In case you missed it, LXQt and Xfce both support Wayland now

Both don't ship with their own Wayland compositor, but there are enough to choose from.

Xfce comes with a wayland session using labwc out of the box, but was also tested with Wayfire. The devs state you shouldn't hold your breath waiting for the native window manager xfwm to be ported into a Wayland compositor, since they don't know if/when it will be done. Almost all other Xfce components support Wayland now, while retaining X11 compatibility.

LXQt's newest stable release has full Wayland support, with 7 different Wayland compositors to choose from within a GUI settings menu: Labwc, KWin, Wayfire, Hyprland, Sway, River and Niri

Welp, I just apt purge'd damn near everything except the kernel. How's your Friday going?

I hear this is a rite of passage. I made it 4 weeks before I rekt all my shit (it was nvidia related). Where do I claim my sticker?

In all seriousness, now that I understand better these commands that I've been haphazardly throwing around, Id like to do a clean install. God knows what else Ive done to it. Can i just reinstall to my root partition and have my home partition work as expected?

Can we please, PLEASE for gods sake just all agree that arch is not and will never be a good beginner distro no matter how many times you fork it?

Arch is aimed at people who know their shit so they can build their own distro based on how they imagine their distro to be. It is not a good distro for beginners and non power users, no matter how often you try to make your own repository, and how many GUI installers you make for it. There's a good reason why there is no GUI installer in arch (aside from being able to load it into ram). That being that to use Arch, you need to have a basic understanding of the terminal. It is in no way hard to boot arch and type in archinstall. However, if you don't even know how to do that, your experience in whatever distro, no matter how arch based it is or not, will only last until you have a dependency error or some utter and total Arch bullshit® happens on your system and you have to run to the forums because you don't understand how a wiki works.

You want a bleeding edge distro? Use goddamn Opensuse Tumbleweed for all I care, it is on par with arch, and it has none of the arch stuff.

You have this one package that is only available on arch repos? Use goddamn flatpak and stop crying about flatpak being bloated, you probably don't even know what bloat means if you can't set up arch. And no, it dosent run worse. Those 0,0001 seconds don't matter.

You really want arch so you can be cool? Read the goddamn 50 page install guide and set it up, then we'll talk about those arch forks.

(Also, most arch forks that don't use arch repos break the aur, so you don't even have the one thing you want from arch)

"SO proof" distro

Any recommendations for a linux distro that i can set up and be reasonably sure my non techy SO won't break accidentally? The set up doesn't have to be easy it just has to not break once I leave her alone with it. My first thought was popOS.

My plan is to have 2 profiles and not give her access to sudo. I just don't want to have to go into it unless she needs a new program.

Fedora is a bit too eager to deliver new updates IMO, especially KDE. As much as I love KDE, their .0 releases have had serious bugs several times in a row now. It's always better to wait for .1 patch with Plasma. It may be hard for the user to break Kinoite, but it won't save them from bugs.

Fedora's mission have always been to push new stuff when it's "mostly ready" at the cost of inconveniencing of some users, so I wouldn't recommend it for non-tech-savvy people.

I know people say that it's 100% stable for them (as they do for Arch, Tumbleweed, Debian Sid, etc) but that's survirorship bias. As any bleeding edge distro, Fedora has its periods of stability that are broken by tumultuous transitions to the new and shiny tech (like it was with Pipewire, Wayland default, major DE upgrades, etc). During these times some people's setup will break and you don't know ahead of time if it will be yours.

Security:
By default, more secure than Windows.
Fewer viruses.
Regular security updates.

Oh yeah, I forgot about our gamers! They will whine that you can't play games on Linux. It's very funny because for a long time there has been a program called lux-wine that allows you to open 95% of .exe programs and even more so you can choose any version of Windows without downloading anything, there is like proton and so on.

I am ready to talk to anyone about this topic, but not for the purpose of humiliation or insult.

What's Linux? Why are you making a strawman to found yoer disagreement, there is no inherent value to what you believe to be obvious.

"Linux the kernel" is a wonder of the software world. One free and open source kernel codebase to rule them all, a culture, a license that enshrines that culture. The kernel is great as it is.

"Linux the kernel packaged with software used on the desktop" is flaming garbage. That's not to say it's worse, modern windows is like using the lava from Chernobyl to keep warm on a brisk evening. MacOS is relatively acceptable but Apple isn't. Open source BSD based OSes are cumbersome on the edges of general computing. Android is all but Google OS at this point. Ultimately no practical, actually useful alternatives to linux on the desktop actually exist. This does NOT mean we have to convince ourselves it is actually good.

"Linux the kernel and a server OS package" is great, can't go wrong with this. Love it, genuinely.

"Linux for embedded devices" is a fucking travesty. Still happens.

Various opinion roundup:

  • nix is the only case of anyone ever truly imagining what they could do with a Linux system
  • "open source" does not provide value, the implications do, when true
  • Linux is as secure as your dedication to never using software from outside the package manager is. Oh you installed discord? steam? compiled something and fetched dependencies? Those aren't the package manager, oops! (Discord gladly downloads its own updates whether you think you've stopped that or not)
  • Fewer viruses you've heard of
  • Regular security updates is a low effort troll given the corporate OSes are paid to do so

To me, the saddest thing about LLM powered genAI is that the technology is actually really cool but thanks to capitalism and greed, it's been built out in the worst possible way.
Trained on stolen, unattributed information of all kinds.
Tweaked and tuned by hand by an army of clandestine underpaid overseas labor.
Stealing power and water from mostly working class folks.
Slapped on anything and everything whether we want it or not tasked with replacing services that actually work with something that fundamentally cannot match their performance.

Like, the ability to understand natural language regardless of how it's written is super cool. The ability to take mountains of input and turn it into a model that can create output that looks like the correct answer in a way a person would create it is pretty neat.
It's not necessarily accurate but in the right situation, and with qualified people, that can be accounted for.
It never should have been unleashed on the public as a generic chatbot.
That's the worst, most wasteful use for it.
They don't understand that it isn't thinking. They don't understand how bad it is for the environment.
It needed a few more years, maybe a decade, in labs and with specialists.
Not this.
This is garbage. This is apocalyptic.

Entire businesses are being built on misunderstandings, on lies. Real people have been fired to be replaced by a GIGO regurgitation engine.
Certain end-users are treating chat confabulations like oracles from a god and failing to exercise the most basic fact checking.
It's turning us into liars and addicts.
Lives are being ruined.

It didn't have to be this way.

Agree that it's a toy.
After I posted that and went to bed last might, I was thinking about some if the image, audio, and video synthesis it churns out. Being able to parse a rambling set of instructions about what the user wants and then munging its massive data set into something that matches the prompt is very impressive, six-fingered nonwithstanding.
They will never "solve" confabulation because that's just how it works. It's all just stringing numbers / tokens together in a way that probabilistically meets the prompt.
It could have been developed and released in a much more socially responsible manner.
It's neat. From an academic standpoint, they've been discovering unexpected and impressive emergent functionality. That's the cool part. We didn't need to exploit, bully, and steal to learn it; but that's sure as hell how we did it.

It's from Rockwell International in the 1960s I believe and was a satirical spoof on all the engineering videos films they've been having to do the whole script is bullshit with nonsensical names and barely plausible descriptions.

Correct.

I think that the coolest thing about #AI is that it forces us to REALLY try to understand what HUMAN thinking is. We have made some breakthroughs in our model of consciousness with the Penrose -Susskind models. We actually have papers now that support empirically that Consciousness is a quantum phenomena.

So our current models will likely never be truly conscious, until we port them to quantum computers. But then again, if the LLMs fake it well enough...will it matter?

Hope the models apply to other mammals and living things because I'm sick of anyone saying that other mammals are somehow "less" than us. Hell, they're not even less evolved than us, they're just evolved perfectly for their environment.

Religion tried to teach me that only Man was conscious and only Man had a "soul" (I'm using a secular definition to define an organism's "essence of self".)

Because anyone that has animals, owns animals, cares for animals, and works with animals, knows damn well they are just as conscious and self-aware as you and I are.

For a very long time, the Turing test was the gold standard for benchmarking AI.
We thought, that once machines pass the Turing test, we will have true AI.
Of course, the current frontier models blow past Turing benchmark easily.

So the ARC (Abstract reasoning Corpus) was developed to really task AI.
It's now is in its third iteration (ARC3?) because once again the frontier #LLM models blew past V1 and V2

We have just developed what we ominously call "Humanities Last Exam" which fails AIs because it relies on super specific knowledge of subject that are very specialised.

However, given that AI exhibit a capability called "zero-shot". That's giving output for data they have not been trained on, I don't give much life expectancy to HLE.
Will we have reached #AGI in 18 months when HLE is broken by the machines?
And will it matter anymore?

Ultimately I think it matters if the AI is able to be creative and generate new and original art.

I think creativity is a fundamental requirement of the "quantum" thing that forms consciousness.

Elephants and dogs have been shows to be creative when given tools and instruments they can use, and the correct opportunity.

I'm reminded of a scene in the game "Detroit Become Human" where one of the protagonist androids showing emergent behavior is asked to paint something for the character he is caring for and at first the android simply produces a reproduction from its visual sensors.

I don't know/ remember if the character was ever able to show true creativity but it came damn close in the game. (It was Marcus for anyone wondering).
