@Yoss1960 I mean, it might all go tits up. But the product they're putting out is real enough, and their current goals are realistic. In fact, I'd say they made the right call, bundling a customized Ultimate 64 in a case with mech keyboard -- it gives them a real product they can deliver on time.

I can understand how someone might hope Commodore might become a real competitor in computing again with cutting edge tech comparable to the Amiga back then, but that's just not realistic. The biggest companies in the world can't even figure out how to make cool new tech, they're just flailing putting out dumb shit. There's no revolutionary improvement left. Computers are cheap enough and good enough for anything.
@swelljoe That's the thing, though: Commodore don't need to take over the world. The investment is low seven figures, which means they only need to make a quality product or five that make a reasonable profit.
yeah, I think the folks behind it are making very reasonable choices. They're not slapping the brand on bullshit (e.g. cheap PC clones with a dumb-ass Linux version that looks like it's made by/for children), which is a great start. They're embracing all the folks who are already working in the space...the people who have implemented Commodore computers and accessories and software from scratch in various ways.
I'd love to see a ~$400 Amiga 1200. Fingers crossed that comes to pass.
@swelljoe I'm 100% certain they'd love to do that -- but it faces more barriers, because the Amiga IP wasn't included in the sale. Licensing it is certainly possible (THEA500 is a thing after all!) so maybe.

yeah, I'm not informed enough to make any recommendations. I love the Commodore 64, but I feel like it's not quite enough computer to spend a lot of time with. I want 80 columns, stereo sound, and a wee bit more color and pixels. Not a lot, mind you. Just a little more. A Commodore 128 would almost scratch the itch (the 80-column graphics chip has too many limitations to really do the job). The C65 definitely does scratch the itch, but I don't know how broad that nostalgia is.
@swelljoe Based on who is involved and what I know they can do, I seriously think there's more coming than just a new C64. It would be a waste of talent otherwise. You don't need Jeri or Bil to put out a rebadged Ultimate 64 in a nice case.
yeah, that's my thinking, as well. I'd even be enthusiastic about a new computer in the Plus/4 lineage. But, that's probably a dumb idea from a "make some money" perspective.
so, maybe they ought to work something out with the MEGA65 folks. I'd like it to have a slightly better case (it's not as sturdy as I'd like), and a new version with all the fixes. And, having Commodore branding and a legitimate claim to the original OS (with fixes) would be great. If volume could bring the price down that'd also be good.
yeah, it's nostalgic, but expensive and delivers no real value. You can't even really buy floppies anymore, we're all just re-using old stock made 20 years ago and hoping it doesn't die. A lower-cost version of the C65 without the drive would be fantastic.

The things that will be shipping with the Commodore name are things that already exist, and could exist without this having happened. They're cool things, and they don't need a Commodore name to be cool, but having the Commodore name may bring in new people who didn't know how to tap into the retro Commodore community.
but, folks who want Commodore to return as a colossus that ships world-record numbers of units and ushers in a new era of personal computing are going to be disappointed. Nobody can do that because the world has changed.
It's dumb to hate on this stuff because it's a realistic plan meant for hobbyists, not for the masses. If they can increase production runs by tapping into a broader market with effective branding and marketing, they can drive prices down some, but that's about it.
@swelljoe I'm not seeing any of that -- what I'm seeing is either people genuinely happy that they can buy a C64 that works with a modern screen, or people being super bitter about the whole thing.
yeah, haters gonna hate. But, I think there's also a lot of unresolved grief among folks who lived through the death of Commodore. People were really invested in that, and there were so many dumb and sad disappointments along the way. Management failures, Gateway, Escom, all that bullshit. It felt like vultures just picking at the corpse, and that's pretty upsetting for folks whose identity was tied up in Commodore.
I view the haters as people who've been hurt and need therapy.

@cstross it is so incredibly hard to hire low-level hardware+firmware devs. In the valley, they're paid a fortune and are often terrible. But so few people know how to do it that "terrible" is better than nothing. And, they trend much older than the average frontend or cloud developer.
@cstross I mean, we're still shipping ten+ year old microcontrollers in our robots. Partly because they don't need more capability and partly because the firmware folks we've had haven't been up to the task of major upgrades. We have people who could do it, but it'd require dropping everything else.
So, at some point it becomes retrocomputing, because you need an old Windows to run the old Keil compiler to build the old source. (We're not at that point, but I can see it happening.)
to be fair, the Amiga wasn’t „real“ Commodore either. And the Atari ST arguably more Commodore than the ST. 😀 Either way: I am looking from the sidelines how this turns out. I am not in the market for the machine, but maybe others are…?
@cstross @swelljoe Is that really such a risk? I get the impression that there is always a good fraction of programmers interested in low-level, close-to-the-hardware stuff. Often more than there is demand for really, with most embedded programming being pretty high-level nowadays.

💧 Underwater turbine spinning for 6 years off Scotland’s coast is a breakthrough for tidal energy
The MeyGen tidal energy project off the coast of Scotland has four turbines producing 1.5 megawatts each, enough electricity collectively to power up to 7,000 homes annually. On Thursday, the Swedish company SKF announced that its bearings and seals on one of the turbines had passed the 6 1/2-year mark without needing unplanned or disruptive maintenance. It has been working closely with the industry for a decade on design and testing.
Erwin Schrödinger (Austria-Ireland. 1887-1966), who seems to have been not very fond of house cats, proposed a theoretical exercise for quantum physics.
The approach is simple, although its implications are very complex. A cat has been placed inside a box. The box has a device that, with no definite time, releases a sort of lethal mechanism and the cat will die. Since the box is airtight, it is not known whether the cat is still alive or has already perished. Once the box is opened, one possibility or the other is proven. The previous moment, when we do not know if it is alive or dead, suggests that there are two worlds or two simultaneous universes. In one the cat is already dead, in the other it is still alive. A mortal mechanism activated and not activated; a cat alive and dead at the same time; a superposition of states according to quantum physics.
Let’s leave aside, for now, the references to comic book multiverses and the consequences in quantum physics. Let us also leave aside Don Schördinger’s animosity towards cats, and that he obviously did not know much about those felines (anyone who has dealt with them knows that they would not let themselves be caught, much less allow themselves to be locked up, without protesting and without defending themselves -even more so if it is a… cat-dog-). Let’s also not take too much notice that the cat is imprisoned and condemned to death, unless someone sees fit to open the box when the lethal mechanism has not been activated, and the cat jumps out and frees itself from the prison.
This theoretical exercise is supposed to be a basis for showing that worlds in several universes are possible, that is, in a multiverse (although it is also to show that the laws of quantum physics do not apply in everyday life).
As far as my limited knowledge of comics allows me, I understand that, in those diverse worlds, the individual still prevails, but in different versions. In one world, Sheldon Cooper (TV series “The Big Bang Theory”), is a scientist with social problems. In another, he is an irredeemable womanizer. In another, he is a “popular” judge in Mexico’s judicial system (oh, I know, my perversity is sublime).
And this digression that, I hope, is perplexing, comes to the topic, or point supposedly that even with the imaginative capacity to raise the simultaneous existence of the living cat and the dead cat, the possibility (or the universe) of there being one or several cats that refuse to enter the box is not raised. And perhaps with the aggravating factor that the supposed cat is actually a cat-dog.
In pointing out some possibilities, others are omitted.
When talking about the capitalist system, the different proposals refer to what they can do to improve the conditions of the cat locked in the trap, to lengthen its life (or its chances of life), or to “humanize” the lethal device.
It is, shall we say, what progressivism is all about. Definition of progressivism? Well, those who are leftists until the eve of taking office and having a position, office, pay, well, then. Then they stop being leftist, they become the establishment, and disguise their pragmatism (which leads them to ally and join their enemies of the eve -and to distance themselves from their social past-), as “political realism.” It is, then, a capital-friendly left. That is to say, a “cool”, pretty, demure and blushing right wing.
In this case, progressivism promises, on the eve of the event, to free the cat from its prison. Then, because he cannot or will not do it, he “changes” his proposal: “I will make you more comfortable”; “I will get better conditions for your death”; “I will fight so that the lethal mechanism does not activate too quickly.” Or, he may instead urge the prisoner to hang on, since he has a 50% chance of temporarily surviving. Imprisoned, yes, but alive.

The capitalist system is that box. Inside it, multitudes wait, without knowing it, for the murderous mechanism to be activated. Wars, famines, “natural” catastrophes, violent assaults, assassinations, governmental arbitrariness, destructions that will have to solve the enigma: “to live or to die.”
In the box there are those who have the crime of being a woman, boy or girl, young, old, other, dark-skinned, native, with a foreign language in their own land, and so on. No matter their condition, gender, race, ideology, religion, manner, stature, physical complexion: that person is inside the box and is subject to those deadly laws.
Not only without the possibility of getting out, but also without even imagining that another world exists out there.
The option to delay death or improve the conditions of condemnation is submission and acceptance to be part of the showcase of “weird things” that the system exhibits for its own amusement. Woman, Non-binary person, Native, Race, Neighborhood, Nationality, every “oddity” has its place in the curiosity store if it behaves “well.” If not, well, the “invisible hand of the market” will pull the exterminating lever.
Example: the crime of being born, growing up and fighting in Palestinian lands is not to accept being part of the showcase of capital. And to resist and rebel against the machine. The machine wants a recreational center in Gaza and Palestinian civilization is in its way, the Palestinian people are fighting for a land to live in.
Palestine is the best example of the terminal crisis of the so called “Nation States” and their governments. They do not command, they only obey at convenience. They are incapable of presenting an independent, dignified and consistent foreign policy.
And in the ongoing mass murder, the complicity and neglect of the governments of the planet (with a few exceptions), is pathetic. The police of the different European and American governments repressing the demonstrations for the cessation of the genocide in Palestine, are the best oratory about Western “humanism”.
In the world above, European governments are the idle and useless court of the reigning king, Russia and China are the counts and dukes conspiring for regicide, and offering an alternate monarch. The rest of the national governments in the world, except for those who have clearly spoken out against it, are the busy pages, stressed by the continuous demands and harassments of the royal family.
Who are those that contemplate, operate, have fun and make bets on what happens in the box? The big financial, commercial, industrial and, now, digital and aerospace capital.
The governments of the world, for the most part, are just the ticket-takers of the bets, the “brokers” on the stock exchanges where the wars are always up, and life below… down. And, as the Mileis of the world are and will be, they are the ones who are sent to buy and serve the wine that will preside over the monarchic banquets (the chainsaw is an autochthonous detail).

However, there are those who consider another possibility: not to enter the box or to get out of it.
Moreover, there are those who question the box itself, its eternal and omnipotent existence; and its claim to be the only universe that tolerates the existence, within itself, of diversity, of several universes or multiverses… domesticated.
Those people who are posing that are what we Zapatistas call “resistance and rebellion.” Resistance to enter the box or, if you are inside, Rebellion to fight to get out.
Resistance and Rebellion that proposes the destruction of the box, of the logic that created it and of the belief that “something else” is not possible.

There are plenty of people with visual impairments as common as astigmatism who can’t read light text on dark background, because it’s like staring at a strong lightbulb in the dark.
Yes, I can *somtimes* use reader mode, but 1/ I shouldn’t have to, and 2/ that means all the trouble you went to to design your site was for nothing wasn’t it?

👍 A few month ago, I noticed I had hard times reading code on my screen, its was blurry. And I stumble upon someone saying it can happen if you have astigmatism or other troubles.
I've read a bit about that, and I switched all my tools, terminal, IDE, database GUI etc on light themes, just to give a try. It felt a bit strange strange the first days but I read really better.
When I encounter a dark mode site without that option I go straight to reader mode, losing all the author's formatting changes but, hey, it's readable.
If reader mode doesn't work, I close the tab and move on.
I prefer dark mode, but I _absolutely_ think it should be a choice. Makes sense to go with the user's system setting, but could add a toggle in addition for extra points.
the problem is that CSS does not distinguish between "no preference" and "prefers light", so if we want dark by default, light can only be a toggle. automatic switching only works for themes that are light by default

Just a few lines of CSS if you layed out your CSS in the correct way. If not it's a refactoring.
I don't say, don't do it. But sometimes it's much more work than just changing some lines of code.
Especially if your CSS is older than a year.
I made the mistake in one of my projects back then not thinking of light mode (and wasn't aware of the accessibility implications) and now it's a big refactoring. Yes the code is rushed and it's entirely my fault.
But the time needed to fix this properly I was able to add light mode (or dark mode respectively) to 6 other sites.
While I agree that honouring theme selections is an easy accessibility fix that every website should implement, I never understood how astigmatism was particularly affected by dark themes as someone who has had astigmatism for about as long as they've been able to string together words into a full sentence and strongly prefers dark themes.
at the same time, please don't lock users into whatever color mode the stystem setting has. i prefer dark mode for most things, but some products have a darkmode thats SO AWFUL that i cant look at it for more than a few seconds without getting eyestrain, and most of those dont allow me to change to a different mode (or make it really hard to)

My FIL collects and repairs 50s old cars. When we visit them we chat about our hobbies (without really having passion for each other’s) but found out and laughed that its always same 😁 scalpers scalping, people saying that replacing that one original part that could kill you with something modern ruined it, etc. Tbh everyone who keeps the thing going in any form does great job. No one is ruining it.
There are also some cases where Emulation/FPGA/Repro is the only accessible/affordable way to get into retro tech, either because the genuine hardware is too expensive to get, or literally does not exist anymore, or replacement components are no longer manufactured or available, and everybody who wants to play with retro should be allowed and encouraged to poke at retro in the ways that are most accessible and affordable to them.
I enjoy using the original machines I have and I also love emulation.
For example, I have a MZ-80K and a couple of MZ-700s, but I don't have room for a MZ-80A. I wrote an emulator for it (and the 80K) on the Pi Pico instead. The emulator is just as much fun and the finished item fits into my pocket ...
I'm also lucky enough to own a UK101, but Grant Searle's FPGA recreation of it is far less temperamental and much more practical to use on a whim. I can also easily run the emulator with 40K of RAM if I want to!
FPGA and emulation are great ways to share the things we love with people who do not have the resources or knowhow to obtain and work with vintage tech. You aren't keeping a platform alive by pushing people away from it, all you're doing is guaranteeing it's slide into obscurity.
You have generations of young, enthusiastic nerds, eager and willing to build on the shoulders of giants, bring new perspectives and do cool new things which we never thought possible way back when, clone systems and emulators open the door for them to do so.
The clue is in the title: "#retrocomputing". You can do new shit with old stuff, or old shit with new stuff.
It's not "historically accurate computing", in which you can only use games you've personally bought in Woolworths for 1.99, after a weeks long paper round job, (or copied from school friends on tape) where even using the modern internet for resources and software is technically cheating.

Indeed. The only way the things we're using now will be able to be preserved for future generations is literally through some form of simulation, be it by the execution of program instructions in an emulator, or via the replication of logic gates in a programmable logic array (or some combination of both).
I don't like it either. It's the same logic, just running on a different piece of silicon. Often with an outboard CPU exactly the same as the one in the original machine. Many of them are built from reverse-engineered ASICs or original schematics. They're better than software emulators.
And with the price of original hardware and software, they make the space accessible to newcomers. Which might be why people are upset...

Usually it is from someone who has the belief that their way is the best way. Someone so unquestionably right in their opinion that they cannot conceive of why anyone else would think different.

Also, that's a too-narrow interpretation of 'retro' itself to say it's only about hardware. Is a person whose hobby is playing retro games not 'retro'? It's the playing of the game that is their hobby. Not which pile of fused sand is used to play it on.
For many people, things like emulators or FPGA-based systems are what allow them to access that part of the hobby.
Gatekeeping is for people who want to feel special and exclusive. They need to get over it.
I feel like a lot of people could do to breathe in and out slowly, close their eyes with their legs crossed, and tell themselves "my tastes and preferences are valid, the things that get me into the hobby are real and the things I love about them, but they aren't the universal standard." Like, I definitely really prefer actual simpler ASICs and big, densely populated boards, but that's my tastes, not universal truths, and the first one isn't even universally a dealbreaker to me.

I have a classic C64 and an Ultimate 64. I have a classic ZX Spectrum and a ZX Spectrum Next.
You know what? I love all my machines, and wouldn't want to give away any of them. When I'm in a retro mood, I prefer the classic machines. But to be honest, the modern FPGA machines are just easier to handle. (And they have HDMI connectors 😆 )
I consider retro computing the umbrella term for newer stuff recreating the original stuff and also the original stuff as well (that one I place in a vintage computing subcategory). Both are valid, but have key differences:

Al-Quds Brigades targets forces across Gaza
Simultaneously, al-Quds Brigades—the military wing of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ)—confirmed multiple successful operations targeting armored vehicles. The group detonated a pre-planted anti-tank explosive device east of al-Tuffah, destroying a Merkava tank during its incursion.
Another explosive device was used to destroy a tank east of al-Zaytoun neighborhood. Fighters returning from the operation reported direct hits and confirmed the tank was neutralized.
Earlier in the day, al-Quds Brigades said its fighters struck a military vehicle along the Kissufim supply route northeast of Khan Younis using a pre-planted improvised explosive device (IED). Additionally, a barrel-shaped explosive device destroyed another military vehicle in the Sheikh Nasser area east of Khan Younis.
Occupation troops were also targeted with mortar fire on Jabal al-Sawrani, east of al-Tuffah, where occupation forces have been massing in recent days.

Communist revolutionay Julia Njoki was murdered by police in a cell in the Nanyuki police station, a city in central Kenya. Julia Njoki was kept in detention because she was unable to pay the deposit of 50,000 shillings decided by a Kenyan court. She died following multiple head injuries.
Her death comes in the context of a huge uprising against the right wing government.
The death toll from the uprising in Kenya has surged to over 30 people,with at least 107 others wounded during the nationwide marches.
The marches saw clashes erupt between protesters and police in the capital, Nairobi, as well as the city of Eldoret, with the KNCHR accusing the police of cooperating with armed gangs, who were armed with machetes and spears, in the wake of the violence.

I can understand how someone might hope Commodore might become a real competitor in computing again with cutting edge tech comparable to the Amiga back then, but that's just not realistic. The biggest companies in the world can't even figure out how to make cool new tech, they're just flailing putting out dumb shit. There's no revolutionary improvement left. Computers are cheap enough and good enough for anything.

They're not slapping the brand on bullshit (e.g. cheap PC clones with a dumb-ass Linux version that looks like it's made by/for children), which is a great start. They're embracing all the folks who are already working in the space...the people who have implemented Commodore computers and accessories and software from scratch in various ways.
I'd love to see a ~$400 Amiga 1200. Fingers crossed that comes to pass.

People were really invested in that, and there were so many dumb and sad disappointments along the way. Management failures, Gateway, Escom, all that bullshit. It felt like vultures just picking at the corpse, and that's pretty upsetting for folks whose identity was tied up in Commodore.
I view the haters as people who've been hurt and need therapy.

Partly because they don't need more capability and partly because the firmware folks we've had haven't been up to the task of major upgrades. We have people who could do it, but it'd require dropping everything else.
So, at some point it becomes retrocomputing, because you need an old Windows to run the old Keil compiler to build the old source. (We're not at that point, but I can see it happening.)
