I don't know what the policies are on mastodon.social, but there are several scam accounts that ask for money. Usually, they claim to be either a Palestinian or a diabetic person. And I'm afraid that those scammy accounts also harm those who really are in need

Somehow I am not surprised in the least that they are (most likely) German. Joined three days ago to lecture the Fediverse on the one true definition of antisemitism, and that Israel could not possibly be committing a genocide. But in a few years, of course, they will always have stood on the right side of history and/or couldn't have known what was happening.
@CadeJohnson I feel you’re overthinking it. Donating directly to Palestinian families keeps them alive for another day. It makes an immediate difference. And that matters in a famine. Aid agencies have aid lined up the border but they are not allowed in by Israel (it’s not compatible with the goals of their genocide).
@CadeJohnson Were any of those accounts confirmed to be legit? Between fraudsters and AI, you have to think ten times before donating to anyone these days. I completely agree with the point about this being akin to a zero sum game. There are trucks full of aid waiting at the border, so this famine is being deliberately manufactured. That creates a terrible ethical dilemma for each of us. Donating might save one person, but there's a clear nefarious outcome: the money gets diverted to smugglers and criminals. It’s a horrible thing to say, but it feels like you're being forced to choose who lives and who dies, all while funding the very people profiting from the crisis. Do the posts I see break my heart? Fuck yes. But should we be answering these calls for help with money? I'm just not sure. I pretty much despise effective altruism and believe individual people matter, but when all you have is a social media post... it feels like an impossible choice.
