In @pluralistic 's The Lost Cause there was some software that kids used to show fellow residents a vision of a better future by modelling their streets and their houses. Basically what construction companies do to sell houses, or what road building companies do to sell asphalt. But easier and faster to use.

The question is, do we have anything like that? I'm at a point where I need to show a future of my town to residents, and I want to show them pictures and renderings, not just maps.

Gets some details wrong. Guns you purchase/upgrade persist. Only the guns you find underwater degrade.

> Note that weapons are ephemeral: you can only use them for the next dive,

Should say current dive, for weapons you find underwater.

> and after that they are considered degraded and gone. So you constantly need to purchase those if you want to rely on actual guns.

You purchase it once and you can use it every dive after that if you want.

Anti-Fascist Days of Action

Maja is on hunger strike!
Anti-fascist days of action
20-22 June 2025

Following an illegal extradition from Germany to Hungary and almost a year of cruel solitary confinement in Budapest, Maja, an anti-fascist from Jena, went on hunger strike on 5 June 2025. Maja is demanding to be transferred back to Germany.

The situation is acute. We must act now.

Every day of fasting increases the risk of damage to health. However, the German government and the German Foreign Office have not yet exerted any noticeable influence on the Hungarian government. It is therefore up to us to increase the pressure on them.

That is why we are calling for international days of action in solidarity with Maja on the weekend of 20 to 22 June. All over Germany and in other countries, rallies and actions should take place in front of German and Hungarian institutions and embassies and the seats of the responsible parties.

The action days take place 15 days after the start of the hunger strike. After two weeks of fasting, Maja will then already be in a critical phase. On 20 June 2025, the court in Budapest will also decide on their application to be transferred to house arrest.

Get active!

  • Form action committees in your cities now and prepare actions.
  • Activate your international contacts! We must build international pressure.
  • Go to the embassies and consulates of Hungary and Germany.
  • Organise demonstrations and creative actions in public spaces.
  • Send us your calls to solikomitee-maja@systemli.org by 17 June 2025 so that we can publish all actions together.
  • After your actions, publish reports, pictures and videos on Instagram in collaboration with our @free.maja account.

Free Maja goes Pride

We are also calling on people to take part in the CSD and Pride demonstrations before and after the days of action and to make Maja’s cause visible there. You can find templates to print flyers and a banner at: basc.news/aktionskit-unterstue….

Bring Maja back home! No extraditions to Hungary! Freedom for all antifas!

More concerning: France at rank 47
Germany at rank 27, which is probably too kind

WTF went wrong with so many western countries?

Interestingly, Switzerland is still the only country in the world that practices direct democracy.

I'd say this is evidence that when THE PEPOLE get to tell the government how to manage the country by voting on issues and not just electing politicians, the result is far better!

I never understood why anyone ever trusted politicians to do the right thing.

You, @anonymiss, didn't write the headline. You saw the problem with the headline, but Tom's Hardware apparently did not.

I have a lot of fun laughing at poorly written (or simply wrong) headlines. Could I have done any better? I think I did.

There are sites dedicated to ridiculous headlines: headlines like "British Left Waffles on Falklands."

I've heard of at least one copy editor who lost his job because he (for the fun of it) wrote a terrible headline for an article. There's an English-language newspaper in Japan called the Mainichi. They once published an article about a new device meant to speed up processing of people entering the country. The device was made by Kinki Electric. Kinki is a region of Japan also known as Kansai. The headline was Kinki Device Eases Entry.

Strategic Advantages of Biochar in Carbon Removal Initiatives

As global decarbonization efforts intensify, engineered carbon removal pathways are being rigorously evaluated for permanence, scalability, and co-benefits. Among them, biochar—a solid carbonaceous material produced from biomass via thermal decomposition—offers a compelling profile for both environmental durability and economic feasibility. Integrating a pyrolysis plant into a carbon removal strategy facilitates the systematic conversion of organic residues into stable carbon sinks.

High Permanence with Quantifiable Sequestration

Biochar stores atmospheric carbon in a chemically recalcitrant form. Unlike soil organic matter or afforestation, which are prone to microbial decomposition, biochar persists in soil for centuries. Stable aromatic carbon structures resist degradation, with mean residence times often exceeding 500 years depending on feedstock and process parameters.

A properly managed biochar making machine can sequester 2.2–3.0 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per tonne of biochar produced. These values are independently verifiable under frameworks such as Puro.earth, Verra, and the European Biochar Certificate, providing clear MRV (monitoring, reporting, and verification) compliance for carbon credit issuance.

Compatibility with Agricultural and Forestry Residues

Unlike other carbon removal technologies that demand dedicated energy inputs or specialized environments, biochar production can be co-located with existing biomass supply chains. Forestry trimmings, agricultural husks, manure, and mill residues can be thermochemically stabilized on-site with minimal preprocessing.

A modular biochar reactor allows deployment near feedstock sources, reducing logistical emissions. Moreover, process energy can be recovered via syngas combustion, rendering the system energetically self-sufficient and enhancing lifecycle carbon negativity.

Synergistic Co-benefits in Land Use

Biochar’s agronomic properties amplify its value beyond carbon containment. Its porous structure improves soil aeration, water retention, and microbial habitat. Cation exchange capacity enhances nutrient retention, reducing fertilizer runoff and increasing crop resilience during drought cycles.

In degraded soils, particularly in tropical or semi-arid regions, biochar applications of 5–10 tonnes per hectare have demonstrated yield increases of 10–20%. This improves food security outcomes while generating measurable ecosystem service credits.

Thermochemical Efficiency and Emission Control

Modern pyrolysis systems utilize indirect heating with oxygen exclusion, operating between 450–600 °C. These conditions maximize biochar yield while minimizing the production of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Equipped with gas scrubbers and automated process control, a pyrolysis plant ensures clean operation and compliance with industrial emission standards.

Non-condensable gases and bio-oil fractions—byproducts of the pyrolysis reaction—can be reused as on-site fuel or refined into renewable chemicals, increasing project economics without compromising environmental integrity.

Pathway to Carbon Credit Monetization

Biochar carbon removal (BCR) is recognized by growing voluntary carbon markets. Recent transactions have priced high-quality BCR credits in the range of \$100–\$200 per tonne of CO₂e removed, surpassing many other removal approaches in both price and volume.

The pyrolysis plant’s operating data—mass balance, temperature profile, feedstock carbon content—feeds directly into LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) models and carbon accounting systems. When paired with geospatial tracking of biochar application zones, this creates an auditable chain of custody required for third-party certification.

Alignment with Global Policy and Net-Zero Targets

Biochar fits into national and corporate net-zero strategies by offering removals that are both additional and measurable. Countries such as the United States, Canada, and members of the EU are actively funding biochar R\&D and incentivizing deployment through soil health, waste valorization, and climate-smart agriculture programs.

A pyrolysis plant embedded within industrial or municipal systems can serve dual mandates: sustainable waste treatment and carbon drawdown. This dual utility enhances permitting ease and secures broader stakeholder alignment.

In a landscape where carbon integrity, cost-effectiveness, and scalability define viable removal strategies, biochar stands out. By leveraging a pyrolysis plant as the backbone of the operation, carbon removal projects can achieve high permanence, generate co-benefits, and deliver quantifiable results—positioning biochar as a foundational element in long-term climate mitigation portfolios.

From Pyrolysis Oil to Jet Fuel: A Revolutionary Path to Sustainable Aviation

As the aviation industry faces growing pressure to decarbonize, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) has emerged as a key solution to reducing lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions. While bio-based and synthetic SAF options have received much attention, a less-discussed but highly promising route is now gaining momentum: converting waste tires into jet fuel through continuous pyrolysis.

  1. The Challenge: Greener Skies, Cleaner Sources
Aviation accounts for about 2–3% of global carbon emissions, and its demand is projected to rise sharply in the coming decades. Traditional fossil-based jet fuel remains the dominant energy source, making decarbonization particularly difficult. One of the key strategies to address this challenge is SAF — fuels that can replace conventional kerosene while offering significant emission reductions across their lifecycle.
  2. What is Continuous Tire Pyrolysis?
Continuous pyrolysis is an advanced thermochemical process that decomposes materials like end-of-life tires at high temperatures in an oxygen-free environment continuous tyre pyrolysis plant. Unlike batch pyrolysis, the continuous process allows for uninterrupted feedstock input and product output, making it more efficient and scalable for industrial use.

Through this process, tires — which are composed of synthetic rubber, carbon black, steel, and oils — can be broken down into:

Pyrolysis oil (also called tire-derived oil or TDO)

Carbon black (recovered for industrial reuse)

Pyrolytic gas (used to power the system itself)

Scrap steel (recyclable)

  1. From TDO to Jet Fuel
The key innovation lies in upgrading pyrolysis oil into aviation-grade fuel. This involves several steps:

Hydrotreatment: Removing impurities like sulfur, nitrogen, and aromatic compounds to stabilize the oil.

Hydrocracking or isomerization: Breaking down heavy molecules and rearranging them into hydrocarbons with desired properties.

Distillation and blending: Producing a final SAF product that meets international standards (e.g., ASTM D7566).

The result is a drop-in jet fuel with significantly reduced carbon intensity — and derived from a waste product that would otherwise pollute the environment.

  1. Environmental and Economic Advantages
Carbon reduction: Lifecycle emissions of SAF from tire-derived oil can be up to 80% lower than conventional jet fuel.

Waste valorization: Turns a major pollution source (scrap tires) into a valuable fuel.

Energy self-sufficiency: The pyrolysis process produces its own fuel gas, reducing external energy demand.

Economic potential: With millions of tons of tires discarded globally each year, the feedstock is abundant and cheap.

  1. Conclusion: A Circular Flight Path
The journey from discarded tires to high-altitude jet engines may seem improbable — but it represents a powerful synergy of waste management, green chemistry, and clean transportation. By transforming tire pyrolysis oil into certified jet fuel, we not only address the growing demand for SAF but also chart a new course in the circular economy.

This is not just a technical breakthrough — it’s a pathway revolution for sustainable aviation.
