Starting to look more seriously into the STM32H750/753.
The 753 is the part I really want to use, the 750 is the same die fused down to disable all but the first 128 kB of flash. But I picked up several of them during the chip shorage and I feel like I should put them to use.
They're mostly comparable to the H735 I use now. Key differences: * CPU Fmax down from 550 to 480 MHz * RAM nearly doubled from 564 to 1024 kB * Flash increased from 1 MB to 2 MB in the 753, but reduced to 128 kB in the 750 * 40 more GPIOs (128 -> 168) * Package enlarged from 201 ball 0.65mm (10x10 mm) to 265 ball 0.8mm (14x14 mm).
That last bit is what has me the most interested. The 0.65mm H735 package is usable on OSHPark 4L, barely, but you lose a lot of IO and the parallel memory controller etc. aren't practical to use.
While the H75x is available in the same footprint, you can also get it in the 0.8mm package which should be much more friendly to the large via sizes offered on OSHPark. So it could be a winner for prototypes where I care more about ease of access to IO and MCU-FPGA interfacing than about absolute max CPU performance.
The limited flash on the H750 should mostly be a non issue. My typical firmwares so far are barely over 128 kB all told, and I have a ton of executable RAM to work with.
So I can put a minimal bootloader and BSP (and maybe firmware update SFTP server) in the internal flash, bring up the FPGA, then copy my application image from spare space on the FPGA config flash to SRAM and jump to it.
The only other issue is that I normally run microkvs in the last few flash sectors. So in a single-sector flash part, I can't do that. Instead, I'd need to add a memory mapped interface to the FPGA-attached flash and store my config there. (I could also attach an extra QSPI flash to the MCU but that adds BOM cost, it's more pins to route, and most importantly involves dealing with the cursed OCTOSPI peripheral).
It'd take a bit of coding to get all of this done, but I think it's worth the effort. I may still go with the 753 for new designs long term but since I have 750s on the shelf, might as well use them up for one-off / low volume projects.
The larger BGA ball pitch alone is enough of a reason.

I've always wondered if one could do an 8L expander for those parts. I know some folks are all about making things small but you can get a 440 pin ZIF socket.
I've been using the H757 dual core in the .8mm 256 BGA. I'm pretty happy with it.
It takes a bit to get used to debugging, you flash it using the M7 which does memory for both cores, but if you want to debug the M4 you have to connect without downloading anything.
The biggest pain so far is M4 can't read some sysmem stuff - like ADC calibration values. I use a shared memory struct to pass data between cores.
I use the M4 to handle ADC, UART, etc, and M7 to draw the MIPI display.

@shortstories With the Super Nintendo they designed the ultimate controller, which was modified slightly by Sony and everyone thereafter. I still prefer a d-pad over a joystick for fighting and driving games. But the trigger buttons and 4-button layout for the face were Chef's Kiss good.
@shortstories I respectfully disagree with not recognizing the SNES as incredible hardware with incredible upgrades to chips and software to achieve some amazing results from real creativity. Nintendo cared about their customers and spent a TON of money and effort to show everyone how much had improved and that the SNES wasn't just a money-grab with zero effort put in. It wasn't just a sticker swap.

I'm witnessing professionals spending hours to engineer prompts for Copilot to do basic things like find a line in a file that has a string in it, or figure out who committed most frequently to a sub-path in a repository, or generate boiler plate code for classes.. None of these things require #AI. `grep`, `git log..`, and editor snippets have existed for a long time. They are quick. They are EXACT. They are FREE. They do not boil the oceans. They do not displace the workforce. They are more efficient and productive.
Learn the tools of your trade. If all you're doing is using AI, that means AI can and will replace you.

I'm on a bus to The Cathedral Church of St Machar. It isn't technically a cathedral any more. It was formerly a cathedral (a seat of a bishop), but is a Church of Scotland, which uses a Presbyterian form of governance. It's a bit like how some manorial houses are still styled as "castle" even though there is nothing defensive about their architecture and in many cases, a noble Lord (or Laird in Scotland) no longer lives there.
This simple cross is of an old Pictish style and predates St Machar's being established as a cathedral. It could even be from the period in which Saint Machar was preaching in the area.
The top of this cross is 9th century and is a type of sanctuary cross. It would have stood outside the church in the yard. You could shelter from justice for 40 days by claiming sanctuary at such designated places.
There are some really excellent monuments to be found inside the church and in the church's very crowded yard. Some of the effigy graves are particularly fine and really show the details of the religious vestments these bishops and other high ranking church leaders wore. The one in the bottom left is a guy named Walter Idil who was the Canon of Aberdeen. He died in 1468.
The big star of the cathedral isn't Walter, though, it's the flat ceiling built in ~1520. It's seen as a possible reaction to Martin Luther and has the coats of arms of the Catholic Monarchs of Europe, as well as the pope at the time. It's one of the first large flat ceiling buildings in Great Britain and is considered of international historical importance.
I sat looking up at the coats of arms with my neck craned for quite a while and tried to figure everyone out. Some are easier than others. Here are the arms from Pope Leo X, aka Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici. He was the last person elected pope who was not an ordained priest at time of his election. In fact, the last pope who wasn't an outright bishop was in the 19th century.
Most symbols of "popery" didn't survive the particularly violent and destructive form the reformation in Scotland took, but evidently this one did, perhaps because it is really hard to get at when it is way up in the air in the middle of a ceiling

After leaving the cathedral, I went for a long walk through Seaton park, which is adjacent. There is a mound known as the Motte of Tillydrone. Archeological investigations point at it being used defensively in the 2nd century and it may have been a burial cairn even earlier.
Just a little further on into the park I encountered this Z plan tower house, originally built in the early 1600's. It was owned by the Keiths who feuded with the Irvines of Drum. I say originally built because M&S so wanted the land it was on that they paid to have the whole thing rebuilt in the park in the 1960's, so this is a castle not at it's original location. It's generally known as Benholms Lodge, which is also the name given to the gatehouse at Dunnottar castle, also owned by them.
Encountered a good amount of wildlife. Had my big Nikon along, so took a lot of telephoto shots, which I haven't had a chance to review. Saw some swans and their young cygnets, as well as some herons.
Further on down, I encountered the ancient Brig o' Balgownie. Construction may have started as early as 1290 under a bishop and been interrupted by the Wars of Independence and then completed under Robert the Bruce around 1320.
It has a highly peaked arch like the hall in Drum's great tower, and so some think they were both designed by the same person, Richard Cementarius, who may have been the first Provost of Aberdeen among other positions of responsibility.
The peak is 56 feet above the water at low tide. It's very impressive for such an old structure.

So I can put a minimal bootloader and BSP (and maybe firmware update SFTP server) in the internal flash, bring up the FPGA, then copy my application image from spare space on the FPGA config flash to SRAM and jump to it.
The only other issue is that I normally run microkvs in the last few flash sectors. So in a single-sector flash part, I can't do that. Instead, I'd need to add a memory mapped interface to the FPGA-attached flash and store my config there. (I could also attach an extra QSPI flash to the MCU but that adds BOM cost, it's more pins to route, and most importantly involves dealing with the cursed OCTOSPI peripheral).
It'd take a bit of coding to get all of this done, but I think it's worth the effort. I may still go with the 753 for new designs long term but since I have 750s on the shelf, might as well use them up for one-off / low volume projects.
The larger BGA ball pitch alone is enough of a reason.

Wow! Please continue to create a future that will hopefully help me forget the bygone era (I hope) of updating device firmware via XMODEM/CRC (I suppose I should at least be thankful that creator chose an XMODEM variant with a CRC!) or TFTP.
Though I wonder, (looking locally at some aarch64 ssh daemons):

I guess SFTP support might eat up a lot of that constrained flash space?

in reply to Andrew Zonenberg • • •I've been using the H757 dual core in the .8mm 256 BGA. I'm pretty happy with it.
It takes a bit to get used to debugging, you flash it using the M7 which does memory for both cores, but if you want to debug the M4 you have to connect without downloading anything.
The biggest pain so far is M4 can't read some sysmem stuff - like ADC calibration values. I use a shared memory struct to pass data between cores.
I use the M4 to handle ADC, UART, etc, and M7 to draw the MIPI display.
