How can the International Criminal Court achieve justice for women?

Review: Feminist Judgments: Reimagining the International Criminal Court – edited by Kcasey McLoughlin, Rosemary Grey, Louise Chappell & Suzanne Varrall (Cambridge University Press)
Some say the law / ought not to bend. // That it should be a neutral, / certain thing. // But there are reasons / judgement and interpretation / are bequeathed / to human / – humane – / hearts, and heads.

– Excerpt from The Hope of a Thousand Small Lights, Maxine Beneba Clarke

On January 23 2025, the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) chief prosecutor applied for arrest warrants for the Taliban’s supreme leader and Afghanistan’s chief justice, charging them with the persecution of women, a crime against humanity. It was a long overdue decision.

These arrest warrants, said Amnesty International, gave

hope, inside and outside the country to Afghan women, girls, as well as those persecuted on the basis of gender identity or expression.

And hope in justice is important.

The ICC is a Hague-based court with the power to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Today, it explicitly recognises sexual slavery, enforced prostitution, forced pregnancy, enforced sterilisation and gender-based persecution as distinct crimes.

But the recognition of gender-based abuses as distinct crimes under international law is relatively recent. The ICC has been widely criticised for its slow and lengthy processes, with an abysmal rate of convictions.

In its 23-year history of operation, only 11 ICC cases have resulted in convictions. Just two of those, relating to crimes in Congo and Uganda, included successful convictions for sexual and gender-based crimes.

What would it take for more of these cases to result in successful prosecutions of gender-based crimes? What would be required to bring “gender-sensitive judging” into practice? And might it be possible to imagine a world where laws are written with a specific focus on benefiting women and people of diverse genders?

Fun fact a kike actor can pretend to be White and pretend to be Protestant or Roman Catholic or Atheist or whatever religion is required for the acting scene

He can then say whatever lines he wants claiming to represent that religion as a clergy person or a scientist even if he does not do science experiments nor have a science degree nor do math or statistiics or data analysis with science models or data and has not read the religious texts but simply made stuff up as being history

A lot of people just want some Superior Force to torture all the people who piss them off and they dress it up as a religion or political ideology, etc.

It'd be cool to be able to test individuals by giving them absolute power over their home country in some hyper realistic induced dream state for what will seem like a year to them and see how their faculties adapt to it. Then you wake them up and have a talk.

President Xi Jinping on Monday proposed the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), calling on countries to work in concert for a more just and equitable global governance system.

Xi highlighted five principles of the GGI -- adhering to sovereign equality, abiding by international rule of law, practicing multilateralism, advocating the people-centered approach, and focusing on taking real actions.

In the modern UK, removing rainbow flags from lampposts is treated by the police as a hate crime!

Hanging the Union Jack or the cross of St George on lampposts is said to be racist, but Pride flags are fine, and pulling them down from lampposts means that in this country, the police will launch an investigation.

Today I am carrying the Kabar Dozier in D2 steel.

It's a 3" hollow saber grind on a drop point blade in D2 steel. Lockback. Phosphor bronze bushings. Zytel scales. Closed length 4.25"

What takes this to the next level is it's only 2.4 oz.

This is a no nonsense knife and is very affordable. Highly recommended.

Alright niggers, I have now finished adding up the points! The poll results are here, but remember, the girls also went into the poll with different amounts of points from the Nomination Thread, while the Wild Cards went in with 0 points and that did indeed prove decisive in a number of cases:

strawpoll.com/poy9k2a4pgJ/resu…

Speaking of things that proved decisive, a reminder about the Franchise Cap, because it sure ended up playing a big role here: a single franchise can potentially have as many as 4 girls enter the tournament, should that many reps manage to qualify, while all other franchises will operate with a 3-girl cap. If multiple franchises exceed the 3 girl-limit, the one girl who gets in will simply be the one who netted the most points, no greater estimate of overall franchise strength will factor into it. Before the Qualifier Poll began, only Blue Archive and Zelda could potentially hit the 4-girl cap, so those two series were fighting for the chance to enter an extra rep.

Now, onto the rankings – and I gotta say, I underestimated just what a bloodbath this would be…

10) Reimu Hakurei (Touhou) – 41 votes + 0 points = 41 points

11) 2B (Nier: Automata) – 39 votes + 0 points = 39 points

12) Ashley "Leyley" Graves (The Coffin of Andy and Leyley) – 36 votes + 0 points = 36 points

13) Mikamo Neru (Blue Archive) - 28 votes + 5 points = 33 points

14) The Shupogakis/Train Twins (Blue Archive) - 28 votes + 3 points = 31 points

15) Tamamo (Monster Girl Quest) - 26 votes + 4 points = 30 points

16) Malon (Zelda: Ocarina of Time) - 28 votes + 0 points = 28 points

17) Tamamo no Mae (Fate/Extra) - 26 votes + 2 points = 28 points

18) Sorasaki Hina (Blue Archive) – 24 votes + 3 points = 27 points

19) Kosaka Wakamo (Blue Archive) – 24 votes + 3 points = 27 points (BLUE ARCHIVE WINS THE FRANCHISE CAP DUEL WITH ZELDA AND EARNS A 4TH TOURNAMENT REP)

20) Agnes Tachyon (Umamusume) 23 votes + 3 points = 26 points

21) Jill Valentine (Resident Evil) – 25 votes + 0 points = 25 points

22) Suzuran (Arknights) – 24 votes + 1 point = 25 points

XX) Igusa Haruka (Blue Archive) – 22 votes + 3 points = 25 points (ELIMINATED DUE TO THE FRANCHISE CAP)

23) Marin (Zelda: Link’s Awakening) – 21 votes + 4 points = 25 points

XX) Ichinose Asuna (Blue Archive) – 21 votes + 3 points = 24 points (ELIMINATED DUE TO THE FRANCHISE CAP)

25) Lana (Pokemon Sun/Moon) – 21 votes + 2 points = 23 points

26) Hoshimi Miyabi (Zenless Zone Zero) – 20 votes + 3 points = 23 points

27) Jeanne d'Arc (Alter)/Jalter (Fate Grand Order) – 20 votes + 2 points = 22 points

28) A2 (Nier: Automata) – 19 votes + 2 points = 21 points

XX) Shiromi Iori (Blue Archive) – 18 votes + 2 points = 20 points (ELIMINATED DUE TO THE FRANCHISE CAP)

XX) Riju (Legend of Zelda series) – 18 votes + 2 points = 20 points (ELIMINATED DUE TO THE FRANCHISE CAP)

29) Ganyu (Genshin Impact) – 17 votes + 3 points = 20 points

30) Bernadetta (Fire Emblem Three Houses) – 16 votes + 4 points = 20 points

31) Sora Kasugano (Yosuga no Sora) – 17 votes + 2 points = 19 points

32) Blanc (Hyperdimension Neptunia) – 17 votes + 2 points = 19 points

XX) Tharja (Fire Emblem Awakening) – 16 votes + 2 points = 18 points

XX) Emilie de Rochefort/Lili (Tekken) – 14 votes + 4 points = 18 points

XX) Mio (Xenoblade 3) – 14 votes + 4 points = 18 points

XX) Red Hood (Black Souls) – 15 votes + 2 points = 17 points

XX) New Jersey (Azur Lane) – 14 votes + 3 points = 17 points

XX) Vert (Hyperdimension Neptunia) – 14 votes + 3 points = 17 points

XX) Misono Mika (Blue Archive) – 14 votes + 3 points = 17 points

XX) Carrie Fernandez (Castlevania 64) – 14 votes + 2 points = 16 points

The girls with less than 14 votes didn’t even have a theoretical chance of reaching the necessary 19 points to force a Tiebreaker Poll.

And yeah, this means that Mio, Lili and Tharja were all just 1 vote away from forcing a Qualifier Poll together with Sora and Blanc....

I have a crazy idea that I can 3D print a D-sub connector. Specifically, the unobtainable 23-pin variety found on the Amiga. So I bought someone else’s DigiKey leftovers to give it a shot.

Surprisingly and helpfully, the printed engineering drawing was included. (Unhelpfully, it is in inches)

These are crimp contacts even though for the Spite Sprite they’ll be soldered directly to the board. TE actually does make push-in solder cup contacts, but they’re very hard to find these days.

in reply to Chip

I printed one with a series of increasing diameter holes. Turns out 2.3mm is a snug fit. The holes have a chamfer but it all got kind of squished during printing so I had to ream them out. I couldn’t find anything that specified the corner radius, so I guessed. It’s a bit too tight. Second version is printing now.

I definitely don’t have the precision to make these actually snap in, so I might just retain them with a bit of glue? I dunno. Maybe I’ll figure something out.

in reply to Chip

I've 3D printed my own design of NES controller sockets, so I've solved this problem before. The solution I found was to screw the printed part directly to the PCB either side of the pins. You could glue or melt it together.

I'd also suggest not worrying too much about getting the perfect clearance for the pins in the printed part - once you get within 0.25mm it so, the length of the channel you make for the pin will mean it has nowhere much to flex around.

This is referencing the rules change to F1/J1/L1 visas making them temporary by default. It's a limitation/restriction to current way things are done.

The White House has a "rapid response team" calling out "woke" art in Smithsonian museums.

wapo.st/45VqGJe [gift link]

After they took power, the Nazis infamously did almost exactly the same thing with what they called "degenerate" art, putting it on mocking display in Munich. (Naturally, it included works by some of Germany's greatest contemporary artists, because fascists have terrible taste and limited capacity for imagination).

Hitler’s hatred of “degenerate art” stemmed from his failed artistic career -he despised its form, not its message. China’s regime censors art for its content, silencing anything that challenges its ideology. Trump’s administration, however, targets art that merely appears “woke,” regardless of its actual meaning. This resembles a witch hunt: driven by superstition, ignorance, and fear, it seeks to punish what it doesn’t understand.

The largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in the United States
is calling on U.S. lawmakers to follow in the footsteps of Sens. Jeff Merkley and Chris Van Hollen,
who on Saturday shared a video about their unsuccessful attempts to visit — or even just fly over — the Gaza Strip during Israel’s ongoing assault.

“Sens. Van Hollen and Merkley have taken a bold and necessary step
by confronting the Israeli-manufactured and U.S.-backed humanitarian calamity in Gaza head-on,”
the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said in a statement late Saturday.
“Their mission must not stand alone.”
“Israel’s barring them entry to Gaza underscores the urgency of taking decisive steps to end its rampage of death, violence, and destruction,”
CAIR continued.
“Members of Congress must utilize every tool — diplomatic, legal, and legislative — to ensure that our nation’s values and laws demand an end to civilian suffering.
The crisis in Gaza is not abstract — it is a matter of life and death.
We call on our representatives to act urgently and courageously.”

I speak from experience that if you used the free preorder goodies (You started with more than just the single style) your saves won't be able to be transferred over but the game plays pretty quick to get back to Yokohama once you know what you're doing.

Having access to online characters is nice so you can pickpocket them for free silver and murder them for usually good tier loot for your level, not that loot is a problem.

Also even UNARMED is really good, even if it fucks you on stamina for not having blade flash. Because I did so much sandbox content I was overleveled for the story, I did pretty much all of Act 2 unarmed to max its stats until I hit the endgame plateau and my stats didn't quite dwarf everything else. You could probably do most of the game using it as a slight challenge run.
