private screens so that we don't even know what our fellow citizens and neighbors are seeing, that authoritarianism will envelop us like a spider's web and we may not even know we're in it.โž

She called it.

Doge has been hell-bent on stealing and merging government datasets: tax records, social security, health, immigrantion.

Listen to Tufekciโ€™s talk, and imagine what a group of technofascists could do with that data.

"Could do?". Have already done. Even during Brexit and the 2016 election it was clear that A/B tested propaganda as a service was being deployed at scale. The 2024 election was just the (literal) nail in the coffin of informed democracy.

AI will make the problem infinitely worse. It's primary optimization function is to sound convincing about anything, and it will rapidly displace relying on primary sources. Once that happens, it will be easier and easier to insert individually-tailored "alternative facts" into any narrative. The owners of this technology will be able to distort reality as they please.

The Hottest #AI #Job of 2023 Is Already #Obsolete

Two years ago, prompt #engineering was one of the buzziest jobs in tech, fetching salaries of up to $200,000 on the promise of becoming any #companyโ€™s โ€œAI Whisperer.โ€

Now, the role is basically obsolete thanks to the breakneck speed of AI #development and companiesโ€™ own maturity in terms of understanding how to use the #technology.

blah-blah-blah sitrep... #geeksitrep #geekings (*shrug*, gotta tag with something).

been a fair heft of geekings here in past couple days.

  • restored my wmrotate setup,
allowing me to kill my window-manager, moves to the next window-manager in the list (currently using a long list of everything interested in, interspersed with several openbox, for old faithful to fall back upon throughout), without losing my session, all apps remain running, unperturbed. (got notions of tweaking it to run it all within xfce~ but that's a mixed bag of advantages, and disadvantages (which sap will to follow through with those notions).

    • started a dk and sxhkd config. much enthused for dk. shall return. left it half done, when needed to just get on with things. dk's not poor out of the box, but i seek to implement my prefered sort of keybinds (e.g. esdf movement keys), and that was taking a little while, while other pressing matters were afoot. (see printer)

    • rediscovered my "tabular boonad" xmonad.hs still works (even though needs cleaning up the code to recompile with newer haskell). using it currently. ๐Ÿ˜€ such a joy. ... not that herbstluftwm isnt... but there are times when the advanced features become an incumberance more than a boon.

  • toyed with various cli/tui tools,

    • tvision
pain to install and use... ugly stuff... i may yet rummage through the forks to see if there's a cleaner one, or, keep looking for the alternative similar thing that i've forgotten... fairly sure more than 1 linux youtuber covered it months back...

    • diskonaut
fun utility, neglected for a while, glad to have such a thing back. okay, it's just an interactive tui disk usage analyser, so not a lot of fun, but puts a smile on my face.

    • various fish function tweaks (should likely commit to my dotfiles), which also includes a 24 hour set of shuffled playlists, so i get good sleep therapy, and a dose of uptempo in the mid-morning. ... could mibi do with slipping in a 3 rounds of wim hod method's guided breathing technique.

    • many other cli tools listed out to be poked at later.

  • much fiddling with my gentoo strata

    • tinytoot shaping up as a sort of main stratum, put it at top priority, and it's strictly minimal (without getting silly and hampering functionality, or taking much effort)

    • gentoo23 weirdly didnt like my st savedconfig/patches, which were identical as worked with tinytoot (... still some avenues to explore to sort that, though just decided to --deselect st from that stratum for now).

    • i started using /etc/portage/savedconfig and /etc/portage/patches. ๐Ÿ˜€ about time. only been a gentoo user for about 17 years (if including the 3 first years with just sabayon and toorox), and only been a suckless/st user forrrrr.... idk, a decade or so. Big smiles for starting to do that.

    • nousetoo
because it's fun to try keep everything at as minimal useflaggery possible. great education for what the system needs for what, when adding each useflag individually. ... yeah, really should be that hardcore, and leave make.conf's USE="-*" only. but, have added half a dozen universal useflags already, chickenshit. n_n ample work to fiddle with still, as is... especially since i have several other gentoo strata too.

    • twentooyet
i gotta sort this stratum. not sure what it was, where i left it... if it was a copy of decibel's world file and /etc/portage, or if it was left just as an empty test of upgrading to profile 23.0... but it, decibel, and gentoo23, methinks due to get replaced with just 1... maybe. yet to decide. 6 gentoos is overkill in this muddled arrangement. each those three stepping on each others toes.

    • decibel
the first stratum i added to this bedrocklinux install at the start of the year (upon abrupt os reinstall on jan 1st). serves well. but, have yet to get it upgraded to profile 23.0, but surely can just skip the official upgrade process with i distrust my ability to do without janking, even though i did the upgrade, testing in safe fresh gentoo23 stratum... or was that twentooyet i did that on... noh, iirc, twentooyet was the test fetch...

    • other strata and final planned strata list
      alpine
      artix
      bedrock
      ceres
      -decibel
      devuan
      funtoo
      -gentoo23
      nousetoo
      tinytoot
      -twentooyet
      void
and will add what will be called just gentoo, to replace decibel, gentoo23, and twentooyet. keeping tinytoot and nousetoo. tinytoot stratum handy for regular daily upgrades (for the core essentials of my usecase) without disruption. the bigger fully-(over)loaded gentoo stratum, likely upgraded nearer fortnightly.

  • printer

    • i got a printer! ... buuuuut, yet to get it printing. dbus sees it. got various things installed for it... but print dialogues still, only at best, show lp and boduku (or whatever the print scheduler thing is called)... cups daemon running, hplip stuff installed... idk... the world wont likely explode if i fail to get these registration papers printed out, filled in and sent. i hope. I probably shouldnt have -cups useflagged my gentoos, heh, hindsight. but nah, will get this working yet.

  • and managed to keep up the physiotherapy amidst all this geeking. ๐Ÿ˜€
  • and managed to keep up various theological/philosophical/sociological/anthropological conversations/debates too, and even managed to offer a couple tidbits of technical help, rather than just philosophical motivation. n_n
  • and more too, i'm failing to recall before i jump to post this.
in reply to Digit

oh i forgot about dk.
... still on the back burner... a little dry by now, so maybe this comment will help splash a little more water on the idea... keep it good for when i get around to it again.

living it up in xmonad utterly satisfied (... oh, well, maybe one quirk i could still iron out to a better workflow... always is... heh).

... actually, i think i hastily re-wrote my xmonad config from scratch, a few weeks/months back. ... which is something i didnt know i could do. ... the haskell, as much as it enthuses, also still daunts... but perhaps there's less daunt due than perceptions hold on to.

(especially these days with little leg-ups from llm to remind of things expediently... is good as advanced websearch sort of way)
