I did a tryout session at a pop choir tonight! Mixed feelings; singing was nice, teacher was very good, welcoming atmosphere.

Another thing that I had already noticed in the previous singing class.. and I guess it's in the nature of these things, but they separate the group into men and women, I get placed among the men, and so then when the teacher addresses your subgroups you get auto-misgendered constantly lol (I'm fine with "him" pronouns, but it's being called a man that I don't vibe with somehow.. or "sir" ("meneer") even worse lol)
I understand, it's the voice.. it's how it works in choirs, pragmatically. But it puts me off! 👩🏼🦱
Also socially it's weird.. the women largely basically ignore the men and the other way around, and the guys were all chummy with me as a potential new member, and I know they mean well, but I don't feel comfortable around them so much as I feel around women, and arghh!

Worked for almost 20 years in critical infrastructure (electric generation). We often had employees that had to go to China for work and business.
IT issued them burner phones and burner laptops. They were not allowed to use their normal business owned devices and were encouraged not to bring their personal devices when away on business.
I see the US today as no different than China.

No 2 ways about it, this is a big device. It has a 17 inch screen, 16:10. It weighs 2.8 kilos, and it's 38 cm wide, 27 cm deep, and 2.7 cm thick.
The chassis is made of aluminium and has literally no flex, no bend, no creaking. It also resists fingerprints really well, thanks to a soft touch coating on the inside of the laptop.
You're free to open it, and you can access and replace the 2 M.2 SSD slots, the RAM, the wireless card, and the battery as well, which is screwed in and not glued.
The CPU is the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX. All models come with at least 16 gigs of RAM, and an RTX 3070Ti with 8Gigs of vRAM. You also get 250 gigs of PCIe3 SSD, and Wifi 6 + BLuetooth 5.2.
It can go up to 64 Gigs of 4800 Mhz RAM, up to 4TB of PCIe 4 storage, and, either an RTX 3080, or a 3080Ti. And all cards run at their maximum Total Graphics Power allowed by Nvidia,. You also get a 99Wh battery.
On geekbench 6, it gave me scores of 2121 in single core, and 10219 in multi core.
I ran the Shadow of the Tomb Raider benchmark, at high settings, at the native resolution of 2560x1600, and it got me an average of 101 FPS. When cranking all the settings to the max, still at the native resolution, it managed to reach 97 FPS. At 1080p highest details, the Stellaris 17 got 110FPS.
It also gave me an idea about thermals, at 75 °C under heavy load, which isn't bad at all.
With its 99Wh battery, running in Nvidia on demand mode, with the display at 50% brightness, wifi being used to play youtube videos in a loop in Firefox, the laptop lasted for 8 hours and 12 minutes.
The keyboard uses Cherry MX ultra low profile switches. The key travel is really good, at 1.8 mm, and the click happens at 0.8 mm. Some of the keys aren't using mechanical switches, notably the function keys and the whole numpad, they're using membrane switches instead.
The touchpad is humongous. It's also thankfully centered, and it's covered in glass, so it's really smooth. It feels very precise, and using it with tap to click feels great.
It's a diveboard mechanism, so obviously you can't click everywhere on it, it has to be in the bottom half of the touchpad, and the sound it makes is satisfying and doesn't rattle.
The dislay 16:10, 17 inches, and it goes up to 240hz refresh rate. It is G Sync compatible, to avoid any screen tearing issues. It's decently bright, at 380 nits, and it has full sRGB coverage.
In terms of ports, on the left, you get the usual Kensington Lock, a USB-A 3.2 Gen2x1 port, a microphone input, and a headphone jack. On the right, you get an SD card reader, and 2 USB-A 3.2 Gen1 ports. And on the back, you have a port for the Aquaris external watercooling solution, a USB-C 3.2 Gen2x1 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a Gigabit ethernet port, and a barrel jack.
Let's finish with the mic, speakers and webcam. The microphone is decent, but nothing to write home about. You'll want to run it at about 25% volume. The speakers get really loud, but they don't distort or sound tinny at all, they have a good amount of bass.
As per the webcam, well it's 1080p, and it can produce good results with decent lighting, but it's still a bit grainy even in natural light. It's just a small notch above the usual potato cam.

Demokrasi dinamiklerinin senkronizasyonu sorunu

Üniversite öğrencileri Saraçhane direnişinde…
Son üç ay içerisinde Türkiye’de belki de mevcut rejimin kaderini değiştirecek iki önemli gelişme yaşandı. Ve demokrasi mücadelesi tarihimizde çoğu kez rastladığımız gibi bu vektörler yan yana değil birbiriyle kesişerek ilerleme eğilimi gösterdi.
Bunlardan biri, MHP lideri Devlet Bahçeli’nin çağrısıyla yeniden gündemleşen Kürt sorununun barışçıl çözüm süreci; diğeri ise, CHP’nin kazanma ihtimali en yüksek görülen müstakbel Cumhurbaşkanı adayı ve İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediye Başkanı Ekrem İmamoğlu’nun bir sürü yolsuzluk ve teröre destek gibi suçlamalarla tutuklanmasıydı.
Birbirine taban tabana zıt olan bu iki hamle Erdoğan ekibinin gerçekte ne yapmak istediğini sorduruyor. Bir yandan sürekli şeytanlaştırılan HDP/DEM parti geleneği ve “değişmez düşman” olan Kürt ulusal demokratik hareketiyle belli belirsiz de olsa bir barış kapısı aralarken; Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin kurucu ana muhalefet partisine, onun cumhurbaşkanı adayına ve ülkenin en büyük metropolüne girişilen bu darbe bir arada nasıl yorumlanabilir?
Akla gelen ilk şey, bu saldırı karşısında Kürt özgürlük hareketini ve bağlaşığı olan demokrasi güçlerinin atıl kalmasını sağlamak gibi bir planın düşünülmüş olabileceğidir. Kürt ulusal muhalefeti bir çözüm fırsatı ortaya çıkmışken bunu heba etmek istemeyecek, iktidara karşı bir tepki vermekten kaçınacak, böylece hem mevcut, hem de olası ittifaklar kırılmış olacaktı.
Benim görüşüm, Erdoğan rejiminin ne pahasına olursa olsun siyasi iktidarını korumaya odaklı olmakla birlikte; bu aşamada yaptığı hamlelerin koordineden uzak, stratejik bir akıldan yoksun olarak can havliyle yapıldığı; belki de çeşitli ekipler tarafından kotarılan bu koordinasyonsuz hamlelerin birbirini anlamsız hale getirdiğidir.
İktidar erkinde açıkça çok başlılık ve telaş gözleniyor: bu telaş öyle veya böyle iktidarlarının sonuna geldiği ve eğer iktidar değişirse şimdiye kadarki devasa kazanımların nasıl korunacağı gibi yakıcı sorunlardan kaynaklanıyor.
İktidarın iki hamlesinin koordinesiz olabileceğine dair düşüncemi destekleyen şey, Öcalan’a yapılan çağrının Devlet Bahçeli’den gelmesidir. Bu hamle asıl olarak Ortadoğu’da yeni ve Türkiye açısından tehlikeli statükolar oluşurken Kürt dinamiğini yanına alarak bir duruş göstermeyi temel alıyor. Türkiye Cumhuriyeti devleti açısından uluslararası boyutu olan stratejik bir varlık sorunu olarak gözüküyor. Böyle bir süreçte yıllarca baş düşman bellenmiş PKK hareketiyle bir uzlaşma ararken; devletin kurucu partisi ve her koşulda sadık Türk milliyetçisi CHP kitlesini küstürüp dışlamak, düşmanlaştırmak herhalde bu akılla ters bir durum olurdu.
İmamoğlu operasyonu ise belli ki Bahçeli tasarımının amaç ve hedeflerinden tamamen uzakta, sadece Erdoğan’ın sonraki başkanlık seçimlerindeki en güçlü adayını tasfiye etmeye, CHP’ye karşı sindirme ve güç gösterisine yönelik kısa ve orta vadeyle düşünülmüş bir hamle. Eğer illa bir koordineden bahsedeceksek, bunun “çözüm süreci”ni özellikle baltalamak için kotarılmış bir kışkırtma olduğunu söylemek daha anlamlı olur. Belki de bir tarafın kurmayları Behçeli projesini sadece muhalefet güçlerinin ittifaklarını parçalamak için bir fırsat olarak gördüler. Göremedikleri şey ise bunun CHP kitlesini ayaklandıran bir toplumsal dinamizme yol açmasıydı.
Bir başka ihtimal de her iki hamlenin de muhalefeti, sonraki dönem için belli pazarlıklara zorlamak amacıyla imal edilen araçlar olması; Birisi havuç, diğeri sopa olarak!..
Demokrasi güçlerinin önceliği; haklar mı çıkarlar mı?
Türkiye’de çok kolay bulunmasa da eksiği gediği çok fazla da olsa yine de en umutsuz zamanlarda ortaya çıkan bir demokrasi dinamizminin var olduğu, 19 Mart operasyonları sonrasında İstanbul Saraçhane’de başlayıp haftalarca süren, ülkenin pek çok yerine yayılan kitlesel protesto gösterilerinde bir kez daha görüldü. Bunu 2013’de patlak veren “Gezi protestoları” dönemindeki coşkuyla kıyaslayabiliriz. Bu kez de üniversite gençliğinin öncülüğü ile başladı ve ama sadece bununla kalmayıp yerinden çok zor kalkan CHP kitlesinin de harekete geçmesini sağladı. CHP yönetiminin geleneksel olarak kitle hareketlerinden kaçınma ve onları barajlama yerine bu kez onları dikkate almak zorunda kalması, bu sürecin ayırt edici özelliklerinden biri oldu.
Değerli felsefecilerimizden İoanna Kuçuradi, “hak” ile “çıkar” arasında fark olduğuna dikkat çeker: “Çıkar, hakkımızdan biraz fazlasıdır; bu da başkasının hakkını ihlal edebilen bir şeydir.” Dolayısıyla “hak çatışması” olmaz ama “çıkar çatışması” çok görülür… Buradan hareketle can alıcı sorumuz şudur: Demokrasi talep eden gruplar gerçekten haklarını mı savunuyorlar, yoksa çıkarlarını mı? Sadece kendi “hak”larını mı savunuyorlar yoksa diğerlerinin haklarına da saygılılar mı?
Hak, özgürlük, demokrasi talebiyle eyleme geçen kitleler homojen değildir. Aralarında çıkar ve talepleri birbirinden farklı sınıflar, tabakalar, çıkar grupları, hatta birbirleriyle çatışmalı mağdur gruplar da bulunabilir. Demokrasi güçleri sadece egemen otorite ile mücadele etmekle kalmaz, kendine dinamizm veren grupların aralarındaki iyi veya kötü ilişkilerle de biçimlenir. Bundandır ki merkezi otorite muhalif katmanlar arasındaki çelişkileri kışkırtmaktan; birbirine karşı kullanmaktan geri durmaz.
Demokrasi talep eden gruplar da diğerlerinin gücünden yararlanırken, kendi önceliklerini dayatmaya; daha güçsüz grupları kendilerine tabi kılmaya eğilimli olabilirler. Bir fizik kuralı olarak daha büyük kütle dinamizminin daha küçükleri kendine çekmesi, sosyal mücadeleler için de geçerlidir.
Saraçhane gösterileri sürecinde olan da buydu; CHP kitlesi kendilerine yapılan bu haksızlığa karşı korku duvarını aşıp sokağa çıkınca, daha önce hep alanda olan ve hak arayan gruplarla aralarına bir sınır çekme ihtiyacı da hasıl oldu. Çünkü onlar kendilerine haksızlık yapılmasına alışmamışlardı; kendileri diğerleri gibi değildi, memleketin gerçek efendisi idiler; her zaman itilip kakılmış olanlarla bir arada olmamalıydılar! Böylesi bir duyguyla koşullanan en azından bir bölüm Saraçhane kitlesi, Kürt ulusal hareketi başta olmak üzere rejimin hedefindeki diğer bütün mağdur grupları dışlamakta beis görmediler. İşin ilginç yanı, bunu yaptıktan sonra da “onlar niye bizi desteklemiyor, o halde iktidar yanlısılar!” diye bu durumdan ikinci bir çıkar sağlamayı da ihmal etmemeleri…
DEM parti ve bileşenleri, bir yandan ortada henüz somut bir şey olmasa da bir çözüm süreci ihtimalinin ortaya çıkmış olma şansını heba etmemek; bir yandan da sürekli mücadelesini verdikleri ve hep mağduru oldukları bir konuda ana muhalefet akımıyla da ilkesel bir dayanışma göstermek ikilemindeydi. Bıçak sırtı bir çizgide, üstelik onlarca kez kazandıkları belediye başkanları tutuklanıp kayyum atanırken kendileriyle hiçbir dayanışma yapılmamış olmasına rağmen soğukkanlı bir duruş göstermeye çalıştılar diyebilirim.
Saraçhane gösterileri Türkiye’deki demokrasi güçlerinin ortak örgütlenme, ortak program altında, güç birliği yapamadıkları gibi güçlerini ve eylemlerini senkronize edemedikleri bir pratik daha oldu. Büyük enerjilerin, aynı anda, aynı hedefe yöneltilememesinden ötürü hep otoriter rejimlerin kazançlı çıktığı açık. Hâlbuki bilinçli, sağduyulu önderlikler despot rejimleri değişime zorlayabileceği, dengesini bozabileceği anları görerek o ‘an’larda eylem odaklarını buraya yönlendirebilir. Rejimin kırılmaya uğramasıyla daha dezavantajlı grupların kendilerine bir demokrasi ve siyasi manevra açılabileceğini görmeleri önemlidir.
‘Türkiye’nin demokrasisinden bize ne?’
Türkiye’nin metropollerinde, sahil kentlerinde yoğunlaşan; modernist, seküler kesimlerin sıkı sıkıya sarıldıkları Türklük şovenizmi ve Kemalist elitizmin, kendilerinden daha ilerici, devrimci, demokratik taleplerin savunucusu olan Kürt ulusal hareketi ve sosyalistleri dışladıkça (bu konuda demokrat ve özgürlükçü bir yapıya sahip olmadıkça) otokrat siyasal İslamcı iktidara karşı başarı şansları olamayacağını anlamaları zor görünüyor. Demokrasi mücadelesinin temel sorunlarından biri budur.
“Temel hak ve özgürlükler istiyoruz ama Kürtler hariç!” diyerek bir çıkış yolu bulunamayacağı açık. Bu dışlayıcı kibir, bu tarafta da yankısını buluyor; Türkiye’de gerçek bir demokrasi mücadelesi verilemeyeceği ve gerçek bir partner bulunamayacağı inancını kökleştiriyor, güvensizliği derinleştiriyor.
Bu saflarda tepki gösterilmekte haklı ama strateji ve taktik ilke haline getirmekte ise yanlış bir yönelim var. Son yıllarda Türkiye’de demokrasi mücadelesine “bizi ne ilgilendirir?” diyerek karşı çıkan ve bunu çok daha radikal siyasi istemlere sahip olmak adına savunan kadrolar artıyor. Bunlara göre, Kürdistan ulusal kurtuluş mücadelesinin Türkiye’deki demokrasi mücadelesiyle hiçbir ilgisi olamaz; “onların demokrasisinden bize ne!” deniyor. Basitçe bu “izolasyoncu” olmayı “bağımsızlıkçılık” sanan milliyetçi bir anlayıştan kaynaklanır… Eğer Türkiye’nin demokrasi ya da diktatörlük olup olmaması bizi ilgilendirmiyorsa, mantık olarak onun işgalci, sömürgeci olması da bizi ilgilendirmez demektir. Sömürgeci, işgalci, diktatör, vs. bir nitelik bizi ilgilendirmiyorsa neden bu niteliği taşıyanla mücadele ediyoruz ki!?
Kürdistan ulusal kurtuluş mücadelesi önüne ister bağımsızlığı, ister özerkliği isterse sadece dil ve kültürel hakların tanınması hedeflerini koysun, giriştiği her mücadele ister istemez onu genel anlamda demokrasi mücadelesinin aktif bir parçası haline getirir. Bunu anlamayan kişi ve hareketler kendi iddialarına yabancılaşmış demektir.
Kürdistan diyelim ki bağımsız olduğunda ülkesinin sınırlarını kapatıp, toprağını alarak gökyüzüne yükselecek değildir. Yine bu coğrafyada, bir zamanlar kendileriyle ölümüne savaştığı devletlerle, toplumlarla yan yana -en azından komşu- olarak yaşayacaktır. Ticaret yollarını, havayı hatta suları bile kullanmak için komşularıyla iyi geçinmek, onlarla anlaşmak, ortak bir çözüm bulmak zorunda olacaktır. Bu ülkelerde demokratik, insan haklarına, özgürlüklerine sahip yönetimler olmasını mı yoksa despot, savaşa ve saldırıya hazır düşman yönetimler olmasını mı isteriz?
Üçüncüsü, Kürdistan’ın dışında da Türkiye’nin çeşitli kentlerinde, metropollerinde milyonlarca Kürt yaşıyor. Artık sadece burada yaşıyorlar, çocuklarının geleceğini burada kuruyorlar. Bu insanlar demokratik bir ülkede yaşamayı hak etmiyorlar mı? İstanbul’da, İzmir’de, Antalya’da yaşayıp “burada olup biten hiçbir şey bizi ilgilendirmiyor!” demek kadar saçma-sapan bir şey olabilir mi?
Demokrasi, hak ve özgürlükler mücadelesinin çeşitli handikaplarla boğuşmak zorunda kaldığı bir gerçek. Şu var ki küsmek, darılmak, yorulmakla bu sorunlar çözülmüyor. Akılla, bilinçle, vicdanla, düşünce, kültür ve sanatın gücüyle birbirini etkilemeye dönüştürmeye çalışmak zor ve zahmetli olabilir ama her har halde son fert kalıncaya kadar birbirini öldürmeye çalışmaktan ve sonraki kuşaklara nefret ve savaş mirası bırakmaktan daha zor değil…
Çözümsüzlüğün stabilize edilmesi…
Bahçeli ve Öcalan tarafından yapılan çağrılarla kapısı aralanan “yeni çözüm süreci” beklentileri, 19 Mart operasyonu ve kitle protestolarının gölgesinde kalmış gibi görünse de; süreci yönlendiren aktörlerin belli bir kararlılık gösterdikleri de bir gerçek. Yine de belli olan şey, hemen her şeyin belirsiz olduğudur. Önceki sürecin yeterince açık, katılımcı olmadığından şikâyet ederken, bu kez arka planda neler olup bittiğini hiç bilmiyoruz. Bazı kulaklara üflenen fısıltılar ve bol bol üretilen spekülasyonlardan başka…
İşin aslına bakılırsa, her şeye sıfırdan başlamak yerine epeyce yol kat edilmiş önceki sürecin kesildiği yerden, örneğin “Dolmabahçe Mutabakatı” üzerinden devam edilmesi daha akılcı olurdu.
Bu kez de 19 Mart’ta demokrasiye dair var olabilecek beklentileri de darbeleyen saldırılara bakılırsa, iktidarın gerçekten “iyi” bir niyeti görünmüyor. Ortalıkta, temastı, görüştü, pazarlıktı söylentileri pompalanırken, karşılıklı herhangi bir adım atılmadan, güneyde konumlanmış gerilla güçlerine yönelik operasyonlar sürerken hem de, işi sadece “PKK’nin silah bırakması ve örgütü tasfiye” söylemi üzerine kurduğunda bunun bir “teslimiyet” dayatması ve beklentisi olacağı açıktır.
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, kendi önceli olan birkaç büyük imparatorluğun siyasi hafıza ve geleneklerini taşıyan bir devlettir. Mevcut siyasi kadroların bunu ne kadar sürdürme kabiliyetinde oldukları ayrı bir konu. Bu askeri doktrine göre, devlet halledeceği bir meseleyi -bu işgal edeceği bir bölge, çörekleneceği bir ekonomik/siyasi varlık da olabilir- metal şekillendirme yöntemindeki gibi önce yeteri derecede ısıtır; ısıtılan bu meseleye kendi istediği biçimi verdikten sonra da hemen soğutmaya alır. Böylece istediği sonuç kalıcı hale gelmiş olur. Çünkü o meseleyi aynı yüksek sıcaklık koşullarında ısıtmak ve şekillendirmek diğerleri için mümkün olmayabilir. Örneğin Türkiye sık sık Yunanistan’la arasında Ege denizindeki egemenlik için sık sık bu yola baş vuruyor.
Fakat Kürdistan konusunda çok uzun yıllardır devletin bu meseleyi ısıtıp soğutma ve istediği biçimi verme inisyatifi kalmadı. Devlet geleneğinin ikinci taktiği de böyle durumlarda “çözümsüzlüğe” oynamaktır. Buna da örnek, Kıbrıs’ın kuzeyindeki 50 yıldır süren ilhaka rağmen diplomatik ve uluslararası anlamda kabul edilebilir bir çözümünün olmamasıdır.
Türkiye, Kürt halkının Ortadoğu’da uluslararası tanınmış, garanti edilmiş bir statüko edinmesini istememektedir. Bunun için içerde ve dışarda, hatta dünyanın herhangi bir yerindeki Kürt kazanımlarını kendi meselesi olarak görüp, onu bozmaya, engellemeye çalışmaktadır. İçerde ve dışarda bir türlü bastırılamayan Kürt dinamizmine karşı da “çözümsüzlüğe” oynanmaktadır.
Son dönemde Bahçeli eliyle yürütülen sürecin özelliğini, “çözümsüzlüğü stabil/kalıcı” hale getirmek olarak okuyabiliriz.
Halk barış ihtimaline bile tutunmak istiyor
Doğada olduğu gibi, toplum bilim de hiçbir şeyin yoktan var, varken de yok olmayacağını gösterir. Kürt/Kürdistan sorununu ortaya çıkaran ne Öcalan’dır ne de PKK’dir. Tersine tarihsel olarak böyle siyasal-toplumsal sorun olduğu için, bu sorunun çözümüne cevap olabileceği düşünülen örgütler ortaya çıkar ve taban bulur. Dolayısıyla bu sorun temelde devam ettikçe liderler ve örgütler değişse de sorunun eşit, adil ve kalıcı çözümleri için arayışlar, örgütlenmeler, hareketler devam eder.
Halkımız savaşlarla, yıkımlarla, buna rağmen süren çözümsüzlük ortamından çok yoruldu, yıprandı. Somut barış-mutabakat olmasa bile bunun ihtimaline bile tutunmak istiyor. Barışçıl çözümlerin önünü açılmasını bekliyor.
Kürdistan sorunu eskiden de şimdi de uluslararası boyutu olan bir sorundur. Bu hem bir imkân hem de bir zorluktur. Hangi biçimde olursa olsun, aynı coğrafyayı paylaştığı toplumlarla, devletlerle ortak bir çözüm bulmak zorunlu olacaktır. Önemli olan bu ortak çözümün adil, özgürlükçü ve tam hak eşitliğine dayanmasıdır.
Eğer adil bir çözüm olmazsa, taraflardan biri güçsüz olduğu için buna boyun eğmek zorunda kalsa bile bu ilanihaye sürmez ve belki daha boyutlu şekilde yeniden patlar. O halde çözümün adil olduğu kadar kalıcı ve sürdürülebilir olması da gereklidir.
Sorunu sadece Türklerle-Kürtler arasındaki bir konu olarak takdim etmek, Sünni-İslam eksenine dayanmak da son derece yanlıştır. Sorun emperyal despotik bir devleti, Türk ulus devletine dönüştürürken kırıp döktüğü, yakıp yıktığı, ezdiği tüm halkları (Rum, Ermeni, Asuri-Süryani); tüm dinler, tüm etnik kimlikleri (Hıristiyan, Alevi, Ezidi, Yahudi toplumları) da ilgilendirir.
Bütün bunların Türkiye’nin hem siyasi, hem toplumsal yapısında çok radikal değişimlere ihtiyaç duyacağı açıktır.

I am doing the data recovery on this now.
Laptop had Bitlocker enabled. I had to talk the laptop owner through how to access the Bitlocker key in his Microsoft account.
Thankfully the recovery key worked to unlock it. Turning Bitlocker off now.
The screen was damaged on this XPS laptop. I just have the internal screen cable unplugged and am using a Dell Thunderbolt dock to view with an external screen.
This Dell XPS only has USB-C form factor Thunderbolt ports, no regular USB ports or even an HDMI.

Today I will be attempting a data recovery from a Dell XPS laptop that was dropped and no longer has proper display output to the laptop screen.To anyone thinking about getting an Dell XPS, I recommend that you don't. The extra cost premium is not worth what you actually get as I think Dell makes a lot of poor design decisions with the XPS line that look "premium" but are really problematic.
That's my opinion on the XPS series. The Latitude line is much more reliable, if you want to go with a laptop from Dell.

I am okay with disk encryption if the owner of the device enables it themselves and understands at least a little bit about it.
Microsoft enabling it on people's computers without their knowledge is really scummy.
I have full disk encryption on my ThinkPad laptop with Linux and I'm okay with that... because I set it up and I know about it.
And yes, laptops with only USB-C are no fun. And also that so many different technologies use the same port. Sometimes the port has DisplayPort, sometimes Thunderbolt, sometimes not.
Exactly. Most regular people are more concerned about loosing access to their own data than they would be about other people seeing their data.

My husband's theory is that they all just think of wait staff and the lot as "the help", and they don't really have the ability to picture "the help" as real human beings with motivations and desires of their own.

Refresher on the rules for discussing Israeli wars:Rule 1: Israel is never the aggressor. If Israel attacks someone it's either a response to an aggression that happened in the past, or a preemptive attack to thwart an imminent aggression in the future.
Rule 2: History automatically restarts at the date of the last act of aggression against Israel. If someone attacks Israel it was completely unprovoked, because nothing happened before the attack on Israel.
Rule 3: Anything bad that Israel does is justified by Rule 2. This is true even if it does things that would be considered completely unjustifiable if it were done by a nation like Russia or China.
Rule 4: Israel has a right to defend itself, but nobody else does.
Rule 5: Israel never bombs civilians, it bombs Bad Guys. If shocking numbers of civilians die it's because they were actually Bad Guys, or because Bad Guys killed them, or because a Bad Guy stood too close to them. If none of those reasons apply then it's for some other mysterious reason we are still waiting for the IDF to investigate.
Rule 6: Criticizing anything Israel does means you hate Jewish people. There is no other possible reason for anyone to oppose acts of mass military slaughter besides a seething, obsessive hatred for a small Abrahamic faith.
Rule 7: Nothing Israel does is ever as bad as the hateful criticisms described in Rule 6. Criticisms of Israel's actions are always worse than Israel's actions themselves, because those critics hate Jews and wish to commit another Holocaust. Preventing this must consume 100 percent of our political energy and attention.
Rule 8: Israelis are only ever the victims and never the victimizers. If Israelis kill Iranians, it's because the Iranians hate Jews. If Iranians kill Israelis, it's because the Iranians hate Jews. Israel is an innocent little lamb that just wants to mind its own business in peace.
Rule 9: The fact that Israel is literally always in a state of war with its neighbors and with displaced indigenous populations must be interpreted as proof that Rule 8 is true instead of proof that Rule 8 is ridiculous nonsense.
Rule 10: Muslim lives are much, much less important to us than western lives or Israeli lives. Nobody is allowed to think too hard about why this might be.
Rule 11: The media always tell the truth about Israel and its various conflicts. If you doubt this then you are likely in violation of Rule 6.
Rule 12: Unsubstantiated claims which portray Israel's enemies in a negative light may be reported as factual news stories without any fact checking or qualifications, while extensively evidenced records of Israeli criminality must be reported on with extreme skepticism and doubtful qualifiers like "Hezbollah says" or "according to the Hamas-run health ministry". This is important to do because otherwise you might get accused of being a propagandist.
Rule 13: Israel must continue to exist in its current iteration no matter what it costs or how many people need to die. There is no need to present any logically or morally grounded reasons why this is the case. If you dispute this then you are likely in violation of Rule 6.
Rule 14: The US government has never lied about anything ever, and is always on the right side of every conflict.
Rule 15: Israel is the last bastion of freedom and democracy in the middle east and therefore must be defended, no matter how many journalists it has to assassinate, no matter how many press institutions it needs to shut down, no matter how many protests its supporters need to dismantle, no matter how much free speech it needs to eliminate, no matter how many civil rights its western backers need to erase, and no matter how many elections its lobbyists need to buy.
