It shows up in tons of ways, from vapid social media influencers peddling poorly-made vanity products with no real intrinsic value, to the neverending reign of reality TV's paint-by-numbers programming, to the cynical "brainrot" content trends we see now, to everyone desperately trying to pretend #AI in its current state is anything but a bell curve simulator, to cynical politicians virtue signaling about every issue while doing everything they can to avoid anything resembling legislation or governance (i.e. their job).
In every way, the rich prefer a world in which we're distracted and disarmed while they can enrich themselves by merely existing without straining or challenging themselves in any way. It's the societal equivalent of parents handing kids an iPad so they don't have to deal with them vs. actually parenting. Name any of the #billionaires who obsessively focus on our collective substance and incremental improvement vs. jazz hands PR stunts and corporate pablum while paying lip service about shareholder value. You can't, they don't exist. Every single one of them is trying to give you, the baby, an iPad to play with, so you'll leave them the fuck alone. Better yet, if you die or disappear, they can just keep the iPad for themselves and not have to deal with you at all! Wonder why they're bankrolling tax cuts that destroy much of what makes existing in this country possible and worthwhile?
We are in a class war, not a culture war. Our politics are a symptom of what Ed lays out here, not the cause. The sooner we all realize that and band together, the better off we'll all be.

One of the heroes of the Intelligence Branch of the Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, he was martyred on the road to Al-Quds and Palestine, treacherously and directly targeted by the occupationโs warplanes during the battles to defend and confront our people in the midst of the epic of October 7th in the โBashit Campโ in the city of Rafah, a city of steadfastness and defiance. In addition to reason in public, there is also an area of absolute privacy. This is the realm of family, friends, or one's own self. In ancient times, this was called the oikos, the household. As long as this area does not touch the public sphere, i.e., does not break any generally applicable laws, everything is permitted there and is negotiated within the oikos itself. It is not without reason that #sexuality and other things that would cause โpublic nuisanceโ are located there.
But what happens in a digital society where these centuries-old boundaries between these areas have dissolved practically overnight? This dissolution is happening, on the one hand, through permanent self-publication in real time on so-called โsocial media.โ And on the other hand, and much more seriously, through the technically feasible and actually occurring #total surveillance and recording of all events taking place in the digital space.
Since we live in a completely digitalized world, all areas of life are also reflected there. It does not matter whether it is the private sphere of the oikos or the public consideration of a social problem. If everything becomes public and, as everyone knows today, permanently recorded, this means the complete abolition of privacy, of the private sphere, of the oikos.
This is disastrous.
