I'm considering posting shiny photos of Roman churches each Advent Sunday. Additional posts will contain background info, but also juxtapose the clerical hypocricy, exploitation and discrimination those buildings represent once you look beyond the synaesthetic spectacle that is baroque catholicism. Those parts will of course be CWed. I'm still hesitant about this because I'm not Catholic, but got my PTSD from Evangelical Christianity.

@thomashelzle Commenting to "not take this stuff so seriously" is insensitive - especially when talking to/about survivors of spiritual abuse. That side note about my PTSD was not a joke. And that take on the decline of religion is a) very eurocentric, b) may be offensive to people who experience spirituality as an important part of their life and c) underestimates the impact (be it positive or harmful) organised religion still has in society - even among atheists. Okay, first up: Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. Erected around 400 AD over the supposed grave of Paul of Tarsus, it was the world’s largest church until current St. Peter was built. Despite of that this building has seen more days of neglect than of glory. Its roof collapsed several times, there are stories of pilgrims more or less camping in the nave, using cooking pots and putting up clotheslines. #christianity #rome #architecture #FotoMontag #PhotoMonday
The building has few origial parts left after it got: hit by lightning, an earthquake, was ransacked by Saracen pirates (it’s outside the city walls, thus poorly protected) and finally burnt down in the 19th century. Restoration went a bit free form and finished off everything that was left of the original. The triumphal arch paid for by Emperor Theodosius‘ daughter Galla Placidia in the 5th century and its mosaics are somewhat untouched, though. #christianity #rome #architecture
There is a row of friezes just above the columns featuring portraits of all Popes (those made before the 16th century are imaginary). But the space is limited. According to legend the Second Coming begins when the last portrait spot is filled. Well ... when John Paul II came into office there where only three spaces left. You think that St. Peter is Rome’s most important church ...being in the Vatican and all big and famous? Wrong. Constitutionally, the Vatican lies outside of Rome, therefore the Bishop of Rome (= The #Pope) has got to have a seat inside of the city. The #Lateran Palace serves this purpose – quite literally (see photo) - making the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran the official cathedral of Rome and the oldest in the Western World. #christianity #rome
Apropos #oldest: The basilica’s bronze doors are the oldest (functioning) doors in the world as they were originally part of Ceasar‘s Curia Iulia, a building that was finished in 29 BC. The original building was founded in 324 AD, but completely renovated during the 17th/18th century and looks nothing like the original. I personally lack interest in baroque architecture (Sorry, Mr Borromini) and mostly went there to salivate at the Cosmateque floors:
The #Cosmati were a 12th/13th century craftsman family specialising in #mosaic stone work. Many Roman churches are decorated with their inlays combining glass and marble in complex geometrical patterns – some almost fractal. They were inspired by Byzantine and (through Sicily) Islamic ornaments. The Lateran’s #cloister was wholly designed by Cosmati artists, each pillar is unique.

Apropos Egyptian. The largest standing Egyptian obelisk is right next to the Lateran. It was dug up from Circus Maximus by Sixtus V. in the 17th cent. All being part of his ongoing campaign to repurpose/desecrate ancient artifacts. He was also proficient in executing monks/nuns for breaking their vow of chastity and forbidding castrates to marry because of their infertility. Catholic church + tourism = pure weirdness, bit funny though
Imagine yourself nerding out in the cloister, shooting mosaics. Then stumbling across a *very* unique and clearly medieval metal door (11century). It's left ajar and you solemnly peek into the room ... to find a vending machine + coffee dispenser. Right inside the fucking cloister. Yeah, keeping people hydrated is good and prices were ok, but considering there was no seating available for older/impaired ppl *at all* this was surreal.
I decided to put the more controversial buildings on the backburner until after the holidays. So please enjoy the pearl that is Santa Prassede, a relatively unkown minor basilica featuring the most beautiful Carolingian mosaic work. San Zeno chapel was built by Pope Paschal I for his mother Theodora (see last image, depicted next to the saints Prassede & Prudentiana + Mary with a square halo to indicate she was still alive when the image was made). #Christianity #Saints

Welcome to a new year and another round of ecclesial architecture in Rome. Today: Santa Maria Maggiore. The following posts contain flippant comments about catholic veneration of relics. Personally I’m fascinated by the idea of objects being imbued by power, was humbled to learn from the Guaraní of Campo Grande. But considering how Catholicism has looked down on Indigenous practices while shaping its own tradition to become a main source of revenue I can’t hold back my cynicism on that.
Like most Roman churches, Santa Maria Maggiore got its heavy bling in modern times. The coffered ceiling is said to contain the first gold brought back by Columbus. The story is apocryphal, which doesn’t change the fact that gold mining and acquisition practices weren’t humane no matter the geographical origin. But certainly by not later than 1700, at least 2/3 of the gold used in Europe came robbed from South America.
The crypt under the high altar pictured above contains the most important relic of the church. Four boards of sycamore wood that are believed to be the manger of the Nativity. They are housed in a silver reliquary of questionable taste. It‘s also the burial place of Saint Jerome (the bible translator and lion-with-thorn-in-paw-guy)

Lacking a transept the church has two very impressive chapels framing the main altar. Since there was a prayer service in the Cappella Paolina, I can only present pictures from the Sistine Chapel (not to be confused with the one in the Vatican), commissioned by Sixtus V, one of the most ruthless and morally conservative people to ever hold the office. Addendum for Santa Maria Maggiore, since it's February: The Baptistery houses the memorial of António Manuel ne Vunda. He was sent to the Vatican as the ambassador of Congo, but died just a few days after reaching the city in 1608. He received a memorial equal to European diplomats.
