My mother in law, now 98, was a Jewish child immigrant from Germany in 1938 or 39 (not actually on the KinderTransport). Her parents also later managed to escape to Britain before war broke out, but were interned on the Isle of Man as enemy aliens for the duration. Most of the rest of their relations died in the #Holocaust.
The British government knew about the condition of Jews in Germany in 1939. Yet it was extremely difficult for German Jews to qualify for asylum in the UK. Of course, the systematic murder of Jews did not really get under way until after the outbreak of war, but systematic persecution was already well established. It did not become easier for European Jews to obtain asylum in the UK after the systematic killing had started.
Similarly, the UK government has known about the systematic persecution of #Palestinians in #Gaza for DECADES, yet it has been hard for Palestinians to obtain refugee status in the UK. Since the beginning of the #GazaGenocide campaign in October 2023, it has become virtually impossible.
indeed. My grandparents were refused visas and subsequent perished in the holocaust. My father survived. He died in his 90s, but lost his parents, older sister, younger brother, grandparents and other relatives.
The only difference is, eighty years ago, British factories were building the weapons which were being used to fight those committing the #Holocaust (even if stopping the Holocaust was not in itself a war aim).
