Pretty astoundingly repugnant of Israel to call the Madleen of the Freedom Flotilla "selfie yacht" after they illegally boarded it and abducted the crew.
What they WERE doing was literally knowingly risking their lives for humanity, as Israel against a previous, much larger, humanitarian aid convoy of the same Freedom Flotilla murdered 10 of those participants when they illegally boarded that convoy in international waters, out of which one according to a witness with a headshot. Also, this iteration of the Freedom Flotilla was airstrike-bombed outside Malta, extremely "probably" by Israel, so they have a different, smaller boat as the previous ship as a result of the bombing got a hole in the hull. As civilians the only protection they had and have against being murdered too is that they are well and widely known, that "the whole world is watching" as the slogan goes, so they could not just be silently assassinated. This also fills the purpose of enabling democracy to properly function against war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, by highlighting current grave injustice. To inform others when something is wrong is foundational to any democracy, which is probably also why the current authoritarian far-right regime of Israel despises it.

It was also Turkey who blocked this now boarded iteration of Freedom Flotilla from leaving port for months, obstructing their continuing on to Gaza.
Erdoğan doesn't care about the Freedom Flotilla, Gaza or anything else than about Erdoğan, now using this crime for personal political profit too.
The response to Greta Thunberg being illegally abducted by Israel, people calling the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Sweden to pressure them to actually do their jobs this time, has now been commented by the MFA being outraged that "A campaign has started where one calls the MFA to a large extent and thus blocks calls for others who ae in urgent need of consular aid" (my translation)... blaming the people worried and upset about this repeat violation against another citizen of Sweden for the MFA's own failure to properly staff their lines, address the concerns in an appropriate and proactive manner and most of all to take open and clear action to fulfill their jobs.
It's not the public's job to create some queue-system deciding whose turn it is to get the great honor of calling the Ministry. It's the Ministry's job to... do their jobs.
Regarding the illegal abduction of Greta, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sweden declared that it was the intl laws compliant human rights defenders' "clear own responsibility" when Israel again violated international law by illegally boarding and illegally abducting people outside its jurisdiction. According to major newspapers in Sweden the heroes of humanity are going to be taken to a court for "illegal immigrants" in Ramla (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramla). Adalah (adalah.org/en) which reportedly represents them said they should be put before the court on Tuesday morning, although the article interviewing the lawyer, Nasrin Shehade Zoabi, also says they still have not been allowed contact with their clients. The lawyer very correctly notes that" the detained aren't at all illegal immigrants, they were on their way to Gaza, not to Israel. The military forced them to Israel against their will".
Israel's Minister of War, Katz, has said they will force the human rights activists to watch a 43 minute video of Hamas' attacks on October 7, 2023, once again clearly demonstrating that the Minister is just a lousy racist doing collective penalism for actions based on ethnicity instead of actual participation in the acts (or even being alive yet then) as to people with functioning moral compass no atrocity by someone against another can ever legitimize another atrocity against someone else and that's also not how the jus ad bellum nor jus in bello work, at all.

Greta Thunberg has stated that the reason for accepting the deportation uncontested was that will enable doing more, more effectively while no longer detained by Israel, so that's in line with this group statement.

Eight from the 'Madleen' remain illegally detained by Israel after being abducted in international waters while attempting to deliver aid to Gaza.
Today, they were brought before a detention tribunal at Ramleh. Israel continues to falsely claim they “illegally entered”—despite taking them at sea and transferring them into Israeli territory against their will.
The state has imposed 100-year entry bans on all of those aboard the 'Madleen'. Thiago Ávila has been on hunger and water strike since early yesterday. Others report unsanitary conditions, including bed bug infestations and no access to safe drinking water.
The seizure, detention, and attempted deportation of the our team are clear violations of international law and Israeli law. They must be released immediately and unconditionally. We will not be silent. The blockade is illegal. Our mission remains: to break the siege and deliver aid to Gaza.

Appearing to accuse Israel of "killing babies as a hobby" ("הרג תינוקות כתחביב") and conducting warfare against civilians, Israeli opposition leader and Democrats party chairman Yair Golan has warned that Israel risks becoming "an outcast nation among nations" similar to apartheid-era South Africa if it doesn't change course.
In his statement, Golan emphasized that a "sane country does not conduct warfare against civilians" and criticized the current approach to the Gaza conflict.
The former IDF general differentiated between Israel's military personnel and political leadership, praising soldiers as "heroic" while characterizing government ministers as pursuing dangerous policies. Golan called for Israel to reaffirm its identity as a "Zionist, Jewish and democratic state" while advocating for an end to the fighting, the return of hostages, and the beginning of rehabilitation efforts.
Ironically, #Ynet is reporting that among the critics was also #Herzog, who'll forever be remembered for autographing a bomb to be dropped on Gaza and doing exactly what Golan warns against, claiming that Golan's words are a "serious and false defamation of IDF soldiers."
Considering Golan’s straightforward and honest statement, facts of which are already widely known, both within and outside of Israel, even if some publicly deny it, the issue is not the fact of bombing innocent civilians. Israel hides behind the lie of “collateral damage,” while in fact, international humanitarian law imposes a strict framework on occupying powers to prioritize civilian protection, balancing security needs with humanitarian imperatives. #Israel’s obligations include ensuring the well-being of Palestinians, preventing violence against them, and refraining from policies that undermine their rights. Israel doesn’t engage in such actions. In fact, it goes beyond that. It targets civilian populations in occupied territories it intends to retain, thereby further violating international laws of war.
Quoting Rogel Alpher on Israel’s mainstream zero tolerance for having their status as ultimate victims challenged:

Today I found out that on this platform, "block" is just a fancy word for "filter". Just had an individual user go through my entire profile and downvote everything. So I blocked them, thinking that this would make me safe from any future stalking. But I was just informed that no, any user that you 'block' is actually still able to see everything that you post and vote freely.
All that 'blocking' actually does is hide the person from you. But they're still free to stalk and do as they please. I just tested this out for myself using my other account and sure enough, it's true.
I just want to know, how is this acceptable? I bet you that if I called out this user publically, I would probably end up in hot water myself for harassment or something. And yet 'blocking' is completely fkn useless too. So what recourse does a user actually have here when faced with a hostile user that wants to ruin their experience on Lemmy?
Coming from Blåhaj, I thought I would try 'moderating' my own experience for a bit. But you can't 'moderate' your own experience if the tools to do so are fkn useless and only trick you into thinking that something has been achieved, without actually doing anything useful.
And now I'm starting to see a new value in instances like Blåhaj. Because you actually need admins that give a shit around here or else you're just left to the wolves on a platform that seems more interested in protecting abusive users than allowing users to protect themselves.
Edit: watching you all upvote the person talking shit about how this works on other platforms while downvoting the actual correct information that comes with a source has certainly taught me a thing or two about this platform and the people on it. You all actually prefer misinformation to fact as long as it suits your vibe or opinion more. Like a bunch of fkn MAGAs. I really wish there was a way to disable notifications for this post (another feature missing here) because watching you people upvote misinformation is enough to make me no longer give a flying fuck what anyone here says or thinks.
I want to know when and why younger people seem to think that blocking inherently works both ways. It's almost never worked like that. If you block someone, you are hiding them from your sight; not hiding yourself from theirs. This is the most common way blocking works.
Can you give examples of platforms where it works like this? I know that blocking someone on Facebook blocks them from being able to see you. Pretty Twitter is or was the same before Musk. And I just looked it up, blocking a user on Reddit does in fact block them from seeing you. I'm pretty sure it's always worked this way on smaller platforms I've used too.
So I'm curious to know, which platforms have you always used that have apparently always worked this way?
Literally every forum, chatroom, and social media site outside of TikTok, and I think Imgur, works the same way it does here. Including Facebook and Reddit. The only thing Reddit does special in this, is that blocked users engagement doesn't appear to you either. So if you block user ABC, they will still see your posts, but if they vote on it, you won't see that vote.
Not much of an example these days, but pre-mainstream social media (forums, chat) block was always hide on your end.
To be honest I never blocked back in the old days (the mods would take care of outright spam and users being disruptive).
For me, the new method seems counterproductive. Hiding your post/messages that can still be accessed via another container and/or account just seems strange to me.
So, 20 years ago before Facebook? I know for a fact that blocking has always worked properly on Facebook, I had a very toxic 'friendship' there another lifetime ago where we were blocking and unblocking each other every 5 minutes. But it's funny how everyone here keeps upvoting the incorrect information and ignoring the correct information about this. Not funny haha but funny peculiar. If Facebook only filtered out people instead of blocking them properly, it would be a disaster as far as stalking goes. And I think that everyone knows it because normally people on this platform seem quite rational. Except for when there's any criticism of the Fediverse, that is.
I agree with you that all mainstream platforms (FB, Twitter, Reddit - this just the ones I have experience with) work like that.
Believe it or not, but there still exist modern forums with large user bases (stable or growing), so it's not like it's an archaic model.
It's fair to criticise Lemmy for using this approach. I genuinely see where you are coming from. But if we approach Lemmy as an evolution of old style forums, then the "hide" approach makes more sense.
With admins, mods (not relevant for default UI?) actively dealing with mass downvotes, stalker-like behaviour and so on.
Part of the adoption of the dual-side block method is because large corps want automation and don't really care about quality (all about engagement).
I think the utility of blocking people on a public platform is kind of fake anyway. If someone is harassing you, and you block them, it's obvious that you did it so they'll just log out and suddenly they can see your posts again. Accounts are trivial to make on the fediverse too so they can always just spin up a new one to harass you.
I think silent filtering is better for that reason because they can't tell that you did it so they won't just immediately switch to a new account and keep going.
Active blocking like you're talking about only makes sense if there's such a thing as "follower-only" posts imo. Otherwise it's a false sense of security because they can see everything anyway just by logging out or switching to another account.

“We are a politically and militarily occupied people. Chile is a country of a profoundly racist and colonial nature. Currently we live oppression in all dimensions. The current government is the worst government that we have had to live through since the military dictatorship. We graph it as follows: this May 18 marks 3 uninterrupted years of the State of Exception, which specifically means tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, drones and numerous military and police personnel for the unrestricted defense of the tasks and interests of the economic groups that devastate the Wallmapu with their extractivist policies.
With militarization and repression, the policy of the stick is imposed very strongly against the Mapuche cause, and the carrot policy is being relegated to the background and is only trying to co-opt some Mapuche sectors, subjugating them to develop new processes of capitalist investment. These are economic policies that are subject to the rearrangement of big capital, as we have already denounced.
Instead of peace and understanding, this government will leave a legacy that will be the permanent establishment of militarization in the Wallmapu. This has resulted in the allocation of many resources for the police and the armed forces, installing a true state of military occupation never seen before. And, without a doubt, repression and persecution of expressions of resistance will continue.
For this reason, we reaffirm once again that with this government the Mapuche people will not achieve any progress through legal and institutional means, and that is why it is more strongly sustained to maintain the resistance against capitalism that attacks the historic Wallmapu.
