Not everything after a ? can always be removed, for instance with youtube.com/watch?v=(barf) the v=(barf) bit is the video ID and you need that. But most things can go!
You can even do that automatically thanks to uBlock Origin, you need to activate the "AdGuard URL Tracking Protection" list (for some reason it's not activated by default) and all tracking shit in the url is removed
Enough people have already mentioned that you can NOT just remove everything after "?", but there's more wrong here.
While YouTubes "si" query parameter can track you and who you send a link to, that is NOT true for static parameters like "utm_source" with "newsletter" or "utm_medium" with "email". All they tell the website operator is that the link was clicked X times from within the newsletter and Y times from an e-mail, but it's impossible to draw any connection here between two individuals that shared this link in some way.
These parameters aren't only important to advertisers (they usually aren't at all), but they are important to the website operator, especially if it's a small business with limited resources. It shows them if a newsletter is actually read or how many clicks they received from Mastodon and so on. It shows them that the mediums they are using are actually worth pursuing or if they should focus their attention on something else.

if you are providing a public service supported by public grants, those funding agencies needs "key performance indicators". They essentially ask you to prove that you have users and where they are coming from, if your outreach is successful etc ... It's debatable if that is good, but it is how it is atm. Yes! Never use the SHARE button. This may have already been suggested but just select and copy the web address from the address bar at the top of the page of your browser. I've been doing it that way for years.
I don't know about si= 's but, I did run a website with Google Analytics and the utm_source, utm_medium, etc are used to identify where you put a link and what medium of media it was placed on so you can tell if you're reaching your audience. So if you print paper flyers with a QR Code in the Pizza Shop, your utm_medium=paper and your utm_source=pizza%20shop%20flyer.
Also, if you are on Mastodon and use the Mastodon web UI, you should check whether it allows the browser to send the referer header to remote links that users click on. Just some time ago, Eugen "recommended" instance admins to change settings to allow it "to make website owners more aware of Mastodon." (This setting can only be changed by Mastodon instance admins, not by users.) In my opinion, this usually reveals more information about the user clicking on the link than any of the tracking params present in the link. For example, the targeted website will know that a user coming from a certain IP "is most likely to" have an account on a certain instance. The privacy problem will be more serious if the user clicking the link has an account on the targeted website, because the website now knows a certain logged-in user is most likely to have an account on another website. While this threat is relatively small for huge instances, users on smaller instances will be tracked more easily.
Moreover, if the user lives under the rule of a government that can possibly get them into trouble for accessing the Fediverse, the referer header will sell them out to the websites (that may well give this info to that government) whose link the user clicked from the Mastodon instance.
I am not aware of any other Fediverse software that encourages sending referer header to remote links or does this by default. Pleroma sets the referrer-policy to same-origin.

@slamy we were there a couple of weeks ago and picked a tick off the finance, so hopefully it’s not Lyme disease. Based on how long she’s had the fever and a couple other symptoms, I’m guessing it’s some sort of infection that some antibiotics can clear up.

While YouTubes "si" query parameter can track you and who you send a link to, that is NOT true for static parameters like "utm_source" with "newsletter" or "utm_medium" with "email". All they tell the website operator is that the link was clicked X times from within the newsletter and Y times from an e-mail, but it's impossible to draw any connection here between two individuals that shared this link in some way.
These parameters aren't only important to advertisers (they usually aren't at all), but they are important to the website operator, especially if it's a small business with limited resources. It shows them if a newsletter is actually read or how many clicks they received from Mastodon and so on. It shows them that the mediums they are using are actually worth pursuing or if they should focus their attention on something else.

refererheader to remote links that users click on. Just some time ago, Eugen "recommended" instance admins to change settings to allow it "to make website owners more aware of Mastodon." (This setting can only be changed by Mastodon instance admins, not by users.) In my opinion, this usually reveals more information about the user clicking on the link than any of the tracking params present in the link. For example, the targeted website will know that a user coming from a certain IP "is most likely to" have an account on a certain instance. The privacy problem will be more serious if the user clicking the link has an account on the targeted website, because the website now knows a certain logged-in user is most likely to have an account on another website. While this threat is relatively small for huge instances, users on smaller instances will be tracked more easily.Moreover, if the user lives under the rule of a government that can possibly get them into trouble for accessing the Fediverse, the referer header will sell them out to the websites (that may well give this info to that government) whose link the user clicked from the Mastodon instance.
I am not aware of any other Fediverse software that encourages sending referer header to remote links or does this by default. Pleroma sets the
