Here's my probably unpopular opinion about a lot of recent US social media activism. If you're not willing to condemn all political parties doing a bad thing, then your complaint about only one group doing a bad thing that others also do, may actually be hollow and performative.
It probably even takes less characters to post condemning the thing itself and the institutions that allow it, then targeting only one subgroup of people doing the overall thing.

Today in Labor History July 10, 1894: The Pullman Rail Car strike was put down by 14,000 federal and state troops. Over the course of the strike, soldiers killed 70 American Railway Union (ARU) members. Eugene Debs and many others were imprisoned during the strike for violating injunctions. Debs founded the ARU in 1893. The strike began, in May, as a wildcat strike, when George Pullman laid off employees and slashed wages, while maintaining the same high rents for his company housing in the town of Pullman, as well as the excessive rates he charged for gas and water. During the strike, Debs called for a massive boycott against all trains that carried Pullman cars. While many adjacent unions opposed the boycott, including the conservative American Federation of Labor, the boycott nonetheless affected virtually all train transport west of Detroit. I've done the questioning twice. First time was when I was about 9 and I thought I was growing a penis (actually, I have asymmetric labia minora and one is pretty big). After a long dark night of the soul, I concluded I was a girl and nobody needed to know I had a penis because I was fucking 9 and nobody should be looking at my junk.
Questioned again about 10 years ago, because I kept having sex with gay men. Properly put the work in this time, cracked out the resources and workbooks, and concluded that yup, the doctor was right when she picked a gender for me.
As for the gay men thing, look, a hole is a hole and it turns out the twinks aren't fussy in the middle of a serious top drought.
I did this several years ago and I certainly found it super helpful. I am definitely cis but helped me understand gender more and figure out some of my own relationship to my gender.
As a dude from a small town, I have always hated mainstream male norms. No, I don't like sportsball. I am afraid of heights. I don't want to hunt, fish, fix things or get my hands dirty. Home improvement sounds like hell to me. I'm not trans, but women know how to live life well.
A little coffee, morning yoga, a stroll in the park, light reading, a few good shows, some household chores, and my day is pretty full. And why are women the only ones who get to carry purses? Pockets suck.
There are so many people out there who never even considered questioning their gender, who accept that they must be cis because how they feel is the only definition of cis-ness they know, so logically they can only be cis.
And I know this because I was one of them up until about ten years ago or so.
I've just never thought about it. The few close male friends I've never felt a physical attraction to and I have had many female friends I did not feel attracted to.
I once had intimate relations with a friend because she expressed a desire to and I really didn't care one way or the other.
Having said all that that is unrelated, the aesthetic of either of those two genders is appealing, just not over stimulating.

I think the biggest problems currently facing humans (specifically in the general region I call home; there are others elsewhere) are hollowing of democratic society, and the climate disaster. In any society where money can be used to buy influence (which is effectively any society that has money at all - the buying of influence can range from running influence campaigns, to outright trying to buy an election, to buying a major medium like eg. what Musk did with Twitter), billionaires are almost definitionally an anti-democratic force: They have enormously more power than any other individual, but they have no democratic mandate behind that power. They can (and often do) make decisions that have huge impacts on many other people's lives, with the affected people having zero influence - this is *the opposite* of democratic governance, and people subjected to seemingly random whims of billionaires understandably become disillusioned in democratic norms. (This is one, but not the only, cause of the rise of modern fascism.)
Billionaires generally lead disproportionately energy- (and emissions-) intensive lives - by 2024, the emissions caused by a single billionaire in 90 minutes was about equal to the lifetime emissions of an average person (see oxfam.org/en/press-releases/bi…). Many of them have fortunes directly tied up in the fossil fuel economy (or in activities that are powered by fossil fuels) and actively resist legislative action that tries to curb emissions. Furthermore, the enormous fortunes commanded by billionaires will *only* be used to combat said problems if a billionaire chooses to - which they often won't, because both are directly against their current financial interest. If all those resources were directly available for eg. climate change mitigation, decarbonization and economic aid for the global south (rather than eg. funding private jets, recreational space tourism and renting an entire city centre for a wedding), we'd all be in a lot less dire situation than we are, I think.

This is present in capitalism. However, I don't think, or at least not persuaded that any (sustainable) political system is immune to these issues.

@kravemir @m Those problems have been present in every political system ever practiced, and I'm not sure they can ever be *eliminated* - this is my main beef with "utopian" schools of left-wing politics, in fact. Even in an anarchist commune, you'd very likely see informal power (and luxury excess) accruing to the most charismatic anarchists. You have to build specific mechanisms to mitigate these problems, and pretending they don't exist is an effective way to make sure they don't get mitigated.
(I think anyone who has spent significant time in an actual anarchist activist community has probably seen a variation of this play out. I certainly have. "We don't have any leader, and we all agree exactly who our leader isn't!", to riff off Terry Pratchett.)
But I do think they can be substantially reduced (and yes, capitalism is an obstacle to that). At present, a lower-hanging fruit for doing this (lower-hanging than The Glorious Revolution That Fixes Everything, at least) would be some form of income or wealth cap that effectively makes it impossible for any individual to become a billionaire.
The level of wealth and income inequality in the United States today surpasses the then-absurd extremes of the Gilded Age of a century ago. Sure, unevan distribution happens, but this particular neoliberal political system effects a wealth pump upwards into the hands of a very few individuals at an unprecedented rate and scale that cannot be sustained. Billionaires are a visible symptom of the pathology. According to Peter Turchin, this wealth pump will almost surely result in a catastrophe of some kind that could end up being bloody; even if you don't believe Turchin's theories, it'll certainly result in unacceptable mass immiseration (and arguably already has). A smarter system would employ government power and resources to distribute wealth more evenly and fairly, something we used to do in the United States but stopped doing from the 1970s onward.
As for power being in the wrong hands, there are no right hands for power to be in. There are no special anointed ones who are immune to the corrupting influence of power. Power too should be distributed, to reduce this risk.
Lest anyone accuse me of things I don't actually mean: I'm not advocating we eat the rich - I'm vegetarian, and also I'm pretty sure they're full of heavy metals and other horrible environmental toxins.
Our woke-lefty politicians, in their grand crusade against overtourism — oh that smells like some eco-friendly suit-and-tie spiel, all neat and tidy — are actually just throwing class contempt right in our faces.
Their dream? That Bob, Ginette, and Roger stay quietly in their living rooms watching slideshows like back in the ’70s, not a hair out of place, no wild adventures.
Planes? They should remain a private club: for those who know how to behave, who know how to spend taxpayers’ money without causing a fuss.

Und mir dann die Gelegenheit gibt zu lernen, was heute der wissenschaftliche Konsens dazu ist Wie ich darauf komme? Die Große macht nächstes Jahr Abi, und es gibt Fächer wie Bio, wo das, was ich gelernt habe, mittlerweile völlig überholt ist.
uh das klingt nach einer richtig guten Idee und unterstützt wunderbar den Ansatz des lebenslangen Lernens. Mensch lernt ja bekanntermaßen niemals aus; zu überprüfen was sich denn geändert hat reicht die Zeit meistens nicht... kann man das nicht mit ein bisschen KI irgendwie lustig gestalten... so als "daily dose of science update" quasi á la "hallo leisefuxX. wusstest du eigentlich schon, dass es mittlerweile .... gibt und sich dementsprechend .... geändert hat?" wäre großartig!
@leisefuxx Finde da jetzt natürlich nicht, aber vor ein paar Jahren bin ich mal über eine englischsprachige Website gestoßen, die nach Jahrgang aufgelistet hat, was sich seitdem an Weltwissen geändert hat.

@_tillwe_ @leisefuxx Schon versucht zu finden. Unglaublich, wie viele Click-Bait-Strecken (und auch Artikel von halbwegs seriösen Publikationen) es dazu gibt, aber das sind dann immer nur so sieben bis 15 Beispiele und nicht nach Jahrgängen filterbar.
@_tillwe_ @HeptaSean @leisefuxx Aus den Beispielen etwas, das mich skeptisch macht: "Vaccines cause autism" - War das wirklich jemals "Stand der Forschung"? Und Original 2010? Wakefields Paper war von 1998 und wurde 2004 teilweise sowie 2010 vollständig von "The Lancet" zurückgezogen.
@rostbot @_tillwe_ @leisefuxx Kann mir auch nicht wirklich vorstellen, dass Wakefield je so etabliert war, dass das auch nur in die Nähe von Schulstoff gekommen wäre (was “since graduation” im Seiten-Titel ja irgendwie nahelegt). Wahrscheinlich einfach nur ein *so* prominentes Beispiel von einer zerstörerischen Widerlegung, dass sie es unbedingt drin haben wollten.
Ich habe damals in UK studiert und schon die unmittelbare Berichterstattung über das 1998 Paper mitbekommen. In Wissenschaftskreisen war das vom Start weg eine Lachnummer und hat praktisch vom nächsten Tag an als Paradebeispiel für statistische Denkfehler gedient. Noch vor 2000 gab es dann schon eine ‘offizielle' Review von Dutzenden von Experten, die eine komplette Abwesenheit irgendeiner Evidenz für die Sache festgehalten hat. Also dass das Wakefield Paper keinerlei wissenschaftliche Qualität hat, war schon klar, lange, lange bevor dann rauskam, dass es sogar ein Fake war.

En #España🇪🇸, quien determina lo que es la ley son las Cortes Generales. Un juez que no acepta ese principio tan básico (que está en el artículo primero del Código Civil) no puede ocupar su posición. Y quienes le permitan esta arbitrariedad no merecen la responsabilidad de vigilarle.

Ice is bad is less effective in this sense than trump is using ice to do significantly more bad even if the democrats helped along the way.
Ultimately, I’m currently in various intersections of specific people want to murder me, & almost none of them are democrats, and they certainly aren’t leading the charge. It takes way less spoons to say the GOP wants me dead than to explain politics.

You could say: the US systemically engages in fascist policing and using state violence against poor and non-white groups, and it needs to stop
Instead of saying one political party, in this current moment is doing this bad stuff, and other sides are less bad even if they do it too, so we need to stop the thing we're seeing on news right now, but it would harm us to discuss how other groups do this or how the US has done this for centuries
