UK suspends free trade talks with Israel and announces sanctions over West Bank settlers

cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/34958452

The U.K. suspended free trade talks with Israel on Tuesday and hit West Bank settlers with sanctions, less than a day after vowing “concrete actions” if Israel didn’t stop its new military offensive in Gaza.

This is a factually erroneous title, let's get around this story more critically and precisely:
Yair Golan is not opposition leader, he is leader of the center-left Democrats, which is a merging of the Labor together with the Meretz party - this is the essential remains of what is considered the "Zionist left".
Now, the actual opposition leader, Yair Lapid, he leads the centrist Yesh Atid party.
Lapid has condemned Golan for his statements, calling them a "gift to our enemies" and calling Golan's party a "radical left" party.
Of course, the Democrats are no such thing. And neither is Golan. Golan has made multiple outright genocidal statements within the past two years. In February he expressed hope that 7 million Palestinuans would "completely disappear", and in October 2023 he advocated for denying Gazans humanitarian aid altogether and starving them, as a "totally legitimate" thing. See both and more here:
https://x.com/ireallyhateyou/status/1889434552784826666

So it's much worse. Golan is trying to wash his bloody hands, and it's clear that liberals internationally are trying to cling to Golan's warnings as if they are a sign of hope in the "good Israel". But that hope is misplaced.
And finally, to Golan's much discussed comments:
"A sane country does not fight against civilians, does not kill babies as a hobby, and does not give itself the aim of expelling populations... Israel is on the way to becoming a pariah state, like South Africa was, if we don’t return to acting like a sane country,”
So, fighting against civilians was always Israel's way. It did not expel over a million Palestinians (1948 and 1967 alone) because they were combatants, but precisely because they were civilian residents. Ethnic cleansing has always been Israel's way. And if that's insanity, then there is nothing to "return to".

He points out numerous connections and parallels to so-called pandemics of antiquity and current events, i.e. the “Corona pandemic”. The criers of these “pandemics” have always used the same methods earlier and to this day: the creation of fear and panic.

So here’s a really useful tip if you’re using archive.org to look up a site and it redirects to some other site because that’s what they saw at a later crawl…

Prefix your search (in the URL bar) with:

web.archive.org/web/*/

So, for example, if you search for blendwebmix.com/ on archive.org, you’ll get a redirect to a different site.

But if you enter the following URL in your browser:

web.archive.org/web/*/blendweb…

You’ll get the calendar view with all the crawls of the URL.

Thanks to iarchivist for the tip (archive.org/post/1012493/wayba…).

@xianc78 it's RPG In A Box, a game engine built with godot. it's like a more advanced RPG Maker with 3D as its main focus and node-based scripting (you can directly edit the scripts as well).

i was trying out RPG Architect before, as it is a lot closer to RPG Maker and still supports 3D and is actually a really great piece of software too, but RPG In A Box just sort of spoke to me more. We'll see how it ends up!

I heard this today on CBC - the reason for the stop and search is to see if they have electronic vehicle theft tools in the car.

Now, this is a strange way to solve the car theft problem when the manufacturers seem incapable of designing a system that has a reduced attack surface.

The push should be towards legislation that mandates cybersecurity into vehicle electronics - yes it's hard, but it's not impossible.

It's only a matter of time before on-the road hacks can stop your car

@rhempel bunch o' dummies.
i mean seriously, there *are* a lot of gadgets geared towards hacking vehicles for people who couldn't do so otherwise. like the physical analog to kiddie scripting. but as was mentioned, the onus should be on the manufacturers to get their shit together.

Israeli Airstrike Hits Generators at Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, Ignites Fire tn.ai/3317093

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said Israel needed to prevent a famine in Gaza for "diplomatic reasons", after his government announced it would allow limited food aid into the territory.

"We must not let the population (of Gaza) sink into famine, both for practical and diplomatic reasons," Netanyahu said in a video posted to his Telegram channel, adding that even friends of Israel would not tolerate "images of mass starvation."

Wellll, also their blockading of humanitarian relief is a violation of intl law.
Rule 55. The parties to the conflict must allow and facilitate rapid and unimpeded passage of humanitarian relief for civilians in need, which is impartial in character and conducted without any adverse distinction, subject to their right of control.

Rule 53. The use of starvation of the civilian population as a method of warfare is prohibited.

Et cetera.

Not that Netanyahu and gang seems to care about war crimes or be held accountable for them, but rather frequently publicly brag about having committed such.

As the next convoy to break Israel's illegal siege against the people in the Gaza Strip of Palestine approaches, this time by land, Israel urges its lapdog military coup dictator al-Sisi of Egypt to keep Egypt's part in the war crime blockade, as without Egypt's direct complicity at the Gaza/Egypt direct border, there would be no siege of Gaza.
lbcgroup.tv/news/middleeastnew…

The atrocious al-Sisi regime would not be initially able to stand against the oppressed people if it was not for USA's military and economic "aid" which is received on condition of aiding Israel against Palestine (as agreed in the Camp David Accords of 1978 when Sadat was the second regional leader to sell out Palestine, only after Turkey was the first).
That was why USA chose to ignore the rule that it is officially no allowed to give aid to coup regimes, but after a pretty long public debate where that was the key point, it was... just done anyway, to as Israel wants it keep the people in Gaza starving and dependent on Hamas.

Imagine how many lives were shattered because someone was told they were suffering a “chemical imbalance.”

It’s shameful. It’s time for other alternatives to treat depression to come forward. Yes, that includes psychedelics.

And it turns out, the CDC admits that they and the doctors and the pharmaceutical companies knew this 25 years ago... But continued to prescribe them because they are a big profit item.

This article came out two years ago and they are still prescribing these drugs.

1. Asks you to respond emotionally rather than intellectually.
2. Strips the event of context, such as the contemporary factual setting, geopolitical reality, or historical awareness.
3. Demands a rush to judgment before a diligent, independent inquiry occurs.

5. The only explicable motive offered for the offending action is irrational evil or utterly stupid immorality, as it is against the rational interest of the offender to commit the act for the reasons alleged.

19 MAYIS NEYİN TARİHİ?

Elias Nin

Mustafa Kemal, Padişaha rağmen Samsun’a gitmez. Mustafa Kemal ve yanındaki İttihatçı kadrolar Padişah Vahdettin’in emriyle Damat Ferit Paşa tarafından Samsun’a gönderilirler. İttihatçı kadroları Samsun’a götüren gemi İngilizlerin izniyle İstanbul Boğazı’ndan geçerek Karadeniz’e ulaşmıştır.

#Palestine / Israeli Politician Golan: Israel "Kills Babies as a Hobby" in Gaza

Appearing to accuse Israel of "killing babies as a hobby" ("הרג תינוקות כתחביב") and conducting warfare against civilians, Israeli opposition leader and Democrats party chairman Yair Golan has warned that Israel risks becoming "an outcast nation among nations" similar to apartheid-era South Africa if it doesn't change course.

In his statement, Golan emphasized that a "sane country does not conduct warfare against civilians" and criticized the current approach to the Gaza conflict.

The former IDF general differentiated between Israel's military personnel and political leadership, praising soldiers as "heroic" while characterizing government ministers as pursuing dangerous policies. Golan called for Israel to reaffirm its identity as a "Zionist, Jewish and democratic state" while advocating for an end to the fighting, the return of hostages, and the beginning of rehabilitation efforts.

Ironically, #Ynet is reporting that among the critics was also #Herzog, who'll forever be remembered for autographing a bomb to be dropped on Gaza and doing exactly what Golan warns against, claiming that Golan's words are a "serious and false defamation of IDF soldiers."

Quoting Rogel Alpher on Israel’s mainstream zero tolerance for having their status as ultimate victims challenged:

[...] Golan is the first to present a third option: condemning Israel as an immoral state that has gone off the rails and is committing crimes against humanity. This effectively makes him the only opposition leader in Israel. Surrounded by zeroes like Lapid, Lieberman, Gantz, and also Eisenkot, whose moral voice on the matter of killing Gazans is not heard. Golan told Israelis: "You are not moral," and most Israelis cannot stand it. It drives them crazy. They must be the most victimized, the most righteous, the most moral. Always. And they curse his big mouth. But it's not the mouth. It's the conscience.

Hebrew haaretz.co.il/gallery/televisi… or archive.is/bwtpt

Alpher mentions how in the mainstream discourse the only acceptable reason for opposing the killing of babies in Gaza is based on potential damage to image and public relations abroad, not on moral grounds. Golan is the first Jewish and Zionist party leader to present a third option: condemning Israel as immoral and committing crimes against humanity. Golan's act is seen as changing the rules of the game and effectively making him the sole opposition leader by challenging the Israeli public's need to perceive themselves as the ultimate victims, just, and moral.

Alpher's analysis brings to mind the fact that most Israelis voluntarily act as spokespeople for a poison machine designed to spread disinformation and draw attention away from Israel's crimes since 1948. If you've ever encountered an Israeli, chances are you met one of them. These individuals are the ones who will attempt to persuade you that they are more akin to yourself: civilized, European, and the real victims. A flyer distributed to journalists during Golan’s meeting with the Israeli press documents statements made by Israeli political figures regarding Gaza.

Bezalel Smotrich: "There is no such thing as Gaza civilians. Rafah, Deir al-Balah, Nuseirat - annihilation is absolute."

Galit Distel-Atbaryan: "Gaza needs to be erased now."

Itamar Ben-Gvir: "To destroy, to kill, to eliminate, to crush, to demolish, to burn, to starve, to cause suffering, to destroy, to crush, to exterminate!"

Moshe Feiglin: "Every child, every baby in Gaza is the enemy... so that not a single child's remains in Gaza.“

Yaakov Bardugo: "To bomb without discriminating, without distinguishing between those who are involved and those who are not involved."

The minute you challenge a Redditor worldview about anything, there comes the downvotes

In this episode, Xbox is talking about "integrating Steam" somehow, whether it's walled gardened or not, it's pretty much just a fucking PC at that point

This is where we find brainlet Redditors that would give Microsoft fat stack of cash for what they can already do on PC, on the TV, with a controller on Steam Big Picture, One Game Launcher, custom OSes made for just that, etc. because it's too hard somehow, but PC games on Xbox without using a pesky wireless mouse to access possibly and probably walled gardened? Stalin: We know that a Right opposition often masquerades in a "Left" toga in order to mislead the working class. wordsmith.social/protestation/…

Quotes

  • Otto Kuusinen: As long as the working class wages only an economic struggle, the bourgeoisie does not see in that any great danger for itself; but when the working class organises politically, i.e., creates a political party which expresses its will as a class, the bourgeoisie begins seriously to fear for its rule. That is why reaction deals its main blows against the political party of the working class. At the same time, trying to undermine the party from within, capitalist propaganda endeavours to persuade the workers that they can do without their own party. One of the manifestations of bourgeois influence on the working class is the anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist denial of the leading role of a political party.
  • Democritus: Not from fear but from a sense of duty refrain from your sins.
  • Democritus: Many who have not learned wisdom live wisely, and many who do the basest deeds can make most learned speeches.
  • Democritus: Fools learn wisdom through misfortune.
  • Democritus: Strength of body is nobility in beasts of burden, strength of character is nobility in men.
  • Democritus: Neither art nor wisdom may be attained without learning.
  • Democritus: It is better to correct your own faults than those of another.
  • Democritus: Good means not (merely) not to do wrong, but rather not to desire to do wrong.
  • Democritus: Fame and wealth without wisdom are unsafe possessions.
  • Muammar Gaddafi: We will not surrender. We will defeat them by any means. We are ready for the fight, whether it will be a short or a long one. We will be victorious in the end. This assault is by a bunch of fascists who will end up in the dustbin of history.
  • Democritus: By convention sweet is sweet, bitter is bitter, hot is hot, cold is cold, color is color; but in truth there are only atoms and the void.
  • Democritus: We know nothing accurately in reality, but (only) as it changes according to the bodily condition, and the constitution of those things that flow upon (the body) and impinge upon it.
  • Democritus: Medicine heals diseases of the body, wisdom frees the soul from passions.
  • Democritus: Immoderate desire is the mark of a child, not a man.
  • Democritus: Men have fashioned an image of Chance as an excuse for their own stupidity.
  • Democritus: In a shared fish, there are no bones.
  • Democritus: Education is an ornament for the prosperous, a refuge for the unfortunate.

  • Democritus: Moderation multiplies pleasures, and increases pleasure.
  • Democritus: If your desires are not great, a little will seem much to you; for small appetite makes poverty equivalent to wealth.
  • Democritus: No power and no treasure can outweigh the extension of our knowledge.
  • Democritus: In fact we do not know anything infallibly, but only that which changes according to the condition of our body and of the (influences) that reach and impinge upon it.
  • Democritus: Of practical wisdom these are the three fruits: to deliberate well, to speak to the point, to do what is right.
  • Democritus: 'Tis not in strength of body nor in gold that men find happiness, but in uprightness and in fulness of understanding.
  • Democritus: He who does wrong is more unhappy than he who suffers wrong.
  • Samuel P. Huntington: The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion (to which few members of other civilizations were converted) but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.
  • Marjori Palmer: One of the most morale-damaging aspects of the inflation was the "sack of Germany" that occurred at the height of the (1923) inflation. Anyone who possessed dollars or sterling was king in Germany. A few American dollars would allow a man to live like a millionaire. Foreigners swarmed into the country, buying up family treasures, estates, jewelry and art works at unbelievable low prices.
  • Lionel Robbins: It was the most colossal thing of its kind in history: and next probably to the Great War itself, it must bear responsibility for many of the political and economic difficulties of our generation. It destroyed the wealth of the more solid elements of German society: and left behind a moral and economic disequilibrium, a breeding ground for the disasters which have followed. Hitler is the foster child of the inflation.
  • Lenin: There is no trace of utopianism in Marx, in the sense that he made up or invented a 'new' society. No, he studied the birth of the new society out of the old, and the forms of transition from the latter to the former, as a natural-historical process. He examined the actual experience of a proletarian mass movement and tried to draw practical lessons from it.
  • Che Guevara: Many will call me an adventurer - and that I am, only one of a different sort: one of those who risks his skin to prove his platitudes.
  • Democritus: The first principles of the universe are atoms and empty space; everything else is merely thought to exist.
  • Bertolt Brecht: Lenin is enshrined In the large heart of the working class.

TIL blocking users on Lemmy is nothing but a placebo

Today I found out that on this platform, "block" is just a fancy word for "filter". Just had an individual user go through my entire profile and downvote everything. So I blocked them, thinking that this would make me safe from any future stalking. But I was just informed that no, any user that you 'block' is actually still able to see everything that you post and vote freely.

All that 'blocking' actually does is hide the person from you. But they're still free to stalk and do as they please. I just tested this out for myself using my other account and sure enough, it's true.

I just want to know, how is this acceptable? I bet you that if I called out this user publically, I would probably end up in hot water myself for harassment or something. And yet 'blocking' is completely fkn useless too. So what recourse does a user actually have here when faced with a hostile user that wants to ruin their experience on Lemmy?

Coming from Blåhaj, I thought I would try 'moderating' my own experience for a bit. But you can't 'moderate' your own experience if the tools to do so are fkn useless and only trick you into thinking that something has been achieved, without actually doing anything useful.

And now I'm starting to see a new value in instances like Blåhaj. Because you actually need admins that give a shit around here or else you're just left to the wolves on a platform that seems more interested in protecting abusive users than allowing users to protect themselves.

Edit: watching you all upvote the person talking shit about how this works on other platforms while downvoting the actual correct information that comes with a source has certainly taught me a thing or two about this platform and the people on it. You all actually prefer misinformation to fact as long as it suits your vibe or opinion more. Like a bunch of fkn MAGAs. I really wish there was a way to disable notifications for this post (another feature missing here) because watching you people upvote misinformation is enough to make me no longer give a flying fuck what anyone here says or thinks.

I think the utility of blocking people on a public platform is kind of fake anyway. If someone is harassing you, and you block them, it's obvious that you did it so they'll just log out and suddenly they can see your posts again. Accounts are trivial to make on the fediverse too so they can always just spin up a new one to harass you.

I think silent filtering is better for that reason because they can't tell that you did it so they won't just immediately switch to a new account and keep going.

Active blocking like you're talking about only makes sense if there's such a thing as "follower-only" posts imo. Otherwise it's a false sense of security because they can see everything anyway just by logging out or switching to another account.

Héctor Llaitul: The Legacy of This Government Will Be the Permanent Militarization of the Wallmapu

By: Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca

“We are a politically and militarily occupied people. Chile is a country of a profoundly racist and colonial nature. Currently we live oppression in all dimensions. The current government is the worst government that we have had to live through since the military dictatorship. We graph it as follows: this May 18 marks 3 uninterrupted years of the State of Exception, which specifically means tanks, armored vehicles, helicopters, drones and numerous military and police personnel for the unrestricted defense of the tasks and interests of the economic groups that devastate the Wallmapu with their extractivist policies.

With militarization and repression, the policy of the stick is imposed very strongly against the Mapuche cause, and the carrot policy is being relegated to the background and is only trying to co-opt some Mapuche sectors, subjugating them to develop new processes of capitalist investment. These are economic policies that are subject to the rearrangement of big capital, as we have already denounced.

Instead of peace and understanding, this government will leave a legacy that will be the permanent establishment of militarization in the Wallmapu. This has resulted in the allocation of many resources for the police and the armed forces, installing a true state of military occupation never seen before. And, without a doubt, repression and persecution of expressions of resistance will continue.

For this reason, we reaffirm once again that with this government the Mapuche people will not achieve any progress through legal and institutional means, and that is why it is more strongly sustained to maintain the resistance against capitalism that attacks the historic Wallmapu.

For territory and autonomy for the Mapuche Nation !!

Héctor Llaitul Carrillanca”.
