One of my favorite programs for the Mac is from a company called Objective Development -- Little Snitch -- and it's a host-based firewall that alerts you anytime something on your computer tries to reach the Internet for the first time (or you can set to always ask all the time, which I wouldn't recommend just because of the alert volume). I personally like to know what programs and apps are doing and with whom they are communicating, and this app is a useful if imperfect way of doing that.
The most jarring aspect of Little Snitch is how some programs suddenly phone home but you have no idea what's going on because the requested IP is some shared Amazon cloud server or something. Even after spending a few minutes digging on the IP, you probably still won't find a hostname and you're no closer to gauging whether you should allow the connection or not. But most of the time the program is silent, operating the background to block or allow various connections that you have specified previously.
Anyway, what I wanted to share that's neat about Little Snitch is when you install an app that you've had on your phone or iPad onto your Mac, suddenly you have a much better idea of where (if not who) your apps are communicating with, and maybe even a little more info about what these apps are actually doing in the background.
The other thing that can be challenging for newbies with Little Snitch is that it can be tough to figure out how to undo an IP or hostname block if it turns out you blocked something like a common CDN or authentication script.
It would be nice if Little Snitch would show at least a bit of sample about what kind of data was transmitted (besides of the ports/protocols), but that would likely require local TLS certificate authority (or similar) for inspecting contents of the encrypted connections.
I also watch every alert and decide whether to all until quit or until restart. I’m frustrated that there seems to be no index or guide to common types. When searching I want to accept the minimum that will allow me To read text and see images, nothing more and then only until quit. *.cdn.* seem safe and “tag” or “doubleclick” seem unnecessary. Any other guides?
For desktop Linux, there's something similar called OpenSnitch. I can't vouch for it because I haven't used it, but I think I read about it a few years ago in Linux [Pro] Magazine.

For me, on my Android phone, it's Glasswire, and it indicated recently a first network connectionan app for a phone I've had for years, with the app install/last updated date of 2008 which predators my phone and glassware app. "AudioMirroring".
Many years ago I used to have a firewall like that. Probably on W95 or in the (DR-)DOS era. No idea any more with OS/2 2.1. I guess nothing ever replaced it.
Excellent app. You can also download and install publicly available blocklists of thousands of tracking sites. I found I didn’t have the patience to analyze outgoing destinations for every app. The blocklists probably miss some problematic sites, but using them seems like an easy win.

Deleting photos from Google Photos is a miserable experience, by the way. There’s no easy way to bulk delete and it takes ages for the storage amounts listed on your account to catch up.
And it never seems to *actually* deleting everything you select. Some of the photos/videos show up in your account again. You basically have to go through the deletion process a handful of times before you eventually get everything.
