Someone came to me and said that their phone said that a phone call they were on was recorded. They're an immigrant and was talking to their sibling who is also an immigrant. They were on cell (old android), sibling was on a land line.
It's possible they touched the wrong icon in their phone app that did the recording.
Has anyone heard of this being done by the guvmint? It makes no sense they would inform you they recorded but I have to ask.

I know some versions of IOS and certain android phones have call recording capabilities. There are probably apps one can get, and I believe Samsung included something at one point (no idea of they do currently). So, it's entirely *possible* that this person did it themselves. For peace of mind, I'd be going through every app on my phone trying to figure out what app or setting was involved and I would do away with it.
I suspect that you'd never know if the Good Ol Boy Gestapo did it.

Antes de falar sobre o que é Misceverse (frequentemente também alternado com Miscecanis/abreviado como Misce), é preciso explicar um pouco sobre o que é o Omegaverse (também popularmente conhecido como universo A/B/O, abreviação de Alfa/Beta/Ômega).
O Omegaverse é um tropo sexual em que as pessoas têm papéis biológicos definidos com base em um sistema hierárquico. Nesse sistema, existem três dinâmicas principais (também referidos como “gêneros secundários”), cada uma com suas próprias características biológicas e comportamentais, muitas vezes semelhantes às de animais. A própria terminologia é inspirada em um estudo antigo sobre o comportamento de lobes — embora esse estudo tenha sido baseado em uma compreensão equivocada do comportamento lupino e, portanto, não seja cientificamente acurado.
Nesse universo, quem ocupa o topo da hierarquia são ês Alfas, que costumam apresentar um comportamento dominante e temperamental. Biologicamente, quando excitades, Alfas podem desenvolver um "knot" (estrutura de tecido erétil no genital de mamíferos canídeos), que facilita a impregnação de Ômegas. Essa função pode variar de acordo com a adaptação de cada autore, mas não é exclusiva de Alfas designades homens ao nascer.
Betas ocupam uma posição subordinada em relação aês Alfas na hierarquia e são considerades como tendo uma "biologia normal", sem as características presentes em Alfas e Ômegas. Em termos simples, seria como se Betas fossem como nós nesse universo. Elus geralmente têm uma personalidade mais calma e conciliadora. Em algumas versões do Omegaverse, Betas podem engravidar Ômegas, mas isso varia de universo para universo.
Ômegas estão na base da hierarquia, geralmente retratades como submisses e doces. Elus podem engravidar e entram no cio. Ômegas perissexo designados homens ao nascer podem ter a capacidade de se auto-lubrificar e serem impregnades por Alfas. Frequentemente são retratades como frágeis.
Esses papéis costumam ser bastante deterministas, mas há pessoas que tentam romper com essas convenções em suas histórias, questionando a ideia de que tode Alfa precisa ser agressive, tode Beta precisa ser pacificadore e tode Ômega precisa ser submisse e inferior aês Alfas. Também há narrativas que rompem com a ideia de que Alfas só podem se relacionar com Ômegas (e vice-versa), criando histórias com pares como Alfa/Alfa, Ômega/Ômega e outras combinações.
Além disso, existem obras que exploram dinâmicas alternativas além das três principais, embora essas outras dinâmicas tenham papéis menos definidos. O Omegaverse é um universo rico e diverso, que não pode ser resumido a um único formato ou interpretação.
Misceverse
No dia 23 de junho de 2020, ê usuárie do Tumblr “spaceyomega” perguntou por uma tag específica para pessoas interessadas em adaptar elementos do Omegaverse ao seu dia a dia, desejando uma forma de conectar-se com outras pessoas que compartilhassem esse interesse. Logo em seguida, outre usuárie chamade “pack-the-pack” sugeriu que elus usassem os termos “miscecanis” ou “miscelupis”, cuja etimologia vem de misceo (misturar) e canis (cão)/lupus (lobo).
Supõe-se que, a partir daí, as pessoas passaram a usar o termo Miscecanis (mais comum do que miscelupis) no Tumblr para se referirem àquelas interessadas em adotar elementos do universo Omegaverse em suas vidas. Isso inclui pessoas que se identificam como alfas, betas, ômegas (ou com outras dinâmicas), e que utilizam terminologias próprias desse universo — como a ideia de possuir um scent (aroma específico e pessoal), fazer um nest (ninho — geralmente associado a ômegas), adotar dinâmicas de grupo semelhantes às de uma matilha (pack), entre outras práticas.
Em 6 de setembro de 2023, pack-the-pack criou uma bandeira Miscecanis com os seguintes significados:
Verde-azulado: simboliza o Legado. O legado que recebemos enquanto comunidade ao longo dos anos, bem como o legado que deixamos para as futuras gerações que possam encontrar conforto e/ou acolhimento no omegaverse e no estilo de vida miscecanis.
Turquesa: simboliza a Fluidez. Não apenas do conceito do Omegaverse em si, com sua natureza em constante transformação, mas também da comunidade miscecanis e de seus indivíduos.
Branco: simboliza a Liberdade. A liberdade que muitos de nós sentimos ao nos identificarmos como Miscecanis. Liberdade que pode aliviar dores, sentimentos de inadequação e disforia. Liberdade para sermos quem realmente somos e sentirmos o que realmente sentimos.
Amarelo: simboliza o Orgulho e o Amor-Próprio. Ao nos identificarmos como miscecanis, nos amamos mais do que odiamos aqueles que nos odeiam e ridicularizam todos os dias. Ao nos identificarmos como miscecanis, nos amamos por quem somos, apesar das percepções negativas.
Dourado: simboliza a Comunidade. A comunidade que construímos para nós mesmos, baseada em apoio mútuo, amor e aceitação.
Roxo: simboliza a Unidade. Unidade entre todos os aspectos citados acima, assim como unidade de espírito com nossos semelhantes miscecanis.
A Lua: Nem crescente, nem minguante — a lua em quarto crescente virada para baixo representa ambos os estágios. Simboliza Renascimento e Introspecção do Eu ao mesmo tempo.
A Estrela de Quatro Pontas: representa as três dinâmicas clássicas (Alfa, Beta e Ômega) + as Dinâmicas Terciárias. Os pequenos picos entre os braços da estrela representam as experiências intermediárias entre as dinâmicas que também existem em nossa comunidade.
Sobre a proposta inicial do termo, o blog “miscealignment” (também administrado por pack-the-pack) explicou o seguinte:
“At first it was more just people that performed as their chosen dynamics as a form of self-expression and as you said it, finding comfort and happiness in what Omegaverse-aligned behaviour could offer them. But as more and more people flocked towards the term, the more I noticed that it wasn't just people essentially role-playing, but people who genuinely identified as one of the dynamics. Either as a part of their gender identity and expression, their sexuality, or both.”

the misceverse is a community of people who take concepts/practices from the omegaverse fictional world and apply it to their own real lives - whether that’s in gender identify, lifestyle, etc. “misceverse” is kind of an umbrella term, there are more specific terms that align with certain animal groups that people use if they feel more connected to those, like miscecanis for more dog/wolf centered feelings, experiences, identities, miscefelis for felines, and many others for different animal groups! one important thing to note is that this isn’t pretend or role play for the people in the misce community, it’s our real identities, feelings, and experiences.
because it’s so intwined with each person’s identity, there are so many different ways it shows up in people’s lives - whether they have a designated scent for themselves, identify with specific characteristics of the label they identify with (like whether or not someone experiences “typical” omega things if they identify as an omega), how they feel about packs/finding a pack for themselves, heat/rut cycles, etc.
at its core, it’s about adopting parts of the omegaverse that align and resonate with YOU and making it a part of your day to day life and incorporating it into your identity 😀
a common misconception is that the misceverse is inherently sexual, which is not necessarily true. for some people it is and for some people it isn’t, and that’s for them to decide! at the end of the day it’s about your gender and your lifestyle!

O misceverse é uma comunidade de pessoas que pegam conceitos e práticas do universo ficcional do Omegaverse e aplicam em suas vidas reais, seja em identidade de gênero, estilo de vida etc. “Misceverse” é um termo guarda-chuva. Existem termos mais específicos relacionados a grupos de animais com os quais as pessoas se identificam, como miscecanis (pra quem sente conexão com cães ou lobes), miscefelis (para felines), e muitos outros para diferentes grupos. Uma coisa importante de destacar é que isso não é faz de conta nem roleplay pra quem faz parte da comunidade misce. São identidades, sentimentos e experiências reais.

Dinâmicas/Gêneros secundários
Como mencionado anteriormente, existem outras dinâmicas ou gêneros secundários além de Alfa, Beta e Ômega. No entanto, essas configurações não são claramente definidas, já que variam de acordo com cada história dentro do omegaverse ou com a interpretação pessoal de cada indivíduo na comunidade misce.
Como os nomes do trio principal vêm de letras do alfabeto grego, outras dinâmicas seguem essa mesma lógica, utilizando letras como: Gama, Delta, Épsilon, Zeta, Eta, Teta, Iota, Kappa, Lambda, Mi, Ni, Xi, Ômicron, Pi, Rô, Sigma, Tau, Ípsilon, Fi, Chi e Psi. Algumas letras antigas do alfabeto grego também foram resgatadas como inspirações para novas dinâmicas, como San e Digama, entre outras.
Uma dinâmica ou gênero secundário à parte é Enigma, que não é baseado em nenhuma letra do alfabeto grego. Trata-se de uma dinâmica rara, retratada em poucas obras dentro do omegaverse. Enigmas são geralmente descrites como um tipo de alfa ainda mais poderoso, ocupando uma posição acima dês demais. Costumam ser representades como indivíduos com grande capacidade de resistir a instintos, extremamente carismátiques e com uma presença tão marcante que conseguem impor sua vontade sobre qualquer ume. Em algumas interpretações, também possuem a habilidade de impregnar qualquer outra dinâmica, inclusive alfas.
Além disso, existem dinâmicas inspiradas em elementos como plantas, animais e outros conceitos — conhecidas como xenodinâmicas, baseadas no conceito de xenogênero.
Também há termos para descrever a experiência de possuir múltiplas dinâmicas ou gêneros secundários, como bidinâmica, tridinâmica e o termo mais amplo, multidinâmica. Algumas configurações multidinâmica também recebem nomes próprios (como Aega, que citei anteriormente).
Transdinâmica é um termo para se referir à transição da dinâmica atribuído à pessoa no momento de sua apresentação (gênero secundário) para outro que corresponde à sua identidade pessoal. Não é um termo que surgiu na comunidade misce, mas é adotado por algumas pessoas. Há termos específicos para transições de uma dinâmica para outra, como AtO (Alpha to Omega), BtA (Beta to Alpha) e assim por diante.
Adinâmica ou sem-dinâmica se refere a pessoas que não se identificam com nenhuma dinâmica.

gcc 15.1 --> gcc 14.3,0
Summary: we have silently rebuilding from ground up with gcc 14.3 and if all goes well we will be retracting from gcc15 back to 14. The reason is a month after 15 was released 14 received a serious upgrade fine-tuning it to be the best compiler in existence, without the strict demand of gcc15.
While in the end of April arch suddenly jumped from gcc 14.2,1 to 15.1.0 we followed, not very critically and educated on the specifics. gcc15 promised a ton but if and when the entire upstream community would comply with their changes, which has created major hickups, especially in the area of reproducibility. If you have noticed upgrades from arch and therefore ourselves have been very sporadic. It is the end of the month and arch releases an image they attempt to make as stable as possible, so upgrades usually drom in the last week of the month.
We used this calm season to spend every milligram of computing juice to rebuild. We upgraded glibc, libtool, binutils if upgrades were available, reverted linux-api-headers back to 5.15 from 6.6, and retune the system for higher stability and reliability. There are many things we like to keep in the cutting edge of upstream development but build-tool-chain doesn't need to be in the bleeding edge. Especially when the kernel itself is resisting to adopt all changes required by gcc15, and since we build still kernels frozen in Oct 2024 it feels awkward to have to use gcc14 for the kernels and gcc15 for everything else.
Just last week gcc 14.3.0 came out, a month after gcc15.1 was out and with great promises due to bug fixes and refinement. The speed superiority of gcc15 didn't materialize in a significant way, and the feeling from gcc 14.3.0 is very very good. Void still in this moment is using 14.2.0- April 5/25 release.
We believe this is the best of both worlds. We are also re/building software that readily failed to rebuild with gcc15, so this is a great step forwards even if it appears as retracting.
The practical issue will be how smoothly the upgrade to an earlier version number gcc will go. Hopefully a simple tag "replaces=gcc ... 15.." will suffice.
With all tests succeeding, with a 2 machines with equivalent installations running software build with 15 but running on gcc14-libs and vice-versa hasn't showed any issues. Theoretically, once something is compiled and build successfully it doesn't matter what gcc libs you have installed. We even have old discontinued software built on gcc11 many equinoxes ago.
Bottom line: If you are in the process of rebuilding an optimized machine from scratch, be a few days patient till we finish updating the code. What is currently on git.disroot reflects the changes already that don't match binaries (binutils, linux-api-headers, libtool, glibc, gcc) but we need to also run rolling updates on the current binaries. In other words joborun now is forked, upgrades from core and extra come out of a builder with gcc15 while the other builder is building on the new tool chain.
What we committed to do and its practical applications
After the late October 2024 removal of developers/maintainers of the linux code by the heads of the project on the basis of the natinality and origin of their employers (not in terms of ability, character, and quality of contributions) and the nationalist racist remarks that accompanied the removal (some nonsense about baseless history of Finland ) we had decided to halt following development of the kernel, and just rebuild the last editions of 5.10/5.15/6.6 .. of the time, we are now seeing this becoming harder to do for the following reasons.
1 It is evident through interaction with users that this intent is not shared by the user base, which can also be perceived positively as users in order to get the latest of kernel development were forced to build their own. If they make this leap of building a kernel for their system then they can build everything we offer, which was a very encouraged objective since day one. So we seem compelled to admit that our criteria in this manner are not widely shared, not in practical terms anyhow.
2 We anticipated that there would have been a fork of the kernel critically adopting development of current and LTS kernels without admitting new corporate product code. There was one initiative CINUX early on that froze in time and received no commits. We haven't been able to find any other projects.
3 As we were traumatized to discover gcc15 rebasing its libC from 17 to 23 was unable to compile the kernels as they were. Many other software have the same problem, and arch either uses a 2nd batch of gcc branded gcc14 (huge) or exporting a build flag for gcc to use 11 or 17 as its base to compile, but doing so sufficiently slower and less efficiently than gcc 14. Eventually the kernels that are current and marked as LTS will receive changes so they can comply with 23 standards and could compile with gcc15 without any hacky measures such as those used by arch lately.
4 We have moved back to gcc 14 but in the latest stable edition released late May (14.3.0) and we have been happily building since using this new tool chain. We needed to see whether kernels would compile and build as they did in the past, and we were successful. So we built the latest edition of linux 5.15.184
5 So for now we violated our declaration of boycotting the LinFo/US-SD tendencies and racism to provide an alternative. Since 5.10 has had much longer development we will keep rebuilding that late October 2024 edition for now. With linux 6.6 we are ambivolent, and next release may see a build. Since kernels built before 4/29/25 are kept in the frozen 429 project repository, this is becoming enormous to keep 6 kernels and headers in our "free" repository. The idea behind 429 was to provide an alternative to Arch's gcc15 move, which since our re-edition of gcc14 it has lost its purpose.

For those who are concerned on that move back on Oct 2024 stick to the "safe" editions as listed before here and in an article at sysdfree.wordpress.com For those who think "development" of the latest kernel is of their interest get that binary. All lts kernels have a tentrative death day on Dec 2026, except for 6.1 getting one extra year. 5.4 is out this December. If you think things will continue to roll as they have in the past place your bet. All indications show that something dramatic is cooking under the drama we witness from kernel to gnu/gcc to X, to wayland. Someone is shaking the pan underneath and heads are rolling due to those moves.
Maybe joborun appeared just in the right time of getting one clean last healthy system before it all turns to crap. I'd keep copies of images and repos, you never know when we are going to need older/cleaner ones when crap gets revealed.

I think it is more of a matter of consciousness than a practical/technical issue. Just like strict FOSS/libre sw and not-so-free software. In debian in order to use non-free firmware you must enable the non-free repositories, and if that is the only way to make your machine work, who is there to judge you? If you say I'd rather not use wifi than use non-free software, all power to you.
But some how and someone needs to speak up about what is going on, and the loudest voice is the collective voice. Hiding behind some legality of "Open Free" software, abiding by "war-time" passive-aggressive doctrine of the type "whoever does business with them is not our friend and our friends better not be working together with our enemies", then dumping long term "co-workers" on the basis of their national origin or that of their employer, is way beyond what I would perceive as free. It is abiding by fascism and doing so unilaterally as the sole dictator of the project.
Remember one of the 12 dumped wasn't even removed from the list, he quit in protest of that happened.

Running Android apps on another system than Android requires a container, like what Waydroid implements. Waydroid is based on LineageOS, based on Android 10, and can access any needed hardware. It can run Android apps on x86 or ARM cpus, it's fully open source, it can add your Android apps to your menu, it can display apps in their own windows or fullscreen, it can display the Android Ui for navigation, and has near native performance.
Waydroid lets you install .APK applications, which you can download online relatively easily, but to begin with, you might want to get an app store, which will make this process a lot simpler. Let's go with F Droid, which has tons of open source applications for Android, that will also work on Waydroid.

You'll then have to restart the system service for Waydroid, using
sudo sysctemctl start waydroid-container
Your app should now be added to your applications menu, and you can open it through there. From F-Droid, you can install any application you want, and they'll also get automatically added to your applications menu. Of course, at first install, you'll need to enable installing applications from an untrusted source, like on a "real" android device.
You can also add the Google Apps and the Play Services.
I left a link to the install instructions, it's not an easy, one click install by any means, and you'll have to run multiple command lines, install a few packages on your distro, register your "fake device" with Google, clear the Play Store cache, install magisk and more. Once that's done, though, you do get a fully functional Android system, complete with Google apps, and the Google Play Store. You can login with your Google account, and use Waydroid as a full Android system.
App apps that require the Google Play Services will also work, including youtube, Google Maps, Gmail, and a lot more. You'll also be able to download apps you might already have purchased in the Play Store on an Android device, if you so choose.
I couldn't find certain apps in the Play Store, though, like Netflix for example, which might be a country-related issue. Some apps would also crash at startup, like Amazon prime Video.
Xbox Game Pass worked, I could navigate the UI and launch a game with Xcloud, but after that, games would just not display anything, sticking to a black window, which I had to quit to resume using Waydroid. My banking app also failed with an error message telling me the service wasn't available.
Twitter worked perfectly, Duolingo also did, although in Portrait mode.

Area - Diforisma Urbano Area was an Italian band dedicated to progressive rock, jazz-rock, fusion, electronic music and experimental music. I intend to use this blog to talk about Key 13 music, processes, history, influences, and how the Fediverse has had such a dramatic effect. And maybe I'll write a bit more about how this Volume 003 release came together, from my perspective – but today it's not about me, it's time to thank the cast of thousands that helped get the latest Bonk Knob Records release over the line.
Forty Artists!
First and foremost, forty individual artists poured their heart and soul into creating 48 tracks for this release, which was more than the total number of tracks from all the previous releases combined!
All of them gave their work for free – so, if you can, please follow the links to their own sites available on the tracknotespages, and show them some support.
Artwork
I put out a call for someone to help with the artwork quite early on in the process, before we knew how many discs there would be. Thankfully several of the featured musicians answered the call, and then worked together to create the art you see today.
Traiken drew the main characters – the robot, chameleon, and Elizabethan Frog – first as rough line art, then gradually evolving into what you see on the final versions.
Desolation Park came up with a number of options for the lettering and typography, which the BonkBoard community voted on.
Ordos Mk.0 added several versions of the Bonk Wave Pig 'mask' which you can see in the robot's screen on Disc A, and in the background on Disc B – and has subsequently been used a lot in the launch party shows.
Track Notes
For the albumtracknotes, fastachee, n3wjack and AmbientSpace collaborated on a shared document to make these happen – if you haven't read through them, please do, while listening – they really enhance the experience!
One of the usually thankless tasks is sorting through the artist links and putting together those track notes pages – and here we have to thank Refrigerator for sorting the fediverse links out, and the always-inspiring socool for the painstakingly boring task of creating the HTML pages.
Mastering
The biggest headache of all was how to master 48 tracks.
When I first put out the submission call, I had no idea if anyone would submit at all – I had visions of a 6-10 track release, with little fanfare. When Ordos Mk.0 put out the call for the previous remixes release, we'd asked submitters to send in unmastered tracks for the first time – and socool helpfully mastered them, as there were only 9 to start with, plus another 4 added in a later batch. So it felt OK to do the same for this release – and we'd sort out the mastering between us later – or, worst case, just pay someone to do a few for us.
However, when 48 tracks turned up, we had a problem – there was no way to afford paying someone else, and it's a huge task for one person to take on. I had a go myself, but it's not my core strength. Luckily Ordos Mk.0 stepped up and did the lion's share of the work, without which there would literally not have been a release – so huge, huge thanks deserved there.
Sequencing
With 48 tracks, the next issue was how to divide them up and what order to put them in – I did the initial division into the three discs, with a tentative order. Then, as the mastering proceeded, Ordos Mk.0 tweaked the sequencing to refine it further – especially for disc C.
A number of other folks helped out with listening, advice on the sequencing etc – specifically n3wjack, Default Media Transmitter and sknob.
Launch Parties
I think we would all agree that the live streamed launch parties were a fantastic success! So much positivity and love, what an amazing experience. But a lot of work goes into making these happen.
First up: thanks to Radio Free Fedi for hosting the first live stream.
Next: to AxWax for putting together the first set of visuals and getting us up and running.
When we came to the second party, RFF was in a less-than-optimal place having just started the shutdown process, so we decided to spin up our own server – AxWax had already got a test server from before, so between us we used the same template to spin up a new one, which just about survived the onslaught! Thanks to everyone from the BonkBoard who helped out testing the robustness of the server one weekday evening before the stream!
And of course, for the second two parties, the awesome James Hastings stepped in to do the visuals – with very different scenes between Disc B and Disc C, both fitting the music and the mood perfectly. It takes a lot of time to prepare and run these, so huge thanks to both AxWax and James for this.
I nearly forgot – both Traiken and Flear made some animated videos based off the cover art to use as part of the video stream for the launch party – Flear in particular managing to animate Traiken's robot really effectively!

On July 31st, 2023, Yoni Den launched an open call for submissions for Not What I Call Bonk Wave Volume 001, a “proposed compilation of music that may or may not be Bonk Wave”.
Beginnings
Just ten days earlier, the term Bonk Wave had been born out of frustration with the Genre Police, a bunch of online folks who 'gatekeep' certain genres of electronic music to within tiny niches that seemingly only they could tell apart. “That's Not Bonk Wave!” they would say.
Within hours of that initial post, the first #BonkWave track had been imagined by Flear and posted to Mastodon.
It could have just been left there, and ended as a short-lived joke. But no...
Volume 001
Striking while the iron was still hot, the call for submissions went out on both the Fediverse and on some external music forums, with a deadline just 14 days away – August 13th, 2023.
Amazingly 14 tracks were created and submitted in that short time, and on the 25th August the collection was released on Bandcamp, with a “Pay What You Want” price tag. The music was an eclectic mix of electronic styles, as that was the circle Yoni Den moved in at the time. Was any of it Bonk Wave? Who knew – the compilation itself was confusingly titled “Not What I Call Bonk Wave” implying that the critics didn't think so.
Several of the tracks made reference to the gatekeeping aspect of the original post – including Flear's “Genre Police” and my own Key 13 track “Heretic”.
The cover art was a reference to cheap compilation albums of the past, with a few easter eggs for those who knew what to look for.
Yoni Den handled all aspects of the release – compiling the tracks, designing and drawing the artwork, writing the humorous track notes and uploading the music to Bandcamp under the guise of a fictional record label called Bonk Knob Records. (“It was right there!” said Yoni Den).
The album was an immediate success amongst the Ravenation electronic music community, and soon people were looking at that “Volume 001” part and asking “So, when's Volume 002? Can I contribute?!”
Volume 002
So, just a few weeks later, a second call for submissions went out – on October 15th, 2023. Not What I Call Bonk Wave Volume 002 : Bonkwave Nights – A compilation of Electronic Music which is or is not #BonkWaveonly this time it's night time
This time there was a longer deadline – submissions closed on the 15th of November, and Yoni Den was inundated – far more tracks than expected! A wider range of musicians had caught on, and although still mostly electronic in nature, the styles varied considerably across the two discs.
There were so many submissions (29 in total) that the album had to be split across two “discs” – A and B – and was released to Bandcamp on the 8th December, 2023. The cover art featured, for the first time, the character known as Bonk Wave Pig, with a natty purple suit and tie, and a mohican-style fuzz of pink hair, along with the now-characteristic neon teal-and-pink Bonk Wave lettering.
Again, Yoni Den handled everything – artwork, track notes, compiling and sequencing, releasing to Bandcamp, the lot.
With the momentum still high from the Volume 002 release, AxWax put out a call for collaborators on a Christmas single.
Within just a few days, on December the 22nd 2023, We Wish You A Merry Bonksmas arrived, under the new “BonkWave AllStars” banner. This release featured a host of musicians, many of whom had not contributed to either of the previous compilations, and ensured the year ended on a high point.
Passing the torch
The work to put the Volume 002 release out, and perhaps the resulting attention on Mastodon, had taken its toll, and on the 4th Jan 2024, Yoni Den, uncomfortable with the responsibility of what had now become quite a big thing, reached out to resign the unofficial post of 'CEO' for Bonk Knob Records.
The intention was that the Bonk Wave movement should continue – “We did something really great, and I hope it is just the beginning” – but it would need new hands to take it forward.
Luckily AxWax stepped up to pick up the reins in the short term, with the understanding that the 'CEO' role would likely rotate, and control shouldn't ever be concentrated in one person.
Waves of Bonk
Conscious that Mastodon wasn't proving the easiest way to coordinate releases, and also that several contributors to the first two volumes weren't even on the Fediverse, we discussed moving to a different platform.
The first step was to try a Matrix room, and so AxWax set up Waves of Bonk, on Jan 10th 2024. This started off really well, with some lively discussions, but we failed to get some of the contributors to join, especially those outside the Fediverse. Matrix is also a bit.. quirky.. and some folks struggled a bit with the client software.
It did form the spark for a few new ideas, however – discussions included the concept of a new remix album, based on tracks from the first 2 compilations. We also discussed the image2midi software that Yonder created, and I subsequently turned into a webapp for easier use. At one point there was even talk of a compilation of these – but that didn't happen.

Deeper discussion was held around the future of any Bonk Wave infrastructure or community – should we set up an alternative to Bandcamp? – several of us had recently set up Faircamp sites so that looked like a good idea. If we did set something up, it should be robust, without reliance on one person. We also discussed the fact we were seen as an electronic music community, which perhaps wasn't exactly the case, and might be excluding some folks.
What evolved eventually was the idea of an old school forum for discussion purposes, and a Faircamp site under the same banner for current and future releases. Across late January 2024 I set up the bonkwave.org domain, and AxWax configured a Simple Machines Forum to run on it, which I installed into some web hosting space I already had, and wasn't using for much. This was the start of The BonkBoard, which launched for real on the 3rd of February, 2024.
Licensing
When it came to the Faircamp site we hit a bit of an issue – it wasn't clear what licences the original compilations had been released under – artists had given their tracks freely under the assumption it would be on Bandcamp. Could we just copy everything to our own Faircamp?
We decided to reach out and get explicit permission from all the artists, which still remains an issue to this day. We got rapid responses with full permission from (nearly) all the Fediverse artists but many of the non-Fedi artists just didn't reply to the emails, which is such a shame. We've left their tracks off the Faircamp site for now – you can still get them for free on Bandcamp. If any of you ever read this – please let us know if you're OK duplicating your tracks!
I still don't know if we made the right decision or not – but it feels better not to re-use material without clear permission. For each subsequent release we've established clear licensing per track, and the submission statement from Volume 003 onwards allows “Bonk Knob Records” a limited, non-exclusive distribution right so we can, in future, move to new hosting services as required.
Be My BonkWave
Somewhere in the middle of all this activity, AxWax found the time to coordinate a second collaborative release as BonkWave AllStars – and Be My BonkWave became the first new release on the shiny new Faircamp site, just in time for Valentine's Day 2024.
Meanwhile, the BonkBoard forum was getting a few new joiners, but we hadn't (and have still not) attracted anyone outside the Fediverse. Discussion was slow.
Remixes
Somewhere on the Matrix chat we'd started discussing a remix album. It turns out that, back in February, Ordos Mk.0 and Socool had already remixed each other's tracks from the Volume 002 compilation, and were ready to go.
On March 8th, 2024, Ordos Mk.0 put out a call for submissions for the remix compilation on the BonkBoard. The tentative release date was set for April 26th, to give everyone time to finish.
We didn't know it at the time, but the creative process for this release would start to point the way forward to the future. Over the next few weeks, several people contributed. The cover art was started by DockBunson and finished by Ordos Mk.0. The decision was taken to master all the tracks together, and Socool stepped up to the plate to do that. Track notes and sequencing was done as a joint exercise on a Google spreadsheet set up by n3wjack. We decided to remix the original compilation title as well, and came up with Not Bonk What I Call Wave: Remixes – with the cover art cleverly arranged so you could still read it as “Not What I Call Bonk Wave”.
A few artists were struggling to find time to finish their remixes so by the 10th May 2024 we decided to release what we had, 9 awesome tracks. The other remixes did come through a few weeks later, and we re-launched the album on the 21st of June, with the new material taking it up to 13 tracks. Mastering the tracks together made this the most polished release to date.
For the first time, AxWax suggested a live launch party using Radio Free Fedi's owncast server. which was hugely successful – everyone had a great time, and it really brought the community together.
Progress? or not?
Unlike the previous compilations, which had been Yoni Den alone, suddenly we had a team of people working together on their own initiative, spreading the workload. To me, at least, this really felt like a big step forwards. But I was conscious we'd had a submission period open for three months, and only had 13 tracks, which wasn't a lot compared to the previous compilation with a far shorter submission deadline.

An anniversary
As July 2024 came round, I was aware we'd be heading for the first year anniversary of Yoni Den's original Bonk Wave post. It felt like we should do something to commemorate this – so I set up a call for a secret collaboration on Mastodon, on July 3rd, using the BonkWave AllStars banner again. I checked, and double checked, the date on Yoni Den's post – 22nd July 2023, and set aim to release on that day.
I got more contributions than I could handle and the resulting patchwork of production ended up as Happy Bonk Day, featuring a fabulous lineup of musicians. This was very different from anything we'd done before, as it skewed more towards rock than electronica. The release was completed by alternative versions from sknob and AxWax
We had everything ready to go for the 22nd, then, on the 21st, 55aw suddenly announced the anniversary! I was stunned. The original post had been past midnight in my local timezone (UK), so was technically showing as the 22nd to me, but in US timezones was on the 21st.
So I hurriedly rushed out the release on the 21st, amending the cover art appropriately.
Unbonked?
While putting together Happy Bonk Day, we'd already been discussing what to do about another compilation. AxWax wanted to attract more musicians outside the electronic genre, so we came up with the idea of a 2-disc compilation Bonked and Unbonked where, we assumed, acoustic musicians would feel more comfortable on the Unbonked disc.
The release of the single was a good time to put out the submission call, so on July 23rd 2024 I put a post up on the BonkBoard, and a link on Mastodon.
Remembering that we'd allowed nearly 3 months for the Remixes album, and only had 13 submissions, I wasn't expecting much. We set the submission deadline for 2 months time – 25th September – just to make sure we had enough submissions for at least one disc.
I may have been a tad pessimistic. The eventual Volume 003 release had 48 tracks, spanning 3 discs! You can read all about how it was put together here. We split the release across 4 weeks, with Disc A on 25th October, Disc B on the 8th of November, and Disc C on the 22nd of November 2024.
Suddenly the future seems pretty Bonky!
Bonk Wave was, is, and will always be
Getting a bit more philosophical as 2024 comes to an end.
The Volume 003 release has shown that we've come together as an awesome, supportive, creative community of artists. It was still a lot of hard work to get Volume 003 over the line, but the lessons learned will make the next one easier – and there will be a next one. There's already discussion about a second remix album happening now – it's currently visible to contributors only – but give us a shout on the BonkBoard if you want to take part. The call for Volume 004 won't be too far into 2025.
As we grow, we're going to need to get a little more formal about some things – perhaps developing a written Code of Conduct for the forum that everyone can agree on, solidifying/clarifying/standardising the submission guidelines and expanding the moderation team. Hopefully we can do this without changing the way everything works now – robust conversations and strong opinions are the nature of the beast, but we can still keep it civil.
I also want to be clear, we still don't know what is, or is not, Bonk Wave. And there's a few things that are implied by that.
If we don't know what Bonk Wave is, we can't own it, or copyright it.
We do own, collectively, this pseudo-record-label called Bonk Knob Records, and we have a great community around the bonkwave.org website, but none of this implies ownership of Bonk Wave.
We should never forget where this comes from. How can any of us say, with a straight face, “That's Not Bonk Wave!” to someone else, when there's no clear definition of what it is?
There have been, and will be, people who use the term outside of our core group. Maybe even to make money out of it. We can't stop them. Should we even try? It doesn't feel right, unless they're actively trying to disrupt what we're doing.
There's probably little point in getting angry at people trying to rip off the idea, as there's very little we can do about it. If we keep doing what we do, and do it well, they will all fade away. Or join us!
And we will still reap the same benefits we do now – which is, no money, but a great sense of belonging!

Like, if you want to know about Vaporwave, I would paste for you a Macintosh Plus playlist I know of on youtube, because while it may or may not represent the entirety of the genre, it definitely represents the most important aspects of it.

I suggest seeking more answers by listening to the "Not What I Call Bonk Wave" compilations which you can find here: bonkwave.org/music - these are as definitive as it gets.
I did try to read it, but it seemed to be mostly concerned with the process of assembling a compilation, rather than explaining anything about the (proposed?) genre classification, or its features.
That said, I can say, from a quick scan of the vol 1 comp that Bonkwave is a sample-based subgenre of techno music. You could tell people that.
My TEAC 32-2B is home and operational again. Turns out it’s a rare one, actually being a Tascam X-10 disguised as a TEAC 32-2. I'll admit I never fully bought into it -- color schemes are fun! -- but I did try shutting it off for good while. I can't help thinking about how one arrives at such views, and what I might learn from them.
The principle I took from it (intended or not): highlighting desensitizes your eye and encourages skimming over code, jumping from symbol to symbol, rather than really seeing and studying it more deeply and carefully. If code is too noisy in plain monochromatic text, it can probably be made simpler, more concise.
